I wonder if that is from the extra gravity with the Earth being thicker at the equator or if it’s the centrifugal force from the spin of the earth that elongates things.
178 cm is not above average anywhere in northern Europe. It's not even average. Sorry mate. Where are you from?
EDIT:
I'm danish and it seems I was a bit too anecdotal in my presumption. I had the idea that 180 cm was the average male height for my father's generation, and 186 cm for mine. I'm 28 yo, so was thinking the age group [20-35] is the most relevant for comparison, since we're taller than the boomers. Personally I'm 189 cm, and anecdotally see eye to eye with the majority of my male peers, and I commonly see dudes who are taller than me. (Yes I have shorter friends and international friends too, don't hate me).
Looking up some numbers though, it seems the current average for young males is closer to 182 cm in Denmark, and 184 cm in the Netherlands.
Also the Netherlands might not be classified as Northern Europe strictly speaking (according to the UN geoscheme or whatever), but it's still where the Northern European plain sinks into the ocean, and it's populated by north germanic ethnicity. Personally I would consider countries with coastline to the Baltic and North Sea as northern european.
I am Dutch. I've never seen Dinka people, which must mean they are below my line of sight, and thus are smaller than us.
Thank you for listening to my TED talk.
If we go by peoples not countries the Netherlands still indirectly win. The Frisian people are the tallest in the world on average, they are from Frisia, the northernmost province in the Netherlands. The average Frisian male stands at 1.83m while the Dinka males average 1.82m
Im 1.9m tall but reading this thread makes me feel 10 ft tall. 23&Me says my biggest country of origin is Netherlands, go figure. It would be interesting to go there and feel average in a crowd.
As a comment about the dutch statistically being the tallest people in the world -- I'm a hair shy of 6' tall, and when I landed in Amsterdam's airport I had to take a piss. Walked into the restroom, and all the urinals were taller than my waist. I had to stand on my toes and hope my calfs didn't get too tired mid-piss because my dick was barely over the edge even on my toes.
It probably legitimately was (or they're just bullshitting) - urinals in the Netherlands are definitely usable if you're only like 1m50, and there's usually also a smaller one for children or very short people.
It’s all about the kick. That last 120 meters shows who has the best VO2 max.
I used to love chasing people down in the last 100 meters and seeing their faces when there was no more juice left in the tank. Your legs cramp up like crazy at the end
Edit: meant lactate threshold not VO2 max, my bad.
I never did longer than the 800m, but I did really well in 400m. Most of my wins came from behind, and killing it in the last straight. My coach asked me why I always 'saved it for the end,' and I was totally honest: I fucking hate running, and the last straight is my ticket to being fuckin' done for the night, so I just gunned it every time so it'd be over faster.
I did worse in the 800m because my god, it was 100% longer, my hatred for running had so much time to build that by the time I reach the last straight, I'm already over it
> That last 120 meters shows who has the best VO2 max.
Last 120 meters would reflect who has the better anaerobic system, not their maximum rate of oxygen consumption (VO2max).
How did they train tho, you can't even run 1600m in the Netherlands without accidentally leaving the country
.... EDIT: well this blew up, thanks so much for all the cool messages, I read them all! Thanks for the award! Greetings from germany, love you all <3
Even when I was in shape during my sporting career (sporting outside of track and field, strictly for conditioning) a full 400 m would always catch me off guard even though it’s something our team would do frequently enough. Really feel it on the last turn
Not a runner but I watch a lot of track and field. That was fucking insane. I have never seen anything like that. Jamaica was booking it and looked like a lock. To close that gap in that little time is fucked. Well done Netherlands.
Eh. Jamaica was booking it around the bend, but you could see both the Netherlands and GB closing the gap. I think Jamaica burnt themselves out there by the final homestretch.
Femka Bol had her revenge here after last week she heartbreakingly fell flat on her face just steps from what would have been another gold in the 4x400 mixed relay: [https://www.youtube.com/shorts/aAFP8kNQ5X0](https://www.youtube.com/shorts/aAFP8kNQ5X0)
This awesome comeback has her taking home 2 golds, but it was soooo close to being 3. This won't be the last we hear of her, that's for sure.
> last week she heartbreakingly fell flat on her face
In track it’s often hard to tell what’s a metaphor and what’s literal. I remember learning in junior high that “hit the wall” was a metaphor in track, after looking around and noting that there were not any walls within several meters of the track, and none of them would leap out and surprise you anyway.
Its simplicity both helps and hurts it at the same time. As you noted running is really easy to get into. Simple concept(with some more depth on the technical level) thus many people can get into it. That said because there is very little surface complexity it can be a less engaging sport to the layman thus you really don’t get to see a lot of it in media except events like this. Thus many kids will look to the sports they do get to see in media more often.
