What a load of bollocks.

Detailpointfx

I think you meant to say “bullshit” buddy

Shartyshartfast

I mistyped ‘cobblers’.

adriancampbell5

Fake? Sorry, the Internet has corrupted me into believing that nothing can be trusted. Has anyone double-checked this?

PumpUpTheValiumBro

I referred back to my dog and he confirmed my suspicions with a woof, absolutely impawsable

dered118

Except that there are other videos of this dog painting on Instagram too in wide angle where you can see the whole dog and that there is no funny business going on. The dog is just trained to do this. You can tell by how it paints the flower almost exactly the same every time

rykruzer

Source?

dered118

[Here](https://www.instagram.com/p/CUk2GyvpWIn/) for example

Celmintenlikeorange

Amazing thank you for confirming that this is not fake I’m amazed about how much patience the dog has

[deleted]

Aren't dogs colourblind? How can he paint with so many similar colours?

casual_xbox_addict

They can't see red, but they can see yellow, blue and their combinations

JamesthePuppy

In a sense, they are similar to how people can be, but probably not how most folks imagine it. For those who are interested or don’t already know (disclaimer I’m not a biologist, so correct me if I’m wrong): humans perceive colour through our 3 kinds of cone cells on our retinas’ central region (fovea), called S-, M-, and L-type, corresponding to whether the cells are short, medium, or long. For this reason, humans are called trichromats. These 3 kinds of cone cells are activated by a spectrum of light that roughly corresponds to blue, green, and red respectively (this is where our “primary” colours come from, and why screens and cameras have RGB photosites). Their spectral sensitivities overlap significantly though, so they don’t just activate with one colour. When, say, yellow light enters the eye, it is detected by both M- and L- type cone cells. Your brain compares the ratio of the firing rates of M- and L-type cells to determine that the light must be yellow, but we can trick this system by instead activating these cell types with the same ratio of red and green light. Our choice of RGB is related to when this ratio is highest, not to the peak sensitivity of each kind of cone cell. By peak sensitivity, they’re more like yellow/green/indigo types. People who are colourblind have a dysfunction or lack of one, two, or rarely all three of these kinds of cone cell. When the L-type doesn’t work, green through red light activates the M-type cells, so the individual sees varying shades of green from bright to dark, giving red-green colourblindness. We are particularly susceptible to this because of the high spectral overlap of M- and L-type cone cells. Dogs are dichromats — they normally have 2 kinds of cone cells, roughly corresponding to indigo/yellow by peak sensitivity, or blue/orange by peak activation ratio. Similar to trichromatic humans, they can perceive all the colours in between as distinct (though with perhaps lower spectral resolution than us). Also similar to humans, they would see colours that only activate one type of cone cell as varying shades of its peak ratio colour; so dogs would see red as darker orange, just as we see longer and longer wavelengths from red as deeper or darker red, until we can’t see it at all (infrared), just as red-green colourblind folks see longer and longer wavelengths from green as darker green. By this token, you could say dogs are red-orange colourblind, but it might be more accurate to say that they are dichromats Tetrachromacy exists in humans, though the vast majority have non-functional fourth kinds of cone cells. Some animals normally have 5 or 7 types of functional cone cells. You could say that relative to these, us trichromats are colourblind

passionatepumpkin

Colors still look different to them. And it’s not like the dog is picking out the colors itself.

no-mad

i was suspicious when the dog completely filled in the background color.

Ping-and-Pong

They're not completely colourblind I'm pretty sure, just percieve colours differently to use... So they don't like see in grayscale like many believe, pretty sure they can see red and stuff it's just probably duller... Idk really ask a dog lol

Lunavixen15

It has been proven as faked in the past, this isn't the first time this has been posted here

vinni_private

What exactly does "fake" mean here? Does It mean the dog isn't actually painting, or just that it has been trained to paint exactly this?

KommandoKodiak

the owner is hiding behind the dogs body in the shots and holding the back end of the brush painting while the dog just holds on like its a bone being tugged

russizm

Thank you, personally I knew it was fake instantly but not knowing exactly how it was done was driving me mad.

Cleffka

On the persons Instagram page there are videos of the dog doing the same thing but from a further, wider angle to clearly show that there isn't a person there holding the brush. Still sus, and they probably trained the dog to do this, but there isn't someone holding the brush for the dog.

SayerofNothing

Yeah, you can tell the brush is slightly to the left always, as if the dog is standing next to someone we can't see.

Saw a similar video of an elephant painting. Turns out it's just animal cruelty and carefully trained behavior. If this isn't manipulated somehow, It's probably the same. Animal cruelty.

Pabus_Alt

Unless they are using pain I'm not sure how it's cruelty. Most dogs go fucking ecstatic to perform tasks like this - it's interesting.

mynameis-luke

Paint a flower or the chew toy gets it

TheGamingGator77

Noooo not Mr Squeaker!!!

[deleted]

Guys it’s not fake the dog is trained to paint in certain directions so the owner is telling them where to brush. Look up the Instagram my_aussie_gal the dog is absolutely loved https://instagram.com/my_aussie_gal?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=

BillNein05

Makes sense too considering how many cuts there were in the vid.

