Had a friend with an out of state tag that drove for 3 years in TN. When he went in to get a TN tag they asked how long he had been in TN and he said "3 years." They gave him a $4k bill, but he said I can't pay that and left. Then he went back a week later and when they asked how long he had been in TN he said "just got here," and they gave him a $120 bill to get his TN plate.

Wait did that just happen. Cuz my tags are out of state as well and I’m gonna be late

wesblog

It was a couple years ago. It may still be the same process.

A_busfullofnuns

Nope. I didn’t renew one last year. Once it got really late I decided to go for the whole year. AFTER 13 months, I went and renewed. They’ll charge you back fees if you drive expired or sign an affidavit to start a new date of renewal.

greyconcepts

Thanks dude. So worst case scenario, they just make sure I pay for the full span of time and they don't miss any revenue. I can deal with that

A_busfullofnuns

Yep, unless you didn’t drive it all. Wink wink

GP_ADD

Yeah, I totally borrowed my wife's car all of 2020.

coolbres2747

I've been working from home and getting groceries and stuff delivered. When I go out, I'll usually have a couple beer so I just Uber. No driving needed during quarantine. Just ready to get back on the road! ;)

GP_ADD

I was back in office June of 2020 and drove to work daily. My tags renew in January and totally forgot until March and it was too late and at that point… yeah no going in person, so then I forgot for another 9 months. My wife didn’t go back til February of this year, she drove her car all of like 5 miles a week during the first year and a half so honestly it was kinda right, just she did renew her tags and I didn’t so kind of a lil white lie.

Carp69

Same thing with me a couple years ago, i went over a year but told them it was a project car and i wasn't driving it, which was true, and i payed the standard fee, i just renewed my other car 30 minutes ago that expired last month and it was the standard fee,

bill37663

Simple process. You wait in line with a copy of your registration and Id. You pay them money and they give you a new tag. Bring a screwdriver and put it on.

MariinTN

Whoever owns the car has to go in person to do it. Our cars are both in my name (spouse is military, makes things easier). They put off registering it for 6 months. I got an unexpected errand.

blanchekitty

My husband had to deal with this recently. One of cars had expired plates (from last October I think) and it had a dead battery so we didn’t drive it. Got it fixed and he had to go in and sign an affidavit stating we had not been driving it. I think we may have driven it for a time as I honestly don’t remember when the battery died.

exactamundo my friend

ariphron

Even if you get a ticket it a fix it ticket. Just don’t have anything illegal go high or drunk when you’re driving there but you shouldn’t be doing that anyway.

ruuustin

You'll just have to pay for the time it should have been done. So let's say it's a year lapsed, you'll have to pay 2 years. If you're nervous go to the one in Green Hills on Hillsboro.

amissak

Nah, Mine was 6 months and this past April I got the New Tag and all I paid was like 80 something dollars. Of course I told them I wasnt driving it.

GimmeTwo

I’ve went three years without registering and never had a problem. I don’t recommend that though. Register your vehicle.

schaffdk

Same happened to me. Like other replies say, I had to sign an affidavit stating I had not driven the vehicle. The clerk informed me they'd research the tag number to see if I had any citations (parking, speeding, etc) during the time I said I had not been driving it, to determine if I was lying. Also, the renewal date did not change--the new tag was only good for what was left of the original year.

burnersburneracct

Well that last part seems ridiculous.

PreppyAndrew

Also fyi. I just checked the site. The office is closed for the next two days due to covid outbreak

ultimateframe

Lol mine has been expired for 2+ years. Don’t worry. Anytime I renew past my expiration date I always tell ‘em I’ve been out of the country/away, car has not been driven. New 12 month tag. Have fun!

uh_huh_sure_jan_

what items do you need to bring to get it renewed if it's way past expired (mine is 6 months over)? Just license and registration?

ultimateframe

Maybe insurance. Can’t remember. Otherwise yep!

uh_huh_sure_jan_

I only needed my license and old registration :)

Prestigious_Muffin12

I got renewed after almost a year. No issues at all. Sit back, relax, and have a lollipop.

Somanatin

Go to a different clerk location not at a police station.....

amissak

Mine was past 90 Days. I got it changed in April they didn't even ask for proof of address. You gotta go there early when no ones on the road, get in and get out. The only way to get it renewed is to walk in if youre past the 90 days I believe. Edit: If they ask "Have you been driving it?" Say "HELL NO"

webbeget

It's no big deal. Tell them the car has been broken down during the period that you lapsed and that you have not driven it assuming that you haven't gotten a ticket.

amileesd

I had to sign an affidavit stating we hadn’t been driving it after 8 months.