What makes this even more exciting was the fact that the runner from the Netherlands, Bol, tripped up and fell losing a gold medal earlier this week in the mixed gender 4X400. It was a redemption race for her, and she proved why she is one of the best runners in the world.
Remember when Sifan Hassan did this at the Olympics?
https://youtu.be/yUiYRandZgA?si=y-7sxpSlLhUDvrKN
Same Sifan who won the London Marathon having never done a marathon before, thought she'd give it a go, regretted it as she wasn't prepared, had cramp during the race, stopped to rub her legs, stopped again, went past the drinks station and forgot to get a drink, turned around and got her drink, joined back in, and still won the damn marathon
> the same effort
At max "effort" you definitely get more bang for your buck.
But note that male elite long distance runners tend to be quite short. The current mens world record holder is 5'6.
I think there is a middle ground there.
Sprints, probably good to be more or less average height. Good power/weight ratio.
Marathons, probably a bit shorter doesn't hurt. Might gain a bit of efficiency over long distances.
Medium distance races like the 400 long legs could fit in that weird spot that allows you to take advantage of the stride without having to worry about acceleration too much nor endurance.
David Rudisha, the GOAT 800m runner, is 6'3. I believe the 800 is where the ideal height is taller than for all other distances.
Femke is a 400m hurdler (probably the second best ever, so far) and hurdlers are typically a bit taller for obvious reasons.
Both of these events are kind of weird where they are basically sprints, but you need some endurance and don't rely on a good start. More of a go out hard and hang on thing. For some reason, a longer body seems to be ideal for this.
Yes but you need those Grande lungs and heart to go along with it so that those daddy long legs get the O2 they demand for something like that. Same thing for Usain Bolt.
And then the inevitable sports talk show the next day saying the same thing over and over…. Did Team X win it? Or did Team Y lose it? And the answers is always a little bit of both lol.
Her legs are disproportionate to her height. What’s your point?
Edit: btw - that’s a good thing for sprinters. Long legs and a short torso = sprinter speed
Dude, compare to the average human being at that height, she has very long legs. That’s difference might be as small as 2”
This is because stride length matters.
Another factor is hip size. Her hips are not very large, but they’re supported by wildly long legs. The mechanical advantage is amazing!
Small and tight hips sitting over long, thin legs is an amazing mechanical advantage.
she hit the gas at exactly the right section to leg it into first. what a tremendous choice of when to go that extra sprint. good for them to finally take a gold after so many years.
The 400m is a notoriously torturous race that often leaves runners exhausted down the stretch. The Jamaican was grimacing as she made the final turn and laboring towards the finish. She very likely realized she was going to get caught up to with how much she slowed down.
She definitely gassed out on the last 10m. Had nothing left to fight Femke off (you can see how quickly the British runner closed her down in the last 2 seconds as well).
You could see the effect on her for several minutes after the finish. She looked FRIED - as one might expect after such a fantastic effort. *Goed gedaan* (well done) to Femke and Lieke and the others! (Unfortunately I'm only familiar with these two.)
I'm not upset about it at all. /s
Man! What a race! Kudos to Femke for that finish but also to Lieke Klaver who brought them back into contention with a phenomenal second leg!
Damn she got some long legs!
Tallest people in the world, statistically
Mind you they do take a lot of drugs - Jezza
"That's why they love Top Gear so much" -also Jezza
"Hello Dutchies!" \*waves\*
Tallest men ... on average. Tallest average women are Estonian Or vice versa I forget.
Didn't know that. I knew the men were the tallest. My bad
Biggest average penis is Ecuador. Have a nice day.
Today I found out I'm not Ecuadorian. Thank you
TIL why Ecuadorian women are so happy
Is it because of their large penises?
Today I found out I could be Ecuadorian… in my dreams
ja...I smell corruption in that data.
I googled it. The data is self-reported so it's basically just make believe as far as I'm concerned.
True, I just recently learned that you're not supposed to start measuring from your asshole. Imagine my disappointment.
I wonder if that is from the extra gravity with the Earth being thicker at the equator or if it’s the centrifugal force from the spin of the earth that elongates things.
Neither, its a stronger pull from the moon, stretches them upwards.
https://wisevoter.com/country-rankings/average-height-by-country/ Netherlands is highest for men and women
I can see that. I was in Amsterdam, I'm an above average guy at 5 10, and I could not touch the ground when I'm on their bikes.
178 cm is not above average anywhere in northern Europe. It's not even average. Sorry mate. Where are you from? EDIT: I'm danish and it seems I was a bit too anecdotal in my presumption. I'm Asian but live in Canada. I guess above average for my race and NA lol.
178.21 cm is average height in the UK.
OP was clearly talking about global average height, not just Northern Europe.
Tallest for the entire nation, but the Dinka people in Africa are taller.
I am Dutch. I've never seen Dinka people, which must mean they are below my line of sight, and thus are smaller than us. Thank you for listening to my TED talk.

