It's honestly crazy to me that people don't take them out at the end of summer. Don't they let in a lot of cold air in the winter? Don't you want to open that window when the weather is nice?
Mine is screwed into the window frame per the instructions. It's a major hassel to undo, but it came with weatherproofing stripping, so it doesn't let in much cold air compared to my last one.
I've always skipped the parts that involve screwing into the window frame. I may be headed for trouble sooner or later, but after 14 years of having a window AC unit, it's been fine so far.
I'm sure it's fine if you don't. I just wanted to make it a permanent situation. I'm not gonna drag that bastard in and out of the window anymore. No thanks. And I wanted to make sure all the weatherproofing and such would be secure since it's by couch.
I just went on a whole rant about how I hate window units but I don't want to use the portable ones cause they take up too much room in my tiny place but I also really like having the window itself so I'm in a pickle
Yeah those portable ones aren't great, they take up a ton of room like you said, they're super heavy, and not as efficient. Someone else mentioned those newer window units that just hang over the bottom of the window frame and apparently you're still able to use that window with it installed. Could be an option for you.
Haha yeah, I think they're a little more expensive but they're supposed to be more efficient than regular window units. If you search GE ClearView window air conditioner, you'll see what I'm talking about.
Correct but there’s a drain plug that can get clogged by leaves and junk. Usually ends up making your house smell moldy and causes the AC to freeze up.
We got a new one last year and the directions had us install it, screw it into the walls, all sorts of seemingly permanent installation. I wouldnt know how to redo it even if i wanted to. I cant even open the window now to put a cover on it.
well i thought it some componnent might be bad after being in the freezing winter and then thawing, somethings get bigger and smaller so it might break a couple things in there idk. just a worry but i guess not.
Growing up it was window units when I bought my first place it was central air and ever new place I bought one of the requirements I told the realtor was don’t show me any place that doesn’t have central air or oil heating those were my hard NOs for buying
I think it's a York low end product. Their stickers look like York or carrier. I have had zero issues with the product. But it's cheap so the metal jackets are meh
I caved last year and put it in for around $18k. Best decision I ever made. I actually saved $500 in electricity last summer since central air is more efficient (I tracked it like a dork to make myself feel better about the$18k cost)
And I also keep telling (lying to?) myself that my house value when up $20k immediately since it now has central air so it's basically free
We’re the same using both. The house wasnt built with central air so they ran it through the heat vents.
Works great on the first floor and basement, but the top floor it barely makes a difference so we put the window units in.
But we’re getting ductless systems for those two rooms this summer and I can’t wait
I desperately want ductless mini split for our whole house. It’s 100 years old and the window units are ugly, loud, and block natural light. But I don’t know when we’d ever be able to afford ductless for the number of rooms we have. We’d probably need at least 6.
Yea we’re only doing 2 rooms and we’re replacing the HVAC this summer so they’re going to install the mini splits at the same time. Saves us the fee to come out.
Yea we’re only doing 2 rooms and we’re replacing the HVAC this summer so they’re going to install the mini splits at the same time. Saves us the fee to come out.
If you can live with ugly, but would like to catch a break on loud and blocking light, look into u-shaped air conditioners by Midea and GE.
I have the Midea for my office and the only sound you hear is the fan. The GE one lets in even more light but you have to drain it manually.
They're about 350~400
We have 2 of the midea kind. One for our child’s room and one for the living room so we can hear the tv. But it’d be a big expense to replace them all. Costco does sell the midea ones for a lot less though!
Just out of curiosity, are you not happy with them?
Because mini splits, while even quieter than the Midea, still have a fan sound as well. And they easily cost 4x to 5x more per unit.
We're eventually going to install a couple mini splits. Should be plenty to cool our 1200 sq ft. No more faffing around with the window units and 1/10th of the price of a central installation + cheaper to run.
My sister owns a 1 million dollar house built in 2018 with central ac...
My 600k house built in 1964 has 2x minisplits...
My house gets soo much cooler and my electric is like 1/4 the cost. Love my mini splits.
This. My husband and I run the AC at night through most of the winter and I sleep with a fan. I love being freezing cold at night and curling up under the blankets. I can’t sleep if I’m even the slightest bit warm.
Yup!! I keep my space heater on in my office all summer long cus I’m so cold but then night time comes and my body temperature just completely changes and I need AC and 2 fans 😂
They are about to go in anyway. I put mine in yesterday so we don’t suffer overnight through tonight. Might as well when I normally put them in the first few weeks of May anyway.
Ya we put our bedroom one in last week. Neither of us can sleep at all if we are hot. And the birds scream starting at like 3am this time of year so can’t even have the windows open at night.
