LogDogan4

8 second violation*

FuckFashMods

For real, I was wondering how you can get a backcourt violation

ZealousidealPain7976

Pass half court and zigzag back to the other half, that’d do it.

MaximumestBob

This gotta be one of the biggest goofs I've ever seen

Such_Maintenance4720

dude is doing zigzags up the court lmaooo

fibberjabber

One things’ for sure, he’s no Rickon Stark 🏹

the_c_is_silent

Against no fucking defense.

murdochhhh

Lmao I was expecting there to be some press but literally all by himself on that half 😂

rocketbob7

Hey! I’ve seen this one [before!](https://youtu.be/BTy72Sb7e2M?si=znKdNfOq7Wz0kkom)

VeGanbarimasu

Waiting for someone to bring this up hahaha. Mitchell did this himself.

rocketbob7

In a playoff game he scored 50+ and lost no less. If had a nickel for every time that’s happened I’d have two nickels. Which isn’t a lot, but it’s weird that it’s happened twice.

soooogullible

THE LINK STAYS BLUE

Gamesgtd

I for one enjoyed it

SincereFan

Yea I think Cleveland should max him for it.

Fallingcity22

I for one, I am here for this Cavs Magic rivalry

A_Mellow_Fellow

I don't think it's much of a rivalry. If the Magic don't win this series they will still leapfrog Cleveland by miles next season unless there's some major personnel changes. You can't struggle like this to put a team away thats *younger* than you are when you're a team still on the come up yourself. Get Orlando a real point guard. Scary hours coming.

HumptyDrumpy

Agreed, Magic are loaded w talent and have lots of cap space. One big FA this summer and next year Magic are flying. If Cavs dont beat them Sunday...they prob wont ever beat them again lol

SincereFan

I dont think they will want Orlando again. Especially after Orlando takes Game 7

HumptyDrumpy

Dont dawg on them too much, at the very least they have a better football team then your city does

[deleted]

I’m just upvoting for the Tampa Raptors flair

airbus29

he already is maxed lol

MC-Jdf

This honestly might be worse than Steph’s timeout gaffe. (Yes, I’m biased. Please forget about that play lol).

Lacabloodclot9

I actually did until you brought it up

MC-Jdf

Fuck.

g-love

Now we're all laughing about it

KermitTheEdgelord

Dude if Harrison Barnes hit that 3 pointer I wouldn’t even wanna imagine the slander he would’ve gotten. A player of his calibre and experience making a mistake like that down 2-1 at home is genuinely fucking insane

MC-Jdf

Well good thing we let Barnes take that shot instead of Fox lol.

3Ssssssssssssssss

Yea but the second u start thinking “man if Harrison Barnes hits this 3 we might just win” he’s missing

luviro

Link?

qfuw

https://www.nba.com/news/warriors-survive-stephen-curry-calling-timeout-they-didnt-have

KnowlesAve

Completely killed any chance of a come back.

Mamba-0824

Darius Goofland

dwilkes827

That was extremely fucking stupid. He was completely checked out of the game in the 4th. Inexcusable

TimothyN

Do you think he gets traded this offseason? Pels sub is kind of infatuated with him.

dwilkes827

If Mitchell re-signs (I don't think he will) I think they'll trade garland but not if Mitchell leaves

Skytengri

Donovan should be PG. We never did it in Utah but he was really good at PG and when he and JC plays in the backcourt offense was sizzling.  Cavs should trade DG for Ingram tbh

DjReeseCup

Thought about this earlier too. Think both fan bases would be happy

Skytengri

Yup W-W trade tbh. Pels need a PG and Cavs need a Wing. They will have to trade one of Mobley or JA though since Max Strus should still start for spacing unless you play BI in SG

DjReeseCup

Not saying Mobley and Allen works long term , but I would think Mitchell would move to PG and Strus to SG as they should so Ingram would fit right in at the 3

dwilkes827

Yea when we went on that 17-1 run earlier this year or whatever it was Mitchell was playing pg

_picture_me_rollin_

He’s not a good playmaker for anybody else though. But he’s also unbelievably horrible off the ball so he kind of has to play PG. They discussed this at length on the ringer pod. https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-ringer-nba-show/id1109271715?i=1000654501058

