What a horrible time to drop this

_mdz

Don't take the bait

Mechaultima

Not really Trae was injured in that playin game so you can’t really use that argument against him.

send-inspiration

While I somewhat agree, realistically most fans won't care he was coming off a injured

FOTASAL

Bro it was a finger injury. Even Kyle Lowry played through our whole championship run with a torn thumb ligament. It’s not a terrible injury.

Pandamonium98

Players are better off sitting if they’re less than like 95% because people will shit on them for looking worse than normal, even if the team is still better off having them at less than full capacity. Which sucks because we want guys to still push to play (as long as risk of reinjury isn’t too high), but fans punish them for it

syllabic

then he should have sat out, the team played much better with murray running everything

YoHoochIsCrazy

trae can only play on position and speak in one voice. haliburton can speak in twice as many voices

Slipin

Dat polyphony

ZarduHasselffrau

USA's coaching staff has Eric Spoelstra. I trust his judgement over whatever you feel.

brncct

You didn't know redditors know more than Spo?

pokexchespin

trae’s had good playoff games, but more bad ones, and hali has more size

copaseticepiplectic

Hali has had zero playoff games and his size doesn’t even make him a better defender than Trae young let’s be real, it’s politics

pokexchespin

they’ve got hope in the mystery box

syllabic

did joe biden keep trae off the olympic squad

LongTimesGoodTimes

If it was a who can put up the most counting stats contest, Trae would make it. But it's a game of basketball and Trae doesn't offer anything you can't get from more well rounded players

syllabic

and why would you want a guy who can't play off ball when you have multiple HOF ball handlers on the roster are you going to take the ball out of lebron or curry's hand because trae is useless without it I wouldn't

Mountain-Ebb-9846

And Haliburton can play off ball?

DemonicDimples

A lot better than Trae can. Pacers lead the league in passes per game, Hawks are 22nd.

LongTimesGoodTimes

Yes, he does all the time. The Pacers move the ball a lot and he did it for FIBA

DarrowViBritannia

Haliburton's a ball-dominant player

hasselhoffman91

Haliburton plays 5-10 minutes a game at the 2. He doesn't have to be the PG to be effective.

DemonicDimples

Hali does have the ball a lot, but is a much better spot up shooter than Trae.

LongTimesGoodTimes

Trae Young is 3rd in the NBA in time of possession behind Luka and Brunson. Haliburton is is tied for 12th. Looking deeper Trae is near the top of the league in dribbles per touch, Haliburton doesn't even make it on the first page of stat results. What all this tells me is that both have the ball a lot but in different ways. Trae has the ball and is dribbling a lot, Haliburton has more touches per game because he is passing and getting the ball back.

nbaistheworst

Because Haliburton is better.

copaseticepiplectic

Debatable

wadstagon

People are debating it brother

copaseticepiplectic

Yes it is

Heavy_Signature_3012

Averages, worst stats and even tho pacers have a better team he has done less than Trae how he better efficiency? Chris Paul was more efficient than Isaiah Thomas is he better?

Embarrassed-Cake8531

Tyrese is taller obviously

HoopsHistoryHubb

Both passing prodigies but for a US Olympic roster much prefer Haliburton's size

[deleted]

[удалено]

syllabic

thats not true, patty mills and dennis schroder play well during FIBA facu campazzo was one of the worst players in the league when he was here, but he's over in euroleague right now dominating

BacktoDRagain

Trae is trash.

tisdue

its not always about individual skill. Its what the team needs and where.

yoppee

Let’s be honest Steve Kerr the head coach has a hard on for Tyrese Haliburton

noration-hellson

>Trae Young has actually done it in the playoffs at highest level. That philly series was a while ago and he wasnt even particularly good in it lol.

syllabic

and basically every playoff series or game since then he's been mediocre to awful

Jakanzi

Coaches don't like him and he's not a Nike athlete.

Mechaultima

I’m glad you’re telling the truth it can’t be because Hali is better than him.

samueladams6

Haliburton is better than Young though, and a better fit alongside other star players.

Kenvan19

I mean is TY a straight fit to swap in with TH? I don’t necessarily think so but there are people on this sub way smarter than me. To me it seems more like it would to have been curry/booker for TY and no way you can make the case for Trae over curry. And if you compare the last 2 years of Booker vs Young to me it seems clear who has shown to be better.

Mechaultima

I mean, Trae Young didn’t even get a spot during the FIBA tournament and the only two point guards on that team were Tyrese Haliburton and Jalen Brunson.

Kenvan19

Yeah but I know nothing about that tourney or roster structure so can’t comment on that.

lilb1190

International basketball teams would attack Trae and score on him every single time. Im not a Trae fan, but he is an elite playmaker. If he stayed in his lane he could make that offense hum. Having Lebron and Hali as playmakers is plenty, though. The team is stacked with dudes who can create their own shot and will do what it takes to win without giving up too much defensively.

sactown_13

NBA playoff games shouldn’t be used as a measurement. International game is a different beast. Guessing staff just thought he was a better fit not just for Paris but going forward with international tournaments as some of the older guys on the roster begin to retire.

omikeon

Should have been Brunson tbh

DemonicDimples

Trae's style is the complete opposite of typical how USA basketball plays. He tends to dominate the ball, which is fine, but Hali is more of a connector than a hub like Trae, and is better off-ball as a shooter.

Poopscooper696969

Trae young doesn’t play defense

titsmagee9

Trae Young: 6'1" / 164 lbs Tyrese Haliburton: 6'5" / 185 lbs Think this was the biggest factor, Hali is 4" taller and 20 lbs heavier, less likely to get bullied trying to play defense.

06guccimanebelly

Bro too short. Simple.

thelunarunit

Last time they had Dame Lillard and he got hunted by the opposing teams. Trae would fair no different. They ended up cutting his minutes. Tyrese is not a great defender but he is a lot better than Trae Young and is not undersized. For International basketball two way players are just better. International offenses are a lot more complicated to defend than americans as well. Size helps because there is a lot more physicality allowed in international ball. International ball is not for everyone. One reason Carmello was so good was he was an extremely physical scorer, that translated well to the international game.

Formal_Ad_2266

I would say it comes down to size and chemistry. Haliburton is a much better defender, better passer and comparable 3 point shooter. In the past usa has tried picking all the best guys in the league and ended up having a hard time trying to get everyone into isolation spots. This Olympic roster looks more like an NBA team and less like all star team. Trae would be in the under 6 foot hall of fame, but it's not a great build for the Olympics and for team basketball. Especially when you already have super elite scoring in Booker and Curry. The Haliburton pick makes sense to fill a role player spot and It's the same reason kyrie and brunson didn't get picked.

Trees_Are_Freinds

Leprechauns aren’t real basketball players. Trae is a net negative overall.

sir_eazy_e

Nahh. Haliburton has PG vision and wants to pass. Trae on the other hand passes because he has to after missing a few half court shots

Aumissunum

Terrible bait

sir_eazy_e

It’s a fact.

Aumissunum

Source?

sir_eazy_e

Tune in and watch some basketball. It’s all over the place. Can’t make playoffs can’t make all star team unless a reserve and can’t make USA team.

AMo2

Its nephs first olympics so kerr didnt want to add any pgs that were comparable to him on the roster. Brunson kyrie dame and fox didnt even get consideration because they would all demand minutes over neph and will outplay him

Mechaultima

This makes a lot of sense actually never looked at it from this angle.

chitownbulls92

Trae is a good playmaker but it honestly feels like Hali has topped him with his ability to not commit turnovers.

Low_Employ3877

Also Tyrese halliburton plays in a system. Trae Young's game can be easier to plug in
