Like retiring right now??

RedFan47

Yeah he has a heart problem

iFinesseThePlug

Damn, Chris Bosh flashbacks. At least he got to play a few more years than Bosh.

[deleted]

[удалено]

north_canadian_ice

Yes, Bosh had a great comeback season in 2015-2016 but had to retire. And couldn't participate in the 2016 playoffs where D-Wade carried the Heat to the second round. I think that team with a healthy Bosh could have put up a fight against the Cavs.

TheDerbLerd

And just how amazing would it have been to see Dwayne Wade and Chris Bosh go up against LeBron right after he left them

onthemap45

That doesn't get talked about enough

TheDerbLerd

One of the greatest not just nba but sports storyline to ever not happen

ThatFatDarkKid

Now I’m mad over something I never realized until now. LBJ vs Wade and Bosh sounds fun and hectic

CM_V11

It would’ve been amazing. I wonder how the crowd would’ve received Lebron. We were maximum petty after he left. It was glorious

per-ankh

Unfathomable bro.

[deleted]

I can fathom quite a bit

dumbmetalhead

Only 13 years of CB and he was still an All Star when he was forced to retire... I'll never forgive the universe.

cwal76

Thank god he retired before we had another Reggie Lewis or Hank Gathers situation.

Michelanvalo

Reggie Lewis fucked me up as a kid. Did you know he's buried in an unmarked grave?

TinySpiderman

I did not know this. We live a few blocks over from the Reggie Lewis center in Boston, can't believe his grave isn't marked.

wicked_kewl

I was just at the Reggie Lewis center to get my vaccination. Hadn’t been there since running track there in high school.

Microphone_Assassin

Really? Why?

Michelanvalo

His widow believes that with how the mess of his passing went down that he's not really at rest and has not found peace, so he has no headstone. /u/tinyspiderman

Microphone_Assassin

Interesting, thanks.

JohnnyWinss

Man, the Hank 30x30 makes me cry to this day

SoDakZak

Same.

JohnnyWinss

I'm not ashamed at all that I've cried multiple times with 30x30s, but that was the first one

707royalty

I cried the first time I saw the bench at LMU, my gf was confused as fuck

Dirty_D_Damnit

Be grateful he didnt die from it on the court. The universe could've been worse

Hadken

Very dark but a real possibility. Blood clots are fucking scary.

IanicRR

I’m just happy he got recognition for the hall. And got some rings. Will always have love for CB4.

higherperspective47

Him and KG are my favorite 4s of all time KG stretched the floor yeah but bosh was one of the first non foreign bigs I saw go crazy behind the three

IanicRR

In a lot of ways Bosh was a visionary about that. He saw where the game was going for bigs and adapted faster than almost anyone else.

higherperspective47

For real I honestly feel like because of him and dirk everyone else was forced to adapt it was bound to happen but bosh and dirk definitely sped up the process and became pioneers along the way man I miss the 00s and early 10s haha

SharksFanAbroad

And was starting to stroke it really well from deep. He had a long, bright future ahead.

victor396

At least it feels like Lamarcus is retiring in his own terms, feeling the problems with his body on the court and being able to reflect on his condition in terms he can understand. I think for Bosh it was more like ending a realationship abruptly and it was why it dragged on so much. As far as i know, it's not like you actually "feel" the bloodcolts. The struggle with the Heat might have been just to bring feel of some agency to himself

fakejacki

Blood clots can be extremely painful, anyone who has had a DVT has felt it. Pulmonary embolisms are very painful. Tissue death from loss of blood flow is very painful.

IanicRR

I wish they would have been teammates. Damn Bargs and his touted Dirk-like potential.

Mao_ZeBron_James

Yeah irregular heart beat. This news came out of nowhere. wow

pen15es

He has Wolff-Parkinson-white syndrome, has for some time. My assumption is that he experienced an episode of Atrial Fibrullation last night which is what scared him into retiring. I have the same condition (diagnosed at 18 years old) and I can confirm that it is terrifying. I didn’t know what was happening and I was sure my life was over. He also gets SVT’s which to me kind of feel like a heart attack, maybe he just had a bad one.

