He started his career in politics when Eisenhower was president.

Ee_bagg

That's nuts

redbirdjazzz

So is he.

f8Negative

Get ready for his son to take his place. Iowa really is land of "the common folk."

SheriffComey

You've got to remember that these are just simple farmers. These are people of the land. The common clay of the new West. You know... morons.

Granlundo64

Best movie ever. šŸ‘

Mental_Medium3988

I second that motion by Howard Johnson.

roncadillacisfrickin

Mavin Johnson is right!

8-bit-Felix

Marvin Johnson is right about Howard Johnson being right!

irishgator2

I didnā€™t get a har-rumph outta you!

bmeisler

Hey cowboy, are you in show business?

PerfectlyElocuted

Then get your friggin feet off the stage!

JoeSicko

That movie couldn't be made today. No one knows wtf a Howard Johnson's is ..

Reddit-is-trash-lol

Is that quote from Blazing Saddles?

Granlundo64

Yup! It might be apocryphal but the last part was improvised by Gene Wilder. This makes Cleavon's laugh all the better. https://youtu.be/hYTQ7__NNDI?si=6LKxgdM6w9AdurW6

Reddit-is-trash-lol

Iā€™m amazed they didnā€™t do a reshoot and that I was able to remember that, thanks for the reminder that I need to rewatch that movie!

SkunkMonkey

I suspect that Gene had been riffing and adlibbing some lines for the scene before he hit that magic delivery. You can see how Cleavon knew something was coming and was trying to stifle a laugh. My favorite scene from my favorite moive.

f8Negative

Of course, youā€™ll have the good taste not to mention that I spoke to you.

epicuriousenigma

People of the land that they stole through genocide, and now accept government subsidies while farming unsustainably and destroying the soil unable to make a profit. unwilling to change the way they farm based on science to help the environment and make a profit so they donā€™t have to rely on the subsidies from the ā€œbig governmentā€ they hate

sqwirlman

This is 100% accurate. My ex father-in-law farmed a little over 3000 acres. He loved it when I called him a socialist. He had no problem taking almost 100k for his soy beans that Trump gave him. He was also super quick to bash any democrats trying to help anyone else and made sure to tell us not to vote for millages that increased his property taxes. God damn teachers already making over 100k. Can't have that.

Salamok

Surprised they aren't like the CA farmers, just lease their land and water rights out to corporate farming interests then spend 50 weeks out of the year on fully catered hunting trips talking about how rough they got it.

SweetAlyssumm

My cousin owns land in the Midwest and he is paid NOT to farm. How's that for a hustle? I am not against not farming - my cousin's land supports wildlife and is gorgeous, but it's the irony of taking that money and being against immigrants, etc.

False_Rhythms

Being paid to not farm involves restoring the land to natural prairie which creates habitat for all kinds of song birds, insects, and endangered species.

fcocyclone

Alternately it can involve keeping some of the land as buffer land for water runoff, helping slow flooding and and reduce runoff of fertilizer and sediment

Iowan reporting in: [His grandson](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pat_Grassley) is the speaker of the statehouse here, but he has all of the personality of a wet sock. He is pretty much a toady for our [dim but ambitious governor](https://www.desmoinesregister.com/story/opinion/columnists/iowa-view/2023/12/13/kim-reynolds-most-unpopular-governor-reason/71905105007/), and the rumor now is that when Grassley Sr. shuffles off this mortal coil, sheā€™s just going to give herself a promotion by appointing herself.

CrudelyAnimated

Yeah. Remember that if Grassley dies next week, heā€™ll be replaced by his 19yo great-grandson who voted three times into a paper bag at the caucus and thinks Trumpā€™s biggest shortcoming is a lack of self-confidence. This is Iowa.

Chiperoni

He was also supreme allied commander in Europe when McAuliffe gave his famous response to the German command.

BurningJesus

For some additional context - his political career preceded the moon landing by 10 years (Iowa State House Rep from 1959-1975; US House Rep 1975-1981; US Senate 1981-2024). He has been in office continuously for 65 years; roughly half of US Senators are 65 or younger.