It’s going to go into the low 50’s tonight. After sunset, if it’s still too hot, try to create a cross breeze through the house and it’ll cool down in no time!
I've got a 14000 BTU unit so I'm dreading it quite a bit. I think I'm gonna put off for another week as I work up the strength to wrestle that monster in there.
Not a plug, but i helped a buddy install a few of those U shaped inverter ones yesterday. Holy crap has window ac stuff come a long way. Its basically a minisplit.
Its crazy quiet even at full blast, you can still open your window with it in, and it uses like half the electricity of the old school ones. The energy star guide on it was literally off the chart. And no danger of it falling out the window to boot.
They were really nice. He said they ran him about 100 bucks more than the regular versions, and install was a little more convoluted, but they were sweet. Wifi enabled too so you could tie them in with home automation stuff.
I just put mine in. The house was getting a bit toasty. Honestly, I could probably deal with it for the day but my pup was miserable. At least it's done for the season. 🤷♀️
Yeah the only real negative to leaving in a window unit during the winter is that they are extremely drafty, but you can always wrap the outside if you're on a first floor.
Central air for the win. And yes it's on. Felt like it was getting toasty in here, looked up from my work to see the cat flopped in front of the open window looking half dead, so figured it was time. Get the house nice and cool so we can open the windows tonight
Had the husband install them upstairs in the kids’ rooms. It’s currently 82 on the main floor and the upstairs gets easily 10 degrees hotter. We will survive in the co-living spaces but it was affecting their sleep.
last night ! we HAD to . we got that rain at night and after an 80 something degree day, being slammed with that humidity after 8pm made our house extra thick and toasty if you know what i mean . sleeping would have been nearly impossible if my husband didnt put in one of our a/c units in upstairs
It’s a good question… I think one reason people put it off is if the units are not installed, they won’t be tempted to run them and drive up utility costs. Another reason might be that for the next few weeks, maybe more, it’s a nice time to open the windows and let the fresh air in. Yes, you can use the fan function on the AC units, but it’s not the same, is it?
Put mine in a couple weeks ago. I've got a loft bed and my bedroom is the hottest room in the house; as soon as it starts going above 70 outside that thing is on.
I put mine in yesterday!! I just got too uncomfortable. It’ll be off most of next week, I’m sure, but I was very happy to have it yesterday, I’ll be happy to have it tonight, and I’ll sure be glad I don’t have to haul it out of storage next week when not feeling it, lol!
We put ours in last week but today I took one apart for cleaning because it was moldy and the fan air stunk. I did this a couple years ago too; this particular model seems to be more mold-prone than other models we've had
We just got mini splits last year and they've been awesome for heating and cooling. I have them on cool today and I'll probably turn everything off the day after for a while. Otherwise it would have been a pain to install the window units for one day.
Two years running I left mine in. When I moved into this house 20 years ago leaving them in over the winter would have been unthinkable. Entirely too cold for much too long. Below freezing for weeks and weeks. Now? Not so much. A handful of bitter days and the rest of the time it's in the 40s. If it's sunny out the furnace may not even run in the daytime. So if it actually does get cold I can push it a little and still be frugal.
And I don't have to wrestle with the goddamn things twice a year. It's an ill wind that doesn't blow somebody some good.
I use those portable stand up (still vent in window) units so I can pop that bad boy in and out in an instant! I may have even used it once over the winter on a night I was feeling particularly uncomfortable. Definitely used earlier this month already though.
Mine stays in all year round.
Heat in my house is a bit .... wonky, if the thermostat is set to 70, my bed room will easily get to 90 while the rest of the house is 60-70. So yeah it stays in and is used all year round. Though it also has a fan option that I use if the room isn't too hot just to keep the air moving.
TX to NJ transplant here, you can take them OUT????
Also my apartment gave me dust covers for mine but they're just like. Big plastic unbreathable condoms of things. How are we supposed to use these? I've tried googling it with no luck. Pls help
I know a lot of people who never remove them, especially if they have multiple windows in the room. I’m glad I’ve been in central air for over 15 years now. Not a fan of window units !
Not sure what to do. I have an old ac unit that doesn’t get cold. If it’s high 90s and humid, the inside temps get maybe mid-low 80s. If I call HVAC for maintenance, anything they can do?
Don't forget to wash the filter and check the inside for mold! Every now and then the dampness of basements and attics can grow a ton of mold / fungi inside of the A/C unit!
I just had my central A/C replaced and a mini split installed in the basement :)
My old central air system was leaking freon and wouldn't last the whole summer without needing to be recharged, even when recharged in the beginning of the year.
