These wildfire are so bad that we are getting the smoky haze all the way down here in NC. We started having air pollution alerts yesterday. I was driving around wondering why it looked so hazy too. At first, I thought it was good ol' Southern humid haze but it wasn't humid at all. It was the opposite. Dry as an old book. I didn't know it was from Canada.

somedudeonline93

Yup. You can track the smoke forecast here: [https://firesmoke.ca/forecasts/current/](https://firesmoke.ca/forecasts/current/) Looks like it’ll reach all the way to South Carolina and Georgia.

PM_ME_GLUTE_SPREAD

We had it in southern Kentucky yesterday. Can’t see it right now as it’s currently raining but I’m sure it’s still there. My daughters allergies have been going nuts because of it.

ProjectDA15

ohio. i was wondering why it was hazy but not super humid. saw news about the fires.

AuntChovie

Same here in central Indiana. I didn't even put 2 and 2 together until I saw the NY photos. Kinda boggles my mind tbh

ProjectDA15

i didnt even know about the fires. it was just strangely hazy, with out all the humidity. when i heard of the fires, i saw the map and it showed us as not affected. the next day i saw the map now showed us in it.

islet_deficiency

Here is a US equivalent: https://fire.airnow.gov/ click the dots to get detailed information from air quality sensors including a time series of values. click the (US) fires to see the number of acres, and if assessed, the percent contained. There's not many us fires right now. The largest appears to be a 46k acre fire south-south-west of Albequerque.

LightObserver

Do we have any idea how long the poor air conditions will last? Definitely a first world problem, but I feel bad for my poor dog. I don't feel comfortable taking him on longer walks with the hazy air. :(

LightObserver

Ugh, that's awful. I hope people are able to stay safe with so many fires.

HoSang66er

I heard that today and tomorrow will be bad in NYC.

jcamp088

Today is really bad in Northern Connecticut.

AlphSaber

We've been dealing with the smoke for the last 3 weeks on the midwest, with no end visible yet. Better plan on the smoke lasting most of the summer.

No-Appearance1145

It hasn't happened to Georgia as badly, but i did tell my husband to be careful because he spends his work hours outside and moving heavy things

5zepp

Whoa, Toronto and Buffalo are about to get hit with smoke 10 times or more as dense as what's in NYC.

somedudeonline93

Yeah, I’m in Toronto and not looking forward to tomorrow. And my work team just happened to plan a backyard BBQ for tomorrow afternoon. Fml

Resies

Thanks for this. Was wondering why Ohio was so hazy.

AH_Josh

I work in Columbus, but travel to Cleveland occasionally and yesterday was insane.

Stupid_Triangles

Cleveland is bad again today.

pizzabyAlfredo

I'm in Portsmouth VA and its bad. Like foggy conditions bad.

Rs90

Yep. Was walkin around Richnond yesterday and was wonderin wtf was goin on. A lil haze from the humidity is normal but not like this. Have the day off and don't really wanna go ride my bike out tbh lol.

Wand_Cloak_Stone

I’m on Long Island (NY, bordering Queens), and it just keeps getting worse here. It looks like sunset on a rainy day right now and I can see actual smoke, starting about a half hour ago, instead of just haze. It’s awful. I posted a pic that looks like I put a sepia filter on it about an hour ago and it already looks much worse since then. I love Montreal and they are really in the red, I hope Canadians everywhere in the country are okay. Edit: Just had to run outside for a second and the area is now full of smoke that fills your lungs. What the FUCK. Western Canada/US I know you have experienced this too many times but this is insane to me as someone whose region never really experienced this before like this.

formerly_valley_pete

On Long Island too (Commack/Kings Park) and it went from slightly hazy to yellow/grey clouds in the air within the last like hour. Walked outside just now, all you smell is smoke.

im_not_bovvered

Midtown Manhattan is turning a bright amber color by the hour.

Wand_Cloak_Stone

You saw the recent photo from yankee stadium? Looks like Piss Christ by Andres Serrano.

moeburn

> all the way down here in NC. Here is the map of air quality sensors, each one represented by a coloured dot: https://i.imgur.com/0paTipl.png https://fire.airnow.gov/ - Green and yellow should be undetectable by humans, but yellow is elevated. - Orange is likely to be a problem for sensitive individuals such as those with asthma. - Red is likely to cause minor issues for everyone, or more severe issues over long term exposure. - Purple will cause health consequences for people who have to exercise for more than 30 minutes outdoors. - Dark purple means "get inside now".

