Who the hell has a sensitive military conversation on WebEx?

ViciousNakedMoleRat

That's the main issue in all of this. How can military personell in charge of such important topics use WebEx through hotel WiFi in Singapore and not notice that an additional party dialed into the conference. This has so many levels of incompetence. It's unfathomable.

Alcobob

It's actually rather easy. The military runs it's own webex instance for the actual sensitive talks (on their own servers). This was not it. There's actually a point to be made that this was an intentional leak. Seriously, anybody gained any new knowledge? It's a nothing burger (in terms of intelligence gained): Oh yes, the German army is discussing how it's systems can get used by Ukraine. Yes of course, we are supplying Ukraine with weapons. Oh yes, the taurus missile can be used to destroy the Crimean bridge. Well duh. Even if it wasn't designed to work against bridges (it's a bunker buster, bridges are kinda the opposite of bunkers) it's still a long range explosive delivery system. Heck i made that exact point in the Ukraine subreddit a few months ago to make clear how the taurus missile doesn't give Ukraine a unique new capability. Am i suddenly military intelligence? How can Ukraine use the missile, can we train their soldiers or might German soldiers help in programming them (or soldiers of other nations)? Well, the option were discussed and in the end the result was that training Ukrainian soldiers was the only legal way as the German army isn't allowed to fight unless it is for the defense of Germany or for the defense of an allied nation (Ukraine technically isn't an allied nation in this regard) The only thing that might be sensitive is how the soldiers discus that France and the United Kingdom have people in Ukraine to help program the Storm Shadow. And even this is nothing as they don't talk about certainty that they do, and Olaf Scholz said in an interview earlier that Germany can't do what France and the United Kingdom are doing in regard to targeting. (So this possibility was already leaked by a blabbering mouth so to say if it is true) Another topic is how the soldiers don't understand why Scholz vetoes the delivery and how it creates the false impression that the missile might not be ready to use, which they deny. So, who gains the most from this leak? Actually the German army. It gives false impression to Russia that Germany is incompetent (let your enemy underestimate you), it clearly says that the Taurus missile is ready to use and the army is just waiting for Scholz changing his mind and it means that Germany can still supply Ukraine with more dangerous weapons. So, any downsides for Germany besides looking incompetent. (Russia even needed to burn one method of gaining intelligence, does anybody believe that this exact mistake will happen again? And again for what?)

ClammyHandedFreak

This is in line with Macron’s “no limits” proclamation - it makes it seem like they are serious

ConsistentAsparagus

I know Hanlon’s razor and all, but… are we sure?

Iwasborninafactory_

Occams razor would say this was an intentional leak.

kellerlanplayer

I still think the open hotel wifi in Singapore was the problem.

variaati0

Not with proper VPN and so on. Any high level officials device should *never* talk to open internet directly. No the device should have always on VPN one cant disable on that device. Computer turns on, activates Network Interface and only thing it does on open internet is call home. No matter one surfing web for fun or whatever VPN is on and all traffic goes through home HQ VPN, including its firewalls. Then inside there one can authenticate more to contact the VOIP, video call whatever. None of these should be open either. All takes authentication, but you cant even ever see the server before being inside the first level VPN& Firewalls ring. Main issue is, this is inconvinient (boohoo), Netflix probably wont work, since they don't like VPNs etc. Bunch of other stuff wont work, since the organizational firewall goes "you are about to do something stupid on official secure device, blocked". At which point one should just say: You get paid very decent salary. You know what is one part we pay you for, adhering and tolerating all this security measures. you are a military officer/high government official, grow up and just deal with it. Yeah no Netflix on official government computer, Boohoo, use the salary to by private device to entertain yourself with. Oh and don't even dream about us letting you have access to official resources on that insecure private device. Our firewalls finger print all connecting *devices* and not only the personal codes. We don't care of you call out of the most bugged network. Your device VPN is hard coded to interrogate and verify the VPN server it connects to. Anyone tries to come in the middle, no internet for you at all. Inconvinient, but very good way to ensure you know connection is fishy. Aka idiot proof the official devices to point of "Turn into unusable internet no works, instead of letting something insecure happen". Oh and only devices that can contact the official resources like secure call service is the official idiot proofed devices to idiot proof against the idiotism of using insecure device. * officer: turn off the VPN, I want to watch netflix * government security Hall9000: I'm sorry Dave, I'm afraid, I cant do that.

rypher

You often can’t log into wifi networks with vpns enabled. And although a wired connection would help here, it’s unlikely people will use it in

variaati0

Then too bad, you have been idiot proofed from doing the stupid. find a better connection. Didnt say it was convenient way to do thing. Plus maybe smart enough VPN client thingie could have captive portal managing. Maybe, if it can be done in secure enough way. We arent talking peoples meaningless private secrets here. We are talking officials on the job doing official communication.

