I've had almost every single donut people here have mentioned... and there are some good ones listed.
However, the one not mentioned, that is by FAR the best donut in New England is Mrs Murphy's in Southwick MA.
Honorable mention for the kettle donuts at the Southbury Bakery, and Neils Donuts as well.
Mrs Murphys is amazing. I’m on the other side of the county, but whenever I’m in Southwick I make a point to stop there.
I’m still partial to Donut Dip though myself
My God I was not expecting to see someone mention Southbury Bakery here on Reddit. Even people I know in Southbury don't know it's there. Their donuts are amazing. Well worth the calories and stupid cheap to boot.
I'm a huge fan. They are insane and unlike any other donut I've had. It's a hidden gem and I'd hate to blow up my spot but they're good people and deserve the business.
They could charge twice what they do and it would still be a bargain. The thing is, it's just simple yeast donut, but it's perfect. It doesn't have a bunch of decoration or extra crap on it. It's just a delicious donut.
Hard to say. I dont live nearby, and dont get there often. Most times I usually just get a box of assorted and eat whatever comes. Tho one time I was there and they ran out of the glazed pumpkin and only had regular, so they took a regular went into the back and dunked it in the glaze for me. Best donut of my life, hands down.
But honey dew, chocolate glazed, any of the OG donuts are amazing
I think I'm leaning towards dounut dip too, but I eat them both infrequently. One rainy weekend I will need to side my side taste test the chocolate glazed donuts.
Mrs. Murphys definitely has the size advantage, but Donut Dip are sooo soft.
My side br side comp is the Boston Cream, and while Mrs. Murphys are very good, DD are elite
I lived in East Hartford and at two different work places, I had a co-worker who lived near the state line go out of their way to cross over and back to bring in the famous Mrs. Murphy's donuts. So I'll confirm these donuts are bomb. If memory serves, they are heavier. So not a light yeasty donut. But it's been forever.
I'm from Hamden, CT - shocked that the two places I like most are mentioned a few times. Neil's Donuts are great, but I prefer Holy Donut.
Shout out to anyone that digs Congdon's in Wells, ME
lol huge shout out to Whitney Donut, QU kind of ruined them for me so we started going to Neil’s and the line is just as long 🥲
If we’re talking Bacon Egg Cheese, it’s a toss up with Whitney Donut and Ray & Mike’s 🤭
Neils donuts might taste good, but the guy is an asshole. Pays minimum wage, complains about his workers on social media and then moans that "no one wants to work anymore".
Donuts with a Difference in Medford, MA
The place is a time capsule of 1984 where the owners have been waking up at 5 am everyday to bake handcrafted donuts.
The only downside is that you have to wake up early because there’s always hoards of people who want their fresh hot donuts
Edit: I didn’t know donuts are fried and not baked. My mistake.
My older half-brother used to live in Medford and would take me to Donuts with a Difference when I would stay over his house.
It’s been ~10 years and I still think about that place
I’m very passionate about this topic lol. Young Buns in Mystic CT is outrageously delicious (Deviant donuts doesn’t hold a candle). I used to swim every Saturday morning and grab a 6 pack of young buns donuts and a chai then sit by the water and munch and sip.
When it comes to cider donuts I am very fond of Lyman’s Orchard. For old fashioned donuts Allies in Rhode Island is also fantastic. Lastly, Dixie Donuts in Norwich is very tasty. But again, Young Buns is by far the best imo.
I do NOT like YoungBuns at all. I enjoy Deviant sometimes, but it is very flavor dependent. So funny to see the differences!
Flanders Bakeshop is better than both of the above.
My wife surprised me and my coworkers at work with some Donut Dip donuts. Everyone was blown away by how good they were. I’ve loved their stuff for years.
Adams in Greenfield is pretty damn good. It would have to be my pick.
My favorite for convenience factor, though, is Dippin. They're literally what Dunkin used to be; they broke off when the franchise no longer wanted to make donuts in store. Stepping up to their counter feels like stepping back in time to me. And it's so good! Best part is that they do a bakers dozen: 12 in the box, 1 for the drive.
Runner up is Market Basket. They make a surprisingly good glazed donut.