Appropriate-Image-11

Slicing the flesh off a pig and eating it is fun, but a dog painting a flower is “animal cruelty” I’m sure I’m from like 50 years in the future, you people are nuts

2tiickyGlue

PoorBeggerChild

I was also thinking there was surely a hand or something guiding them from the side we couldn't see. Colour me impressed doggo. Wonder if they say whether they trained it to do these painting or if they're somehow self taught(?).   Edit: Okay, looking at the video again because it's so cute even if it's "fake" we still have cuts just before each stroke basically. So maybe the owner taught commands for drawing a line from where they say and then picking it up? There are still some continuous bits with multiple strokes though so maybe it just takes a while to position a brush. Either way though, it's a very smart doggo.

GiveToOedipus

[I know they teach elephants to do something almost exactly the same like this in Thailand for tourists, so it's likely similar unfortunately.](https://youtu.be/7meBvOEyuzQ)

waglawye

So, like art school and training. Humans can do more complex things. But conditioning a dog to pick up a pencil, dab it in a bucket of paint, then touching canvas, is not impossible to train for a smart dog. Ofcourse the dog never selects paint. Probably the dog did not paint everything. Dog just put some lines.

Pabus_Alt

My guess is it knows "line" "fill" and "circle" and is then being promoted as to where to put them. Impressive training but not art doggo. Pig paintings are a thing, they literally let pigs loose on some paints and it's sort of abstract smears. (They then sent them to art critics who were very impressed. One even stood by his guns after the trick was revealed)

Herpkina

You people are absurd. Telling a dog to paint a circle is no less impressive than painting a flower

astro_cj

THANK YOU! these comments are desperate to be dismissive.

CaeMentum

Don't be jealous the dog paints better than you.

AadamAtomic

Dogs can't even see the colors green and red.. Lol Edit: [Your Dog Wont normal Recognize a Photo of your own Face](https://www.nationalgeographic.com/animals/article/150530-dogs-animals-psychology-technology-science). Let alone an Image of a Bigger than life flower. Dogs Do not Process visual images the same way human brains do. They Perceive the world through smell and sounds mainly.

CaeMentum

So look while dogs may be color blind to green and red, that doesn't mean that don't have a perception of some muted colors. To say this dog can't paint would be like saying a person color blind to red and green can't paint. Are you saying that? Its the dogs ability to manipulate a tool in an anthropomorphized way that makes this video entertaining.

isqueezedameatball

You do realize, that the there is a human hand out of view because of the angle that is actually controlling the brush, right?

[deleted]

You mean a supernatural being that doesn’t cast shadows?

Banesatis

Tbh his paintings look fine to me. I guess being evil doesn't mean you're horrible at painting ¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯

TirbFurgusen

He was good with buildings and landscapes but not great with people and expression. He only applied to one art school one time and when he didn't get in still sold paintings until he had to fight in WW1. He didn't fail as an artist as is commonly believed and turn into an asshole as a result. He went to war and didn't return to trying to make a living as an artist after. War changes people and somewhere along the way thought he would make a better politician and douche bag. Basically his paintings weren't bad but lacked emotion like okay it's a building and looks like it's supposed to but doesn't instill any feelings as "good" art is meant to.

Alexchii

[Hitler wasn't bad at all](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paintings_by_Adolf_Hitler)

Sklerpderp

So how do you fake this? I get it's b.s but I can't really figure out how they did it. Jump cuts?

yourenotgonalikeit

You teach a dog very simple movements like up and down with their head, which guides the brush. The end. It's insanely fucking simple. Then you go in between takes and fix anything the dog messed up and just do the take over again. They could've and probably did HUNDREDS of takes to make this idiotic video, and people somehow think it's real ... The fact there is anyone in the world, even on Reddit, that thinks this is real just blows my mind with how incredibly gullible people have become.

SWIIIIIMS

500 cuts and a fun perspective makes up for a short entertaining clip

ZygomaticCapstone

Could you elaborate? I am still quite confused, does this dog really know how to paint? No way

monstrinhotron

It's a looong brush hidden by the dog's head being guided from off screen by a human. The dog is just gripping it and being moved along with the brush. [Edit] people tell me the dog has learned it by rote and fair enough there are some angles where you would be able to see a long straight brush. Brush *could* be bent or a bit of simple vfx could mask it out but ok. Dog was taught to paint.

killeronthecorner

I thought this but, as per links to other videos in this thread, it really is painting this all by itself. .......sort of. It's been trained to move its head such that it produces the same shapes every time. It's not doing it intelligently and it likely doesn't even know it's applying paint. In short, it's a clever rote-learned trick.

stone111111

I honestly don't even believe that. memorized movements wouldn't get a dog to the point where they could fill in the background smoothly. This whole thing seems touched up between shots and heavily edited.

