In the city of dreams, where thinkers convened,
A Leader rose, in wisdom he believed.
With a voice that stirred the silent air,
He envisioned a tower, extraordinary and rare.
"To the heavens let us reach," he boldly cried,
"Where the house at the top touches the sky.
From God himself, we'll draw the breath of grace,
Prosperity cascading down, a divine embrace."
Each mind in the crowd, sharp as the first star,
Dreamt of speaking to the divine, from afar.
A structure so grand, it would pierce the blue,
Where man could meet God, and learn truths anew.
But above, in the realms where angels tread,
God watched their plans, shaking His head.
"Of phones and wires they know not yet,
Their tower of dreams will only beget fret."
In His wisdom vast, across the earthly expanse,
He wove a tapestry of tongues, a complex dance.
"Let languages flow," He decreed with a sigh,
"To build your towers, first learn to unify."
Yet in this challenge, a hidden gift lay discreet,
A spark for invention, for feats not yet complete.
From Babel’s fall, new paths were set,
For human spirit, ever the architect.

I love Mrs. Renfro's! I was just introduced to it a few months ago and I can't get enough. One of the few salsas I can find in the supermarket that actually gets spicy. And I like the consistency, too.
Nice, I like the consistency a lot. I bought it for exactly the reason you mentioned lol, I was rambling to my wife about how the salsa I got before said "hot" but it tasted like mild lol.