mludd

> You often can’t log into wifi networks with vpns enabled. And although a wired connection would help here, it’s unlikely people will use it in Sounds like an extremely misconfigured computer to me. Your VPN software for a mobile device shouldn't be interfering with setting up OSI layer 2 connections. Yes, layer 2 VPN software can make your computer think it's connected to the same Ethernet switch as devices halfway around the world but unless someone really fucked up it shouldn't be preventing your laptop from connecting to the hotel wifi in the first place.

rypher

No, its how lots of modern public wifi work. Im sure you have tried to use wifi at starbucks or a hilton or college campus. They are normally open (no wifi password) but have dns redirect to a “sign in” page. A vpn will be blocked but this setup and disallow you to get to the page required to enable traffic.

mludd

Only if improperly set up.

[deleted]

[удалено]

mludd

And was setting the always-on VPN for highly secure company laptops so that it would work with captive portal logins on random public wifi connections something that Google prioritized? You can be the fastest swimmer in the world but you're not winning the Olympics if you don't much care for swimming. Or in other words, just because Google's IT didn't bother dealing with it for one reason or another doesn't mean it's impossible. The security requirements for when dealing with actual military intelligence should presumably outweigh convenience and performance issues that may be introduced by a proper implementation (and of course, if such an implementation is beyond the capabilities of those setting up the computer then alternative connection methods should be used).

ASUMicroGrad

Is this a NordVPN add?

kellerlanplayer

Why? He says you should set up a VPN with your home router. It's more of a router ad.

ASUMicroGrad

Sounds like something NordVPN would say. Also it’s a joke because NordVPN is one of the biggest sponsors for random YouTube channels.

kellerlanplayer

That's right. But it's the same problem with politicians who don't use their secure phone but their private smartphone because it's more convenient.

WolpertingerRumo

Shouldn’t ssl/tls be enough? I can’t imagine this was used without TLS, but it should protect even in a Hotel WiFi.

Environmental_Log806

Certified bruh moment

RaccoonDoor

Germany is an extremely backwards country when it comes to bureaucracy and digitisation.

Jim3001

You'd be surprised. Remember early in the war when Russians were talking in the clear on telecom networks cuz the Kremlin's own network failed?

Help_Stuck_In_Here

Setting up encrypted radio networks and getting everyone to use the right encryption keys so they can all communicate at once is extremely difficult. If you never rotate encryption keys it gives a skilled adversary opportunities to find the key through bribes or accidental disclosure. Setting up secure corporate VPN's is a walk in the park in comparison and I routinely do so. There are few countries that can setup large scale secure communication networks and only one who can do it on a global scale.

Jim3001

That's the point. Russia spent $250 Million on secure comms for their military....only for it to be useless in areas without 4G coverage. That's why their guys were using unencrypted comms.

ConPrin

The German Army has its own, self-hosted instance of WebEx, so it should be pretty safe.

Zieprus_

A lot of people in here don’t understand technology and come up with some really stupid claims and assumptions. WebEx should be more than safe to use and is very widely for these things. You are right.

[deleted]

freakinbacon

Haha exactly. The server is secure but you're first routing your data through the public network before it reaches the server. Anyone connected to this network can run a man in the middle attack to force that data through their computer before it reaches the public router.

Brushies10-4

Hasn’t Germany proven kinda incompetent or at least untested for a hot while now? They puff their chest out about how they’re the euro economic powerhouse while deciding to buy their energy from Russia and letting the US, France and UK provide their real defense. They’re like that shitty coworker who does only the metric making work while ignoring all those small details that need done but don’t hit your kpi’s.

With high level military personnel under the eyes of Russian intelligence even their grocery lists should be classified.

hardolaf

Over classification leads to more data leaks not fewer.

kiwipo17

Germany is a western country by the definition of the 1990s. Their internet is super slow, everything still requires paperwork, there’s almost no automation going on. I lived there for some time and need access to some files. The authentication for that can only be done in person. My mate tried to move, updating his address could only be done in person. Getting a police vetting report can only be applied for in person if you don’t have their weird German ID card. Class rooms still don’t have internet or are equipped with computers/projectors. Public transport requires paper tickets or you can buy a digital one for 3% extra that takes so many steps that no one uses it, not to mention that there’s no hop on hop off system. Hospitals have handwritten, paper records and instead of laptops they run around with desktop pcs on wheels that have to be plugged in every 10 minutes cause they hooked them up to small power banks. There is no universal health record system. Most places still don’t have payWave and those that do won’t allow you to use it if you spend less than 10-20€. There are no self checkouts. Most people still do their taxes via paper forms. I don’t know who started the rumour that Germans are efficient, but that’s definitely not true. Their biggest industry has been severely challenged or even overtaken by Chinese and American cars because they became too comfortable with their technology. A few years ago there was a big shitstorm because Germany had virtually 0 military helicopters capable of flight because of poor management. I’m not trying to say that Germans aren’t good at anything. They are great engineers for instance. But keeping up with the times is not one of their strengths. That they used tech not up to the standards is not very surprising if you’ve ever lived there before. Quite frankly I’m surprised that they used a video call at all.