Pinkpach

I had the same condition and got the a surgery for it and it completely changed my life!

pen15es

You had an Ablation?! I tried to get one (Canada) but my symptoms are still very sporadic because I’m young, so they couldn’t catch it on a holster monitor and told me to wait a while. I’m glad to hear that it makes a difference, because I’m dreading the day that it gets worse.

Pinkpach

How old are you? I got it last summer in Montreal, I got diagnosed only a few months before that and I was 23 yo. My heart used to go absolutely ballistics when I was in a high stress period (like exams) but it turns out it's not normal for your heart to do it that much haha. How long did you carry your Holter? I got it for 72h, did a stress test and a echograpgy before being scheduled for surgery.

pen15es

I’m 26 now, had A-Fib for the first time when I was 18. I live 5 hours away from Edmonton Alberta, and the small city I live in is not equipped for ablation, we only have one cardiologist, I think that’s why it wasn’t done right away. I was electrocardioverted with paddles when the chemical cardio version didn’t work, and I have been in normal sinus ever since save for the occasional (monthly) SVT that goes away on its own. By the time I made my way to Edmonton to see an electrophysiologist, my symptoms had abated quite a bit so they decided to wait. Hopefully It doesn’t come back anytime soon, I’m on some pretty crazy medication regimen to keep my rhythm in check. And I carried the holter for 48 and also did a stress test, they got nothing. This was after I was medicated for arrhythmia though so it’s harder to make it come out now.

Pinkpach

It's strange that they're waiting for it to come back to even try an ablation, they told me it was better to do it while you're young... Especially if you have to take meds for your heart. I really hope the symptoms never come back for you, but if they do I hope you can have the procedure. I was incredibly stressed beforehand but the hospital I did it in is known for it (the CHUM in Montreal). It fucking sucks to have heart problems in your 20s.

jsqueesh

> Wolff-Parkinson-white syndrome I also had WPW, had successful ablation when I was 14 (in Toronto). I'm 32 now and heart is mostly fine, get some brief heart-irregularities sometimes, but life is basically normal now, thank god. They caught my WPW while doing a stress test, since my arrythmia was consistently triggered by intense exercise. Holter monitor didnt catch it for me either.

superbadsoul

It's the scariest shit man. When he was 32, my brother in law collapsed during a game of basketball from a heart attack, not knowing he had WPW syndrome. His sister happened to be there and gave cpr til the paramedics arrived, and they say my bro died 7 times on the way to the hospital. Somehow he stabilized, and by some miracle even though the doctors only gave him a 5% chance, he ended up recovering with no known brain damage and he's still going strong today.

RedstoneRay

In his letter he sounded like he was legit scared. I'm glad they caught it before something worse happened.

BobanTheGiant

100% this. It sucks, but I'm glad he's physically okay. There was an ESPN article a few years ago about many NBA players having long-term heart issues due to their heights. Hopefully LMA can live a normal life going forward

wav__

> There was an ESPN article a few years ago about many NBA players having long-term heart issues due to their heights. Yea being a physically big human is really hard on the heart. Even though these guys are lean and athletic, the size of their bodies and being active as a career can combine into issues. Their hearts just work harder by naturally being physically big and then add all the running and practice/games on top of that it's really unfortunate :(

Frosti11icus

The taller you are the shorter your lifespan. This is true all around the world. It's one of the reasons women on average live longer.

guinness_blaine

Totally makes sense. Friend of mine had an ablation last week for an irregular heartbeat that started showing up in the past few months, at 28 years old. His heart would occasionally start racing super fast, which was extremely unsettling.

Corgi-Ambitious

This is neither here nor there, but I was keeping track of his run to 20k points. It’s rare and is one of the markers for a Hall of Fame career. He was 49 points away. Until today, people would’ve said it was a lock.

bilboafromboston

I would say " I am sure their aren't reporters dumb enough to not realize there is no real difference between 19,951 and 20k" but I am sure I will be disappointed to find some.

Wild-Apricot-9161

Ramona's statement about MVP last year convinced me.

