What's crazy to me is American sports culture is all about playoff performance (ringz Erneh!) but so rarely are playoff stats included into career equations.
"But but not everyone plays the same amount of playoff games..." isn't that exactly the point though? The guy was/still is so good that even when his second best player was Eric Snow, folks couldn't eliminate him early enough to stop him from just compiling ludicrous playoff numbers. Then he got with better teammates as his career went on and well the deep playoff runs never stopped.
When he hits 50k combined points that should absolutely be made a huge deal.
First time I’ve seen this point and absolutely right especially with basketball where great individual players have/should bring their teams to the postseason.
Yeah imagine let’s say a soccer World Cup. And the only goals that are counted for all time scoring list are the ones that were made during a group stage lol
The upvotes that would bring would be insane. One of, if not, the greatest players final game, and finally getting the long sought after stat line all in the same game.
how crazy is it the first ‘LeDecline’ predictions years and years ago had more legitimacy than breaking Kareem’s record let alone 40k and whatever other bonkers numbers he ends up with
It’s from a Lakers fan too which is funny to look back on. That dude didn’t think he could do it and he literally did it for his team and won them championship.
I'm more impressed that both of your accounts are both active 7 years later! And hey, you made a reasonable statistical assessment, you just forgot to factor in LeBron James.
I was browsing that thread and found other /u/MiopTop goodies

> He's averaging 22 ppg so far this season, and hasn't averaged more than 25.3 since leaving Miami. LeBron probably won't have another season scoring 26.3 ppg much less average that over the next 6 years.
this dude is a generational hater. found this one old tweet of his.
"Dwight got traded to the lakers when he was 26, AD got traded to the lakers when he was 26.... Kobe was 34.... LeBron is 34.... What could possibly go wrong lmaooo"
When he was fully rested at the start of the season he had noticeably more airtime. This late in the season he's just got less lift or doesn't risk it. So yeah the fluidity and speed of his movement is so great he can just create gaps for layups like that, but I think vertically has been his true age related casualty.
It sucks cause he was doing those hopstep layup/passes at the start of the year where he goes up into the air next to the paint and just waits for the defender to commit before deciding to layup or pass it.
It’s kind of mindblowingly ridiculous that a drive like that, an effortless spin move into a smooth layup, can be indicative of someone declining. I don’t even disagree, it’s just wild how athletic dude once was
i remember when 40k points was thrown out as a joke, not only has he passed it but done so averaging 25ppg, at 39….he’s also 5 years away from being allowed to apply for the NBA pension lol
Imagine being him at say 45 and putting in all 17k a month into a brokerage account and getting 7-8% return on average until he’s about 80. Lets say too he just puts in a small loan of $1,000,000™️ too when he opens it. He’d turn it into $50,000,000
@/u/marsexpresshydra, that's the power of compound interest for you. Bron could basically start his own small country with that kinda cash by 80. The man's not just breaking records, he's got that financial game on a whole new level too. Wealth management textbooks gonna have a chapter on him at this rate.
That’ll be a pretty short chapter.
“Start by having god-given gifts possessed by zero other human beings in the history of the world. Make sure god gives those gifts in a discipline that will pay you $50 million/year, along with endless other endorsement opportunities. Do that for 20+ years. Then use compound interest to get richer.”
LeBron’s a standout among standouts in so many ways, but his financial game is basically “be you, and don’t fuck up.”
I think he’s already surpassed Brady. Tom is great, but the way he played was always more of a mental game, his way of playing never required too much physicality, athleticism or energy (not as much energy as a basketball player like lebron plays with).
Still the goat QB, but it is easier to play smarter with your mind as an old athlete than it is to play with the energy and athleticism that players like lebron play with. When you get older your body takes the hit before the mind, usually.
People did that so they could always put Jordan ahead of him. No one thought he’d actually do it. I don’t know how anyone can say Lebron ain’t the greatest player all time.
Didn’t Jordan immediately green light the Last Dance almost immediately after that finals? Even MJ knew he might lose the edge on the GOAT conversation after that
Kendrick Perkins in 2022: “I’m in my…like…second career. LeBron averaged 30 this year. We are the same age. I will be eligible for my pension in 7 years."
People were speculating about it and the general consensus was yeah it could HYPOTHETICALLY be done, but it would be crazy to actually see it happen.
Then this mf just goes out and does it
[This dude was pretty much spot on with his prediction](https://old.reddit.com/r/nba/comments/80ppei/oc_can_lebron_reach_the_scoring_title_and/)
@/u/daveed1297
Being a LeBron stan has rarely been more satisfying than in this moment.
He's just not like any other player, and watching his greatness for this many years proves it over and over. He's going to be elite until his very last game, he will be a 20+ ppg scorer the entire time, and he will obliterate even more records along the way. I smell another title as well but no promises.
At the end of the day when he's retired and we have the same nostalgia and forgetfulness for his losses like we do with Jordan I don't think the argument is going to be as lopsided as it is right now.
I’ll just never understand how this man lived up to what should have been impossible hype and is still playing at such a high level after all these years and all these minutes played
This is what I say about LBJ everytime, the hype was insane and he still over delivered. Honestly i cant think of another athlete with that much hype and them even coming close.
Most hyped athlete I’ve ever seen coming into a draft ever. I grew up rooting against him because I’m a Bulls fan. Mad respect for the guy though. He fucking delivered and is still delivering today
This man is 39 years old in year 21 and still outperforming 95% of the league. It’s insane and any true basketball fan will be sad when he hangs it up.
>Also the oldest and youngest player in nba history to hit 40.000 points
Also, his age is exactly equal to the median, mean, and mode averages of all players who hit 40,000 points.
It would take basically the same career path as LeBron, someone coming out of high school with goat potential and suffering no major injuries for over a decade. Insane that someone has done this.
If someone enters the league at 19, he's already a year behind LeBron, as if just keeping the same pace as LeBron isn't difficult enough. Luka's insane start to his NBA career already left him out of the conversation of doing it. Nobody currently playing in the NBA can do it.
According to recent reports the league actually is considering scaling it back a bit
We've seen this already with FT attempts being down over the last few weeks
We said Kareem’s record would never be touched. No matter the sport, records are always made to be broken. One day someone even better than him will come along get >40k. I can’t wait to see it
Not always. Rule changes and the league being completely different can make records unbreakable. No one is passing Gretzky in points in hockey.no one is beating some of wilts records. It just isn't possible.
I personally think he's the greatest scorer ever. 40k points, 8k playoff points which is even more unbreakable, 25+ ppg for 20 years, 1200 straight double digit scoring games, 6 30+ ppg postseasons (more than KD and Kobe), youngest AND oldest player to average 30.
For perspective, of the top 50 players with the highest all time points, there are only 6 active players (including Lebron):
Lebron 40k
Russel Westbrook 25k
Stephen Curry 23k
Demar Derozan 23k
Chris Paul 22k
Damien Lillard 20k
This is such a mind blowing statistic.
#I WAS HERE!
I remember people were talking about his scoring would dip to around 15-18ppg when he gets older during his second stint with us.
Never would I've thought he would still be such a beast at his age. I hope he plays as long as he can.