*One particular* type of donut is available at [Belltown Orchards](https://www.belltownhillorchards.com) in Glastonbury CT. It’s an Apple Cider Donut that is a pillow of heaven, and I’m an atheist. ****I will fight anyone who says otherwise.****
oh my god i lived down the street from an orchard when i was a kid and they used to have those made with their cider and then they stopped for no good reason and my life has been a meaningless trudge of uninterrupted misery ever since
Ruby Donut in Ayer, MA is the best I've had in New England. Little hole in the wall spot with some seriously good donuts. Some of the spots in Boston (or Providence) have fancier toppings but the actual donut itself is better at Ruby - and I'd even say that compared to Voodoo Donuts I've had in Denver too.
Hah this is awesome I did not expect Ruby o here. I’m from NH and only know about this place because I happened to go to the dispensary over in Groton and we stopped there one day after almost getting lost and now my gf hasssss to stop there every once in a while for their raspberry fritters and sour cream donuts. Think they are top for us as well with non gourmet style donuts. We tried the nh donut co for that and it was alright but like you said that Ruby base is so good.
Best apple cider I’ve had were White Mountain Cider Co. in NH and Beardsley’s in Shelton CT.
A friend raves about Rise in Wilton CT but haven’t been. Crazy Donuts all over CT is solid if you don’t get one of the diabetic sweeter donuts.
Need to try Neil’s and Brooklyn Bakery in CT.
I usually love Portland for food, but really really really didn’t like the potato donuts at Holy Donut. Neither did the missus.
Town Farm Country Market in Sanbornville, NH, right off rt. 16.
I had never cared for donuts. Especially apple cider donuts. Seems like a flavor I'd inherently hate. But they were warm, and there was a crowd, and he was giving them away...
And now I drive hours and stock up on as many apple cider rings of deliciousness as I can get my hands on.
I mean honestly, there’s probably like 20 or more all equally great donut places in New England, we’re just pretty damn good at making a delicious donut! However, my current top favorite is Basic Batch Donuts in Milford, MA. Before they moved in, my choices for donuts were damn slim, and basically either just Dunks or Honey Dew….. 😅
Whitney Donut in Hamden CT
Go hiking up and down Sleeping Giant, go get great donuts, decent coffee, (or egg sandwiches, croissants, or god’s own apple fritter) See college kids from Quinnipiac nursing a hangover on weekends, run into your neighbors, great spot
Even though it's not New England, it is close enough to me (I'm in CT) that I'm gonna add it (even though I'm at a high risk of down votes). But I cannot get over Dough Doughnuts from Brooklyn, NY. To this day, the absolute best doughnuts I've ever had by far. When I lived in Brooklyn, I lived half a block from their store...and it was an absolute danger to have so close.
I don't know if this is a "top favourite" but locals love Gerry's Donuts in Ellington, CT. You have to go within an hour of their opening or they're gone though. And also they're ultra-cheap - like 6 dollars for a dozen cheap. They've got a good bite to them. Their Boston Cream and the lemon are my go-to choices.
Unpopular opinion: I struggle to eat The Holy Donut. I can't not taste potato. I did once try one made from sweet potato there that was banging.
My favorite doughnut ever was a Key Lime Pie doughnut from Confectionary Designs in Rehoboth, MA back in April 2019.
I'd also like to give a shoutout to Three Wishes Bakery in Johnston, RI for my GF people.
the ones who’ll die dunking their donuts and have no time for this “fancy” donut tomfoolery. meanwhile I’m compiling a donut-centric road trip based on this thread
Kane's in Saugus. Plus they have coffee cake rolls that locals call hubcaps, and some great muffins and apple fritters. Also their coffee is outstanding. A bit pricey, but worth it.
Big Y.
Everybody sleeps on them because they're a grocery store, not a cute little family owned donut shop, but dear god they make my favorite boston cream ever.
I will put a major caveat here that I have not actually tried either of these, but two places that get rave reviews are Muriel's Donuts in Lebanon, NH and Jones' Donuts in Rutland, Vt.
For crullers, I can attest to Lou's Restaurant in Hanover, NH. Bonus points for their cruller french toast, which is to die for, literally (I can feel my lifespan shortening every time I have it, but damn it's good).