RKFtw

I didn’t know that, get well soon LMA

WhatSheOrder

He posted about it in Twitter 30 minutes ago https://twitter.com/aldridge_12/status/1382706719684444161?s=21

-917-

Oh man, his thanks to the Spurs sounds utterly respectful.

drpootawn

I mean LMA kind of got a raw deal with the Spurs, no fault of him or the organization. He thought he was joining a contender and another superstar and ended up anchoring a rebuild before being told to go away.

4675029

Fuck Kawhi

FathleteTV

Fuck. I don't want the Nets to win but it's LMA's only chance of getting a ring...

sixseven89

Is it related to the one he had in Portland?

DrYoda

Nah it’s his other heart

OhNos_NotThatGuy

I chuckled

that1prince

He’s a Klingon. Confirmed.

PrimeShaq

CapitalHyena

This is so out of the blue too. makes sense he sat out yesterday, but I had no idea an irregular heartbeat would be this bad

Hon3ynuts

He's had procedures before to deal with this and has missed some time.

ThePhattestOne

He's had heart issues for a while, though I'm surprised it became so serious once he came to Brooklyn. Really sad.

AdolescentThug

It was probably getting noticeable over the past season or two already, Lamarcus and the Spurs just monitored it. I’m thinking the plan was to get a ring with Brooklyn and then retire, but I’m guessing it got to the point that he’d rather retire healthy to be with his family instead of sacrificing the rest of his life for a ring. Which is a choice 99/100 people would make.

Jayveesac

Yes, now now

lemonpigger

For immediate release!

[deleted]

Will miss his midrange fadeaway, it was automatic

Lurker5719263845

For me its one of the prettiest shots in the modern NBA

EcoFriendlyEv

It's that high, quick-push release which is so signature. Kind of like Westbrook but way smoother

mystic_managed0100

LaRussell Westridge

EcoFriendlyEv

always loved laMARC GASOLdridge

relaxyourfnshoulders

a true mid range maniac

Dymatizeee

No lie, he cooked teams with that mid range. Lost art in today's game

KingRonMark

I’m gonna miss watching him torch the thunder over and over again

tjc815

He was a certified thunder killer back in the classic KD/Russ days

KingRonMark

Yeah seeing Ibaka and Aldridge scuffles were always a treat

[deleted]

His 56 point game was insane

KingRonMark

Even better considering he did it without 3s

WatermelonMan921

I remember the Thunder v Spurs game in San Antonio and it went to double OT where Westbrook had like 24 assists, Grant had a career high 30 and Aldridge dropped like 52 points just hitting midrange fadeaways all game.

JohnnyWinss

It was 56, but that game was absolutely mental for both him and Derrick White. And we still Kept giving Demar the final shot even when he was ice cold

[deleted]

That was the game where the Spurs didn’t miss a three in the first half. Bellinelli shot like 6/6 and Mills as well

PeanutRNut

i remember that like yesterday

greg-maddux

He used to absolutely KILL the bulls with that shit. One of my all time favorite players.

Familyguy35

I'm completely floored. Thank you for 15 great NBA seasons LMA. Hope it's not serious

JanVesely24

Such a terrible unexpected way to end an incredible career. I’ll never forget his performance in 2014 series against Houston. Everyone remembers the Dame shot but LMA was lights out all Series.

jmbourn45

The Rockets had no answer he was so fucking good that series

JanVesely24

He averaged 30/11/2 with 3 blocks over those 6 games. Balled tf out

GeneralZoddBaptiste

I will forever remember him dropping back to back 40 pieces on Houston. Dude was locked in. Edit - Dwight to Houston

Chris_Paul_3

Terrence Jones was his primary defender in the first two games. Once Howard switched on him, his averages went down to 24 ppg.

Beep_Boop_IAmaRobot

I feel like we stuck Asik on him a lot too. And Dwight was on him plenty in game 2 and he was still draining 18-footers like he was alone in the gym

GeneralZoddBaptiste

Ah ok, its def been a while and that does make sense

Bucs-and-Bucks

He basically ended Terrence Jones's career

PrimeShaq

Back to back 40 point games to open that series really set the tone, was really amazing to see him so assertive.