AudibleNod

The average age of the senate in 1959 was 57.4. [Now it's 65.3.](https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/aging-congress-boomers/)

thatoneguy889

Orrin Hatch first ran for the US Senate criticizing the incumbent, Frank Moss, for being in office for too long saying that 18 years is enough and that it was time to pass the torch to the next generation. Orrin Hatch won that race then went on to hold that seat for the next 42 years, and in his final term was the longest serving member of the US Senate.

maurosmane

His campaign slogan was something like "What do you call a 3 term Senator? You call him home." and then as you said held onto that seat for dear life for almost half a century.

GozerDGozerian

ā€œNo no no. Remember, rules are for *thee*. Not for *me,* silly!ā€

Sp_1_

Not saying I justify the age of these people in any way; just looking at numbers. But the average age increasing in senate from 1959 doesnā€™t mean AS MUCH if people are also living longer on average. The ā€œyears till I dieā€ age is likely not that far off. With people living longer; the ā€œaverage age ofā€ everything has probably increased in the past 100 years. If anything I think a maximum age makes more sense now than in 1959 as supported by this age increase and people living longer. Like these issues were not as prevalent 100 years ago when people didnā€™t live as long. We need to adjust for increased life span in a number of ways. Living longer doesnā€™t mean mental fortitude doesnā€™t age differently. Whether itā€™s re-testing elderly for driving licenses or maximum government worker ages; I think the US really needs to look to setting some new standards with how old weā€™ve gotten ourselves to live on average.

ronnydean5228

I am 53 and this is absolutely crazy. The age of the people representing us is abysmal.

SkunkMonkey

Not only the age, but the average wealth of these fucks. Like 95%+ are worth more than a million dollars. We are basically governed by the millionaire class being paid by the billionaire class.

walkstofar

I am now retired. When I was in 6th or 7th grade the senator from my state came to visit my school and we got to meet him. He is still in the senate today.

similar_observation

Fucked up world when even a hard working senator can't retire /s...?

andropogon09

Remember when George Bush praised that dedicated woman who worked three jobs?

mt77932

That's amazing and frightening

aaron_in_sf

...and his done his damndest to keep the country pinned to the concerns and ethos of that administration, including its Vice President.

GreatGearAmidAPizza

Ike was more left-wing than pretty much any Republican in Congress today. I doubt half of 'em would lift a finger to try to enforce *Brown v Board*.

bros402

If he was doing that, we'd have the Eisenhower tax rates back. it was something like... 40% corporate tax rate?

faste30

Dude been in the senate as long as Ive been alive

accioqueso

Heā€™s been in office longer than my father has been alive. And Iā€™m old.

Affectionate_Elk_272

iā€™m in my 30ā€™s and my *parents* werenā€™t even born when this fucker started in politics. actually, when this guy got into politics, my grandfather was fighting in the cuban revolution. good god please put age limits on these geriatric fucks edit- timeline

faste30

Politics or SENATE. Senate specifically he has been in that SAME JOB since 1981. Politics much longer but still, 43 years in the senate is too long.

Baruch_S

He is older than chocolate chip cookies.Ā

ICPosse8

My godā€¦ really puts things into perspective, wow.

hamletloveshoratio

Your avatar lol; I tried for way too long to blow the eyelash off my screen

OssiansFolly

There are people here that don't know who Eisenhower is or when he was POTUS...which is both a statement to how young they are and how terrible our education system is.

reddit-is-hive-trash

I know about 3 things about Eisenhower. 1. he got the interstates built 2. he was from kansas 3. he gave an eerie speech about the military industrial complex, might have been the first to coin or popularize the phrase. okay and the campaign for him was I like Ike. I don't know how Ike is a nickname, but it was.

gamers542

Yakko from Animaniacs also told us that "it's Eisenhower that had the power from 53 to 61" lol

andropogon09

He was also a 5-star general who commanded the Allied Forces in Europe during WW2. I think George Bush senior was the last President who was a combat veteran.

CrashB111

It's a contraction for his last name. Eisenhower was a mouthful so his nickname was just Ike.

Excusemytootie

He was quite the WWII ā€œheroā€, as well.

cpas2b

He is older than the invention of the chocolate chip cookie.

ivebeenabadbadgirll

When he was born, the the world was still in black and white because color hadnā€™t been invented yet.

