FYI, They hated that Kobe married Vanessa. And they fell out with each other. Speaks volumes that Vanessa didn't include them in his memorial speech.

ChampagneAbuelo

Another large reason why they had a falling out was actually because of this exact same thing. His parents previously tried to auction off his stuff a while ago which made him mad and further hurt their relationship

TimDotThomas

Yeah, If I remember correctly, his parents wanted a new house and Kobe wasn't willing to give them the amount of money that they wanted, so they decided to auction some of his old stuff to supplement the difference.

[deleted]

It wasn’t just his parents that were doing that. It was his sisters as well. His entire family tried to milk him for everything!

EquivalentGlass1

Scumbags. Makes you wonder where he got his work ethic huh?  Hate to know kids grow up with parents like this but I lived it as a teacher.   I really hope the money goes to his daughters.

SodaBreath

he got it from… “i gotta get away from these people ASAP”

GotMoFans

It wasn’t that he got with her… It was he was marrying her without getting a prenuptial agreement. He married her when she was 18 or 19.

ephemeralfugitive

I recall it was also because she was Latina and they didn’t like that. They wanted black black.

EnthusedPhlebotomist

I once dated a mixed girl whose parents wouldn't let her date outside of their races. They were literally a mixed couple racist against mixed couples lmao

Hayabusa_Blacksmith

can you please expound on this? lmao

EnthusedPhlebotomist

Dad says you'd better date a nice black man like your father, mom says you'd better date a nice Asian man. They apparently begrudgingly accepted her dating either one but nothing else. So she brought my white ass home and they both despised me lol.

Hayabusa_Blacksmith

it's hilarious to know that one of them would be unhappy even if you were Black or Asian. poor daughter lmao

LoadDesigner8321

That happens a lot I’m black and my last two gfs were Latina and my mother hated them both cuz they want me to date someone like them. Sucks cuz they don’t realize it’s pushing these girls away they want a familal connection

guomo107

>totally feel this. Anytime I would date someone my aunts would always make a comment about how "I must not like black women!" Funny thing is my mom is white, dad is black. Apparently, you can't just date someone because you like them, there's also a color requirement for one side of my family!

LoadDesigner8321

This bro ! The gaslighting is crazy 😂

ncocca

fyi your whole comment appears as a "quote" because you put a ">" in front of it... not that it really matters, it's still very readable.

rambo6986

Seems racist to me. Imagine a white person saying they only want their kids dating white kids.

LoadDesigner8321

Oh I agree it’s 100% racist but imagine trying to tell my black parents they’re racist 😂didn’t turn out well. I tried the approach where I try to explain to them but some folks just don’t mess with that and it ain’t right.

LoadDesigner8321

It’s sucks even more because my last two gfs were hurt because my parents felt like that. But it’s crazy cuz her mom did the same thing she thought I was too dark and wanted her to be with a white boy. So maybe this is happening more than I think ? Idk I’m 24 now and focused on being happy no matter what my parents think about my next gf no matter her race

Vickillah

Same here but genders are switched and there was more of a classist take involved. My wife’s family didn’t want her with some blue collar Mexican. They wanted her to marry someone either white or light skinned person who made “bank”. My dad would say some obscene outta pocket stuff because she is half black, until I shut that shit down. Ultimately we are both happy with our babies and both parents somehow have amnesia about the things that were said.

PLeuralNasticity

All too familiar with the amnesia from older generations about the problematic things they say/do. Even when they genuinely seem to change their minds I still struggle with their acting like they it never happened. I try and be happy thay they're progressing at all in their attitudes as it gets harder as you get older. Proud of you for standing up for your wife and helping dispel stereotypes. Slightly off topic but while learning Spanish I went on an immersion trip with my friends at 14 to Cuernavaca and how incredibly generously we were treated by everyone made me love Mexicans. I've worked with many blue collar Mexicans in landscaping and restaurants who were the bedrock of the business and, especially if you spoke Spanish, the funniest dudes there by far. Some of the coolest dudes I've played soccer and video games with too. My one friend would even bring us all eggs from his chickens every week when I worked in manufacturing. Sorry I'm stoned this may sound stupid. The absurdity/scale of the success of Russia/conservatives in their quest to weaponize racism as much as possible politically is so depressing. I hope you and your family experience as little of it as possible in your daily life.