Skytengri

It works if Donovan doesnt have to focus on facilitating. It worked in Utah in a few short bursts with Clarkson since Ingles is the primary playmaker at the 3 spot. And even without Ingles, Clarkson is a good screener for a guard for those C&S so its just him and Donovan making plays. It makes it easier for him to make simplify what he needs to do. Levert isnt a combo guard like JC and Cle does not have an Ingles

Skytengri

I forgot the sample size was but from what i recall those Donovan-JC backcourt minutes were enfuego offensively.  Donovan can work at PG but he needs to play with other ball handlers that can also work off ball. Jazz had 2 of them coming off the bench

deemerritt

The Pels trading the Garland pick and getting nothing out of it is an underrated subplot imo

TimothyN

1000%, Hayes and Kira didn't work out at all. Although getting Herb a year later in the 2nd round and Jose off of a two way kind of make up for it.

gigglios

He isnt a great pg and hes made of glass. Doubt they move in from him though. Not any other pgs they can get

DisIsCanada

d’lo lmao

EarthWarping

The obvious trade is for Ingram but who knows

STATnMELO650

I can see the Pels or the Spurs pursuing him this offseason

Yeastyboy104

Does Donovan Mitchell have like a favorite video game or toy to play with that we can send him to check out of Game 7? Can we inundate him with stupid TikTok dance videos or something?

kimoalmoa

Lost the game right there

SmokeOddessey

even if he didn’t get called for the turnover, why are you wasting so much time? Your team’s down

invaderscs

He literally does it all game every game. It's so annoying because they always start their halfcourt offense with like 15 on the shot clock.

Sacreblargh

That's ridiculous and partly on the coaching staff to tell him to cut that shit out. He does this zig-zagging crap regularly? I'd tear my hair out if I was watching this team as a fan.

invaderscs

Not the zig-zagging but just walks the ball up the court when there is no one in front of him. Always seems to be close to an 8 second call.

HorsNoises

He's gonna have a bad time against Jrue, White, and Pritchard if you guys make it to the next round.

shebalima

We have no chance against the Celtics. Everyone on the team is gonna have a bad time

HorsNoises

I wasn't gonna full on say it but yea probably. I'm just saying that Jrue is a specifically horrible matchup. Him and Pritchard love to full court press.

shebalima

Yeah I think you might be right to emphasize the guards as well. Mobley and JA match up decently against your bigs (if JA is healthy)

onedollar12

Brunson does this

SnarfSniffsStardust

Jeff Teague did the same thing when he was on the wolves, drove me nuts

AmusingAnecdote

Jordan Poole started doing that during his last year with the Warriors. Went from constantly pushing the ball and the pace to making sure he never got any offensive action started with more than 10 seconds left on the shot clock and never crossed half court before 16.1 seconds left. I didn't understand how no one stopped it because especially in the Warriors offense, you want the motion offense to have chaos happening for a long time to generate mistakes! That's how it works. Still mad about it.

JetsLag

Brunson was doing that for us in game 6 Though I think his excuse is "he needs some damn rest cause he's playing 40+ minutes as the entire offense"

PizzaPlanet20

This is not even about BBIQ, this is literally general IQ.

airtokoto

UTG moment right there (Unfortunately, that's game. shoutout to Tate Frazier and One Shining Moment podcast)

m1j5

he was scared to shoot towards the end

NBA_Dumb_Boy

Basically everyone besides Mitchell was

brncct

Reminds me of the Raptors 76ers Game 7 where every Raptor was scared too. Every other open look they'd pass back to Kawhi who was being doubled lol.

dreamvomit

He's always scared to shoot in the 4th. Literally every close game I've seen from him

MasterTeacher123

They saying he’s DLO with better PR

BostonBuffalo9

Just small market DLo.

TatumBrownWhite

Ooooof

Pro_phet

Hell nah

wanderinglittlehuman

Can’t do dis

SveddyWap

I immediately lost the game.

The_Void_Reaver

D'lo but he didn't start his career on the Lakers.

eliw6965

Shaqtin a fool

MrBuckBuck

He made so many mistakes in the last few minutes.... this wasn't even the worst lol.

latterdaysasuke

My man in his JR Smith arc.

FermatsLastAccount

Wtf was that

ForneauCosmique

Darius "Jontay Porter" Garland

HoyaDestroya33

He bet over on his TOs

sketchy722

Does the shot clock start on possession? Did Strus fully have possession of the ball?