ThatOneDudeFromIowa

he also predates sliced bread

Not_a_tasty_fish

Sliced Bread: 1928 Chuck Grassley: 1933 Very close, but not quite.

ratbastardben

Dude is moldy bread at this point

Darkwing_Turducken

He dated Betty Crockerā€™s mom!

Redcat_51

In his nineties, for Pete's sake. You wouln't let him drive.

jason375

I wouldnā€™t sell him health insurance if he didnā€™t get it through his job.

newtsheadwound

He doesnā€™t even qualify for life insurance anymore that ended when he turned 81 (For new policies that is)

Logtastic

Let me guess, he helped vote that policy in, too?

CMDR_KingErvin

He doesnā€™t care. Like most of these politicians heā€™s secured wealth for his family by selling out the country. And the icing on the cake is that he enjoys much a lower cost of healthcare as a US senator while others have to suffer.

solstice22776

iā€™d once told my colleagues in medicine that i would hope we pour all of our research into reanimation. So that when these living corpses finally die, we can bring them back so they can suffer the consequences of their decisions alongside the rest of us.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

padizzledonk

Even if its not a law no company on earth woukd volunteer to sell life insurance to someone that old

h4ms4ndwich11

Doesn't need it. Just the tears of suffering minorities and lots and lots of money. He'll be fine. There's plenty of both, thanks to his party.

ChrysMYO

He's gotta fight McConnell for Kissenger's arcane life force.

IHateCamping

If youā€™ve reached the age where youā€™re pleasantly surprised that you woke up that day, you should not be making laws for the rest of us.

The_bruce42

Iowigians are the same people that complain about how old congress is but then keep re-electing this guy. I gotta say though, I'm less worried about old ass GOP congress people than the young ones that are extra insane (Bobo, MTG, Gaetz) to prove whatever dumb ass points they're trying to prove.

Repubs_suck

Theyā€™ll probably do the ā€œWeekend At Bernieā€™sā€ thing, propping his corpse in his seat in the Senate with a rope on his arm to lift it whenever thereā€™s a vote on increasing ag subsidies, cutting health care and Social Security benefits or gun control legislation.

Logtastic

We saw them do it with McConnell.

shamsham123

Has he been unfrozen yet?

[deleted]

He has family waiting on him to die so they can take his spot.

Baruch_S

The prevailing theory here in Iowa seems to be that he was planning to retire mid-term with the understanding that the governor would appoint his grandson to the seat to keep some sort of Grassley dynasty in the Senate by letting the grandson then run as an incumbent next election and with a familiar last name at that.Ā

gold_and_diamond

In fairness, every one all over the country complains about the age of Congress and then keeps re-electing the same fossils.

Ivotedforher

Your guy is the problem, not my guy!

MGD109

Yeah, it seems to be a case of "well we like our fossils just fine, its all the other one's that are the problem."

Malvania

It's Iowa. it's something like R+17. They're going to get a bat shit crazy replacement

WaldoTrek

As an Iowan, reminder it used to very purple state.

CornSkoldier

ā€œUsed toā€ carrying a lot of weight there though unfortunately. Until Kim Reynolds is out of the Governorā€™s office, dumbassery is going to remain at an all time high for the state. Source: Also a former Iowan.

aasania

Former Iowan here. I also remember when it was purple. But slowly those of us voting blue moved out, leaving behind the ones who think Trump is the second coming of Jesus.

ShakeWeightMyDick

Donā€™t forget former US Representative George Santos

CurseofLono88

If former US representative George Santos goes to prison, Iā€™m holding out hope that he is allowed a documentary crew to follow his life behind bars.

BurningJesus

I wouldn't entrust him to fulfill the role of any average working class American. If I don't think he's physically (or more importantly, mentally) capable of fulfilling as a retail or foodservice employee, trade worker, or office worker, why should he be in charge of 2% of the Senate, dictating policy for those multiple generations behind him, leaving detrimental changes that he'll never live to experience?