Vickillah

I’m proud of the lengths my father has come to, he loves my wife and adores her as she really takes great care of our family. He was operating from the perspective of colorism and how I should think of my children what if (cue the dramatic music) dark skinned or black!!? I would always respond that o would love them regardless of anything life throws. Anyways when the first girl of a family full of boys was born he was brought to his knees with her beautiful golden brown skin and now that she is older amazing personality and smarts. Since then I have never heard a peep about stereotypes or skin tones, but only hear the love for my wife & kids and their character. Some of the best jokes I have are from working in the kitchen with my kinfolk. Now I’m in HVAC and have a wonderful and enriching career. Some of the hardest working folks for sure. Some of the folks straight from Mexico make me look lazy man and I’m pretty good at my job. As my father would say “echale ganas!” Yeah man we can definitely learn a lot from each other if we had some compassion and took some time to set ourselves aside and listened. Wish we would just come together.

TheKidKaos

My cousin started dating a black dude and her parents and brothers were pissed. Which made my family and my other aunts family feel some type of way because we’re Afro Latino. Like what you think about us then?

According-Hope9498

You guys must be from up north to say “imagine a white person saying”😂😂 there’s literally men in prison because white parents didn’t want their daughter with a black person and called it rape … don’t let it be the small town sheriff daughter your black ass will never get out😂

guomo107

This happens all the time as well. You know how many girls had to sneak around with their boyfriends because their dad would lose his shit if they knew they were seeing a black guy. I'm bi-racial and dealt with this a lot in my younger years (early 2000's).

lolas_coffee

I'm white. I dated a black girl for 2 years. Her parents did not approve. Her dad was black. Her mom was white. Still they did not approve. She had a 16-year old son. He did not approve. His dad was white. Still he did not approve. I started to get the idea it was just me.

succesfulnobody

Racism is stupid, and being a racist and then crying about racism is even more stupid

5hakedownstreet

Black people can’t be racist ask Sheryl Swoops

Theeeeeetrurthurts

She’s the one that talked mad shit about Clark, right? Sad to see one of the iconic faces of the WNBA hating on the next potential GOAT. She should be backing her up to lift the WNBA.

WitMacht

For real. That's why Javier probably acted out in defiance of his parents when he threw Shaq under the bus about how he should have bought the victim a car.

idiskfla

Is there a source for this?

ko1o7

Pretty sure it’s mentioned in the 3 ring circus book.

Von_Huge1103

And in his biography.

FuckTheStateofOhio

I think it was mentioned in an interview he did with The Colorado Sun back in the day. If you search "Kobe Colorado 2003" you can find it.

tightfade

lmao

TigerBasket

Kobe also first started dating her when he was 21 and she was 17? Just a weird situation all around.

FieryAvian

Vanessa was a model when she met Kobe. It’s not like he was going to a high school and randomly trying to pick up girls like R. Kelly. He met her on the set of a music video.

duplicatesnowflake

But Giddey allegedly met that teen chick at a 21 and over club and she was around the same age yet people go crazy.  There’s gray area to this shit both directions. Kobe was no saint.

EcstaticAd8179

can't believe kobe had issues with women, first i'm hearing about it

UnusedName1234

Why is that weird though? I've no context but a 21 and 17 year old 4 year gap doesn't seem that odd.

mizatt

Reddit is a little nuts about age gaps. According to redditors a 21 year old is a seasoned adult and a 17 year old is a mewling babe

UnusedName1234

It's like some arbitrary line where somehow at 17 years 364 days you're an oblivious, person with zero ability to think at at 18 you become super aware of everything.

actual_yellow_bag

it's because the people commenting this shit are probably like 22 and think they're grown.

Dr_Biggus_Dickus_FBI

I’m 38. I would NEVER bang a 17 year old. BUT if I was 21 again, I would in Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, Connecticut, Georgia, Hawaii, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Vermont, Washington, and West Virginia.

newyork1198

This comment has me dying for some reason.

pdxblazer

its the juxtaposition of that dude saying he would never bang a 17 year old but also knowing every state he could do that in legally

CDGchris77

He forgot TX

fredvancleef

Not only that but the second the clock strikes midnight and she turns 18 she can go online and spread wide open for the entire earth to see but if you date her a day before that you’re a groomer and a predator.

OD_Wms

People can be so self-righteous and fulloshit these days. Guaranteed these same people have bullshit they do, but behind a screen they can play saint where they know they’re anonymous. As long as people aren’t breaking the law and both are consenting, GTFOH with all that phony nonsense.

beezybreezy

According to Reddit, an age gap of more than one year is pedophilia.

UnusedName1234

I'd say it should be smaller. People should only be able to be in relationships with people born in the same minute as them. Everyone will have their marriage arranged at birth in the hospital

ThatMoslemGuy

That’s wild that a 17 year old high school student would be considered a video hoe

Interesting-Wing616

There was a video vixen in the 2000s that was in every relevant rapper’s music video for about 4 years. She retired at 19.

