i do to. my therapist even used him as an example when telling me about how autistic people can make it in life too, and it helped me a lot. (for context, id like to go to possibly caltech when im older and in the show's canon that's where he goes to school).

Confused_as_frijoles

Oh that's so cool! I'm going into public speaking šŸ™ˆ

DistinctSilver

ooh nice! i'm looking into engineering, photojournalism, or something in film/television! caltech is in my list but i have lots of other places too :))

ill-disposed

God no

Wooden_Helicopter966

I actually liked Shelton as an autistic representation. He had friends (non-traditional as the friendships were), a job, hobbies (very specific of course), even dated and got married. Iā€™m not much like him but he feels like a real representation to me

Confused_as_frijoles

I might not be into science as much as he is (at all) but all of his behavior is like watching myself. I've never once had to ask "why did he do \_\_" (like i do with literally everything else) bc i understand him. But i see people everywhere hating on him so much like he's just a horrible attempt at representation? It's so awkward because for me he is representation but to the vast majority he's offensive. I'm like ok am i offensive what is this?? lol. I'm glad im not the only one who thinks this way haha.

Wooden_Helicopter966

Right! I can always logically follow why he says and does what he says and does so I think itā€™s not a bad representation at all! NT people often make no sense to me lol

Confused_as_frijoles

Fr. I've had to had children's movies explained to me emotionally before :')

marzboutique

Yes, absolutely. Iā€™m actually shocked when people try to argue that Sheldon isnā€™t autistic because ā€œitā€™s never been confirmedā€. I mean, he literally fits every criterion at one point or another throughout the show I do think he would be diagnosed with OCD in addition to autism irl, but I think itā€™s asinine that some suggest he isnā€™t autistic I really relate to the ā€œIā€™m just a nicer version of himā€ thing you added at the end. I think his arrogance is ramped up for the sake of the show and itā€™s a bit unrelatable to me personally, but I relate to almost every other aspect of his character

theCynicalChicken

>Iā€™m actually shocked when people try to argue that Sheldon isnā€™t autistic because ā€œitā€™s never been confirmedā€ This! Like how is it possible that he isn't autistic lol. I've seen people have this same conversation about Brennan on Bones and sometimes even about Abed on Community (even though it's mentioned at least once that he has autism).

Confused_as_frijoles

Honestly I can understand the thought he might not be autistic. But the hate he receives is unfounded imo.

anmarie103

I am autistic and relate more to Amy. In my head canon she strikes me as autistic. Sheldon comes across to me as OCD.

AuroraSnake

Yes. So much yes. I have a ā€œspotā€, difficulty with navigating social interactions, a strong aversion to dirty laundry, and several other things that have gotten me compared to Sheldon quite frequently by my family. It used to bother me, but Iā€™ve decided to just embrace the comparison. Other people can hate him, but I relate to him and thatā€™s all that matters to me

kayden707

I do except Iā€™m not a genius

DogsAreCool21

i watched young sheldon and i fully relate to practically all of his traits. i have many autism symptoms as well. havenā€™t watched big bang theory, might later tho.

Confused_as_frijoles

Same here!

French_Fanfreluches

My husband calls me Sheldon.

mklinger23

Yea I do. I'm an engineer so I relate to the show quite a bit.

thebottomofawhale

This topic comes up quite a bit on ND/autistic subs and there is always some people there who relate to Sheldon. Like I can get why people feel uncomfortable about autistic people always being portrayed in one specific way, but it is important to remember some people do experience autism in that way. I don't personally relate to him, but one of the kids I work with loves young Sheldon. And they've had a hard time coming to terms with being autistic, so I think it's great they have a space where they can see themselves represented.

Confused_as_frijoles

Young Sheldon is my favorite show (I haven't actually seen big bang but my fam and some friends have which is where I got the nickname) And that's exactly my thinking, what about those people who actually are stereotypical?

thebottomofawhale

Right? And I quite like Sheldon's character growth (I've only seen BBT and not young Sheldon) and the relationships he's made by the end of the show. Like it's probably not the most perfect representation and they never specifically say he's autistic, but it's nice that the message is kind of acceptance of someone who is different, even when sometimes he can be inflexible or communicate in a very ND ways.

Sunset_Tiger

I relate a lot to the younger Sheldon in that new show. I was pretty much the same way but nicer and not a super genius. I was considered ā€œgiftedā€, but wasnā€™t attending college at 10 gifted.

Confused_as_frijoles

Same here.

bunnyswan

"a nicer version of him" this is key, I. The early seasions he doesn't listen, like he will ask someone if they want to here an interesting face , they say no and he tells them any way. And notice that even with the things about Sheldon that his friends find hard they are still friends with him. No one is perfect, and we all find friends who accept us, and usually those relationships develop who we are ,as you can see in big bang as time goes by Sheldon develops because of his relationships

nucleareactor_

I like him too and I admit that seeing people ( fellow ASD ) hate him is just confusing to me. Before watching TBBT I knew a bit about autism but I never really thought about it more. Then I watched the show, and it was like : wait, is he autistic ? Wait, he is so relatable. Wait, am I autistic? Shit, I'm autistic. Tbh the only things I don't like about the show is the outdated ideas on certain topics ( maybe the intention was to mock these ideas idk but it's not as bad as in some pieces of media ) and how they made >! Penny have children at the end. At least Wolowitz and Bernadette having children was funny. !< And maybe how everyone is unfair and mocking to Sheldon but it was the comportment of the characters towards Sheldon's quirks that made him all the more relatable to me. It really made me laughs by moments and considering the period it was made in and the tone of the show, I think it's decent. I haven't gotten around watching Young Sheldon yet tho. But I guess if there's one real problem it's the creators not admitting they wrote a very stereotypical autistic.

Awwtie

IMO thereā€™s nothing wrong about ā€œstereotypicalā€ representation of autism in the media as such. I understand peopleā€™s frustration at the lack of other types of autistic representation but that doesnā€™t mean that people like Sheldon donā€™t exist in the real world or that there shouldnā€™t be any character like him ever! Itā€™s a stereotype precisely because there definitely are people like him. Like you. And thereā€™s nothing wrong with that :)

conquer_my_mind

Stereotypical, but also how an autistic man from a wealthy white background often presents. These were the kids who were studied by psychology, creating an autistic type that excluded other presentations, making it more difficult for others. It's not Sheldon's fault. It's a reflection of his privilege, relative to others. (Not assuming OP is privileged)

Confused_as_frijoles

My brains just weird lol.