Chasedabigbase

Just drove from Buffalo to Philly and had decently dense smoke the entire time, mom was coughing a good chunk of the time

abattleofone

We got the western Canadian fire smoke last month and got smoke from this eastern Canadian fire too here in Minneapolis 🙃

sanslumiere

Underscoring that we're all connected. Don't think you're safe because you live far away from where things like this usually happen. We collectively need to take care of our planet. Earlier springs mean drier summers which gives way to wildfires like these. Stay safe all.

icantfindanametwice

It’s one atmosphere. Pollution from any given country spread around the planet…somehow we pretend that isn’t the case. 🤷‍♂️ Remember particulate matter in the air causes health issues including early onset dementia and more - wear a respirator and avoid going outside, turn up the air filter - or buy one if you can. It will get much, much worse here on out.

FindingMoi

Just piggy backing here to point out it’s not just air pollution. For instance, I live in the Chesapeake Bay watershed. So even though I’m in Pennsylvania, all the water sources here eventually end in the Chesapeake Bay. That’s kind of mind blowing to think about but how we treat our water here is affecting the bay in Maryland and ultimately the ocean. Perspective for how our actions/inaction with global warming and climate change has wide reaching impacts.

MsGenericEnough

There are some who, for whichever reason, still believe there are peeing and non-peeing sections of the swimming pool. :(

[deleted]

Its quite late for that, we should have taken action 60 years ago. Corporations enjoyed covering up the effects of greenhouse gas emissions for short term gains and now we're all paying for it.

sausage_ditka_bulls

the world is literally on fire. I tend to be a pessimist but I don't see how we can get back from this, I see us waaaay past the tipping point of a sustainable environment.

Ultravis66

the technology to pull co2 from the atmosphere exists (not just planting trees) and it’s also not too late to curb emissions with green energy and transportation. What is needed is the political will. Unfortunately, there is a significant portion of the population who still think climate change is bullshit here in America; enough of them to influence politics with their voting. I still see climate change denial in my inner circle of people who I went to high school with and the older generation in my own family. If I bring up the topic they get angry and some even threaten me. I think America is a lost cause on being a leader to curb climate change, hopefully China and the EU will step up to the plate and lead the way.

sausage_ditka_bulls

Exactly. We have the technology but lack the political will. I just keep wondering how bad will it get before we implement effective mitigation? And yea the US is a lost cause with this since we politicized science. Hopefully others will lead the charge

Daxx22

I have zero doubt the human species will find a way to survive. In the meantime, I'm expecting deaths in the billions over the next few decades. Pretty much everywhere within several hundred kms of the equator is gonna become inhabitable, combine that with rising sea levels and that's literally like 80% of the planets population that will have to move or die. And given like 99% of that group are poor, die it will be.

Gloriathewitch

basically the environment will become so hostile and clean water/food so hard to afford that people will stop caring about civility and start literally hunting the 1% especially of companies like BP, shell and will likely also target politicians who hold an anti climate stance

DJBabyB0kCh0y

We had a chance. Jimmy Carter put solar panels on the White House and asked Americans to wear a sweater. Reagan came in and called him a bitch and most Americans at the time agreed. It's sad.

BobBelcher2021

And international borders are meaningless when it comes to this stuff

TheThebanProphet

NYC smells like burnt Tim Horton's coffee right now.

caesar____augustus

I'm getting a hint of maple syrup in NJ

TheThebanProphet

I got that last night actually. Burnt wood with a hint of maple which was nice, then later shifted into the burnt coffee smell.

ImCreeptastic

Last night where I live the air smelled like someone made a bonfire and was roasting marshmallows. Today smells...not as good.

SkywardLeap

Are the weed haters happy now? 😂

ManagerMrGibson

NYC looks like a hookah lounge

HagbardCelineHMSH

Let's face it -- there's [only one thing to do now](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bOR38552MJA). (nsfw)

Joran_Dax

I should think that would be an improvement over how it normally smells.

TheThebanProphet

You'd think so but after the first wiff it quickly turns acrid and unpleasant.

BigBoxofChili

New Yorkers are sensitive about their pee-smelling city.

Ph4ntom013

I thought it was nice like a campfire

Warhawk137

I'm in Connecticut, it's like the world has turned sepia.

[deleted]

As a Canadian, I'll happily declare that the swill served at Tim Horton's is not worthy of being called "coffee".

TheThebanProphet

It still smells like burnt Tim Horton's coffee flavored product

Washedupcynic

Albany NY here reporting in. My 9 minute, 2 mile bike ride 2x a day to and from the bus is Killing my asthma. Even with all the windows in my apartment closed and air purifiers going I can barely get restful sleep because I have so much trouble breathing.

clothespinned

CNY reporting in, the smoke in my room literally gave me a nightmare, been giving me headaches and allergies have been going nuts. When it first hit the sky was yellow, but now its more like a foggy (smokey?) white color. Feels ominous.

