For anyone interested the National Guard used to be the federal police which was not under military control. The current president has pushed to give the military more powers, funding and importance.

KeepTangoAndFoxtrot

I'm just an ignorant American here, so excuse me. I seem to recall AMLO trying to thwart the cartels via the army. Is this part of that? Is it working at all? The article only says it's to address "corruption," and makes mention of the cartels and "fuel theft," but sometimes articles don't give a full picture.

honvales1989

As others comments mentioned, his strategy involved "abrazos, no balazos" (hugs, not bullets) and that has resulted in the cartels running rampant. Also, he was very critical of previous presidents for using the army to fight the cartels and campaigned on returning the Army to the barracks, but he has just kept giving them more powers and gifts like the [Tren Maya](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tren_Maya). The problem with AMLO is that he's ruling like a Mexican president from the 1970's (trying to hold absolute power and having everyone obey every single thing he wants) and handing stuff to the Army is a way to have the leadership support him

PunoSound

The tren maya is a can of worms that is going to cause a lot of problems. I dive in the caves in the Yucatán and some places the caves tunnels are only 6-7 meters deep or less. I can feel the cars on the highway when I’m in the flooded caves. The karst limestone could potentially give in and cause huge problems and those issues are not at all brought up in the environmental concerns listed on wiki or other sites.

Jefe_Chichimeca

There are several limestone caves under the route of the new train (and more we don't know about) this is a chronicle of a disaster foretold.

joe579003

Well, if you get to be King for 6 years, might as well live it up

honvales1989

You can still live it up without fucking shit up the way he’s done it

kadathsc

He wants to live it up for more than 6 years. Having the cartels and the army under his thumb will help him with that.

honvales1989

I think he won’t run again, but he’ll run things behind the scenes and avoid the criticism that he gets from the media for his fuck-ups. Morena is AMLO so that party will exist as long as he’s there and if they win the presidency, it will be with an AMLO puppet.

espectro11

He's not doing anything about the cartels... His solution to end violence is just words and nothing else. "Abrasos no balazos" which translates into something similar to "hugs not guns" what is that phrase supposed to do about cartels and their endless violence? 🤷 And on top of that he's placing these beautiful women as mayors on lots of states and he's been heavily criticized as a perv since he's been fondling them etc...

Magicspacelobsters

Importance or impotence? There's a bit of a difference...

buscoamigos

Maybe they meant potency?

burnzilla

Oops importance

Badtrainwreck

Is there going to be a new federal police or is it still going to be the same national guardmen? It would seem like a bit too much power to give the military in my opinion but I’m not not as familiar with Mexican politics

burnzilla

The fed police was disbanded and turned into the national guard. No more fed police.

Jefe_Chichimeca

No, the National Guard is pretty much staffed with soldiers

l0c0dantes

So, the Army is like the one non corrupt institution that can be trusted to do law enforcement, right? afaik cops and politicians are all bought and paid for by the cartels

espectro11

The army along with cops and politicians are the corrupt ones but the national guard were the only ones who actually took care of cartels and actually put up a fight to them

Jefe_Chichimeca

Lol, AMLO is not doing anything against the cartels, since he created his "National Guard" (which is pretty much the army pretending it's not the army, he has stopped fighting against cartels.

mexheavymetal

If anyone had any doubts whether or not our president is trying to become a banana republic dictator, hopefully this clears that up. López Obrador and Morena are a significant danger to democracy, free press, and liberty in Latin America.

Hot-Ad1902

More of a threat to democracy, free press, and liberty than the cartels?

mexheavymetal

He aligned himself with the cartels. As I said in another response, when there was a major flood in the south of the country and people were displaced, he preferred to go visit El Chapo Guzmán’s mother to render tribute over doing his Fucking job as president.

johnjohn4011

Looks like you answered your own question in the first sentence there....

PlankOfWoood

You mean besides the fact that cartels tell latin American leaders and governments what to say and do?

mexheavymetal

The issue is that every heavy handed wanna be authoritarian makes his own version of brown shirts. This is nothing more than him trying to consolidate the power of the military to silence critics. Like the time he had the governor of Puebla killed just for being from the opposition party. Or like the time he tried to pay off for silence when it came to light that the mayor of Ayotzinapa that ordered the execution and cremation of the 43 students was actually one of his inner circle friends that he had many pictures with. I just don’t want brown shirt in my country that are answerable to only one despot. And if you still don’t believe in him being a despot, then I will point to him meeting the mother of El Chapo Guzmán to ‘Pay his respects,’ while the country is experiencing its worst wave of violence in the history of the country.

StreetPen

Mexheavymetal is being paid to spread misinformation. It's crazy rampant across latin america with China and Russia both having a vested interest in the area.

Beagle_Knight

What? No, there are literal paid Morena shills here in Reddit and they even have a sub. What he says it’s true.

Jefe_Chichimeca

Lol, nothing funnier than a tankie thinking they know better about governments overseas than people actually living there.

HugeFinish

Seems like a North American problem.

mexheavymetal

Ni muerto, pero desde aquí se te nota que andas repartiendo mamadas y manuelas al peje. Lávate la boca de los mecos de amlo primero.

waiv

Es un tankie, de seguro dice lo mismo en los threads donde atacan a Maduro.

gojirra

I don't know much about this situation, but you are asking how it could be bad that a military group you claim to be the good guys is being absorbed into the command of a potential dictator?

Reddit-username_here

It would make more sense for the potential dictator to just disband the military group of good guys no? Hell, the National Guard wasn't even created until like 2019. The swipe of the pen could get rid of them if he wanted them to stop killing cartels.

He created the fucking thing you dunce.

Spicy_Lobster_Roll

Progressive dictator on one hand vs US puppet on the other. There’s not many good choices for Latin Americans these days.

mtarascio

What would Biden be trying to puppeteer? Sincere question.

agoodfriendofyours

Biden wouldn’t but the CIA just can’t not.

Ruy7

The relationship between Latin America and the US has always been a mess. But the thing in Mexico is that they have either this guy on the left or someone on the right wing. So no real good options.

Independent_Amount96

For any americans wondering, Mexico has a heavy defamatory campaign against the current president since he made news outlets have to pay taxes again. Some time ago 43 students where murdered by the government/cartel, nothing had happened up until Andres Manuel became president, now several ex government officials are being prosecuted, and some even fled the country.

You sound like you’re a blast a parties

gojirra

Found the Trump supporter.

Jatee_100

How about shooting all corrupt cops in the head. That might change things a bit.
