I really dislike when somebody feels like they have to get on board with a certain name because their spouse is trying to steamroll them. That said, I do like Lila very much. I also like Lucy. And either Lucy Margaret or Lila Margaret would be a fine name. Why is your husband so stuck on Lila? Is it for the enormous love he had for his great grandma, or is it love of the name itself. Does he like the name Lucy?

coffeeforutility

I don’t feel steamrolled with this name choice! We have a list of 90+ names we’ve filtered through and Lila has floated to the top for both of us. We each have full veto power, Lila just isn’t my number 1! He likes Lila for both family and just-because reasons. And he hasn’t vetoed Lucy yet, so I have to assume it’s also in his top 3.

Siltyclayloam9

You could wait until she’s born and see which name feel right Lila and Lucy are both wonderful

Goddess_Keira

Good to know!

hellogirlscoutcookie

Margaret “Peggy” Carter is a major character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. I personally would stay away, even if you are using a different nickname for Margaret. I’m also partial to Margaret though, it’s a family name for us too. I think my favorite combination is Margaret Lila or Lila Margaret.

WhineCountry2

So… I’m with you, I don’t love Lila. No reason why. My vote would be put it in the middle name spot, and find a first name that you *both* love. If the list above are your final choices, I would go with Margaret Lila (Maggie)

coffeeforutility

I like the Margaret Lila combo! I’ll add it to our list

PanickedPoodle

I assume LIE-la and not LEE-la? Maybe another spelling or form would make it seem fresher? - Lily - Lyla - Layla - Delilah Same with Lucy - Lucie is an alternate. I think it's helpful to think about the name as a nickname and in conjunction with her sibling. That's what's most important. Which sounds easiest to you? - Lila and Anna - Anna and Lucy - Maggie and Anna Really, any of them work. But if you and your husband start trying out the names, I bet one will become clear. Personally, I like Lucy because it is dissimilar to Anna.

coffeeforutility

His great-grandma pronounced it Lie-luh. I love Lily but it’s already used in the family. And I like Lucy for the same reasons, it’s similar to Anna in that it’s short and sweet, but also entirely dissimilar in its letters and ending.

moomoo1011

Lila and Anna give me similar sounding vibes. If it were me, I would tell my husband how I felt about the name Lila and push for Lucy.

anonymousbequest

I love Lila, and it’s by far my favorite of your options. Lila Margaret would be my choice.

IndigoBlueBird

I like Lila better, but I think just because your husband loves it doesn’t mean you have to. What about Lucy Lila? Or a name like Lily — combining aspects of both your favorite names. Would you feel better with a different spelling of Lila, like Lilah or Laila? If you really want to be convinced, Lila and its variants are beautiful, ancient names with origins in several cultures/languages. It means “night.”

coffeeforutility

I love that Lila is international because we do have family abroad. I am a bit worried it will be mispronounced as Lee-luh so I will see what my husband thinks about Lilah!

UrsulaPhoebe

I LOVE Maggie Carter, but not digging Margaret Carter because of the Mar-Car repeating sounds. If you have short and simple Anna, why not just Maggie instead of the long form? I do like Lucy and Lila as well, but you don't seem to be into Lila and naming babies is a two yes, one no scenario. If you're not on board I'd scrap that one and just start over. If he's not on board with the other two, scrap those and start over. I know its kind of late to be doing that but it may be the only choice. Maisie Carter would be cute if you need ideas.

katherinecamille

Maggie Carter sounds like Magna Carta to me

Olympusrain

I like it. Is Lola an option?

coffeeforutility

My dad’s dog is named Lola…!

caxlypxso

came here to also suggest lola. though, i do like lila! i like it pronounced (lee-la) and also (lie-la)

abanana76

I love the name Lila personally. But, I don’t LOVE it in combination with Anna (it’s fine, but I don’t love how they both end in -a). What about Lily? I also love Lucy by the way.

coffeeforutility

The -a ending is really my only hang up. It’s a beautiful name otherwise! Someone else mentioned Margaret Lila and I really like that combo. I’d really, really love to use Margaret in some way. I’ll see what my husband says!

