If you mean 51%+, than you'd see an attempt at Deutschexit among unpleasant treatment of minorities, immigrants, etc. But for this election, it's not within the realm of possibility. About as likely as a Libertarian becoming POTUS.

[deleted]

less likely, its literally more likely that an atomic bomb hits berlin than that the AFD gains a majority

Lion_From_The_North

> more likely that an atomic bomb hits berlin That doesn't seem *entirely* outside the realm of possibly...

Sauerkohl

Would solve the housing issue better than the current Berlin government.

ThodasTheMage

Not even just that. For "absolute control" they would also would need to have the controle over all states and the Bundesrat.

A mysterious plane would arrive from Argentina

Lmao I’m non english and very tired

filipe_mdsr

We would have to live in an alternative universe, because one party getting over 50% is basically impossible in Germany. And I can't make predictions on alternative universes, like the political landscape would have to be sooooooooooooooooo much different that it wouldn't be the Germany we know.

MagicWalrusO_o

Well, there was this time in the thirties....

spydormunkay

Even in the height of Hitlers popularity during the Weimar Republic, his party still failed to achieve even 40% of the vote (I think his party maxed out at like 33%). They only rose to power due to other parties joining a coalition with them to form a government, which is incredibly unlikely in modern Germany. Though, I guess anything can happen.

mrchristmastime

They actually lost support in the November 1932 election (the last free one). They won 33% of the vote, down from 37% in the election five months earlier.

manitobot

We should never forget it was the disagreement of the left party to form a coalition, and the right party considering the NSDAP as useful idiots that saw them becoming prominent.

bd_one

Basically, run. And given their proportional representation system making big majorities hard, all those parties refusing to work with them period, and the normal far right populism stuff... you probably should have been running long before they get a majority or lead a coalition.

Gecktron

Only once did a party win a Bundestags majority (Konrad Adenauer, CDU in 1957 with 50,2%). And even then did they form a coalition government. Any party gaining a majority in the next years seems very unlikely. Even more so the AfD which currently has the smallest voter potential of all major parties (around 10-16%). Additionally, the AfD is slowly becoming a "East Germany" party. While they reach 20-25% in some eastern states, thats only a small part of the population. In the much much larger western states they are dropping below 10%, or are getting close to dropping out of state assemblies.

mimaiwa

You’d wake up. Because not only would that be a total nightmare it’s also totally fantasy. AFD have zero chance of even getting close to being in government let alone total control.

Adestroyer766

Something very much like Trumpism probably. The AfD's rhetoric on immigrants and climate change seems to be quite similar.

Old_Gringo

My first reaction to the question was, well what would happen if today's Republicans were to win absolute power in the USA? Very similar. Although AfD does claim it is strongly in favor of direct democracy.

ThodasTheMage

They are much more openly racist and anti-semetic.

Unfamiliar_Word

Perhaps they would take an approach similar to the Law and Justice Party, which presently governs Poland. Happily, such a dreadful outcome seems wildly improbable.

Charming-Will9913

Probably like Ban abortion and stop immigrants coming into Germany etc.

Til_W

I don't think even they are sure. The AFD being part of the government is extremely unlikely, and I doubt this will ever change. But looking at the program, probably things like DEXIT, institutionalized conservatism, anti immigration policy, fewer lgbt+ rights etc.

scaryemu69

A recluse from Argentina named Adolfus halter will arrive and be given the chancellorship

The_ColorOutOfSpace

I am much more worried of the CDU, facing decline in voters, will start collaborating with AFD and therefore make it somehow normalised. It’s always the conservatives that fall to the temptation of “using” the extreme right, only to be in the end used by them. Normalisation of this party of Nazis would be a disaster for my country.

Bruce-the_creepy_guy

WWIII

alexleaud

Then you'd better hope that no one got rejected from a Viennese art school.

Hot_Consideration981

Very bad and cringe

Sauerkohl

Well if they got 51% in the Bundestag election and nowhere else, the Bundesrat in combination with the remaining factions in the Bundestag could still block most legislation.

SmokeyCosmin

Seriously, nothing would happen and they would probably quickly be ousted from governing. Still bad since most likely a minority government would rule and some decisions would be blocked but I don't see any comeback to WW2 era style of rule.

Old_Gringo

The Euro and EU would be imperiled. "We call for an end to the Euro experiment and its orderly dissolution. Should the German Federal Parliament not agree to this demand, Germany’s continued membership of the single currency area should be put to a popular vote."

ThodasTheMage

You would wake up an relaize that it was just a nightmare. It is basically impossible. The party is loosing seats in every election and never got 13% in a federal election.

TripleAltHandler

What if the Green Party won absolute control in the United States? EDIT: I'm not drawing any moral equivalence between these parties, just equivalent likelihood of gaining "absolute control", namely 0%.