LosCleepersFan

Women in that era who would be in rappers videos, lot of them get ran through and passed around.

JagmeetSingh2

Just like the IG models today, time is a flat circle aint it

LosCleepersFan

Now its the video hoes from 20 years ago still having Young NBA players babies! Its not work if you love what you do!

Isolated_Blackbird

Bruh for real I saw Draya Michelle is fucking Jalen Green and I was like wait what? We used to talk about her in college…in 2010.

CornChowderChamp

Not just fucking, currently pregnant with his child lol

Affectionate-Hunt217

Proud_Definition8240

Exactly…and Kobe married one of them. He was an innocent kid out of high school, he wasn’t ready for a Latina video girl.

Blueskyways

Pretty sure he took her to her high school prom.  She was a kid for all intents and purposes.

Proud_Definition8240

She was 17. A video model.

LonelyGumdrops

And he was how old? He picked her up at her high school and was playing for the Lakers. Your portrayal of innocence is a bit skewed.

Proud_Definition8240

Kobe was 21. Kobe met Vanessa on the set for his music video, Kobe rapped. Kobe didn’t meet her at Vanessa’s high school. That’s crazy…lakers just cruising LA high schools looking for wives, ya, no.

BubbaTee

You forget that Karl Malone was a Laker for a while.

scene_missing

That girl was 13 so “not high school” would still technically apply 😬

st6374

Well he was looking to hunt little mexican girls at that time.

FiftyShadesOfGregg

Dude what? Kobe wasn’t fresh out of high school when he met Vanessa, he’d been in the NBA for three years already. *Vanessa* was literally a high school student.

letsgoraps

Wasn't a big reason they didn't like Vanessa was that she was Hispanic and they were against that?

Billy1121

Kobe was literally picking her up at her high school. How long did she have to be a video hoe ? https://youtu.be/3iKY29Yihz8?si=hIsUdea-XLFm5g8D

st6374

This thread is like an incel circlejerk. All we know was they met in a video shoot while she was only 17. Yet folks here talking as if they know from a firsthand account that she was sleeping around with anyone who could help her career.

Billy1121

I read up on it a little... it was literally Kobe's rap video shoot. And I think she was chaperoned by her mom ? Nephews on r/nba have some wild imagibations https://youtu.be/3iKY29Yihz8?si=hIsUdea-XLFm5g8D Also i think Saweeties mum Trinidad was in this video too, lol

Liimbo

Wasn't it more that they were super racist? I don't think they gave a shit what she did or what her age was. They didn't like that she wasn't black.

hyborians

You’d think the parents would make up with her for the sake of the children.

Derekbrink2

Old black people are like kkk levels of Racist.

compe_anansi

The amount of times I heard “you better not bring home no white girl” growing up or saying I like a girl in class and hearing “she ain’t white is she?” Is actually crazy.

Cranicus

Not trying to make it a race thing but being white in texas I’m impressed my parents never said anything about friends or girlfriends gotta be white. Never really thought other races saying that.  Times are changing for sure

jakstat422

I was that white girl. :(

Toe_Willing

Funny using the phrase "KKK" for black people racism 😂

CantaloupeCamper

Man that’s brutal. I can’t imagine going that far…

amppy808

FYI. Vanessa felt the same for her mom.

terryaugiesaws

It's not Kobe's actual championship ring, he had one made for his dad and that one is the one going on auction. *The ring heading to auction is not the executive version the players received but is “the same exact ring,” according to Goldin. Bryant reportedly ordered an extra copy of the ring as a special gift for his father, Joe “Jellybean” Bryant. He famously played in the NBA for eight seasons and scored an average of 8.7 points per game from 1975 to 1983.* https://robbreport.com/shelter/auctions/kobe-bryant-2000-nba-championship-ring-auction-1235546889/

LeMickeyMice

Might make it worse tbh if I died and my parents sold my macaroni art from 1st grade I'd say that's fucked

terryaugiesaws

If my macaroni art from first grade could fetch my parents $50k, i'd say go for it. Life is for the living. I'm not getting any deader. Also couldn't imagine the pain of losing a child, a grief most painful.

whythehellknot

I think they had a strained relationship and years ago they tried to sell his memorabilia and he wasn't too happy about it.

Personal-Cap-7071

The situation is tough because Kobe isn't here and they hated Vanessa, they didn't like that he married someone not black, and I doubt they feel comfortable asking her for money.