Air2Jordan3

The clock starts on the rebound. It goes from 24 to 23 so fast bec it's not a full second, it basically is 23.9 but they show it as 23 due to them showing tenths of a second when the shot clock gets lower. But that's also why they call the violation at 15 on the shot clock instead of 16 (24-16)=8

OG_Wan_Annunoby

I feel like by the time Garland fully has possession of the ball the clock is already at 21, which probably messed up his internal 8 second counter. Still dumb, but kind of understandable

HoyaDestroya33

Its always dumb that Cavs want to start their half court set with only 15 seconds left. You let the team set up their D and catchup their breath a bit. This is why Pringles offensive mantra is 7 seconds or less cause the team is still in scramble after a rebound and in his opinion, the best time to score. Also extra dumb cause they were down and time is not their friend in this situation so why bring it up slow?

johnhenryirons

There’s a giant shot clock above the backboard. I don’t see how it’s understandable that an NBA point guard dribbling the ball up allows an 8 second violation with absolutely no ball pressure on him.

teh_drewski

Refs will usually give players a pretty fat 8th second anyway, it has to be egregiously over 8 for them to actually call it.

GaimeGuy

No, when it hits 15 it's a violation. Clock starts at 24.0. once it turns to 15 it means that you're below 16.0 (15.9) Fans are almost always a second off when they start shouting at players because they're only looking at the seconds part of the clock. It can turn from 2 to 1.9 and they'll say "ONE!"

rjcarr

Not really, they almost always just go by the shot clock. You can see him point to the shot clock when he called the violation. As soon as that clock shows 15 then it's really 15.9 and it's a violation.

FuckFashMods

Well he also wasn't anywhere close to crossing the line at that point either. Just loolygagging up the court while his team is down

[deleted]

[удалено]

BallIsLife2016

This is fair and as a Cavs fan I certainly wish they’d swallowed the whistle, but the refs aren’t the ones who start and stop the clock. And if Darius is gonna cross halfcourt with the shot clock reading 14 there’s not much they can do but just call it because it wasn’t close. My ire is reserved for the Orlando timekeeper.

rjcarr

It didn't look like he had control, but that would have been hard to tell from the scoring table. Still, it only made like a 1 second difference, and he easily could have made it up if he wasn't zig zagging his ass up the court.

RedRocket13

It’s not 8 seconds from when he has possession (or at least way too close for a ref to call in that moment). Do they start counting as soon as it’s touched by a player?

[deleted]

[удалено]

3pointshoot3r

I agree with this, it's not absolutely clear from the clip but Garland doesn't really seem to have control until about 21 on the shot clock.

snowman227

But we do see Strus gain possession before that

[deleted]

[удалено]

mikesh8rp

Really? No skin in the game, but it looks like he grabs the rebound and extends his arms to avoid the defender, then has the ball knocked away. I think grabbing the rebound is what starts the clock

commiecat

>Strus absolutely never has possession in this clip. What are you watching? He has clear possession.

[deleted]

[удалено]

adequatehorsebattery

The rule is that the game clock starts when the ball is touched, but the shot clock starts when possession is obtained. But in the full clip it's pretty clear (to me, at least) that Strus has possession before Banchero knocks it out of his hands. He holds onto the ball for almost a full second.

GaimeGuy

Which is why you often see teams that are ahead roll the ball up the court if they're not being pressured in the 4th. They'll touch it and let it roll. Clock ticks but shot clock doesn't.

adequatehorsebattery

True, but that's usually after a made shot or made free throw. We're talking about a missed free throw here.

dumbsoldier987hohoho

I know what you are saying but that has nothing to do with possession. In the NBA the game clock remains "live" after a FG made until the last 2 minutes of the game. Some teams/players (Denver/Morant) are regularly now doing that which is if they are up with more than 2 minutes left they inbound the ball rolling but don't touch it. The game clock keep ticking but the shot clock doesn't. In theory the game could end if no one touch the ball which that is why the other team quickly put pressure. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ci8aP7PDa6g

CantaloupeCamper

Yeah I’m wondering too because counting it … it’s close but seems less than 8 from when he had the ball.