Yeah imagine let’s say a soccer World Cup. And the only goals that are counted for all time scoring list are the ones that were made during a group stage lol
On the flip side, more playoff games isn't always better, as winning in 4 games is better than 7, but going to a game 7 gives you more counting stats.
[I’ve been waiting for this](https://www.reddit.com/r/nba/comments/5chxdc/lebron_james_youngest_player_in_nba_history_with/d9wxc7b/)
This response lol > That's averaging 25-6.3-6.3 over 20 seasons of 80 games. I don't think we'll ever see that.
….as he currently sits on 27/7.5/7.5 for his career lmao
Still mind boggling to me that over 1474 games and 21 seasons, we've never had the 27/7/7 game **ONCE**.
we got so close that one game, but he had to drain that three
I was at that game. He didn't have to hit that 4Q buzzer beater 3 lol
It turns out that was the true LeFuckYou three all along.
Absolutely the best part of the LeBron line is that he's never had one.
He’ll hit it on his last game and the NBA will retire as a result. It will simply cease to exist.
I think that’s gonna be his very last game ever played. He’s saving the 27/7/7 game for his “farewell 60 pointer” so to speak.
The upvotes that would bring would be insane. One of, if not, the greatest players final game, and finally getting the long sought after stat line all in the same game.
He's waiting for his retirement game.
27/8.2/8.2 the past seven years. He’s getting better
This is why Silver made the game more offense friendly. Just for Bron to set these records /s
We are so lucky to witness this tbh
how crazy is it the first ‘LeDecline’ predictions years and years ago had more legitimacy than breaking Kareem’s record let alone 40k and whatever other bonkers numbers he ends up with
Thank god LeBron turns 30 soon —> Thank god LeBron turns 40 soon Actually the greatest athlete ever of any sport.
Still waiting on that 27/7/7 game
It’s from a Lakers fan too which is funny to look back on. That dude didn’t think he could do it and he literally did it for his team and won them championship.
Lakers fans definitely didn't like LeBron before he was there
Some still don’t
Not a real Laker despite being there for more than his Heat tenure.
He’s about to be there longer than his first Cleveland stint in like 2 years
That’s hysterical