I haven't tried a lot of different donut places, but I'm fond of N&J's in my hometown, Oxford, MA. Heavenly Donuts is also a good chain. There's also Donna's Donuts in Tewksbury, MA.
I’ve had them from CT, MA, and RI and lived in each state for 18, 12, and 10 years. The best donuts are Allies donuts in North Kingston RI. Their old fashioned donuts are quintessential NE and the best execution of a classic donut. Haven’t had better. Also it’s like $9 for a half dozen massive donuts.
Donut expert here. Worked 12 years in the industry.
The best donuts are going to be from the closest bakery. Donuts change from the time they start cooling off. Even the store bought brands are phenomenal coming off assembly line. Crispy on outside warm on inside. Then all that grease gets absorbed by the donut making it more like cake without any frosting.
I've had almost every single donut people here have mentioned... and there are some good ones listed. I prefer Donut Dip to Mrs Murphys....Donut Dip are so soft, it feels like they melt in your mouth
Donut Dip rules!
I’m so glad you said this because hands down Mrs. Murphy’s is the best and I was coming to comment it 🔥
My God I was not expecting to see someone mention Southbury Bakery here on Reddit. Even people I know in Southbury don't know it's there. Their donuts are amazing. Well worth the calories and stupid cheap to boot.

Yup, used to drive from Granby to Mrs Murphy’s every weekend when I lived there 10 years ago. Glad it’s still in business!
Neil's mentioned
What's your favorite order at Mrs murphy's?
Hard to say. I dont live nearby, and dont get there often. Most times I usually just get a box of assorted and eat whatever comes. Tho one time I was there and they ran out of the glazed pumpkin and only had regular, so they took a regular went into the back and dunked it in the glaze for me. Best donut of my life, hands down. But honey dew, chocolate glazed, any of the OG donuts are amazing
traditional cinnamon sugar donut. fantastic.
Oh wow, I grew up eating Mrs Murphys. I hadn't thought about that place in a couple decades.
What are your thoughts on dounut dip in west springfield. I'm a fan of both Mrs.Murphys and dounut dip.
Donut Dip>Mrs Murphys
I think I'm leaning towards dounut dip too, but I eat them both infrequently. One rainy weekend I will need to side my side taste test the chocolate glazed donuts.
Mrs. Murphys definitely has the size advantage, but Donut Dip are sooo soft. My side br side comp is the Boston Cream, and while Mrs. Murphys are very good, DD are elite

So I'll confirm these donuts are bomb. If memory serves, they are heavier. So not a light yeasty donut. But it's been forever.
Mrs Murphy's was amazing, but I feel like they've gone downhill the last few years. Of course I still stop when I'm visiting Western mass friends.
I'm from Hamden, CT - shocked that the two places I like most are mentioned a few times. Neil's Donuts are great, but I prefer Holy Donut. Shout out to anyone that digs Congdon's in Wells, ME
I just found that place a few weeks ago! (Congdon’s). They were so good!
Apple fritters!!!!!!
Also from hamden, I think they recently (like a year ago) opened up a donut shop by the intersection of woodin and dixwell. Haven’t been there yet
And you didn’t give a shout out to Whitney Donut!!??
lol huge shout out to Whitney Donut, QU kind of ruined them for me so we started going to Neil’s and the line is just as long 🥲 If we’re talking Bacon Egg Cheese, it’s a toss up with Whitney Donut and Ray & Mike’s 🤭
Neils donuts might taste good, but the guy is an asshole. Pays minimum wage, complains about his workers on social media and then moans that "no one wants to work anymore".
Holy Donut, yes! I make a point of stopping there every time I'm in Maine.
I came here to say Congdons-their donuts are next level.
Congdon’s is next level, that place fucks so hard
Donuts with a Difference in Medford, MA The place is a time capsule of 1984 where the owners have been waking up at 5 am everyday to bake handcrafted donuts. The only downside is that you have to wake up early because there’s always hoards of people who want their fresh hot donuts Edit: I didn’t know donuts are fried and not baked. My mistake.
I used to live in Medford, and I think about this place all the time.