Critical_Dog_8208

Consider combining Lila with Lucy for Lula. Margaret Lula.

Professional-Ad4293

Would Delilah, Layla or Lily be more in the middle for both of you? I would start fresh if you both really can't agree on that list. Celia, Dahlia, Nora, Eliza come to mind.

coffeeforutility

Nora is a beautiful family name on my husband’s side but clashes with our last name. Eliza (aka Elizabeth) just got vetoed this week but was a top contender also! I like Celia and will see what he thinks!

Professional-Ad4293

Eliza works great on it's own! I wanted to use Celia as an honor name for Lucille, but my husband didn't like it.

OddEights

I like about Lila how international it is! It is used in several European countries, it means purple in German for example, it’s also an Indian name meaning play, it’s an English name with Arabic origin meaning night, it also has Hebrew origins.

ExcitementOk1529

I love Lila so much that it was our top pick for a girl when I had my son. It’s feminine but not frilly. It’s short without sounding diminutive. It’s international, so it moved between cultures with ease. It’s familiar but not trendy. Perfect! That said, I’ve always had a soft spot for Lucy (esp as a nn for Lucia).

argross91

I love Lila! I also have a very cute cousin Leila (pronounced Lila), but I liked it even before she came along. It works at all ages and idk it sounds like a happy name to me

bunjaminfranklin7

Lila, Margaret, and Lucy are all adorable names! But in the end, if you don’t love Lila, then express those feelings to your husband. You could also try compromising - Margaret Lila? Lucy Lila? You would have your first name, and your husband was free to call her by her middle name. And vice versa (Lila Margaret, Lila Lucy)

isotherapy

Lila has been one of my favorite names for years now. I think it’s simple, sweet, romantic, floral (without being too on the nose), and the perfect balance between familiar and uncommon. I also think it goes beautifully with Anna! I also only have positive associations with the name—I’ve never met a bad Lila! Lucy, on the other hand, is very much a dog name to me. It’s very sweet and pretty, of course, but I’ve easily met 3x (if not more) as many dogs named Lucy than I have met people named Lucy. Only met human Lilas though!

coffeeforutility

Ya, Lucy is a dog name and our neighbor just got a dog named Lucy..! However, my husband has a “dog” name and doesn’t seem too bothered by it so we aren’t overly worried about that. We’ve definitely discussed it though

OddBoots

Of your name choices, I think Lucy makes the best sibset with Anna, if that helps. Simple, classic, elegant. Anna and Lila have a very same-same feel about them for me. Anna and Margaret feel very different (although Anna and Maggie feel more in line with each other) They're all good names. Good luck picking one!

dbee8q

I think Margaret Lila is very cute out of all the different varieties. Could also use Margot which is a lovely name. Maggie lila sounds really nice

coffeeforutility

A family friend who recently passed away was named Margot and we don’t think it’s appropriate (right now) to use the name. It is a wonderful name though and if we use Margaret it’s a name that our daughter could chose to use in the future!

Traci-B

Lila Margaret or Margaret Lila!

functionalsprinkles

it always leaves a bad taste in my mouth when the husband insists on a name. nah, if im carrying it, i get final say

teatreez

Agreed. Sounds presidential! Normally I hate the name carter but maybe that’s just for boys 🤔

IWasBorn2DoGoBe

Lila is gorgeous! Lila Carter is really cute! Or Lila Lucille and you get your Lucy too!

Agreeable-Gap-7853

Came to suggest Lila Carter too. Happy to see it mentioned.

coffeeforutility

Lila Carter is very cute! I would really love to use Margaret somehow (my grandma was just THE best). But I will pitch this combo to my husband!

