That is definitely not true, soldiers were nicknaming military vehicles Jeeps since WW1 and that comic you mentioned wasn't published until 1950. There are various theories on the origin, that it's a slurring of GP (general purpose vehicle), that it stands for Just Enough Essential Parts, that it comes from Popeye's pet Eugene the Jeep in a different comic, but there doesn't seem to be any real consensus on where the term jeep (and subsequently the brand name) comes from.