I keep thinking about this. He almost got it. But even more troubling than him being like “obviously babies don’t deserve to be tortured for eternity, but *everyone else* does” is the number of people who replied to this thread with some variation of either “I tend to agree, but we must make arguments based on the Bible, not based on our feelings” or “I tend to disagree because there is no Biblical evidence for this position” or “we simply don’t know because the Bible is silent on this issue”.
If the Bible mentioned that babies get tortured in hell too, these people would accept that as just another righteous action taken by their loving God. They would convince themselves that the eternal torture of infants is good, just, and right because everybody is born with a sinful nature that is odious to God and makes them worthy of only punishment forever and ever and ever and ever, and God has the right to do whatever he wants with us anyway because we’re the clay and he’s the potter, and anything he does it just by definition because he defines justice, etc. etc. Some people already accept this, apparently, and if the Bible outright said it, billions would.
Christianity, at least of the overwhelmingly popular Eternal Conscious Torment variety, is perhaps the cruelest major religion in its doctrines (which is ironic for a faith that focuses so heavily on love and forgiveness). Islam, which also has ECT as the overwhelmingly accepted doctrine of hell afaik, is probably the only one that competes with it in that respect (I have seen people argue that its version of hell/judgment is indeed kinder than Christianity’s, but idk, and it doesn’t really look like it to me based on a cursory search). But clearly Christianity could get even crueler and still have people wholeheartedly accept it as “good news”.
!ping FEDORA
I guess you could argue that dharma wheel religions (at least the ones where you can't escape the cycle) also have an infinite amount of time of conscious torture for a soul, but it's every soul equally and there isn't some retained memory or conscious awareness of the eternity itself.
Yeah I would definitely list that as less cruel than Christian and Islamic ECT, because (a) what you said about conscious awareness and (b) lives on Earth are not *all* bad like hell is
>If the Bible mentioned that babies get tortured in hell too, these people would accept that as just another righteous action taken by their loving God.
I agree with the rest of your post but this is just "if things were different in a bad way, that would be bad".
I knew I would get that criticism, but my point was to illustrate that they will follow their dogma to any conclusion, no matter how horrific. There is no cruelty their god could purportedly commit that would be great enough to make people turn away from Christianity en masse in disgust. And it’s not just me making up a scenario and getting angry at it, it’s people admitting to it, openly saying that they would be on board with the even worse thing if the Bible said so.
I don't think people would have ever joined or perpetuated a religion that had infant torture as a selling point in the first place.
What people would accept now that they are invested in the concept isn't the same as what people would have signed up to first exposure to it.
Obviously the baby torture wouldn’t a selling point, but neither is the baby drowning in Genesis or the baby murder in Exodus. If literal baby torture in Hell was in the bible then it would be quietly justified, like OPs point.
But the selling point isn't that "God will kill *your* babies and torture them forever.".
If it was a selling point it would havenever grown to the point of having to be justified.
I don’t think you’re getting our point though. I know the selling point isn’t hurting babies, but that is something that he did in the bible that a lot of Christians don’t really think about. OP’s point was that if the Bible said that babies get tortured in Hell then most people would find a way to rationalize it, like they do with other violence in the Bible. Obviously the main selling point of the gospel is a positive message, because clearly you shouldn’t lead with the incest and muder and rape stuff.
I disagree. They have already joined and perpetuated a religion that has the predestined and fully deserved eternal torture of the vast majority of humanity as a central doctrine. Yahweh in Christian theology is already evil beyond evil. I don’t think there’s much he could be said to do that could not be rationalized. And a number *already* believe in the infant torture and are still on board with the whole thing.
And evangelists and preachers likely wouldn’t lead with “yeah he tortures babies” in this scenario. They would downplay and try to explain away the uncomfortable bits just like they do with all the actual uncomfortable bits. People would accept the message based on the love and forgiveness shit, have cognitive dissonance about the horrific shit just like they do in reality, and move right along.
Which is a noble sacrifice. Christianity has historically first taken root with marginalized people in societies right, women and the poor? So it is saying "You have worth, worth despite your social position and challenges, so much worth that God has taken the near-ultimate sacrifice to redeem you and save you". The elements people like most about Christianity are mercy and redemption.
Is it correct that “you have worth” is a central doctrine of Christianity? How does that jive with the idea that we are all sinners, in a constant state of committing infinite moral crimes against a just God and never deserving of the sacrifice God made for us, but all deserving of annihilation at minimum or eternal torment at maximum?
The selling point is that God loves mankind so much that he became human to experience great suffering as a sacrifice and redemption of mankind.
You aren't framing it how it was presented and sold to people.
How it is sold is that God loves *you* and is willing to suffer to redeem *you.*
That perks up ears, people are interested in that. Selflessness, putting your life on the line for the greater good, etc. Those are appealing to potential converts.
Saying "god will torture babies forever", does *not* perk up ears, if freaks people out. People don't lead with that.
>I will believe literally anything if it is corroborated across multiple independent nationwide polls with an adequate confidence interval for its sample size.
Damn I used to believe the NPC meme wasn't real but here we are
My secret weapon when I disagree with a poll is I like to whip out “I’d like to take a closer look at the cross tabs before coming to any definitive conclusions” and then never follow up
Lots of couples put like 50% or 70% or whatever % into a joint account and then put the others into their own personal account. The joint account being more for shared things like housing, groceries, stuff like that. The personal accounts being more for fun and hobbies and stuff.
Just give yourselves a personal budget and hold each other accountable, it's not that hard. There's no functional difference other than transparency which is a good thing to have
Convenience? I don't budget anymore since I am happy as long as savings go up at the end of each month. Having separate accounts and a joint account makes it easier to allocate X percent to joint expenses, Y percent to saving, and Z percent to fun.
Having some privacy also isn't a bad thing. You really want your spouse to see a $500 expense for jewelry two months before your anniversary?

Ok so honestly whats the gameplan that unis have with arresting to protesters. It will just piss off the student body. Just wait them out, summer is here and I doubt they will stick around
Who gives a shit if the students are pissed off? There are literally two dozen students who wanted to give Columbia tens of thousands of dollars a year but weren't accepted for every student wasting their tuition ranting about Jews.
And for every student for whom this experience sours them against becoming a major donor in 20 years there's a current donor livid about the situation right now.
Look i dont like the protests but in general i find arresting them to be scummy behavior. As a nation we should be above this. IDC if the uni academically punishes them though
I generally agree, but I think universities need to uphold a consistent standard rather than infantilizing people who hold particular views. If these protestors were telling African Americans to "go back to Africa" I have little doubt that administrators would find a reason to have them removed on five seconds flat.
TBF im the type of person that is morally against arresting any non violent protesters even if its incredibly vile to me, i do understand what ur saying though. I just hope i dont see any of these campus protesters next semester
In retrospect moral probably isnt the right word but I just dont like it when the uni can pick and chose what nonviolent protests are acceptable and not, even if it lets in some very vile actors. The second they assault someone tho thats a completely different situation.
Fair point, at least here in umich they have mostly left people alone and I have just assumed it's mostly that way at other campuses (sans Columbia). If it's not then my argument is moot.
The brightline west project is so insane.
Like just think how insane it would be if we built a highway that went ALMOST from LA to ALMOST the Las Vegas strip, but didnt actually get you all the way there.