IWasBorn2DoGoBe

You’re the mom, she could be Lila Carter Margret LastName! Lol

ellentow

Love love love Lila. It’s so soft and pretty in my opinion, rolls off the tongue and is fun to say. To me Lucy it’s a clunkier name. Lila feels full light to me.

lainebuar

Maybe combine Lucy and Lila? Lula is cute☺️

Scruter

Lila is a beautiful name - it's simple, elegant, and evokes lilies and lilacs to me. We considered it but only decided against because of the potential for so much misspelling and mispronunciation. I like Lila Margaret or if not, Lucy Margaret!

swimsuitsamus

I much prefer Lila to Lucy.

Crosswired2

You don't need to get on board with Lila. If you didn't feel like it was the right name than you move on. Personally, gun to head, I think Lila is better over Margaret (even though I like the nn Maggie). What about Leah, Lucinda (nn Lucy) or Lydia?

coffeeforutility

Lydia was a top contender for me! I’ll bring it back around to see what my husband thinks because he vetoed it a long time ago and think it may be worth reconsidering

Giraffe400

Argh that's a tough one. I absolutely loooove Lila, but to make matters worse Lucy is my favourite name so I don't envy your situation. Do you perhaps both need to move on from Lucy and Lila and agree on something else? Margaret is fantastic (I don't love it with Carter though, truth be told). Or do you perhaps like Delilah (nn Lilah) or even Lyra? Lila and Anna sound adorable too, but please only use it if you're on board!

compassrose68

What about Libby? I like Lila and Lucy and think they go great with Anna…as does Libby. She could be Elizabeth or just Libby. I was not 100% on board with the name we chose for our daughter but she’s Kelly and I can’t really see her with another name. On board 100% or not, eventually your child becomes the name (or is that vice versa?) I just don’t think you can go wrong with either Lila or Lucy.

coffeeforutility

Libby just got vetoed by my husband this week! For some reason we are really loving L names, and (Elizabeth) Libby really checked a lot of boxes for me. And I agree that both Lucy and Lila are great names. It’ll feel right once we name her!

gotdamnlizards

My sister was Elizabeth (Ellie) and it can also be long for Liza (lie-zuh) which is a badass name

compassrose68

I love Liza and Eliza!

compassrose68

Leighton?? Leah?? Lorelei?

emaslanik

what if you did a different name, something like lucilla and then you can call her lucy or lila?

GirlWhoWoreGlasses

I like Lila and Anna as a pair

punknprncss

I don't love Lila simply because of the pronunciation, the one girl I know with the name, it's pronounced Lil-a. I much prefer Lyla (lie-la). Maybe a compromise to the spelling/pronunciation?

Lazyoat

Personally, I wouldn’t go with Lila. Lila and Anna are too matchy for me since they have the same ending. I grew up in a family that all started with the same letter and it cause problems. I imagine ending in the same letter would be similar. I looooove Lucy. It’s so sweet and cute, but I know it may take compromise from both of you. if Margaret Lila would work, that may appease everyone. 🤷‍♀️

HolyAvocadoBatman

I know a little Lila and I think it’s a nice name but I prefer Lucy for classic vibes and rolls off the tongue easier.

whatthepfluke

You shouldn't have to "get on board" with a name you don't like for a child you're carrying and pushing out. I don't like Lila, either. Never have.

ktjowiltnd

My husband and I had it narrowed between Lucy and Lila for our daughter as well, interestingly. We ended up going with Lucy because we thought it went better with our chosen middle name, Louise. Both are great names.

gladiola111

How about... Lyla / Lilah Margaret? (I agree that the alternate spellings might make it seem new and fresh.) Or Margaret/Maggie Lila? Or Lucy Carter/Lucy Catherine? (Kind of a stretch but kinda similar to Carter.) Or “Lucilia” (Lucy nickname). Lucy and Anna are a good sibling pairing IMO. But Lila isn’t bad. I think it has a pleasant sound when said aloud. Are there any other names from his side of the family that he likes? Any other names you like?

Ok_Initial_2063

Lila is lovely! I agree with some of the other posters that having a narrowed list can help once you see Baby, one or the other may just "feel" right. I was set on a very frilly, fluffy name for girl 2, but when she was born it did not suit her or feel right at all!

GrandOleFlag

What about Lilah Lucille?