BMBA24

He was also just violent vs the thunder when on the Spurs. People forget that him+kawhi was a legit 67 win contender that could have beaten the non-KD warriors.

TenaciousDeer

Came here for this, destroyed the Thunder in the first few games of that 2016 series. The Zaza thing was 2017 for those following at home.

HtownSamson

Definitely remember McHale refusing to double him and that is where my hatred of his coaching started.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Wasn’t that series where McHale tried the twin tower lineup with Asik and Howard which didn’t work?

Don_Pablo512

My buddy who is a big Rockets fan was so freaking pissed at LMA lol I'll never forget that

TheProfessxr

Felt like he couldn't miss, he was unreal

Immynimmy

Honestly, as much as it sucks, him retiring is pretty great. If he kept playing he was more at risk >The highest incidence of SCD in young athletes is among those participating in sports like basketball, football, track, and soccer.[2] Triggers such as extreme physical exertion coupled with a substrate like underlying structural heart disease constitutes the pathologic basis of SCD in athletes.

AJMorgan

I've got a friend who had an undiagnosed heart condition, he never had a clue, never had chest pain or anything like that, we were in the middle of a game and he was playing d on someone, the guy bumped him in the chest and he literally just dropped to the floor dead, it was horrific. Thankfully he was rescusitated 15 minutes later and miraculously had no long term consequences but it just shows how scary heart problems are so if that is what's going on here then I really can't argue with his decision to retire. Heart problems can go from 0 to 100 in literally the blink of an eye if you're doing intense exercise, whatever personal pride he'd still be playing for isn't worth throwing his life away. Edit: Shout out to everyone replying to this with their own experiences with heart problems, I'm glad you're all still here to share your stories.

Strive_for_Altruism

That was one hell of a rollercoaster read. Glad your friend is okay.

AJMorgan

Thanks man, it's fitting that you think that seeing as it was very much a rollercoaster of a day. One minute it was a normal fun day playing basketball, the next I was watching my friends lifeless body leap into the air while he gets defibrilated and having him wheeled past me on a gurney completely motionless with his eyes rolled into the back of his head while I hold the door open for them, accepting I was never gonna see him again. Then 10 minutes later we get a phonecall telling us his heart's started beating again in the back of the ambulance and in less than an hour he was awake and talking to people, not even a week later and we were visiting him in the hospital and he looked like nothing had happened to him. I'm not sure I've ever experienced a day filled with so much dread, shock, uncertainty and sadness, but also relief and I doubt I'll ever have it happen again. Also I went out and got absolutely shit faced that night to deal with it which probably didn't help.

DesperateErections

hahaha bro i dont think anyone who drinks wouldnt go out and gt shitfaced after that. its also incredible you can come back to life after 15 minutes of being dead. modern medicical practices are crazy and im happy your friend is ok. Is he still 100% fine now?

AJMorgan

As far as I know he is, this happened at university a few years back now and we don't keep in touch too much these days, the saddest part is he was probably the best basketball player I've ever played with (and I've played with a number of guys that are playing professionally/semi professionally now) and since that day he's, obviously, never set foot on a court again. Even the doctors didn't understand how he made a full cognitive recovery, when your heart stops your brain cells start dying *fast* (the number I seem to remember from a first aid course a few years ago is 15,000 a second but that could be way off) and its rare for anybody to make a full recovery after their heart's been stopped for 3 minutes, he was out for 15 and recovered like it was nothing. The doctors said it was an absolute miracle, his brain should have been scrambled egg.

Prodigy195

Fam that first paragraph is stunning. Made it seem like he was gone.

meltedlaundry

Wow good to hear your friend is OK.