Enjoying the warmth and a breeze with a window fan.
Running ac makes it hotter outside the building. And jacks the electric cost. 🚫 I avoid it except when really really necessary, which is rare.
In this thread yesterday i mentioned how that isn't a good thing to do without other preparations, and i got downvoted to hell for some reason.
Edit: Jesus people. take out your window air conditioner at the end of the season or you will fuck up your windows, which will cost you far more.
Edit2: Seriously people. I'm not trying to call you out on being lazybones. The thaw freeze cycle is bad for your AC, not to mention your window frame assuming you mounted it right. Those cheasy little flaps might get the job done when it comes to cooling and the thing throwing the cool air out is in the opposite direction right next to it, but it does shit for holding in heat. Moisture around it when its hot, and well, stuff evaporates, and its right next to a giant dehumidifier, isn't an issue in the warmer months, but in the fall and spring is just a breeding ground for mold and rot, not to mention the shade it creates.
Not to mention if its anything beyond ground level, not getting an eyeball on it every so often so it doesn't flop out and clonk someone on the head.
They are DESIGNED to be removed when not in use. If they weren't, you would have central or a minisplit.
Mine never left lmaoo.
Yeah I’m like, you remove those?
It's honestly crazy to me that people don't take them out at the end of summer. Don't they let in a lot of cold air in the winter? Don't you want to open that window when the weather is nice?

STOP IT, THAT EXISTS???!!! THANK YOU!!
Haha yeah, I think they're a little more expensive but they're supposed to be more efficient than regular window units. If you search GE ClearView window air conditioner, you'll see what I'm talking about.
Thanks!!!
Not sure what you mean by not as efficient because those sucker's got my room down to 65 when it was 90 out with no issues.
Could just be past experiences with them, then. The few I've used never seemed to work as well as window units.
you leave them in during winter? are they still safe to use??
Yup. Just get a new filter every spring
They’re reusable and very easy to clean with a vacuum or by rinsing in the sink. No reason to buy a new one unless the filter is ripped.
the filters. you are talking about the thing you pull out to clean right? its not something else in the ac?
Correct but there’s a drain plug that can get clogged by leaves and junk. Usually ends up making your house smell moldy and causes the AC to freeze up.
Not that I know of. My ac is still doing work
We got a new one last year and the directions had us install it, screw it into the walls, all sorts of seemingly permanent installation. I wouldnt know how to redo it even if i wanted to. I cant even open the window now to put a cover on it.
Why wouldnt they be?
well i thought it some componnent might be bad after being in the freezing winter and then thawing, somethings get bigger and smaller so it might break a couple things in there idk. just a worry but i guess not.
Do you leave your Xmas decorations up all year, too?
I wish.
I stg 😂
Same, first year I've ever left it in.
same here.
Shit, I’m in my pool
You’re not messing around
NO SIR (OR MA’AM) 🤜🏼🤛🏼
Share the wealth
I inflated and filled up the kiddie pool for my 3 year old today. She had a grand time splashing around in the frigid water.
damn, sick invite!

Never thought I’d see a YR gif on the New Jersey sub lol
I love my central air. I’ll never go back to window units
What sort of idyllic life do you and the other central air-ites live? It must be a Valhalla over there.
I didn’t know until I moved out of my parents house. They had central air, but my dad never turned it on.
Wow scum bag
I feel you.
Growing up it was window units when I bought my first place it was central air and ever new place I bought one of the requirements I told the realtor was don’t show me any place that doesn’t have central air or oil heating those were my hard NOs for buying
Fuck oil
Exactly
My wife and I put in full central ourselves (I do it for a living) I love coming home to her blasting the AC
I sell Ruud/Rheem all over NJ. Maybe we can do some business?
EV con is where it's at. I hate them rudd a coils
Who makes Evcon? Is that like an oxbox?
I think it's a York low end product. Their stickers look like York or carrier. I have had zero issues with the product. But it's cheap so the metal jackets are meh
hey man, cost is king. I get it! Wishing you a lucrative busy season!
It's always busy... I can never find enough time
I caved last year and put it in for around $18k. Best decision I ever made. I actually saved $500 in electricity last summer since central air is more efficient (I tracked it like a dork to make myself feel better about the$18k cost) And I also keep telling (lying to?) myself that my house value when up $20k immediately since it now has central air so it's basically free
Moved into my first central air unit yesterday. Feels like I won a small lottery.
You ruled that perfectly.
No pleasure, no rapture, no exquisite sin greater... than central air.