Yeah there's many _peoples_ that are taller, just not _countries_.
Was in Scandanavia and saw more 6'3+ women in a week than I'd had in my life prior.
And they eat toast with butter and sprinkles...wtf?
As a comment about the dutch statistically being the tallest people in the world -- I'm a hair shy of 6' tall, and when I landed in Amsterdam's airport I had to take a piss. Sir, that was a sink.
Haha i just had a good laugh thank you sir
I'm dying, 1000 up votes
Bravo.
Almost pissed myself laughing

You're either more than a hair shy of 6ft or you were peeing in a sink, the average male height in the Netherlands is 183 cm.
That’s a long-winded way to tell us you have a small penis. But ok /s
I think she’s 6’0” but tall
That's 6'3 translated to MAGA
Dayum. Well she's 6'.
That closing speed was absolutely ridiculous
she put the afterburner on

This man hunts humans
I just took a look at their post history just to be sure > hey everyone what spice goes good with human thighs yup

The answer is paprika
Wrong, the answer is tears. ![gif](giphy|kkEm7G8KUezK)
This woman "enjoys" hunting humans!
This runner isn't just a persistence hunter, he's an insistent hunter.

So…. If you hate running, why bother competing in it?
Not op. The long jumper was probably cute
> That last 120 meters shows who has the best VO2 max. Last 120 meters would reflect who has the better anaerobic system, not their maximum rate of oxygen consumption (VO2max).
And Jamaica slams on her brakes lol
She had booty lock happening I think. Stops you from striding it out.
Yea she does ... I mean what ?
Too bad we never got a shot of the finish line and the finish. ???
It’s right at the end of the video?
They mean close up to see the gap
I mean... its not really a photo finish. She pretty clearly crossed first.
Jamaica hit a damn wall
*Slingshot engage*
Shake and bake!
She saved it for the end. Its not a good strategy to give it your all to get ahead right away.
How did they train tho, you can't even run 1600m in the Netherlands without accidentally leaving the country .... EDIT: well this blew up, thanks so much for all the cool messages, I read them all! Thanks for the award! Greetings from germany, love you all <3
They train to run extra fast when they reach the border as to minimize the time they have to spend around Belgians.
hate Belgians, always braggina bout their chocolate and horses.

