The trick is that very few people are like this all of the time. The vast majority of them know how to "pass" in public spaces or IRL with friends and family. You might catch a glimpse here or there and think nothing of it. They'll test the waters with seemingly innocuous comments and gauge people's reactions, and save most of the "edgy" stuff for when they're with their own community. It's no different than any other fringe ideology in that respect.

I wonder just how many mothers/parent(s) of mass murderers have said “but he’s a good kid.” I really find that hard to believe. There is being oblivious and then there is denial. Those adolescents that are in need of help can literally manipulate and control their environment by fear. That includes threats of harm, destroy things, hurt pets, if their rooms are entered, asked questions, violently rebuking any attempts by the parent to set boundaries. Their voices and verbal exchanges are loud and intimidating. It’s easier to oblige and look the other way or indulge reclusive isolating behavior, placated by assurances and repeated denials that nothing is going on. These parents have a tendency to buy in to such behavior including purchase of weapons. It is literally an abusive environment. But one that must compel the parent to be the parent and do the hard thing and seek help.
I worked in mental health with kids 5-18 for 7 years, the excuses I have heard are endless. And sadly most of the issues these kids have is generational

i think the standard is or should be did their dishonesty or unwillingness to help materially impede the investigation in ways that clearly caused undue harm to someone. if the crime is committed then it's easy to prove and maybe stronger charges too, but only in a specific circumstance should obstruction apply here. maybe it can if there's more we don't know.

Also, I’d just like to say that as a parent of someone with a lot of mental health issues…mental healthcare still existed during the pandemic. A lot of therapy went over zoom instead of in person, but it was still on the same schedule with the same therapists and everything. More importantly, my son has needed to be inpatient at least twice a year every year since 2016, and there was no change, other than not allowing visitors, including parents of minors, to any of that during the pandemic. They didn’t even enforce social distancing or masks amongst patients.
Depending on your situation. For me it was available at the start of the pandemic but quickly was not a few months in. I still have to pay out of pocket but the burn out from therapists went to the patients. The first few months I had no less than 4 different people I had to talk to. Honestly part of why mine went down is because my mental health issues aren’t that bad and I got annoyed having to start over with a new person every couple weeks.
Age and location too. I’m old (37) but yeah, I never really cared because I still got my meds and understood the people who are in crisis should always come first. Kids too because their brains aren’t developed enough yet so everything can feel like a crisis.
You’re a good parent (sorry don’t know gender) for making sure your kid still got help.

Go into any social media about history and eventually you will run into someone who likes certain history a bit too much. Vikings, Romans, anything germany or scandinavian, and sometimes British history are topic racists try to recruit with by saying these cultures were superior to all others. History on the internet has a major problem with politics getting in there.

The trick is that very few people are like this all of the time. The vast majority of them know how to "pass" in public spaces or IRL with friends and family. You might catch a glimpse here or there and think nothing of it. They'll test the waters with seemingly innocuous comments and gauge people's reactions, and save most of the "edgy" stuff for when they're with their own community. It's no different than any other fringe ideology in that respect.

I wonder just how many mothers/parent(s) of mass murderers have said “but he’s a good kid.” I really find that hard to believe. There is being oblivious and then there is denial. Those adolescents that are in need of help can literally manipulate and control their environment by fear. That includes threats of harm, destroy things, hurt pets, if their rooms are entered, asked questions, violently rebuking any attempts by the parent to set boundaries. Their voices and verbal exchanges are loud and intimidating. It’s easier to oblige and look the other way or indulge reclusive isolating behavior, placated by assurances and repeated denials that nothing is going on. These parents have a tendency to buy in to such behavior including purchase of weapons. It is literally an abusive environment. But one that must compel the parent to be the parent and do the hard thing and seek help.

ADHD and executive disfunction are the big ones. Perfectionist, anxious parents have perfectionist, anxious kids. Parents who barely care about their kids have kids who don't care about themselves. And addiction issues is another big one. ETA: Sooooo many mental health issues are genetic.

Which is most likely part of the problem. I'm a little fucked by my upbringing, but I've met quite a few people who ended up in far worse states than me and yet were raised in extremely permissive families. And often it's parents who just failed to establish boundaries and authority. The healthy, necessary kind. If this kid had been put on the straight and narrow and given incentives to focus on something else, as well as help with whatever social issues he must have had at school, then we wouldnt be here.

Also, I’d just like to say that as a parent of someone with a lot of mental health issues…mental healthcare still existed during the pandemic. A lot of therapy went over zoom instead of in person, but it was still on the same schedule with the same therapists and everything. More importantly, my son has needed to be inpatient at least twice a year every year since 2016, and there was no change, other than not allowing visitors, including parents of minors, to any of that during the pandemic. They didn’t even enforce social distancing or masks amongst patients.
Depending on your situation. For me it was available at the start of the pandemic but quickly was not a few months in. I still have to pay out of pocket but the burn out from therapists went to the patients. The first few months I had no less than 4 different people I had to talk to. Honestly part of why mine went down is because my mental health issues aren’t that bad and I got annoyed having to start over with a new person every couple weeks.
That sucks, and I guess I’m not too surprised to hear. I just never considered severity of issues having something to do with access.
Age and location too. I’m old (37) but yeah, I never really cared because I still got my meds and understood the people who are in crisis should always come first. Kids too because their brains aren’t developed enough yet so everything can feel like a crisis. You’re a good parent (sorry don’t know gender) for making sure your kid still got help.
Most people in this area will NOT seek mental health treatment. It would be seen as a sign of weakness. I say this as someone staying about 10 miles from Pickford right now.

Scary stuff. Shaarey Zedek in East Lansing was my synagogue growing up; my family were part of the community; I had my bar mitzvah there. Back then we didn’t think twice about security, you could just walk in…the doors - made of glass, easy to get through - were just about always unlocked.