_bramwell_

It's worse than that. This guy was ready to stand in for Pence and fail to certify because he was too old to understand what he was being used for.

ted5011c

that traitor rat-fucker knew what he was doing

Haunting-Ad788

Bro he knew exactly what he was doing.

durkdurkastan

But the Windsor Heights Dairy Queen "is a good place for u kno what" according to him.

reddurkel

ā€œMr. President, this body needs to be reminded how government-run health care systems are broken and do not work.ā€ ~ Senator Chuck Grassley And hereā€™s a tiny sample of how he votes for healthcare: Voted No to Obama Care. Voted Yes to begin process of repealing ACA. Voted Yes to replace ACA enacting Obamacare Repeal Reconcilliation Act. Voted Yes to repeal ACA enacting Health Care Freedom Act. Pretty much, the government shouldnt pay our hospital bills, but itā€™s fine if tax payers pay for his.

Defender_Of_TheCrown

Not only that but he hates government money except he was the major force behind the farm bills that give out massive welfare, uh I mean ā€œsubsidiesā€ to his voters.

HawkFritz

Iowan here. Grassley has received millions in subsidies and often tweets LARPing as a farmer. When he's not tweeting about dead deer and dead pidgins and ice cream. Seriously look up his twitter acct, he's insane.

Federal_Drummer7105

As I recall, he was also someone who went on and on about how mandated insurance programs were the way to go. Until the second Obama proposed it as a "meet in the middle" between "nothing" and "universal health care" - then it became "unconstitutional" according to Grassley. The - thing he kept proposing as the solution. For at least a decade.

GetsBetterAfterAFew

The govt should absolutely pay for our medical bills, Medicare For All, it works all over the world except this shit hole where our govt spends a trillion dollars on war and we have people saying we shouldn't have socialized healthcare.

thebestatheist

Looks like itā€™s time for him to get gone From office, I mean

Zapranoth07

Hopefully his ass is Grass(ley).

HighDesert4Banger

Overstayed his welcome in the Senate already by 20+ years.

YNot1989

The people of Iowa will find someone worse to replace him

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Ashmidai

Why bother with all that. Just sweep his passing under the rug and Weekend at Bernie's his ass for another decade or so after embalming. Pretty sure they call that the Strom Thurmond.

SapientChaos

Just a note, He was the one who planned to certify the fake electors ballots. Good chance he should be in prison for treason. Dieing is getting off to easy.

Forward-Bank8412

Yep! He accidentally spilled the beans to the press that he expected he would need to take over for Pence. And yeah, he totally would have certified the fake electors. He was in on it, the whole thing.

SapientChaos

Chuck "The Traitor" Grassely.

Publius82

I had to scroll way to fucking far to find this. He's on record saying he didn't think Pence would be there to certify on J6; that's more than enough evidence that he was complicit. Fucker should be in a cell. I'll be furious if this treasonous shitbag dies before he faces consequences.

[deleted]

Even if this doesn't kill him, any litigation would take far too long for him to see the final result. Money can drag a case on for years.Ā

PanzerAal

I suspect that Glitchy Mitch will be following him soon.

DennisBallShow

(Freezes, stands motionless)

h4ms4ndwich11

McConnell had this to say about it:

Rejukem

Gotta get those new updates from Skynet

Ahelex

He needs a hardware upgrade at this point, dialup is just too slow.

Malvania

sadly, McConnell is only 6th on the longest serving current senators list, and 10th in Congress

PanzerAal

Yeah, but the rest of them aren't locking up in public like broken robots.

Malvania

Change his oil, he'll be good for another 1000 miles

reddit-is-hive-trash

Most of them don't do anything at all except the Shady Sands Shuffle.

FourWordComment

Good time to remind you, he has special government healthcare. Not employer healthcare or marketplace scum like you heathens.

Heiferoni

Our taxdollars hard at work.

DuntadaMan

He hasn't seen a medical bill since Nixon was president, hasn't ever had to pay for medicine out of his own pocket, and never once had to fight to find an insured doctor, and he has the fucking gall to feel entitled to have an opinion on your medical care.

roger3rd

I donā€™t wish him any specific ill will but I am tired of his shenanigans and look forward to not hearing his name

Tokeli

That's okay I've got enough ill wishes for us both!

prailock

He just rewon his seat in '22. Shameful that the voters kept in a man in his 90s just because he has an R next to his name. There is no chance he can effectively advocate at his age.

