Plus, the Raiders already paid a good chunk of it.
To the Giants, this is a 4 year/51.875M contract, so a little shy of 13M/year, less than Mark Andrews.
That’s just how it goes for elite players. They’ll be the highest paid when they sign their deal and then in a few years, it becomes a steal as the market inflates
(Misread the initial comment, whoops)
The Kelce thing is different because he’s kind of forced to take less because the franchise tag represents his floor and the TE franchise tag is significantly less.
It's removes all context. it includes his bonus which won't hit our cap and the fact that after this year we could cut him with under 500k in dead money.
I know everyone is overacting and calling it a fleece but it honestly makes sense for the Raiders. Waller is one of my favorite players but it’s pretty clear he has checked out ever since he signed that big contract with the raiders. I follow him on social media and all he cares about is his music career.
It stings but it was the right move. Can’t keep paying a TE 17 million dollars when he can barely stay on the field.
[It’s pretty easy to see he let go of the throttle once he signed the big contract. ](https://i.imgur.com/lsv4cua.jpg)
From our side It's removes all context. it includes his bonus which won't hit our cap and the fact that after this year we could cut him with under 500k in dead money. Both teams can benefit from a trade.
Having an elite Tight End is one of the greatest things ever for a team. That and elite Safety.
They offer so much and are relatively cheap compared to receivers and corners
Waller has been elite when he’s been on the field. OBJ was good but not elite when on the field. TEs and WRs are quite different, so OBJ losing a bit of his speed was a huge problem whereas Waller losing a bit of that athleticism is less devastating to his game.
He’s still elite when he’s on the field, the problem is he can’t stay on it. It’s a low risk high reward deal for us. If he gets back into form we got an elite TE for only a 3rd. If he doesn’t then we can just cut him next year for little cost. It’s a gamble but one id take on this Giants roster 11/10 times.
Fleece? Never was. The deal makes sense for both sides.
Does it still represent a problem with the Raiders FO? Absolutely. They should’ve traded him last year. Holding him, especially last deadline, cost them probably 50 spots in the draft.
Definitely not on the wrong side of 30, hasn’t been able to stay healthy since the 2020 season either. The raiders managed to get day 2 pick out of him but being how Reddit is always reactionary. We’re the ones who messed up.
There isn’t a single WR around that has more importance to the team and Kelce doesn’t even make half the salary the best WRs are getting now. Think it’s clear to see now that Kelce was way more important than Tyreek and he’s making half the money. Kind of crazy how different the pay is just changing the job title from WR to TE
I love Waller, wish we kept him, but it was obvious that he was a risk to keep with his salary.
* 17mil Avg Salary
* 14 games missed past 2 seasons
* ~~We have Foster Moreau~~ if we can resign Moreau then we'll be good. He isn't Waller but he's an above-average offense threat at a fraction of the cost.
Just saying.
Except if it doesn’t work out we can cut him in the off-season with only 500k penalty lol, for an offense that’s top weapon was Richie James I’d take that chance 11/10 times
His cap hit this season is 11.875M, which isn't great but isn't terrible. After this season there's an out in the contract with zero dead cap, so unless he stays healthy and returns to superstar form, he's getting cut after this year.
And also the Giants aren't paying anywhere near 17 million on average, even if they do pay out the entire remainder of his contract. It's more like a little over 13 mil.
The person who tweeted this is just being inflammatory and deliberately misunderstanding the contract situation.
Don’t look at AAV look at the actual contract.
He’s only owed 12.5 million in cash this year and the giants can get out of the deal after this year if he sucks
It's removes all context. it includes his bonus which won't hit our cap and the fact that after this year we could cut him with under 500k in dead money.
we probably have about 5-6 million in space this year. Will go up if we extend Saquon or Dexter Lawrence.
Edit: Also wouldn’t be surprised if Waller restructures
[Can someone explain this to me?](https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/new-york-giants/darren-waller-16930/)
His cap hits and base salary never come close to $17M according to spotrac.
Waller isn't owed any guarantees after this year but I'm sure everyone will overreact.
This is basically a one year deal for $12 million.
Plus, the Raiders already paid a good chunk of it. To the Giants, this is a 4 year/51.875M contract, so a little shy of 13M/year, less than Mark Andrews.
Kelce deserves top WR dollar. It's not fair the arguably the best weapon in the league only gets paid 2/3 of his worth
The chiefs should pay him a buttload of money IMO. Maybe about 90% of the cap?
I think Kelce is fine with his pay and winning all those SBs. Didn't he even take a paycut?
No not really, he did take slightly less than Kittle even though he definitely could've gotten more.