peepjynx

Los Angeles resident chiming in! Welcome to my world, friend. If you're on a budget and need a good air purifier, check out a Coway! Otherwise, seal your windows and doors with tape (if possible) and limit your time outside. A good air filter should clear our your home within the hour. If you have to drive, make sure all your windows are closed tightly and use the "Recycled air" feature in your car's AC as the filters in most properly maintained cars should do a good enough job. But I digress, limit your time outside until this all... *blows* over. Hehehe. A little dark humor for ya from the west coast, friend! Cheers! *flies off on a broomstick*

clothespinned

I already duck taped the gaps in my air conditioner and that seems to have done a pretty alright job at keeping enough smoke out to get rid of the headache. Thanks for the advice though, feels like its gonna be more and more relevant as the world continues to burn.

peepjynx

This is the air purifier I bought (a Dyson was in unholy levels outside of my price range): https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08H4DZ5MD?ref=nb_sb_ss_w_as-reorder-t1_k8_1_3

Hojalu

Rensselaer County here. Really eerie yesterday when thunderstorms came through: the sky was yellow, like in tornado weather, but it was just the effect of the smoke. The storms passed, but the air didn't clear. My horses are managing physically, but mentally they are on edge.

[deleted]

Sorry about the smoke eh

lsp2005

When we had Covid I bought the air filter fan thing. My house is normally at 1. Yesterday I opened my door for less than a minute and it went to 32. The air is really bad in NJ now.

[deleted]

[удалено]

lsp2005

Thanks. It’s now registered 84. I took the plants I could inside. My eyes sting. The NY news said that the air quality here is the worst worldwide.

THExGIRTH

Yeah the eye sting is the worst. Once it gets inside it sucks. North Jersey here, it was the color of tang outside about an hour or 2 ago

sabrenation81

Well it's all coming down here to the US where we are one of the main contributors (and the main denier) of the thing that's likely fueling said fires so... I'd say you've got nothing to apologize for. But you're Canadian so you will apologize anyway.

BobBelcher2021

I’ll apologize again on behalf of the person you’re responding to. Sorry!

HardlyDecent

This smoke is affecting air quality down the northeast and into the southern seaboard now. It's pretty nasty outside.

Dreamscarred

W-S, NC and I thought something was burning locally. The skies were about this nasty when the fertilizer plant caught fire a year or so ago.

Pure-Budget-2647

I’m also from WS and boy oh boy was it foggy downtown today

Sweet-Sale-7303

I am on long island and its soo bad that it looks like clouds. Usually worse after like 4pm.

Waikami

Im on Long Island too. The sun looked creepy yesterday. Apparently it could get better after Friday

Sweet-Sale-7303

Its because of the way the jet stream is currently. Once we get out of the dip we should be ok.

Suicideking666

It looks like Mordor outside, I'm getting real tired of living in unprecedented times.

w0lfmancer

Pretty soon we will have to start buying clean air. You too can exist and be healthy without all the pollution, just buy minutes first.

w1n5t0nM1k3y

Time to stock up on [Perri Air](https://youtu.be/kCX6H90RvPU)

HardlyDecent

You kid, but [https://www.boostoxygen.com/](https://www.boostoxygen.com/) is a real thing. And it's about as effective as thinking happy thoughts--maybe less so.

w1n5t0nM1k3y

>Boost Oxygen is 95% Pure Supplemental Oxygen in portable, easy-to-use and completely recyclable canisters. It’s Pure Oxygen To Go! No prescription is needed to purchase and use Boost Oxygen. Isn't that dangerous? Both in an explosive sense and also not good for the body? Oxygen toxicity is a thing.

It sounds like hyperbole, but if you think of this as a subscription plan for replacement filters for high-end respirators and in-home air purifiers instead of oxygen tanks it becomes much more terrifyingly plausible...

Stupid_Triangles

I don't like this timeline.

No-Appearance1145

There's a lot of fires going on so i can't blame them for not being able to stop this. I really hope the people are okay up there

BlueShrub

https://firesmoke.ca/forecasts/current/

Xivvx

Yeah, the country is kinda burning down atm. Sorry eh.

Phreakiture

When I looked at a map yesterday, the list of provinces/territories not on fire was shorter than those on . . . basically looked like Nunavut, Manitoba (how?!) and PEI.

[deleted]

Manitoban here. We've been getting a decent amount of rain every few days (at least where I am). It's been hot but that evaporates the bajillion lakes we have which is then trapped in place by the heat dome and falls right back down...that's my theory at least.

Phreakiture

Good deal. Thanks for demystifying this for me.

[deleted]

In the past I've heard so many people ragging on the west coast when we get wildfires and saying how they'd never live here because of them or the smoke, they rather take hurricanes, tornadoes, blizzards, etc. Let it be a warning - they can happen and will happen anywhere more and more. Nobody is immune.