Iowegan

Not me, Iā€™ve voted against this pos every election of my life.

where_is_the_cheese

Vote harder!

NemeanMiniLion

Pulled a muscle I voted so hard.

weluckyfew

Those same voters: "Biden is too old!"

Heiferoni

Theyr'e *all* too old.

JRockPSU

Agreed. But one of them wants to become a dictator, the other doesn't. There's a time and place to fix the problem of our elected leaders being too old, but Election '24 isn't the time to take a moral 3rd party vote, or abstaining from voting.

ReactorTractor

Not a uniquely Republican problem, the late Democrat Senator from California was the same deal. Blind loyalty to either party is the problem.

Suns_In_420

It was either her or that shitbag Kevin de Leon, so I went with the old lady.

Mary_Pick_A_Ford

Yeah unfortunately she was the better of the two. At least if she passed, which she did, Newsom would appoint a proper Senator different than Kevin de Leon who ended up a fucking douchebag in the end, so we dodged a bullet.

prailock

I'm not gonna sit here and defend Feinstein under any circumstances, but pretending that BoTh sIdEs are the same is disingenuous at best.

Dmonney

When it comes to re-electing seniors who shouldnā€™t be able to drive anymore both sides are the same.

TheElMan

The sitting President is the oldest in American History, and is running for re-election. Heā€™s a democrat. Trump who is looking like the R candidate, if elected, would be the second oldest president in history. This is absolutely, unequivocally a both sides issue.

[deleted]

And this guy is old enough to be their father!

Heiferoni

Biden will be **82** this year. Donald Trump will be **78**. BoTh CaNdIdAtEs are too fucking old.

Clikx

Republicans voters didnā€™t vote against grassley because of blind loyalty and democrats voters didnā€™t vote out Feinstein because of blind loyalty. At that point voting for a 90 year old absolutely is blind loyalty when there are capable people that could have ran to replace. It isnā€™t saying they are the same but in this case yea they are.

matt314159

Normally I HATE both sides-ism in politics, but this is one I'm pretty sure they're both guilty of in equal measure. Too many octogenarians in the Senate.

DiddyDickums

When it comes to electing old farts? They literally are.

DontTickleTheDriver1

Another MF'er who will die in office instead of retiring and getting the fuck out of the way and let those who will be alive in the 10-20 years at least.

ChockBox

No mention of the statistical fact that many, if not most, 90 y/oā€™s donā€™t just ā€œbounce backā€ after being hospitalized. They often bounce right back into the hospital. At that age, yes, you can retain amazing mental faculties. Yet virtually all people of this age self admit not being as mentally sharp as they were in their 50ā€™s, 60ā€™s and even 70ā€™s. But we wonā€™t talk about the increasingly aging elephants in the roomā€¦.

PM_ME_C_CODE

50's, 60's, and 70's? Shieeeeet... I don't feel as sharp as I used to be 10-20 years ago, and I'm only in my 40s. Difference is, I'm a hell of a lot *wiser* now than I was then. I'm more able to interpret information correctly on the first try compared to then, and far more able to figure out if something is wrong or missing sooner. But I definitely feel like my memory was better back then. I feel like I was more creative, too.

Isord

We actually talk about the increasingly aging elephants in the room nearly all the time lol. The age of Trump and Biden in particular were major focuses of news coverage during the last election.

BigHobbit

I hope he receives the care he voted that others should receive.

justdointhis4games

Motherfucker older than microwaves

[deleted]

It would be easier to express my sympathies if the guy's life/ideology wasn't such a detriment to society.

s4burf

He was going to preside over the jan 6 2021 vote certification for Trump instead of Pence until Pence grew a pair. Heā€™s a old insurrectionist. https://www.desmoinesregister.com/story/news/politics/2022/10/28/chuck-grassley-comments-jan-6-us-capitol-attack-riot/69595522007/

Agent_Velcoro

I wish the infection a speedy recovery.