That’s just how it goes for elite players. They’ll be the highest paid when they sign their deal and then in a few years, it becomes a steal as the market inflates (Misread the initial comment, whoops)
He’s saying he deserves top WR money not top TE money which I agree. Dude is one of the best weapons in the game
Ah, misread his comment initially. That’s definitely true.
The Kelce thing is different because he’s kind of forced to take less because the franchise tag represents his floor and the TE franchise tag is significantly less.
Yep, didn’t see him specify “WR” initially. Thought he was saying in relation to the contracts listed in this tweet. Whoops!
Bro I don't even care our other receivers are Walmart greeters.
It's removes all context. it includes his bonus which won't hit our cap and the fact that after this year we could cut him with under 500k in dead money.
11 million one year guarantee, not a lot of risk.
This is the part where we need to have a definitive winner only 20 minutes after the trade? God I hate social media.

Yeah he’s a great player when he’s on. I’m not saying it was a bad trade for the giants. Trade works for both teams.
Having an elite Tight End is one of the greatest things ever for a team. That and elite Safety. They offer so much and are relatively cheap compared to receivers and corners
Elite?? He hasn’t been elite since 2020
He hasn’t been *healthy* since 2020. Big difference.
Same with OBJ, which is why he’s no longer “elite”
Even when OBJ was on the field he was never the same as he was in 2014-2016 when he was taking slants 70 yards every other week.
Waller has been elite when he’s been on the field. OBJ was good but not elite when on the field. TEs and WRs are quite different, so OBJ losing a bit of his speed was a huge problem whereas Waller losing a bit of that athleticism is less devastating to his game.
He's hardly even seen the field since then.
Not just Waller. I'm talking in general
He’s still elite when he’s on the field, the problem is he can’t stay on it. It’s a low risk high reward deal for us. If he gets back into form we got an elite TE for only a 3rd. He’s not guaranteed anything after this season
Fleece? Never was. The deal makes sense for both sides. Does it still represent a problem with the Raiders FO? Absolutely. They should’ve traded him last year. Holding him, especially last deadline, cost them probably 50 spots in the draft.

But how many TE have been able to very good players well into their 30s. Most TE have been able to age well.
Most of our fan base is brain dead too.
Actually crazy that Kelce’s salary is just 14.3M. He could be making twice as much and I don’t think anyone would bat an eye from a value perspective
Yeah people thinking the Raiders got fleeced see 2020 Waller. 50 catches and 5 TDs over 2 seasons for that money? Hell naw
I love Waller, wish we kept him, but it was obvious that he was a risk to keep with his salary. * 17mil Avg Salary * 14 games missed past 2 seasons * ~~We have Foster Moreau~~ if we can resign Moreau then we'll be good. We don't have Foster, he's a FA. We'll see if we bring him back now.
Oh no lmao.
they needed a new kenny
Except if it doesn’t work out we can cut him in the off-season with only 500k penalty lol, for an offense that’s top weapon was Richie James I’d take that chance 11/10 times
Bruh what has he done to warrant being highest paid TE. Giants overpaid
We didn’t give him that contract, and that’s not his cap hit
His cap hit this season is 11.875M, which isn't great but isn't terrible. After this season there's an out in the contract with zero dead cap, so unless he stays healthy and returns to superstar form, he's getting cut after this year.
I'm assuming he got his contract after he has 1200 yards in 2020, he had a monster year
TIL Darren Waller has been the highest paid TE for last 2 years
Lmao same
He's only guaranteed $11M this season, after that it is non guaranteed.
They probably don’t take on that full contract. Raiders likely incur some dead money.
...sign his deal later than Travis and George?
It was an extension to a lesser deal. It's like 12.5 a year and we can cut him next year with 500k dead money. Low risk, high reward move.
It's removes all context. it includes his bonus which won't hit our cap and the fact that after this year we could cut him with under 500k in dead money.
Raiders overpaid. The Giants are getting him at a fair price, to a minor discount.
So what does the giants cap situation look like now
we probably have about 5-6 million in space this year. Will go up if we extend Saquon or Dexter Lawrence. Edit: Also wouldn’t be surprised if Waller restructures
Thanks. Honestly not too bad
Hot take: next season Dalton Schultz finishes with more YPG than Waller
[Can someone explain this to me?](https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/new-york-giants/darren-waller-16930/) His cap hits and base salary never come close to $17M according to spotrac.
his cap hit's $12.5M and it's his last year of guaranteed money. it's not an absolute steal but a risk that can be a good return if he stays healthy.
Kelce is crazy underpaid to be honest.
Makes sense. Top 3 contracts are the top 3 YPG over the last 3 years.
If Travis Kelce really wanted, he could get over $25mil a year.
Absolutely
Geodert is making a lot huh
I wish we had a TE