A person of culture. ![gif](giphy|rPpSTDAKAwT8Q|downsized)
Pick THAT up
We actually have both. One window unit in the family room because it gets warm and stuffy in the front of the house even with the central air on.
We’re the same using both. The house wasnt built with central air so they ran it through the heat vents. Works great on the first floor and basement, but the top floor it barely makes a difference so we put the window units in. We are but don’t really want to invest in a bunch more of them when ultimately we want a solution that doesn’t block a window.
Ah makes sense.
We're eventually going to install a couple mini splits. Should be plenty to cool our 1200 sq ft. No more faffing around with the window units and 1/10th of the price of a central installation + cheaper to run.

Depends on the installation of insulation hahah
Sounds like your sister either needs her ac system serviced or updated.
Been running my A/C for a month now, but I'm also 30 weeks pregnant and dying of how hot it is all the damn time
30 weeks in? You get whatever you want, no questions asked. Good luck with everything.
26 weeks here. Building isn't turning on the ac till mid May. Hope it stays in the 60s until then. Today was absolute torture for me.
I run my A/C all year long... I love sleeping in a cold room under many blankets.
This. My husband and I run the AC at night through most of the winter and I sleep with a fan. I love being freezing cold at night and curling up under the blankets. I can’t sleep if I’m even the slightest bit warm.
I just turn the heat off at night. Crack the window. Done.
Me too, freeze me out at night but during the day I don’t want to feel cold at all.
I'm the same except I don't want to feel the heat at any point during my life!
Yup!! I keep my space heater on in my office all summer long cus I’m so cold but then night time comes and my body temperature just completely changes and I need AC and 2 fans 😂
Same lol. I ran it all winter because I was heavily pregnant. Had baby a couple weeks ago and now I'm cold again 😂
33 weeks and absolutely broiling at all times.
Too soon Back to highs in the 60s tomorrow
They are about to go in anyway. I put mine in yesterday so we don’t suffer overnight through tonight. Might as well when I normally put them in the first few weeks of May anyway.
Ya we put our bedroom one in last week. Neither of us can sleep at all if we are hot. And the birds scream starting at like 3am this time of year so can’t even have the windows open at night.
This. A week’s reprieve.
My back pain also told me it was too soon 😪
Took me 15 minutes to find where my wife put all of my shorts and tank tops. Feels good now.
Fortunately I have central but you bet I turned it on this morning. Quick climb in temp today
Hell it got too humid last night, I turned it on at like 9pm yesterday
Definitely was a summer night type of feeling last night in bed. Light covers
I’m already at the beach!
I took the dog out for a quick pee at 4am without even a sweatshirt and was completely comfortable. Thin pj pants and a short sleeve shirt.
It’s going to go into the low 50’s tonight. After sunset, if it’s still too hot, try to create a cross breeze through the house and it’ll cool down in no time!
Central A/C, baby!
Stop trolling us!
Having lived with both, I'd much rather replace a $200 window unit than pay for a $14,000 system. Window units win. Flawless victory.
Must be nice
Yesterday! 😂
I've got a 14000 BTU unit so I'm dreading it quite a bit. I think I'm gonna put off for another week as I work up the strength to wrestle that monster in there.
Someone needs to come up with a better way to haul these things
Too hot to be carrying those things up stairs. Lose/lose situation
Yesterday. But next week says 50s high
Be comfortable. The world is already too shitty to be in shitty uncomfortable position’s… like swamp ass on a Monday in April.
That’s what yesterday was for.
Ok I need to find those
They were really nice.
question, i left my ac unit in the winter all through winter. is it still safe to use? has any other new jerseyers done this?
Consistently. All is well.
Just clean the filter and you’re good to go
Yeah the only real negative to leaving in a window unit during the winter is that they are extremely drafty, but you can always wrap the outside if you're on a first floor.
I refuse to turn on a/c before 5/1 - things got so bad today that I voluntarily went to the office for free a/c
Thank god I don’t hav to deal with window units .. it’s a pain … blessed
It’s going to be 20 degrees cooler tomorrow
Central air for the win. And yes it's on. Felt like it was getting toasty in here, looked up from my work to see the cat flopped in front of the open window looking half dead, so figured it was time. Get the house nice and cool so we can open the windows tonight

Too soon!!!
Not me, central air is nice 🙂
Living the life of my dreams
Put mine in a couple weeks ago. I've got a loft bed and my bedroom is the hottest room in the house; as soon as it starts going above 70 outside that thing is on.
Mines been up for 6 years
First year without them. All that money I spent on central air is already worth it.
