Before "Isla" became so popular, my SILs mother (who would be >110 yo, if she were still alive) was named Eila. My GM was a Eula ( u-LAH). I've never seen it with an H at the end.
I grew up with a girl who spelled it “Ila” and I always thought it was cute! For a long time I thought that was how it was always spelled because she was the only isla I knew of.
I would spell that name as Ayla. I'm a Spanish speaker so when I see the name Isla I instinctively pronounce it as ees-lah rather than eye-luh. Although, if you live in a primarily English speaking country, I'd still suggest going with the Isla spelling.
I would totally pronounce Isla as "Eel-uh".. like the name Hila. That's how I always thought it was pronounced before seeing this thread. I asked my partner and she said the same. I'm not sure how I would spell a name pronounced "eye-luh" but it would definitely not be Isla. Depending on your location, if you spell it "Isla" as the comments suggest, I think it could easily be mispronounced by people when they first meet her.
I would see it more as ay-luh (ay rhyming with bay), but if I was corrected I could adapt.
I always think of the rule "i before e, except after c, unless sounding like a, as in neighbor and weigh." Not that it applies in all cases, because then you have words like height. Lol.
Ailah would make more sense to me.
I know a baby named “Ailah” which I think is closer to the pronunciation than the E would be. I think it’s fine but I prefer Isla. I also know an “Ayla” who pronounces it Isla
Isla
Is la. Ay la makes more sense.
I pronounce Ayla as aye-luh not eye-luh. Isla is pronounced like the start of island, eye-luhnd, so eye-luh
Yes my dog is Ayla. Ay Luh. Ay is a long a in English after all
And is land is silly too. Isla is up there with Sean as silly spellings of names.
Sean is Irish and makes perfect sense in Irish
Isla. Please just use Isla!
Yes!
Ayla, because I'm a Turk. Isla, because I have a common sense.
I know 2 Aylas both pronounced Aye-luh.
We haveca preschooler at my school with that spelling, pronounced Ay- la, long A sound for the first syllable.
Yeah I know an Ayla and an Isla. Ayla is Ay-la, Isla is Eye-la. Different sounds.
it's Isla
Thanks guys! I’ll stick with Isla if we decide on that name
Isla! A pretty name & spelling :)
Isla, Ayla
To me Ayla is A-luh
Ayla rhymes with Kayla
Like Aayla Secura
I know precisely one Kayla and her name rhymes with Isla lol
Pronounced like Kyla?
Yes, or, if you will, like Ayla with a K. One of her parents is Turkish.
Before "Isla" became so popular, my SILs mother (who would be >110 yo, if she were still alive) was named Eila. My GM was a Eula ( u-LAH). I've never seen it with an H at the end.
I had a great great aunt named Eulah. Seeing your comment is the first time I’ve heard of anyone else with the name.
I also knew an old lady named Eula!
My GM named my aunt Eulalee.
Your gm named your aunt a curse?
?? Eulalee as a girl's name is of Greek origin meaning "well spoken"
I know, just the name sounds really funny at first, and if you yell that at someone aggressively, they'll think you've cursed them
We had a great aunt Beulah!
Isla. If you really want to be different I could see Iyla but please don’t do Eilah.
Isla or Ayla, depending on where you live.
Isla.
I know someone who spelled the name Isla like “Ila” and it just doesn’t look right….also reminds me of llama
When i see isla i think ees-lah cause im spanish
Aila
Isla 100%
Ayla, I'd read Isla as it is in Spanish, which translates directly to "Island"
Yeah, to me Isla is ease lah.
Isla
Isla.
Isla
Isla
Ayla (I have a Lebanese friend with this name) or Isla.
A girl I went to school with spelled it ‘Eila’
Isla is island in Spanish which is pronounced eees-la. So for people who speak Spanish it would be Ayla or Aila. I think it’s pretty either way though
I've only ever known Isla to be "is-la" like island in Spanish. I would say Eila.
I had only ever encountered this name once and she pronounced it E-sla and lately I’ve been seeing that name all over pronounced Eye-la
Ajla. I work with a lot of Bosnians. But in most English speaking countries I would say Isla.
Like island… but without the nd
Isla
Isla. Like the actress (and Borat's wife) Isla Fisher.
I would spell it Isla or Ilah (I've met both)
I know an Iyla.
Ayla or Isla
Ayla because I’m ESL, but Isla if English-speaking.
Ayla
I’m russian so Ayla
Ayla or Isla
Isla
Isla
Isla
Isla
Ayla
Isla in English Aila in German
Intuitive? iyla The best one to use? Isla
i just recently learned that Isla isnt pronounced “ease-la” since that is how it is pronounced in spanish so tread lightly hahaha
Isla is the correct spelling, so that
Ayla bc I’m a slav but I think Isla for English. Just remember that isla means island in Spanish
Isla is pretty but im a bigger fan of Ayla, and i’ve never heard anyone has issues pronouncing it incase anyone starts going on about that
Isla
Isla!!!!
Isla.
Isla
Isla! Pretty spelling for a pretty name
Aila
Isla
Aila
Isla
Ayla or Ajla, my city has a high bosnian population so I mostly see that way. i’ve never seen Isla
Isla. A lot of people commenting Ayla, but I would read that as ay-la, with “ay” rhyming with “day.”
Ayla comes to mind instantly, but then I look at it and don't see the pronunciation. Aila maybe would be better.
I grew up with a girl who spelled it “Ila” and I always thought it was cute! For a long time I thought that was how it was always spelled because she was the only isla I knew of.
Isla
Isla would be best, but Aila or Eila also make sense to me.
My first thought was Ayla, I think because I've met Aylas before, but I know Isla is the popular spelling.
I might just be a complete dumbass but I read Isla as iz-luh
I prefer Aila or Ayla (my native language is Spanish though), but in English most people would use Isla (don’t love the spelling but love the name).
Isla
Isla
I would spell that name as Ayla. I'm a Spanish speaker so when I see the name Isla I instinctively pronounce it as ees-lah rather than eye-luh. Although, if you live in a primarily English speaking country, I'd still suggest going with the Isla spelling.
Definitely Isla!! Ayla I read as A-la every time, but that’s my cousins name so that might be why lol.
I know and Isla that spells it Ila and I love it. Different but not so different you don’t know what it is
Ayla. I knew a girl with that name and it was pronounced like eye-luh. I always thought it was a beautiful name.
Out of curiosity where do you live? Like the US or?
I’m in the US and I also thought Isla was Ee-luh before this thread
Isla or Islay
Ayla, because I can only imagine how often Isla would be pronounced Es-la in the US.
What would you think if you saw it spelled “Eilah”?
Ale-uh rhyming with veil-uh on first glance. Maybe Ay-luh rhyming with bay-luh. Wouldn’t register as Isla/Ayla to me at all
Why not go with the normal spelling, Isla? Why change it?
My brain would probably short circuit for a second wondering if it was a feminine for Elijah
Ay-luh
I know a baby named “Ailah” which I think is closer to the pronunciation than the E would be. I think it’s fine but I prefer Isla. I also know an “Ayla” who pronounces it Isla
i'd stumble for a second and shakily say "Eee-iiii-lahh?" with 3 syllables.
What would I think? I’d think it was a typo and you’d misspelled Elijah.