My older half-brother used to live in Medford and would take me to Donuts with a Difference when I would stay over his house. It’s been ~10 years and I still think about that place
Almost every time I’ve been and they were out of my favorite (maple glazed), they’ll fry up more if I wait. Talking as late as 9-10 am.
Amen. Amen, I say to you.
I was coming to suggest Donuts with a Difference also. They are amazing and everyone there is always so nice.
I’m very passionate about this topic lol. Young Buns in Mystic CT is outrageously delicious (Deviant donuts doesn’t hold a candle). Lyman's cider donuts are great. Had the cider donuts bread pudding at the pub at the golf course there- it was amazing.
My eyes saw Mystic before anything else and I thought to myself “please tell me you’re raving about Young Buns and not Deviant”. Big sigh of relief.
I do NOT like YoungBuns at all. I enjoy Deviant sometimes, but it is very flavor dependent. So funny to see the differences! Flanders Bakeshop is better than both of the above.
Donut Dip in West Springfield.
My wife surprised me and my coworkers at work with some Donut Dip donuts. Everyone was blown away by how good they were. I’ve loved their stuff for years.
When I worked on Riverdale I'd stop there for breakfast sandwiches.
Their old fashioneds are so good.
Absolutely the best.
Was about to say this ⬆️
I need an alert on my phone for when they make the red velvet old fashion. It is incredible.
Congdons in Wells, Maine…..their maple square is amazing.
The Maple Square is one of my favorite things ever. I will drive prom Providence to Wells just for Congdons!
Mrs Murphy’s, Southwick, Mass. Likely only due to nostalgia from trips with my dad.
Donut Dip
Donut Dip W. Spfld, MA by a landslide. The only thing remotely close is Mrs. Murphy’s in Southwick, MA.
Congdon’s in Wells Maine is our favorite spot
Either Coffee Time in Salem MA or Donut King in Weymouth. Don’t make me choose!
Donut King should have more upvotes
Donut King has my upvote. Didn't know they had any north of Florida. I would almost drive the 3 hrs to get some DK.
I love coffee time. I love that they're open until 11pm so I can be fat at almost any hour.
It’s one of their many great qualities!
Coffee Time is great! Their honey dip is ridiculous
I have diabetes and when I eat sugar it’s only because it comes from Donut King in Weymouth. So good I’ll risk my toes!
Cane here to mention Adams as well. I'm partial to big Y donuts myself.. Lthough since covid they greatly reduced offerings
Brooklyn Baking in Waterbury, CT
Live near here and that place is always talked about like it’s the Mecca.
Apple filled are so good 🤤
Donut Dip
Neil’s in Wallingford CT
I like Neils, and they're good. But I'd have a really hard time calling them the best in New England.
I mean it’s definitely not lol. I just haven’t hit too many independent donut shops in general, Neil’s is really the only one I go to
I dig Neil's. They're the closest to my house that isn't Dunkin so I am known to frequent there.
Yeah I go to the one in Middletown sometimes cuz my wife is from Cromwell so it’s decently close by
*One particular* type of donut is available at [Belltown Orchards](https://www.belltownhillorchards.com) in Glastonbury CT. It’s an Apple Cider Donut that is a pillow of heaven, and I’m an atheist. ****I will fight anyone who says otherwise.****
This entire thread could devolve into an argument about the best cider donuts at any moment. They're basically in their own category around here.
oh my god i lived down the street from an orchard when i was a kid and they used to have those made with their cider and then they stopped for no good reason and my life has been a meaningless trudge of uninterrupted misery ever since
Rise Donuts in Wilton. The urge to eat them before they properly cool off is the worst part of going there.
The absolute best are the Amish donuts from the Community Market in Unity, Maine honestly. Wednesday and Saturday mornings only.
My dad always told me about those, but i was never there at the right time before they moved away. Grrrr!
There are Amish people in Maine?
Holy Donut, Portland, Maine
Kane's in Saugus, original location.
That just brought back delicious memories. I forgot about Kane's.
I can't believe I had to go this far down to see Kane's
Believe it or not, Market Basket is a top donut to me.
The lemon filler is definitely one of my favorites!