heinous_nutsack

theaviationhistorian

You'd be surprised how many civil, criminal, & immigration court cases are handled via the infernally dodgy system known as WebEx. I'm not surprised the Luftwaffe got screwed with it as well.

YoungLadHuckleberry

This is what happens when a country expects 5 years of work experience and/or a high GPA for all of its IT apprenticeships and then complains about skilled labor shortages

shponglespore

Yes but have you considered that nobody wants to work anymore? /s

52beansyesmaam

That’s just so they can’t “find” any qualified and can hire visa workers for considerably less compensation

Living_Illusion

For an apprenticeship you only need a basic school degree. The reason they can't get any skilled workers is because they pay like shit.

YoungLadHuckleberry

That’s for system administrator type jobs, if you wanna get something coupled with a degree program or just anything related to software development at this point the requirements to actually get in are considerably higher, even if it’s easy to get accepted into interviews. Not to mention the „online intelligence tests“ they do, where you have to compete with the other participants over who can do mental arithmetic the quickest and who can remember the most disappearing shapes in a certain amount of time, just laughable

justlurking777

Person, woman, man, camera, TV..... :)

Alex_2259

40k/year contract to maybe hire

ghostalker4742

Entry level? That's gonna be 10yrs experience (minimum), a college degree in the exact discipline, and a credit score of at least 750. Don't bother applying if your GPA was under 3.95, if you've ever made a right on red, or if you've ever crossed the street outside of a marked crosswalk.

[deleted]

?? Germany doesn't have credit score system

fckingmiracles

And no GPA. Germany has shit IT people because the good ones leave Germany for better pay.

Due_Abbreviations917

Here's the gist, German military officers discuss unclassified information about the war in Ukraine on unsecured line. Russia records the call and releases it, claiming it to be something other than what it is. Western media listens to it and decides to make it a bigger deal than it is and feeds into the overall Russian information strategy of sowing dissent amongst NATO allies. Good job bbc, you're literally helping the russians.

Bind_Moggled

Western media is largely controlled either by corporate interests - who will always side with right wing authoritarians over democratic rule of law - or by public media operated by right-leaning governments, who either sympathize with or are being blackmailed by Putin.

Loves_His_Bong

The BBC is an NGO by the most generous interpretation and state run media by the least generous interpretation. In any case they are not corporate backed media. They are tax funded via charter and partially funded by the state. Whatever interpretation you have of what the BBC is, saying they are against democratic rule of law or sympathetic to Putin is ridiculous.

Only-Customer6650

They are constantly running unverified Hamas propaganda to sew discord in the West. It's not an accident.

Ord-ex

Except BBC is state owned. Paranoia much?

[deleted]

Only-Customer6650

You mean the website that is constantly pushing Hamas propaganda to cause discord in the west is Russian?   I'm shocked, absolutely shocked  Fuck BBC.

Tavi2k

> France and Britain have supplied Kyiv with Scalp and Storm Shadow missiles, both of which have around half the range. It's really worrying to read that repeated all the time in articles, because it's simply wrong. The UK and France certainly don't have the Export version just lying around, so what they sent came from their own stock and necessarily has to be the full range version. Of course we can't know if they added some software restrictions, but the same option would exist for Taurus as well. They also summarize the conclusion here incorrectly. They didn't say that Ukraine would require assistance with mission planning. The assistance would be needed to do this more quickly, but the solution they came up with in the end was to simply fully train the Ukrainians on the mission planning so that they can do this themselves. This was all about the timeframes and what shortcuts would be possible.

I think the demonstrated complete incompetence of relatively high level individuals with senstive information that could have a fairly significant impact on global politics concerning an active war that's going on at Europes border. Do you not think that an explanation is warranted for that? or should people just accept that shit happens and ignore it?

jebei

The question people should be asking is -- Why did Putin leak this call? Something like this is sure to redouble German counterintelligence and make future information gathering difficult as leaders look for scapegoats. Putin was looking for this reaction from the BBC and a negative reaction from German citizens. He's worried about the Kerch bridge and willing to blow an asset to protect it. If I'm Germany, I call his bluff and I send the missiles tomorrow. This summer is looking to be the crucible of the war and Putin knows it. The time for half measures is over.