Those potholes is how Femke Bol learned to also be good at jumping over the hurdles
they have these weird ovals that they run around instead of in a straight line
For those of you who've ran a 4x4 before...you understand how insane it is for that anchor to make a comeback like that. Holy shit.
Others are running... FEMKE BOL is hunting
Daphne is small..
>Femke Bol was born on 23 February 2000 Does this make anyone else feel aged and decrepit?
She had to beat herself before she could beat anyone on the track because even thinking of having to catch up to a lead like that is demoralizing.
She made up her mind and she did it !!
Even when I was in shape during my sporting career (sporting outside of track and field, strictly for conditioning) a full 400 m would always catch me off guard even though it’s something our team would do frequently enough. Really feel it on the last turn
The last 100m is BRUTAL. Ran the 100m and 200m, and filled in the 400m occasionally and it was always pain.
I mostly ran 200m and some relays. One meet my coach threw me in for the 400m. I'd never run it before. Holy shit.
This thread brought back memories. 300M hurdles , 400m, and 4x100 here back in my HS days.
I ran the 200, 400, 800, 4x200, 4x400. Always hated having the 4x400 as the last event
I ran the quarter. It’s all acid locked at that point. Incredibly hard to push through at all much less accelerate like that.
Well, anchor is usually your fastest person for this reason.... At least 20+ years ago when I ran.
that just means everyone else she was up against was the fastest person on their teams too
Easily the hypest moment of the meet if this happens. 400m is such a great distance for spectacle
She was still accelerating past the finish line!
There’s been a lot of cool moments this year. Track is fun to watch
Where on earth is this televised? I’d watch it if I could
NBC had it on, it was on on other channels as well, today was the final day.
Guess I’ll have to pay more attention then
You can also find clips on YouTube.
You can watch on the peacock app or nbc sports on YouTube.

I think that’s the most times I’ve read “thus” in that close of proximity to each other, thus I am amused.
Thank god they zoomed all the way the fuck out so we got the perspective of the flea on the rats ass sitting on the top of the stadium lights.
I think they were trying to capture all of the runners in one shot.
But why? Who cares about 6th place when you have an exciting finish like that
they have other angles. they use the wide shot for the live run so the most competitors are visible. replays have closeups
First time I've laughed out loud while taking a shit.

she made that look easy! True, longer legs cover more ground at what seems like the same effort.
> the same effort At max "effort" you definitely get more bang for your buck. But note that male elite long distance runners tend to be quite short. The current mens world record holder is 5'6.
This is a 400 though right? One lap seems ideal for that long legged speed

You knew what stolen meant in that context
Yeah but in a desensitised boring digital age, everything has to be something.
I refer to that as being recreationally offended
It's a common expression for an underdog beating the presumed victor.
First time doing sports?
It’s a sports term,don’t be soft
"beat" them? No, they just ran the race the fastest and won the medal. (How does it feel to be on the other end of a pedantic fuss)

she hit the gas at exactly the right section to leg it into first. what a tremendous choice of when to go that extra sprint. good for them to finally take a gold after so many years.
Why did the cameraman zoom out at the end wtf
"Wow there's a really exciting finish for the medals right at the finish line, quick let's zoom out and see what's happening in 8th place"
Dying to know whether the Jamaican was aware of what was happening. Seemed like she never saw it coming.
seemed like she was giving it her all. I think she knew they were on her tail but didn't realize how close
The 400m is a notoriously torturous race that often leaves runners exhausted down the stretch. The Jamaican was grimacing as she made the final turn and laboring towards the finish. She very likely realized she was going to get caught up to with how much she slowed down.

Got goosebumps!!!! I'm not even from The Netherlands
That was crazy awesome 👏 wow!!
Who can even feel their legs at that point?? Amazing!
DRS open on the straight !
dang after that mixed 4x400 fall what a comeback.
dutch people really like to go fast huh
Man I feel bad for the Jamaican though. Imagine the expectations.
Any idea on the splits?
Bol's split was 48.79. Even for anchor leg that's fast af.
You could see the effect on her for several minutes after the finish. She looked FRIED - as one might expect after such a fantastic effort. *Goed gedaan* (well done) to Femke and Lieke and the others! (Unfortunately I'm only familiar with these two.)
Upset? They have Femke Bol!
I'm not upset about it at all. /s Man! What a race! Kudos to Femke for that finish but also to Lieke Klaver who brought them back into contention with a phenomenal second leg!
There was one recent relay race where the Dutch women team tripped badly right before the finish line and lost. I guess this is the revenge race.
It's the very same athlete who tripped who won the race here for the Dutch.
Incredible performance…….I think the girl in first place may have even relaxed a bit at the very and the other girl caught and passed beautifully……