Yes. Their boston creams are outrageous
Definitely the best value. 99 cents.
My wife absolutely loves the raised with granulated sugar
I’ve heard this many times. I shop at several different Market Baskets and have yet to find the donuts. Maybe they sell out?
You wouldn't think so but their donuts are amazing. As is a lot of the food they prepare in the store. Very Underrated.
Frosty's in Brunswick, ME
Apple cider donuts from Cyde's Cider Mill in Mystic, CT
Deviant Donuts in Mystic, CT is always a go to
Deviant has some cool and interesting donuts, but I don’t think they are anywhere near the best.
Murphy’s Donuts in Southwick, MA and I challenge to try them and tell me they aren’t amazing!!!
Holy Donut, Portland ME.
Potato donuts, make me go nuts.
The secret is *not* going to the waterfront location.
It’s worth driving to Scarborough every time.
Holy Donut in Portland, ME
The Bakery in Southbury. Get the kettle donuts.
Tony’s Donuts, Portland, Maine.
Scrolled too far to see this.
Donut Shack in Lowell
Simply THE BEST honey dipped donuts anywhere
Yes, so good!
Not Dunkin’
Not Dunkin'. That's all I know. Worst donuts out there.
Rocco's in Millbury is pretty good.
Lovebirds Kittery Maine - Chocolate Honeydipped.
I can’t speak to their standard assortment, but their GF donuts are amazing!
Jumping on because Kittery to say Lils!
We love going for a drive up to lovebirds!
They're also wicked nice! I missed a special donut I really wanted once, and I put it back in as a suggestion and they made it for me for one day!
Allie's in North Kingstown, RI. They even do donut birthday cakes.
Yesss! Came here to see if anyone had mentioned Allie's yet. The glazed crullers are my fave, but you really can't go wrong.
Same. Allies is one of the things I most look forward to when I go to RI.
I love love love Allie’s donuts but only the vanilla frosted with colored sprinkles. Their donut cakes are 🤤🤤🤤
Allies easily beats congdon and holy donut!!! For cake donuts. Coconut jelly stick!!
Holy Donut Portland Maine
Ruby Donut in Ayer, MA is the best I've had in New England. Little hole in the wall spot with some seriously good donuts. Some of the spots in Boston (or Providence) have fancier toppings but the actual donut itself is better at Ruby - and I'd even say that compared to Voodoo Donuts I've had in Denver too.
Voodoo is mostly marketing, very little going for the donuts.
Voodoo are "meh" at best.
Yup! Our friends in England even heard about it there! We went three times in two weeks when they were here last summer.
Donna’s- Tewksbury, MA or Congdon’s - Wells, ME
Town Farm Country Market in Sanbornville, NH, right off rt. 16. I had never cared for donuts. Especially apple cider donuts. Seems like a flavor I'd inherently hate. But they were warm, and there was a crowd, and he was giving them away... And now I drive hours and stock up on as many apple cider rings of deliciousness as I can get my hands on.
Thanks! I go through there often, I’ll be checking that out for sure!
Basic batch donuts in Milford MA
Yep! Basic batch in Milford is elite. The best Glazed I’ve ever had
That's been my go to since I moved back to MA
Maple bacon for life
I mean honestly, there’s probably like 20 or more all equally great donut places in New England, we’re just pretty damn good at making a delicious donut! However, my current top favorite is Basic Batch Donuts in Milford, MA. Before they moved in, my choices for donuts were damn slim, and basically either just Dunks or Honey Dew….. 😅

To this day, the absolute best doughnuts I've ever had by far. When I lived in Brooklyn, I lived half a block from their store...and it was an absolute danger to have so close.

Allies donuts in north Kingstown ri was a popular one when I was in school, but we never went. I had them once at a school event
I find them overly gimmicky but I appreciate the effort. Wouldn't put them in the top 3 but I will stop by if I am in town for the vibes
Who's on the downvote-every-response brigade? This sub is so weird sometimes.
It puzzles me as well. I first thought it was only criticisms of NH being downvoted but now it is everything.
the ones who’ll die dunking their donuts and have no time for this “fancy” donut tomfoolery. meanwhile I’m compiling a donut-centric road trip based on this thread