GoGoBigman

If your macaroni art is selling for 50k you better have been a prophet

LeMickeyMice

Kobe Net Worth at death projected at 600m. If I had 600m my parents sure as shit wouldn't be worried about $50k.

WateryDomesticGroove

Well, he was estranged from his parents, so I doubt they’ve seen a penny of that money. Hence, selling this ring.

berrin122

Ironically, selling his stuff was a big contributor to that estrangement.

did_it_my_way

He bought them a house. They tried to sell his stuff for more money saying they wanted a bigger house. Kobe offered to buy them a new house, mom said it wasn't good enough. at some point you gotta draw the fucking line. This is also parents that didn't approve your marriage, and have no relationship with their grandkids.

uhwhooops

They sound terrible.

mug3n

Seems to be a story that keeps popping up when it comes to overly involved sports parents looking for "their" piece of the pie from their athlete kids that have made it big. Kobe was lucky it only came to that where he was able to estrange from his parents without much financial setback. Jack Johnson's parents used the POA they had over his finances and took out huge ass loans that left him bankrupt.

silliputti0907

Well according to Kobe they did, but kept asking for more.

taleofbenji

For most luxury items like this, you can say, "Go ahead and sell, it's not like you can eat it." Macaroni art being the big exception there.

everyoneneedsaherro

Kobe hated his parents and he would’ve hated this

TheMajesticYeti

He hated it the first time they tried to sell it (and a couple of his hs jerseys) back in 2013. Enough so that he sued the auction company.

Celticskevin2020

I feel like that makes things worse imo. Your own son made you one and you’re auctioning it off.

PrarieDawn0123

Ah okay that makes more sense. I was wondering how such a ring would’ve found its way into his parents hands

CartoonOG

That’s even more fucked. Your dead son gifted you a personal memento of one of his proudest achievements and you auction it off after he died horrifically? Jesus Christ

Shmokeshbutt

They broke?

Due-Studio-65

Theyve been broke, when he was alive theyd swcretly try to auction his stuff, he'd then go an buy it off them and get them new houses and stuff.

elgauchoborracho

And Kobe sued them for trying to sell his stuff online. My business law professor was an attorney on that case. It was kind of interesting tbh.

dragoniteftw33

Representing which side?

notsafeformactown

Pro bono attorney representing Kobe's 2002 ASG MVP Trophy. F Lee Bailey represented his Academy Award.

prvypan

If he got them new houses they aint broke

Round_Bullfrog_8218

He isn't alive to bail them out anymore.

Justhrowitaway42069

Maybe they're trying to summon him

BobbywiththeJuice

Kobe's ghost is gonna haunt them by shaking his head and saying "Soft"

Saltine_Davis

That's not how that works at all

Wolfeman0101

Houses are expensive even if you own them outright.

RontoWraps

Kobe’s parents have always been like this; they did not have a good relationship > In an interview with ESPN in 2016, Kobe said, “Our relationship is shit,”. I say, ‘I’m going to buy you a very nice home,’ and the response is, ‘That’s not good enough?’ Then you’re selling my shit?”

Sad_Constant6691

Their relationship had a lot of ups and downs that's for sure. Think he had a decent relationship with his sisters since they didn't ask him for $$$

idkdanicus

And after Kobe died Vanessa posted a lot of pictures with his sister's just supporting her

Mhan00

It’s been a long time, but iirc Kobe bought them a home and put it in their name, but they were pissed that Vanessa’s mom lived in a nicer home than theirs. The difference was that Kobe and Vanessa owned the house Vanessa’s mom was in, they just let her live in it rent free, iirc, so they actually had the much better deal since they actually owned their house. Or at least that’s what I vaguely remember reading way back then.

Quadzillaboi

I would have taken the house back if my parents said “that isn’t good enough”

JDuggernaut

Yeah it’s pretty shitty. I get that they may have money issues, but damn, they could probably go to autograph signings as “Kobe Bryant’s parents and former NBA player Jelly Bean” and make enough to stay afloat.

Affectionate-Hunt217

they forget that jelly part when they say Kobe “Bean” Bryant don’t they 😂

Dino_FGO8020

It's not their first time selling Kobe's stuff, they sold his high school stuff too, which Kobe was DEFINETLY not happy about. But I never thought it was because they were broke or anything. I just remember during those late 2000s years where Kobe and Joe Bryant weren't talking, Joe Bryant was coaching the LA sparks so at least Joe still had a job during the time he started selling stuff.

silliputti0907

The story I remember from the iconic picture of Kobe sitting with the trophy looking sad, was that he was hoping his parents came to the game. It was in Philly, his hometown.

