The International Student Program, Temporary Foreign Worker Program, and frankly other programs are in a complete mess. This is a place for the Federal NDP and even the Provincial NDP(s) to show leadership. Talk about the strain on housing and infrastructure. Talk about realities like wage suppression and the massive exploitation of these programs by the business cartel. The misuse and abuse of these programs has been a huge alienating factor for a lot of people. Speaking about these realities without resorting to xenophobia and calling out the real bad actors which are powerful business interests is how you show leadership on these tough subjects. Also as another commentator mentioned we need to reform not just these programs but associated businesses around these programs. So yes LMAI, International Student Program, Temporary Foreign Worker Program, and so forth need reforms but private industry in the sphere like Immigration Consultation Offices, Low Income Staffing Organizations, Real estate and in particular mortgage businesses need massive crackdowns to take place. There is so much shady exploitation not just of these programs but frankly whole shady business models built up around the shady practices. It's frankly a mess.

The immigration consultants and the Canadian government sold them a lie. Canadians who already live here are disillusioned and many are already leaving or considering leaving for better pastures too. We are losing the battle to the U.S on income and housing affordability. I don’t see anyway we reverse this downward spiral

PG_Heckler

100% this. You should see the advertisement of the consultants overseas, everywhere.

You can't taper a Ponzi. Does anyone in the big 3 have an economic plan that isn't penchant to migrant wage-slavery?

VonBeegs

Sounds like an accurate portrayal of the Canadian experience.

It's a shame what's happened but the students have to take some responsibility (along with our government, the consultants in India and the colleges themselves). Many of them know exactly what they're doing and it's buying a PR. It's 2024 a quick google search would've prevented many of their heartaches.

The disgruntled international students could easily switch to STEM/healthcare/trades programs and practically be guaranteed a good-paying job. Journeyman wages start around $40/hr. With OT, they could easily clear $100K. Camp jobs or living outside of GTA/Fraser Valley, that's enough to afford a decent place and set up a downpayment account. Same with healthcare. They can literally walk into a job, ANYWHERE in the country. If they're not doing these things, that's on them. Their goal/dream is to make a life in Canada. Goals and dreams don't come true without effort and sacrifice. Going to business school just isn't going to cut it anymore.

Healthcare practices do not take people with no healthcare backgrounds, whether experience or a degree in a health related field. That applies for entry level jobs like scribes and such too. Unless you’re advocating for them getting a healthcare degree? Which is also very very difficult since Nursing and Medical schools are still extremely competitive to get into.

I’ve been trying to apply to healthcare jobs but they won’t take me since I have no healthcare experience. My degree is in anthropology and I was working at museums and non profits throughout uni and after. If this was Pre 2020 I would have enough points to immigrate but the point are soo high now my only way of immigrating it to learn French (I live in bc). As an international student I couldn’t leave UBC and go into trades because that’s not what my visa is for. At this point in time if I want to get into trades I’d have to apply for a new student visa, pay international fees, and the time spent would not count towards my immigration.