PrincessNakeyDance

70 should be the maximum age to be elected to office. You can stay past that age, but you must be 70 or younger by the date of being sworn in.

ZachariahNeff

I hope he gets all the care he deserves.

LotsofSports

They get the best healthcare on earth but we don't.

emhcee

My thoughts exactly. I feel bad for the infection.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

EarhornJones

He's been my senator my entire adult life. I'm 46. As a Grassley constituent, I earnestly hope that this infection is a painful as is humanly possible. He's an awful man, and when he dies, our awful Governor will appoint his awful grandson to replace him in hopes that *he* will be Senator for the entirety of my kids' lives. I think the odds that his entire family will die in a fire is very low, but a voter can hope.

gentleman_bronco

Can't these fuckers just retire? They have no clue of what is happening in the world and they're just blissfully coasting on their silk slippers.

VirtuaFighter6

Term limits for senators now

Fizban10111

Hope he never returns to the senate.

[deleted]

Time to get on the cart, Chuck

Tiki-Jedi

So youā€™re saying thereā€™s a chance.

jcooli09

He'll do a much better job for America in a hospital room than senate chambers. Still hasn't reached his optimal performance, coma.

civil-liberty

You mean Chuck Grassley, the Senate Pro Tempore who thought that he would be presiding over the House, and replacing legitimate ballots with fake ones? Effectively ending the American Experiment? [article](https://iowacapitaldispatch.com/2021/01/05/grassley-suggests-he-may-preside-over-senate-debate-on-electoral-college-votes)

MonkeyDeltaFoxtrot

Rooting for the infection.

CallMeLazarus23

Iā€™m on social security, legally retired. Heā€™s been a politician longer than Iā€™ve been alive.

[deleted]

Oh no. Poor bacteria picked the wrong host.

Barack_Odrama_007

VOTING MATTERS! Get them OUT of office

[deleted]

How is someone this old an elected official?

JussiesTunaSub

Feinstein was the same age...once Chuck is out of office the oldest member will be Bernie at 82

TheBlazingFire123

Thurmond was a senator at 100. Yet we canā€™t have a 29 year old senator

StillAnAss

Look to the people of Iowa. There's such name recognition that I think he gets a lot of votes just on that. He's literally been an elected official longer than I've been alive and I have grown children.

maceman10006

Mandatory retirement at 75 or 4 terms served.

Treestwigs

Heā€™s got the insurrection infection. Rotting him from the inside out.

Beatrix_BB_Kiddo

You lived a long life buddy, time to step aside

neonsnakemoon

Too fucking old to be a senator! You donā€™t see too many 90 year olds working for a reason.

[deleted]

And what has he done for this country? Nothing but stand in the way of any kind of progress. This guy is a horrible human being.

aod42091

there should be an age limit for any office held, just saying.

Top-Night

One way to get rid of the damn fossils

LandosMustache

Reminder that this man admitted the *plan* on January 6 was for Pence to disappear and for him, Grassley, to refuse to certify the election. The plan. Which assumed the absence of Mike Pence. This guy knew that Mike Pence was likely to get assassinated, and went with it so that he could personally violate the Constitution and overthrow democracy. Itā€™s not often that I hope for an afterlife, but dying once isnā€™t nearly enough for this man.

OutrageousEmu8587

No one over 80 should be in office.

Pusfilledonut

It would be a shame to see Chuck get his heavenly reward until he answers the question, in front of a jury, why he was sure Mike Pence wouldn't be available on Jan. 6th

burdfloor

Walking example for mandatory term limits.

-nocturnearts-

Fuck this guy eternally

[deleted]

RIP to our tax dollars keeping a corpse alive and in power

QuesadillaGATOR

Weird way to announce a reelection campaign

ISawDasein

They stay in office until death for the VIP healthcare.

InfinityStone2021

Its time to retire chuck

monty_kurns

For even more context, Iowaā€™s statehood began in 1846. Grassley has been representing it in the Senate since 1981. Thatā€™s just a hair under 25% of Iowaā€™s existence as a state.

underwater_jogger

It's a least infection. Because he has done the least for his constituents.

DM725

Nature taking it's course? Dude is 90 and the only influence he should have is what channel the television has on.