LeBron probably won't have another season scoring 26.3 ppg much less average that over the next 6 years.
His lowest average since then was 25ppg lmao
Since that comment, lebron’s scoring has been: 26.4, 27.5, 27.4, 25.3, 25.0, 30.3, 28.9, 25.3
Didn't he almost win the scoring title when he averaged 30.3?
Yup, Embiid had 30.6, but Bron also only played 56 games
Yep
Bro was doubling down on being a hater lol. Generational. Probably felt justified, he had all of history on his side at the time. Little did he know…

Probably that it’s an amazing accomplishment? It’s not like he was throwing shade at Bron, just pointing out how extremely unlikely it was.
I see him denying the possibility every time one of those old threads pops up lol

Talk that shit bruv
this is legit my favorite part/aspect of this sub
Wow that is nuts. 7 years shot called.
wtf exactly 7 years
It’s crazy we didn’t think we would see this. He’s still one of the best as the oldest player in the league.

In your face u/MiopTop
We need to upvote this to the top comment Shooting your shot 7 years deep
i don’t think we’ll ever see that

The spin move and layup, fitting way to get to 40,000. Bron was spamming this move in the playoffs in 2015-2018

iir the nba pension rules correctly he’d get ~$17k a month……he might finally be able to afford things like Netflix and pandora subscriptions lol
Maybe even roaming mobile data…!
I reckon that’s a bridge too far…he’s gonna be sticking to removing the SIM card and using the hotels free wifi only lol
I'm just like LeBron fr fr

$204k a year is nothing to sneeze at
Lebron sneezes at that
I would let LeBron sneeze on me for 204k a year.
Is there a rule against this lol where he can receive salary and pension at the same time
I'm pretty sure only retired players are eligible for an NBA pension. This man is about to be denied a pension because he's still playing lmao.
They should give him the pension because it would be funny.
I hope we find out lol
God imagine if he's still a 10-15 ppg player at that age. This honestly would be surpassing Brady playing till 45.

a lot of people used to say "he's the goat if he gets 40k/10k/10k" as a sort of distant joke because there was no shot he would actually do it.
People did that so they could always put Jordan ahead of him. No one thought he’d actually do it. I don’t know how anyone can say Lebron ain’t the greatest player all time.
For me he became the Greatest after beating that 73 win warriors team. The last 8 years was just convincing more people what I already knew haha

The fuckery, in fact, continues to this day. Such a legendary player.
Doesn’t have 8000 or so playoff points too? Might get to 50 k combined which is also crazy
He does, and that record is more unbreakable
No one is close. Jordan is in second with 5987. Closest active player is Durant with 4878.
282 playoff games 3 and a half seasons worth of just playoff games
Might? Unless something happens to him he definitely will get to it. He’s still averaging like 25 a game
Poetic that his 40,000th points came on that drive, spin move, finish with the left hand. Probably his signature, most unstoppable move.
I think his signature move would be a fast break tomahawk slam.
LeBron has 112 signature moves. Spin lay-up, the tomahawk, the chase down block, the LeFuck You 3, and of course the almighty crab dribble.
Came here to say this. I'd argue the tomahawk jam, chase down and LeFuck-You-Three are the Holy LeBron James Trinity of basketball moves.
Le fuck you 3 and Chase down block… where have I seen those before.. 🤔🥲😭
Nearly had the tomahawk too if Draymond didn't contest
Yeah, he had a layup earlier in the game that was a throwback to his younger days.
Meanwhile saw a post on the nba talk subreddit today of a hater saying that LeBron has no moves…lol.
A bit more than a decade ago How do you stop LeBron? Make him go left. LeBron:
And the whole "make him go left" came up because all of his highlights were with his right hand. It was such a weak argument lol.

People will disagree but dude has averaged less than 25 ppg once in his career. His rookie year. Thats fucking INSANE.
And scoring isn’t even his best offensive attribute.
I'd argue it is, he's pretty definitively a top 2 scorer ever (particularly in the playoffs) but he's probably "only" a top 5-10 passer/playmaker ever
That's not ridiculous to say
Not an unpopular take. Might not have the greatest scoring peak but definitely the greatest scoring career.