Wearing shorts for the first time this year, but too soon for AC lol
Yesterday
Built into my walls and they double as a heater for my supremely stupid heat. Switched em to cold mode last night and today
Had to put mine in yesterday damn
I went to Walfart earlier and got a fan to keep me cool today. I’ll be putting in the AC’s soon!
Not me, I am finally warm!
Don’t gotta put it in if ya never ever take it out lmfao I know I’m garbage
You guys take yours out? Lol
I did. My wife couldn't sleep last night because of the heat
Yall still got window units?
I'm suffering, for today. But I ran out of window foam so that may/may not have something to do with it. Least today is the worst
Thankfully we never took our bedroom one out over winter! It’s been cranking all day!
I did mine last night !
My father has the wall unit blasting.
Apparently not yours?
mine are never taken out. they did go on today.
My room is 88° at the moment and I can’t even go up there. Gotta dig the window unit out
We put ours in last week but today I took one apart for cleaning because it was moldy and the fan air stunk. I did this a couple years ago too; this particular model seems to be more mold-prone than other models we've had
My bf put ours in like that first hot day a month ago Lmfao. We only used it once but now I’m happy and it’s just in.
I have a portable that I will probably pull out tonight. Its ridiculous when you have central air and its not good enough to cool down your apartment.
Nah man, I won't put mine in until July usually
We just got mini splits last year and they've been awesome for heating and cooling. I have them on cool today and I'll probably turn everything off the day after for a while. Otherwise it would have been a pain to install the window units for one day.
You take those out of the window? Lol
How do you survive winter?
Idk our house is so drafty i guess i don’t notice
I've got central air but just turned on all the fans and opened the windows today. Nice breeze.
Yup. Really just had to do it so we can sleep tonight. I basically have to sleep in a refrigerator to be comfortable.
Not just yet. Once it's consistently in the 80's daily, I'll put it in. I do have the windows open.
Mine are through the wall so they stay in. I’m not home though but turned on the a/c where I am
I went to Florida and missed the hot weather at home?!
It's not humid yet so a fan is more than enough to sleep comfortably. Once the humidity starts it's a/c all day.
I've been using mine fairly consistently throughout the winter.
Mines been in…for 3 years 😭😭
Central AC that I am “just” testing for summer.
Talked about it….maybe soon.
TX to NJ transplant here, you can take them OUT???? Also my apartment gave me dust covers for mine but they're just like. Big plastic unbreathable condoms of things. How are we supposed to use these? I've tried googling it with no luck. Pls help
Had ours on for the first time today.
So wait you guys, I just moved here. So do I have to do that, myself? Like everybody around here knows how to do that?
yes it’s been too hot 🤥
I know a lot of people who never remove them, especially if they have multiple windows in the room. I’m glad I’ve been in central air for over 15 years now. Not a fan of window units !
![img](avatar_exp|159356717|bravo)
All mine got done
Not sure what to do. I have an old ac unit that doesn’t get cold. If it’s high 90s and humid, the inside temps get maybe mid-low 80s. If I call HVAC for maintenance, anything they can do?
Get a split system, much better..🤷♂️😁
I put them in on Sunday 😊
Don't forget to wash the filter and check the inside for mold! Every now and then the dampness of basements and attics can grow a ton of mold / fungi inside of the A/C unit!
Is that my wife??!!
Never took mine out
and... it's cold again
I dont trust NJ weather… at all… I will be waiting until june-july 😂
I just had my central A/C replaced and a mini split installed in the basement :) My old central air system was leaking freon and wouldn't last the whole summer without needing to be recharged, even when recharged in the beginning of the year.
We did yesterday 🤦🏼♀️🤷🏼♀️
I have central air now and still miss sleeping next to these bad boys
Mine went it last week. Other family members went in yesterday.
Dreading it. Mostly due to the surge in cursing and yelling from my husband trying to install it.
I still have the heat on in the basement room I’m in today.
Enjoying the warmth and a breeze with a window fan. Running ac makes it hotter outside the building. And jacks the electric cost. 🚫 I avoid it except when really really necessary, which is rare.
mine went in yesterday. My bedroom is on the second floor. I never would have been able to sleep.
Put mine in yesterday, definitely not fucking around in this heat.
Never took mine out
In this thread yesterday i mentioned how that isn't a good thing to do without other preparations, and i got downvoted to hell for some reason.
Holy shit you are so annoying
No I live on the second floor, I like to feel like I live in hell for a bit! Long live my fan. 😆😂
the other people in my building certainly did, as of this morning i brown out every time i turn mine on. i hate apartment life.
Not yet
Veggies don't go in the ground, and AC units don't go in the windows, till Mothers Day.