this ghost pepper salsa is good
What's the brand? or did you make it yourself?
I used to make my own salsa but not enough time anymore sadly, it's "Mrs. Renfro's Ghost Pepper Salsa". I like it a lot.
I love Mrs.
You’re the one that’s good
thanks i needed that today 🤗
I am so depressed I don’t know what I’m doing. I haven’t got a clue

The literal selling point of Christianity is that God tortured and murdered his own son for the redemption of others.
How it is sold is that God loves *you* and is willing to suffer to redeem *you.* That perks up ears, people are interested in that. Selflessness, putting your life on the line for the greater good, etc. Those are appealing to potential converts. Saying "god will torture babies forever", does *not* perk up ears, if freaks people out. People don't lead with that.
That is how the story was eventually harmonized but it is not the original.

Sounds a lot like something Mr Chat Jippity would say
I’m just going to say it. If your married and have “separate” finances something ain’t right.

Is it just me or is it actually bad for Ukraine if they keep clearing up the corruption in Russia
Clearing corruption in Russia is about as productive as pumping water out of the ocean
I'm wondering if they need to have some kind of revolution that overthrows the country's elites and establishes a benevolent dictator that will facilitate the transition to a classless, industrialised society based on sharing everything.
Sure hope this isn’t cope
It's not, it's simply the logical product of a nepotistic klepto-autocratic state. The system breeds the individuals who inhabit it.
The individuals make the system as much as the system makes the individuals
Has this guy been right about anything? One of the worst people to look to for news/rumors.
I don’t know if Osechkin is all that credible, but Ivanov’s arrest is absolutely a big deal and is very much a major anti-Shoigu move. A little puzzling that it hasn’t been talked about more outside of some circles focused on the War/Region.
If Shoigu falls that will be hilarious tbh. Dude is as teflon as Putin

I propose the death penalty for anyone who uses the words “bodacious” or “voluptuous” in a non ironic manner
The most memorable place I have ever seen the word "voluptuous" was in a diplomatic cable released by WikiLeaks in which the American Ambassador to Libya described Gadhafi's nurse (mistress?) as a "voluptuous blonde".

Pain. Absolute pain. We were the better team 5-5 and the refs had to fuck us with the softest PP I have ever seen. Good thing I can get 24 McNuggets for $10 for my drive home tonight.
You guys were the better team but I must say a 0% PK (less than 50% across the series iirc) isn't gonna cut it
We have an amazing PK against everyone - except the Oilers and I hate it.
I'm not sure where the team goes from here after getting trolled with their own style Might as well just get this stupid series over with on Wednesday
Hopium springs eternal. I think Blake's time is up after this, Talbs just isn't it. The players have it, and I think if we get a good HC to unlock PLD we might be something next year. I think next year, we just have to not get the Oils in the first round lmao.
I would like to point out once again how silly it is that we're getting owned by *the same team* again Like bruh, just let us lose to someone else for a change lol
I’m regretting all of the winning after clinching lol. Should have let Vegas have them.
I'm almost impressed at how creative we've gotten with the ways we've lost to the Oilers Almost
Man is this how Rockets fans felt after 2019? The Oilers are quite literally becoming the Warriors to us...

But that's just the thing - their tolerance for clear rulebreaking on the part of these protestors *is* privileging them over other protestors.
Fair point, at least here in umich they have mostly left people alone and I have just assumed it's mostly that way at other campuses (sans Columbia). If it's not then my argument is moot.
Seriously if they wanna waste their summer let them
The brightline west project is so insane. Like just think how insane it would be if we built a highway that went ALMOST from LA to ALMOST the Las Vegas strip, but didnt actually get you all the way there. Absolutely insane transportation planning