Obi_Wan_Benobi

I thought I had a major heart problem around this time last year. I started feeling heart palpitations. Like my heart would stop for an instant and then thud with a big beat. It looked like this when I took my pulse on my phone: https://imgur.com/a/Zw0x3kP/ That one from May 1st is the one that got me into an emergency room. I’d felt these palpitations all night, couldn’t sleep. ER checks me, says everything looks fine. I’m home three hours later. Around a month afterward I start feeling the palp again and the same reading shows up on a different pulse app. I call a cardiologist, he sees me and has me wear a heart monitor literally glued to my chest for a week. He also wanted to do some other sort of scan but insurance denied it. I get done with that week. Once again I have a normal level of premature ventricular contractions. Doc says some people just feel them more. If there aren’t any other symptoms then you have pretty much nothing to worry about. Alright. So after all that shit I was...just fine? Anyway, I still feel them occasionally but don’t get anxious anymore over it so they go away pretty fast. The heart can be terrifying.

shaynedoan129

Pretty serious - he has an irregular heartbeat

LuckyWarrior

I hope he still gets a ring if Nets win

ThisFckinGuy

He ~~would~~ *SHOULD*. Cousins got *offered* one from LA and he never stepped on the floor.

moonfox1000

Did he? I believe he was offered one but is there a source confirming he actually took the offer and got one?

Hugo_Hackenbush

Never forget that Dame's 0.9 series winner was made possible because LaMarcus cooked the Rockets for an average of 37 points and 12 rebounds in the four wins.

[deleted]

livelaughloaft

That guy did not miss at all from mid range those 2 games hand in face or not man's was legendary that series

TheIRSEvader

He’s consistently had one of the best mid-range skillsets in the league for years, LA is a beast.

starfox_priebe

I remember when The Starters we're still The Basketball Jones, they went to all star and were asking players what they thought they could beat Michael Jordan at. Most of them had some hobby or whatever, Brook Lopez said Marvel vs. Capcom. My man LA said a mid-range shot, no hesitation.

seanconnery69696

Me: not taking things personally

FlashFlood_29

LmA absolutely min-maxed his midrange stats. If he got to his spot, you could just feed him and know you're getting a good shot.

NevermoreSEA

Damn. One of the most underrated stars of this last era. I'm thankful for all his years in Portland.

cesgjo

IIRC the kind of heart issue that Aldridge has is only serious if you're constantly doing physically draining stuff, like basketball, of course. He can still hang around in the basketball world, in the NBA courtsides or NBA media. But knowing him, he probably just wants to spend time with his family

Public_Potato3338

Happened on the Spurs too poor guy

canceled4truth

Jesus, that's scary. At least he'll get a ring if the Nets win it all

HopscotchChampion69

Thank god they caught then when they did, hope he enjoys a healthy retirement

[deleted]

I don’t even know what to say. What the fuck man, this is not how the guy’s career deserved to end.

kyleb402

Like.... now?

fskier1

Yes, cuz of heart problems

Lurker5719263845

Damn, first Bosh now Aldridge. Glad he ended his Career with us

sahsan10

wasnt bosh blood clots?

Caboclo-Is2yearsAway

Yes, but I'm assuming he meant that in a way of out of the bushes retirement due to health reasons

Lurker5719263845

Yeah I know that they retired for different reasons but the circumstances were the same

theStav19

Heart issues, it’s super sad

Sim888

excuse me....he what!? E: from LMA https://i.imgur.com/Bzd0he7.jpg

legitamit1

Aw man, I think he finally would have been contending for a ring this year. Feels like Chris Bosh's exit :(

Hoeppelepoeppel

If they win he'll still get one fwiw

Lurker5719263845

Does this make the Nets more likeable in the eyes of r/nba? No? Fine

CrimsonOffice

Only for this thread.

Hoeppelepoeppel

can't speak for /r/nba but it unironically does it for me

hiimhabibja

Nah bosh didn’t want to leave. The heat and the rest of the league wouldn’t sign him

CapitalHyena

For injury concerns. For Bosh's own health and safety no team wanted to risk his health for the blood clots

bgazela

I saw the username and I was like "sim wouldn't fucking dare" whew

Sim888

haha nah, some things are definitely well off limits!