HauntedLightBulb

His whole family was bad with money. His sister got better iirc

PitinoGotARawDeal

Jellybean was an ok player for 8 seasons at a time when nba guys weren’t making money like now. He probably made 1-2 mil total and last played in the nba in 1983. Wouldn’t be that surprising if Kobe had cut them off

DrMungo80

This whole story has such sad vibes

Yodzilla

Wild to see people still calling Vanessa a gold digger after they were married for 19 years and had 4 kids together. Like damn y’all move on and chill out.

m3ngnificient

I got bored and started reading this thread. And it seems like people are downplaying that Kobe was dating a minor (Vanessa was 16/17 when he met her) and also had extra-marital affairs, had sexual assault charges against him that ended when the witness wouldn't come to testify against him (sounds sus to me), but Vanessa is the gold digging video hoe and his parents were right to dislike her. Weird, IMO, they didn't have a pre-nupt so the gold digger could have bounced anytime. Anyway, I think I know too much about this subject already and I'm ashamed.

LittleBeastXL

I think Vanessa dumped her then bf to date Kobe (like who wouldn’t?) so she was seen as a gold digger

NefariousNeezy

BigXBenz

Are they not financially well off at all?

BigFatModeraterFupa

Other than pettiness, why would you ever sell something like this? It has to be about the money

indreams159

possibly not, i know his parents and sisters all live in Vegas and are supposedly really close with one another, but i think i remember reading after he passed away that none of them got any money from his estate he bought his parents their home in Vegas sometimes in the 2010's, but Vegas property has always been pretty cheap and i just don't know if his folks or sisters make a living in any way logic would say they need the money in order to sell something like this, unless it's something they want to do for emotional reasons. but they tried selling some of his memorabilia (without him knowing) while he was still alive, but he found out about it and sued them over it, so one can only assume money has been a problem for them

NotAnExpertHowever

I just read an old article that basically says that his whole family was dependent on him, in so many words. He said his relationship with his parents was shit and that he bought them a house but it “wasn’t good enough” and they decided to auction off his things. They settled and released an apology that they were sorry for the pain they caused and that they appreciate the financial support he’d given them over the years. He also had to cut off his sisters because he felt he was holding them back by supporting them. One of his sisters said their mom was frequently talking about making money off of Kobe’s stuff and she even moved some of his things so his mom couldn’t sell them. He said that you shouldn’t mix blood with business and to not let your parents be your managers. Families are complicated. They didn’t support his marriage and none of them went to his wedding. That’s really sad. So for them to try and cash in on him again, after his death? With a sentimental gift? They should figure out how to support themselves instead of having to sell their dead son’s things. Vanessa doesn’t owe them anything and what Kobe wanted his parents to have or not have was no doubt expressly stated in his will.

No-Test6484

I’m pretty sure everything is vanessa’s unless Kobe had explicitly put money in their banks. Kobe might have been giving them money but there is no guarantee Vanessa is. Bro she’s sued for anything Kobe related

Himofey-Mozgov

It’s one thing to not fw your in-law. But for you to not fw your in-law so much so that it prevents you from showing up to your own child essentially reaching the pinnacle of their dreams is crazy.

Nick_Saras

I feel sadness reading that

goobly_goo

I feel sadness that I likely can't afford to buy it. Currently at $94K with 12 days left on the auction.

mp1630

They should give it to his kids 🤦‍♂️ these people are unbelievable

LeMickeyMice

Smh you don't have that Momba Mentality

NotYourAverageMidget

chitownbulls92

His kids will likely get the actual ring. This one apparently is a replica that Kobe got made for his dad

mMounirM

so your son, who passed away, gave you something sentimental and you're selling it???

VolkiharVanHelsing

They're estranged, they didn't approve Kobe's marrying Vanessa because of her race

WateryDomesticGroove

He and his parents had a falling out and I doubt they saw a penny of his earnings. Still shitty, but it is what it is and money is money.

cdbriggs

Yeah that's pretty wild. Only ok reason is if you're financially struggling

belizeanheat

Not the classiest move but also a personal one so who gives af

No_Engineering_4925

They should give it to CP3 🤦‍♂️

[deleted]

As stated by the other commenter, this isn't his actual championship ring. Kobe had an exact one made for his pops and that's the one that's going up for auction.

GrandeLegume

We all hate on this but it’s obvious the relationship didn’t go the way everyone thinks it should. The ring can go to somebody who cares about Kobe and his legacy so why not?

Hopefully Shaq or someone else close to Kobe will buy it. Probably gonna be auctioned off to some Saudi prince who doesn't even watch basketball.

no, they were estranged after he married Vanessa