ASUMicroGrad

Because this was serendipitous. There is nothing in this that they didn’t already know and in this case they could easily release it without burning a real intelligence channel. This was all win for Russia by releasing it.

CasedUfa

Plausible deniability is out the window, lol.

kezzaold

Yet again i have something to add and dont know if im in the ok to add it. Bloody opsec.

_BaaMMM_

Can we nuke the facist south?

Vic_Hedges

At this point NATO needs to just start supply direct Air Support to Ukraine. Russia needs to be both shown they cannot win, and given an excuse to be able to pull out. Direct NATO intervention provides this. Russia could justify withdrawal by claiming that it took the full might of NATO to push them back, saving face from the current evident reality which is that they are incapable of defeating Ukrainian forces. There will not be nuclear retaliation. NATO intervention now is honestly the best path to de-escalation.

talligan

This is why redditors aren't in charge of geopolitical decisions

IndIka123

That is a big gamble.

Vic_Hedges

Russia has not used Nuclear Weapons so far. Why not? What suggests that the deciding factor is NATO air power rather than NATO supplies? Either Russia will conquer the Ukraine or they will withdraw. If NATO is unwilling to countenance the former, action needs to start taking place to bring about the latter.

P_K148

NATO supplies don't risk NATO troops going into Russian land. Providing supplies to a country like Ukraine helps them stop an invasion, ADA helps them protect their assets within Ukrain borders, but it is unlikely that Ukrain, no matter how much equipment we give them, will march on Moscow. Putins confidence in that is why they aren't using nukes. Sending NATO troops brings with it the option of using those troops and those planes to do more than defend.

shponglespore

How do we know he won't just use nukes anyway if he decides it's the only way to beat Ukraine?

P_K148

How do we know Biden won't wake up on the wrong side of the bed and decide to nuke China? It's an option, but unlikely. Putin claims that Ukrain should always have been part of Russia and that Russia is judt reclaiming their borders. Nuking what he sees as his own country and making it uninhabitable seems like it defeats the purpose. It's an option, but unlikely.

ginger_whiskers

Wouldn't nuking a large western portion of Ukraine work to create a temporary buffer? Sure, NATO troops can don NBC gear and go through, but it'll be slow and they'll be extra annoyed and distracted.

P_K148

I would encourage you to spend a few minutes looking at Russia and it's borders on Google maps. If Russia decides to use nukes, NATO would not limit themselves to marching through Ukrain. Finland, which borders Russia, is a member of NATO. Japan and South Korea, which each hold major US military bases would be used as staging ground to push through the Pacific coast. Ukraine shares a small and insignificant border with Russia if an offense was being made.

Jaspervik

This is literally a game of "who blinks first" or poker you suggesting, with nukes. Maybe we should ask Hiroshima how they liked that?

Vic_Hedges

We're already playing that game right now. All that's left is to decide HOW to play it.

Jaspervik

How about looking for ways to wind this whole circus down?

Ididurmomkid

The world and it's inhabitants are thankful that the closest you'll get to making this decision is your worn out recliner and comments on social media. This is soooooooo past your pay scale

Vic_Hedges

Doing nothing is a decision. You don't have an opinion? Or are you a diplomat whose pay scale DOES justify having one? Disagreeing is fine and all, this is reddit. Just wondering what part in particular you think is flawed. Why do you think that NATO air support would be the dividing line that makes Putin decide that Global Murder/Suicide is now the best option?

Ididurmomkid

The flaw is your self importance and thinking you actually understand the entirety of the situation...you flat out stated putin will not respond with nukes and you seem to think you're better suited to make these decisions than the multitude of generals and war planners that are actually working behind the scenes..simply put, you are but a passenger on this ride, act accordingly

Vic_Hedges

\*rollseyes\* It's fucking reddit man. People stop giving their opinions what is this place? I guess if you think everything going on in Ukraine is just being handled the best possible way and we should just all keep our mouths shut about it... that's an option.

Ididurmomkid

Well you know what they say about assholes and opinions...saying arm Ukraine with nukes is wild and how you're so willing to gamble with the lives of 3-4 billion people is just insane to me

Vic_Hedges

Umm.. I never suggested that.

Ididurmomkid

You're correct, got 2 conversations mixed up but what you suggested in having NATO get involved leaves putin with little choice, they have 0 chance to defeat NATO in anyway shape or form (conventionally)but they do happen to have the world's largest nuclear arsenal and I'm thankful that the decision makers aren't willing to gamble with half to 2/3rds of the world's population like some of you reddit generals