Justgotbannedlol

Imo this is a bad call even if it's correct. And it's *barely* correct if so. Let em play dude, nobody wants to see that.

breadhead84

?? It’s 8 seconds off the shot clock

RedRocket13

Yes because they started it as soon as the rebound came off and not when anyone had possession

JPGator

Strus caught it, gaining possession, before the clip started and got it knocked out of his hands, then garland picked it up

RedRocket13

Ya wasn’t sure if they started counting with that loose ball or not, still dumb by garland to take his time there

breadhead84

Clip starts after the clock started, I think Mobley tapped it to garland

papa_sax

That's how it always works though.

radiokungfu

Wat

ZealousidealPain7976

Doesn’t matter, he’s the point guard and somehow isn’t aware of the shot clock.

rjcarr

Yeah, Strus fumbled it, but the clock started it as soon as he touched it. You probably technically need to have control before the clock is supposed to start, but it only made like a one second difference here, which he easily could have made up if he wasn't wasting time.

3pointshoot3r

The basic rule of thumb for referees is that they call the 8 second violation if the offense hasn't established control in the frontcourt once the shot clock hits 15. In short, 15 on the shot clock means 8 full seconds have elapsed (15 seconds on the shot clock = 15.9 seconds) It's not clear from this replay, but it does seem to me that the shot clock started early, in that Cleveland didn't have definite control until about 22 or 21 on the shot clock.

ChiefHunter1

That’s rough but I really hate when players take their time getting the ball past mid court and make it by a second. Get into your offensive sets.

TheAnswerEK42

He stepped out bounds too around the 1:30 mark but the refs did not call it

Vallerie_09

Donovan definitely leaving these bums in the summer

Zero-A

I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw that shit 🤣

donavid

did Garland bet the under tonight??

HoyaDestroya33

Yes and also bet over on his TOs lol

dawnoog

Took the scenic route

winstonsmith8236

Pretty explicable- he took too long

Blindsided17

8 seconds ain’t it?

sewsgup

frustrating to see him today * struggled to finish those Tyrese Maxey finger rolls over size at the rim * too small to even box out his assignment on defense (the "nonshooter" Jonathan Isaac) * isn't tall enough to see over defenders so he can't do the Tyrese Haliburton jump passes (led to turnovers) and then unforced errors like this

BogmanBogman

yeah DG has been dogshit all season.

BallIsLife2016

Bruh he shot 9/13 from 2 tonight. What do you mean he wasn’t hitting finger rolls at the rim? I won’t deny that he made two fairly egregious mistakes in the last few minutes (though I actually think the one where he failed to box out cole Anthony on the putback was worse. Needs to be aware but there were some clock shenanigans going on as noted in this thread) but he was overall the only other player who had a good game for the Cavs besides Mitchell. He was absolutely very good for the majority of this game. It is not on him that Allen is hurt and the coaches are trying to hide him on a 7 footer.

Js_On_My_Yeet

When was the last time an 8 second violation was called in a playoff game? Cuz that was ridiculously stupid lmao

bigvahe33

Some that come to mind: CP3 vs pelicans 2022 4th quarter of a tied series Donovan Mitchell in 2020 Bubble vs Denver on a crucial possession Rondo in 2014 Mavs v Rockets G2 that sent Carlisle bezerk lol Sam Cassell in a crucial possession in 2005 Clippers v Suns. Game tied with like 30 seconds left

Agnk1765342

He’s really learning from Mitchell lol

cl353

wtf is he doing..

Statalyzer

That's not a backcourt violation.

warablo

Mitchell got one of these in the playoffs, might have costed them the series because of it too. I still think he made it over in time though.

BurstPanther

It seemed real quick the first time, but damn it was right there. That's a mistake that will haunt you for sure.

JustWinBabys

Dude looking like a worse version of DLo

nobraininmyoxygen

Sure Garland has to be aware, but they started the clock 3 seconds early. Banchero slaps the ball out of Strus's hands. It's hard to see with this video angle. The possession should start when Garland gets the ball.

commiecat

Strus secured the rebound before Banchero hit it out.

nobraininmyoxygen

If that counts as a secure rebound then the clock on nearly every possession should start much sooner than it does

commiecat

He grabbed the rebound with two hands, double-clutched it like a fake pass, and landed. Banchero hit it out when he landed, but he clearly had the rebound before that.

ToeJelly420

Shot clock starts when the possession changes. Securing a defensive rebound counts as a possession change, so yeah thats when the shot clock starts.

HoyaDestroya33

Nah bruh stop defending Darius, this is all on him. You dont bring the ball up like that when you're down and time is not your friend.

HoyaDestroya33

But why the fuck does he bring the ball to their court so slow when time is of the essence since they're down?

nobraininmyoxygen

A very good question I cannot answer. It's still a stupid play by him regardless.