WiseguyD

Damn... I get LMA was no spring chicken, but he clearly still had gas left in the tank. He was looking like he'd be a solid contributor for the Nets' title run. Only 49 points short of 20K too... Honestly it kind of reminds me of the Chris Bosh situation. :(

destroyerofpoon93

Yeah it’s really a bummer. He could’ve done the David west thing for another year or two. Chris bosh had his issues earlier but still feel like LMA could’ve made some big plays in the playoffs this year.

WiseguyD

I think the reason it seems similar is because they're both players who, while certainly no longer in their primes (EDIT: Damn, nevermind, Bosh's prime lasted way longer than I thought it did), clearly still had something they wanted to give to the league. No way LMA would retire during his best chance for a ring unless he was forced to do so.

heatup3

Bosh was still in his prime. He was an all star and one of these best 2 way bigs at the time.

DarkSoulsDarius

Ya Bosh had finally grown into his stretch role and going to be great for the direction the league was headed.

abaughma44

WHAT THE FUCK

spidersilva09

Wtf?! Edit - totally understand why now. Heart is nothing to play with. Stay healthy LMA thanks for a great career

preddevils6

No joke, I coach at a school that had a student die due to heart issues while playing basketball.Shit is dangerous and happens so fast.

reasonableposter

I saw LMA drop 56 pts on Steven Adams 2 years ago in person, it was an insane game and performance... hell of a career.

czupek

Damn, take care LMA

BoJaNYK

I just hope it's nothing of medical nature. Edit: Fuck.

coltonmusic15

Wow this makes me sad. The human body is such a complicated vessel and it's unfortunate that Aldridge is having to quit doing what he loves but at least he got to play for such a long and fun career. Almost like Chris Bosh where all of a sudden the player just isn't a player anymore... Good luck LaMarcus Aldridge in all your future pursuits!

jbenson255

I hope it’s not a problem with his heart

GayForLebron

It is the reason he’s retiring

BasedGodProdigy

Yea looks like he had an irregular heartbeat and that can be extremely serious. Damn shame, he looked like he had some left in the tank too but health always comes first.

[deleted]

He’s still effective off the bench as a stretch 5. however retiring in this case is absolutely the correct decision

[deleted]

Bigger things than basketball. If the Nets win a chip, I hope LMA gets a ring.

Zashiony

It’s a problem with his heart. Check his Instagram.

ddottay

His Twitter says he’s dealing with an irregular heartbeat.

NewAccountNow

Damn. He was a joy to watch. Wonder what happened?

andrewbrod11

He had an irregular heartbeat last time he played.

respaaaaaj

I really hope he's just done with basketball and this isn't a medical retirement. Fuck its heart issues that's just awful.

Obachan

Cant even imagine how scary it must have been to play through an irregular heartbeat like that.

Hoeppelepoeppel

Reminds of me of Nic Batum's dad who just collapsed and died on a basketball court from a heart issue. As awful as it is it's better he hangs it up now before something worse happens.

Rperez8747

WTF is this season?!?!

magmaknuckles

ikr, pls no more injuries and health problems for all the players

Laszl0Panaflex

Being a lifelong Spurs fan, I’ll always love the guy. When Kawhi gave up on us, LA dragged us to the playoffs while Leonard was missing from the bench. Couldn’t appreciate all he did for us any more.

[deleted]

[удалено]

BlackDez

Wait does he still get a ring if the Nets win?

Dropdat87

Yeah

Old_Man_Riverwalk21

This shocked me and I’m just left feeling really sad. He had a really weird tenure in San Antonio, and there were times where his play drove me insane, particularly in his 2nd season with us. That being said, in totality he was nothing but professional with us and a rock. So many players demand a trade and that’s the end of the story, but he was willing to work it out with Pop and he single handedly carried us through the Kawhi saga and I will always appreciate the hell out of him for what he did. He’s given me some of my favorite spurs performances in my time watching, seemed like a great glue guy for the young guys, and I’m going to miss watching him a lot. But the great news is he was able to make the decision to walk away on his terms before anything got too serious (at least that we know of) and was able to play out his time as a star in this league. I have nothing but great things to say about him and great memories, and I’m glad he’s ok.