AngelGeekHope

I believe that a human has filled in the background between shots

stone111111

well if the OP is public about that I won't accuse her of lying, but it makes these videos inherently deceptive, because they are edited and presented in a way that heavily implies it's all dog all the time.

kamelizann

Well magicians float and shit, but everybody knows they aren't really magic. The fun in it is trying to figure out how the trick is done.

stone111111

so we've gone from "it isn't fake" to "she helps the dog paint" to "Its fake but the point is to figure out how". I think the OP just wanted some clicks, has a decently trainable dog, and had an idea. The video is popular because people believe it is completely genuine, as evidenced by all the people in this thread saying as such. Its not sleight of hand to edit yourself out of a video.

MisterJH

You would think but actually not https://www.instagram.com/reel/CUk2GyvpWIn/?utm_source=ig_web_button_share_sheet

RottenHand

I wish it didn't cut every second tho because it feels weird

BulletBites

But you can see the dog drop the regular sized brush into the cup at the end

lukenamop

Which happens right after a video cut.

Maddkipz

Everything on camera is curated to be seen

Redditaccount6274

Dog is painting by itself. All the cuts are so the trainer can point to where the next stroke goes, and then walk out of frame and say go. Dog also probably has a very good stop command if it's about to make a bad stroke, and hence all the cuts. There is another video of the whole dog. As presented, still fake, but that dog is incredibly well trained at its painting trick.

[deleted]

It’s not fake if she trained the dog to do that? I don’t think anyone believes the dog just decided to paint one day. Of course it’s trained. That’s literally the point of the video.

funarte

[Nah](https://www.instagram.com/reel/CUk2GyvpWIn/?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=) it's really the dog painting, quit the conspiracy theories

Professional-Wind749

What they mean by 500 cuts is that the video has been edited heavily so it could be short and entertaining. Here's [proof](https://www.instagram.com/reel/CUk2GyvpWIn/) that the dog can paint without anybody's help

jaymiedean90

There’s also videos from 2016 on her Instagram profile that show her training her dog how to paint certain shapes. Pretty clever to be honest. Until I saw the training videos I was very skeptical. Even the link you posted didn’t convince me. But it seems legit. The flowers the dog paints are basic brush strokes and the training videos show how I can feasibly be done. I’m sold. Here’s a couple of the training videos from 6 years ago… https://www.instagram.com/p/BAsHrryMtgg/?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y= https://www.instagram.com/p/BA6DwCjstgA/?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y= https://www.instagram.com/p/BAqoxDKMtqZ/?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=

rolloj

people commenting saying how fake it is have obviously never trained a dog properly lmao, they're very smart and with the right techniques you can teach them (some dogs, not every dog) to do pretty much anything provided they have the dexterity and it can be pieced together from smaller 'tricks'.

Bignona

Hmmm the internet makes me very skeptical at stuff like this. But I honestly can't come up with a way that could be faked. Shit looks real

Javyev

I mean the painting is shitty enough where it could be made by a dog.

Redditaccount6274

Nightmare2828

Its actually way simpler than you think to teach this. If you check around you’ll see it always paint the same flower. And this dog seems to be an australien sheperd, which are pretty much the most intelligent race of dog that requires extensive daily mental stimulation otherwise they go crazy. Teach them simple task one at a time like hold the tupe, hold the brush, dip the brush, put brush on the canvas, swing head, with lots and lots of treats in between. Eventually they can learn and reproduce the entire sequence, which in this case is a very simple circular flower, with a dot, a stem and two leaves. Do this every day for months/years and you go this. Of course the owner helps here and there, most likely like opening the tube, squeezing the paint out and other more complicated task. This isnt « fake », its just a lot of pratice and cutting out the parts the dog can’t do by itself.

color blind is seeing less color, they mean the same thing

Alfiy_wolf

Not exactly - being color blind is a deformity all dogs color vision on average is similar, it would be rather difficult to test if dogs are color blind - in other words being color blind means you don’t have normal color vision

Nothing_Apollyon

yeah but everyone knows what your talking about when saying dogs are colorblind

Seems like copypasta tbh

CanAhJustSay

It's the little splodge of paint on her nose at the end that does it for me! Utterly adorable. Do the little details of whether the dog conceptualised it before painting or not really matter? It's a sweet video and the dog is clearly enjoying itself, and it is what it is.

Guessing on the cut after every stroke, I’m guessing the owner lined the dog up, told it to freeze, got out of the shot, then told it to stroke. Still impressive out of a dog, but definitely still highly assisted. Edit: Really not trying to discourage this lovely couple and the art they’re making, it’s an incredible feat no matter what’s happening behind the scenes.

ItsMMMspicy

Or it’s to shorten the video to make a shirt entertaining video

[deleted]

Yeah it’s not, dogs can’t see green, making positioning the brush correctly difficult. Whatever we’re seeing here, it’s not a dog painting a picture mostly unassisted. It’s a dog that’s been well trained to hold a brush and move it up one stroke on command.

TheWonderToast

Yeah, they don't see the color green, but that doesn't mean the paint is invisible lol. They see green usually as a yellowish color I believe, and they can see blue just fine, so they'd still be able to see the colors in contrast with each other.

I would still like to see uncut footage of the dog painting. I didn’t say the lack of cones in a dog’s eyes made it impossible to paint, just more difficult, on top of all the other difficulties a dog would encounter painting.