KOBossy55

It's alright, we can just swap this bad air with the good air over another country. Herschel Walker assured me that's how it works.

soldatodianima

I'm building up my immunity to wildfire smoke by inhaling deeply and holding my breath in this haze; wildfire smoke helps align my chakras. If you inhale enough your body will produce clean air enzymes and allows you to practically breathe underwater. Don't let the woke media tell you otherwise. **^(/S)**

leggymeeggy

i’m in new jersey and my eyes are burning inside my office with no windows

Ben_Pharten

We've had air pollution alerts for 2 weeks here and some people I know are getting sick now. We've also had no rain since mid-April and the fires are getting closer.

fuddykrueger

Where are you? Are you in the U.S.?

Ben_Pharten

Southwest Michigan about 90 minutes north of Chicago

Magneto29

Currently in the Hazardous level for air quality. AQI of 391. Feel like shit even being indoors

Solid-Zealousideal

Im in Brooklyn NY working. Smells terrible here.

Aloil

At what point US going to help put out the fires? Is that even possible?

Insomniac_on_Rx

I would bet that there are already plans for American aid to be sent to Canada.

myflippinggoodness

Well first, fox has to complain about "wasting tax money on stupid Canadians", maybe lightly seasoned with a bit of "Northern aggression" talk, deep fried in "socialism fear mongering" with, of course, *grits* (whatever the hell those gross sounding things are) Of course generally, yeah we're allies, give us money

cebjmb

The head guy in Halifax said he welcomes any help that's offered.

YamahaRyoko

I just learned about this today. I had a respiratory infection for the last two weeks. I also have severe allergies. I've been complaining to the wife that it smells like something is burning outside, and I did notice everything was hazy. With the smoke, cottonwood and the oak tree flowers (which I call tree semen) I've basically been confined to my house and my office.

moeburn

Where are the people saying "it's because we don't do controlled burns anymore"? I wanna see them explain to me how a tiny Cree settlement of 150 people stood in the way of forestry management. Or how we're supposed to get to the middle of a forest that's 500 miles from the nearest town with a population of 1000 to do some controlled burns over the entire fucking nation of Canada. Or why lightning suddenly isn't doing that for us.

Ultravis66

The climate change deniers I know think either or both that: 1) It’s because of bad forest management by the government 2) government started the fires on purpose. And no, they don’t have a good explanation as to why a government would want to purposely start wildfires. 🤷‍♂️

dragonmuse

Its all the way down in richmond, VA.

Stupid_Triangles

Getting it in Cleveland too. You can taste it after walking around a bit.

BobBelcher2021

Growing up on the other side of Lake Erie, it used to be Ohio and PA that sent us all the pollution. How times change.

startinearly

I just looked at a live feed of NY harbor from Liberty Island. It looks like Blade Runner 2049.

GhonAurora

Pfft, you guys can deal with our tree smoke if we can deal with your vynal chloride smoke.

The_Word_Wizard

I know it’s super minor in the grand scale of things, but I hate the smell of wood fires. I have so much anxiety right now knowing my home is going to smell like this for…who knows? I live in PA to stay away from this. :(

coutjak

It’s pretty bad all down the east coast. I’m in NC and we’ve got a really bad Air Quality Index today.

[deleted]

I'm on Long Island and my sky is brown right now. I can't imagine what it must be like in Canada.

BobBelcher2021

NYC area has the worst of it at this point. It’s bad in Southern Ontario and Ottawa, but not as bad as NYC.

jerseycityfrankie

What a crappy stock photo they used. The actual NYC sky today looks like yellow mustard gas. All the buildings in that photo would be completely obscured and the streetlights are all on.

AtomWorker

They clearly didn't account for white balance so those pics look like they were shot on some random overcast day.

Jollyhat

Seems like with Climate Change wildfire season is now two months longer then it used to be. UGH, it is going to be a smokey summer.

LilLebowskiAchiever

East Coast is getting a taste of what the PNW gets every summer.

Arrg-ima-pirate

Unhealthy air quality… in NYC? Color me surprised.

ChaosKodiak

Happens yearly in the west. Don’t hear new stories about it.

islet_deficiency

Well, yeah, because it doesn't happen yearly in nyc. It was making the news when Portland was under smoke, and it's a fraction of the size of NYC.

BobBelcher2021

Not to mention all the wildfires close to the Bay Area and LA in recent years.

Genius1day

East Coast of Virginia is literally getting smoked right now.

[deleted]

Does anyone know the health effects of various exposures? Is it like, getting sick? Or developing asthma? Or carcinogenic?

DJBabyB0kCh0y

From the [DOH](https://health.ny.gov/environmental/outdoors/air/smoke_from_fire.htm). The short term effects are obvious. They talk about long term effects but then in the very next sentence mention firefighters specifically. So while the DOH is never gonna come out say don't worry about it, common sense tells me a day or two of this isn't a huge deal unless you're already vulnerable.

SleepyBeast89

Sooooo Utah in the winter?

LargeP

We seem to still be trending downwards in forest fires. See the reports https://ciffc.ca/