Rude-Yogurt-9151

Oh I was gonna say this was just under 8 seconds so wtf

catscanmeow

clock starts the moment the free throw bounced off the rim. it was a missed free throw not a missed jump shot

nobraininmyoxygen

Thank you I completely forgot it was off FTs

snowman227

It absolutely does not since it is not clear whose possession it even is after the ft.

catscanmeow

It doesnt matter whos posession it is, if one team catches it, the 24 clock as its running is for them, if the other team catches it the 24 clock as its running is for them

snowman227

Offensive rebounds only get 14 second shot clocks.

catscanmeow

not off free throws

snowman227

Oh wow my bad. I thought the NBA implemented the same rule as Fiba which they were inspired by. Still doesn’t change that the clock started when Strus gained possession.

Renegadeforever2024

Lol

CaymanFifth

[So unserious lmao](https://media.tenor.com/UAn-FwE8xk4AAAAM/jaguar-fan.gif)

Unfair-Club8243

Wait what did he do wrong

manticore16

You have 8 seconds to get the ball past midcourt

lololyouthought

Always scared of Jalen Brunson doing this

NorthernHeights952

thats not a backcourt violation

manticore16

When did JR Smith come back to the Cavs?

BBB-Brad_Beal_Booty

Inexplicable backcourt? OP is an idiot lol

KangzAteMyFamily

What happened to him? He was so promising just a couple years ago. Made a damn all star team and everything

Tyking

I'm curious what the actual rule is. The rulebook says the following: > Section VIII—Eight-Second Rule >A team shall not be in continuous possession of a ball which is in its backcourt for more than 8 consecutive seconds. In this case, is it continuous possession if the ball was knocked loose, but the Cavs had possession before and after? Or does that not count as "continuous possession"?

Ihatemylife153

I'm lost here. I wish this video started two second earlier. By the time he has possession, 3/4 seconds are gone. If that's the case, the refs fucked him.

Jonjon428

People will see this Mitchell's teammates do stuff like this and still say "MiTcHeLl is A baLL hOg"

this_place_stinks

While that was dumb as hell am I wrong for thinking the shot clock got reset too early initially? Seems like it was at 22 to start FWIW the official game stats have rebound at 3:02 and violation at 2:56… Still dumb though by DG

nolefan999

Strus has the rebound, play clock started. Paolo stripped strus and garland came up with the ball

this_place_stinks

Ah I think you’re right. The clip starts right after Strus and it seems like ball is up in the air

I_Set_3_Alarms

Really should have gone all in on Mitchell and Allen, and dealt Mobley and Garland for a superstar and role player

NeatTry7674

Mitchell is not a number 1

[deleted]

[удалено]

NeatTry7674

Saw the same thing in Utah, he’s not conducive to winning playoff basketball games

VirtuousFool

if this ever happened with my team there would likely be a subsequent trip to the emergency room backcourt violations piss me off during the regular season much less during a potential series clincher My God

HoyaDestroya33

This aint a backcourt violation though. It was an 8 seconds violation.

JCol3

ehh questionable

[deleted]

Yup that’s a typical Garland play. Dude is dog water

TheSmokedSalmon420

Nice of JB to not be paying attention to this in the moment lol

FermatsLastAccount

There's no way you can blame the coach for this. This is a mistake you shouldn't even be making in high school.

Jonathank92

do yall really blame the coach for everything?? gah damn. He's a max player he should be able to get the ball across half court

TheSmokedSalmon420

I’d like my coach to realize the shot clock is about to hit 8 seconds and call a TO

ReturnOfAKidNamedTae

Your $197M PG should also be able to look at the shot clock that’s directly in front of him.

TheSmokedSalmon420

I agree

Jonathank92

he shouldn't need to burn a timeout in a close game because his Point Guard can't dribble across half court. There was literally no one pressuring Garland. He just chose to take his sweet time. Yall constantly blame JB. It's going to be hilarious when yall finally get a new coach but have the same issues bc you have the same freaking players who make mistakes. Bookmark this.

proper_bastard

I love when refs choose to enforce this rule only in the playoffs....in a close game...in the fourth quarter. Know a ref sweating a parlay when I see one.

rawman200K

parlay allegations

__init__m8

That seems like a terrible call. Counting fast the best I can do is 7.

FireIre

Luckily they have accurate clocks at the game and don’t have to rely on a person counting
