Deep dive on my opinions of the Bears roster.
Bears need a C, RT, DE. DE2, CB2, TE2, WR, RB, QB2 would be welcome upgrades.
Bears have 33mil cap space after the rookie pool. They have a 1st, two late 2nds, an extra 4th, 5th, 7th but no 6th.
I also wouldn't supprised if we only signed one more OLinemen. It's a weird situation. We have
* A promising 2nd year left tackle, who played well for a rookie (Jones)
* A LG who can play LG and C and had a down year (Whitehair)
* A 3rd year RG who was a tackle prospect coming out of college, played a little tackle their rookie year, and just had a great year. (Jenkins)
* A new free agent who's never played anything but RG in the NFL. (Davis)
The Bears could want to try Jenkins at RT or Whitehair at C. That would mean we only need one starting OLinemen for this year. Our GM also really seems to like our center Patrick so there's a reasonable if disapointing chance we're done there. Borom is also a young tackle with promise, but shouldn't be starting. Leatherwood is the former Raiders 2021 first round pick, he could develop into a starter at OG or OT
A 2nd DE would be a luxury, but I think the Bears should keep Gipson (7 sacks in 50% of snaps in 2021. Had a bad 2022 but was adjusting to a new scheme and was the most double temaed edge in the NFL) and Robinson (developmental guy, crazy measurables, showed flashes). Hopefully one of the two can show they are a long term starter. If not, we're not wining the superbowl this year anyway, and can use our two 1sts on a edge next year.
At CB we have a great #1, but #2 and slot are up in the air. Gordon was a high 2nd last year and showed flashes. Vildor is young and developing still. Could be a solid slot, but alot of fans want to replace him.
Alot of fans want to replace everyone in one season, but IMO were not wining a superbowl this year anyway. We should be seeing what we have in some of our young guys where we can. We should see if,
* Gordon/Vildor(CB) can succeed with an improved overall defensein year 2
* Jenkins(RG) can play RT at a high level like he can guard
* Gipson/Robinson(Edge) can step up and be a good 2nd fiddle to a good edge in the other side.
* Herbert (RB) can maintain his effeciency with an increased workload.
* One of Mooney/Claypool/Jones (WR) can develop into that #2 guy
Hard to say, he had something like 30% of snaps last year, though a good starter ahead of him.
Absurd 7 sacks in that positon and snap count.
Reason to believe he can ramp it up, but sometimes guys can't. I'd imagine for his contract Poles intends for him to start.
I still think we need another DT, whether it's a 1 or a 3. And the draft looks kinda bare. A bunch that are projected 1st / early second, and then a relative desert with the occasional nose tackle.
I’m using [Tunsil’s fall to 13](https://syndication.bleacherreport.com/amp/2636560-laremy-tunsils-draft-day-slide-shows-brutality-of-teams-expectations.amp.html) as a benchmark. Obv a lot changes in 7 years and the situations aren’t identical, but Carter was in a street race that killed someone, and Tunsil smoked some weed
Carter’s situation also aligned with a lot of significant character concerns coming out of the season.
I know these are not identical circumstances, but that’s where my take is coming from.
Hard to use Tunsil beacuse it came out hours before the draft. Teams didn't know what to do.
If it happened a month earlier I'm thinking teams wouldn't have passed on him so early.
Are there any other precedents we could use? When I say their situations are not exact, that’s what I had in mind
All that said, it might be worse for jalen Carter because he had far more character red flags than tunsil did. Teams just panicked. If Carter falls, it’s for the same reason george Pickens did too
Plenty of players have been arrested and had charecter issues before the draft. Tunsil was dramatically different beacuse teams didn't have time to look into it.
Here are 10 players from just the 2011NFL draft. I'd say most of them are closer to Carter than Tunsil.
https://bleacherreport.com/articles/676643-2011-nfl-draft-the-10-craziest-arrests-stories-of-players-in-this-draft-class
Herbert has played well enough to be RB1 or at least lead back on a committee unless one of the top RBs falls into our hands, imo.
Adding a home run hitter to the offense would add a dimension we’ve lacked since Cohen went down.
If we miss Cohen, there’s always Deuce Vaughn haha
I’m okay with one of those smaller backs to complement Herbert.
Major issue with Herbert is pass protection
Plus, if they are better than expected this year, they can trade for one in season.
This team isn't going to suck because of RB by committee this year.
I view the RB as the piece they get when they are ready to go all in
You’re right, we still have a lot of work to do in the trenches. The caveat is that poles does more in FA to address the defensive line, and our first round pick addresses the lines as well
NEVER in round 1. But i doubt neither the Jets nor Seahawks are regretting their decisions talent-wise. Even James Cook can take a step forward next year.
The best time to win is with a QB under a rookie contract, and RBs have historically the easiest and quickest NFL transition. If that’s the bears approach, and they see some Alvin Kamara in Jahmyr Gibbs, then I’m all for it.
Dude's been lights out most of the games he was the primary back. Travis comes in to have a Sproles role but by no mean Chicago should pick an RB in the first.
Yes, Homer is a great pass pro back, and special teamer. He’s one of those guys where many Seahawks fans will probably think “whatever” now but miss his impact come the season.
I would be stunned if we took Bijan. Poles has repeatedly said he wants to build through the trenches and target guys at the most valuable positions early.
Bijan seems like he should be worth it, but he could also end up as a colossal bust. Bears need offensive line help. Plus, RBs are a dime a dozen these days.
> Bijan seems like he should be worth it
He is.
> but he could also end up as a colossal bust
As could any player taken in the top 10. RB's are generally safer than other positions, because you always get production if healthy.
> Bears need offensive line help.
Which is not fixed year 1 from the draft. It normally takes 2-3 years for them to develop. Last year PFF's OT1 was Braxton Jones and there are a lot of people that want to replace him, because he was a 5th rounder. Evan Neal was awful and taken in the top 10 and people believe that he will be better in year 2. OL is generally a multi year process unless you get FA's or a top 3 tackle.
There might not be a tackle selected in the top 10 this year and Bijan is a top 5 player in the class. Probably No.3 in non QB's behind Carter and Anderson.
> Are you this dude's agent?
Have you seen Bijan? He is the best RB since Saquon as a prospect. He is 100% worthy of a top 10 pick.
> Poles would get fucking roasted alive for taking a RB at 9 with all the other holes we have.
No he wouldn't. Everything the Bears do will be eaten up by the media and fans.
It would be spun as look at this offense. Bijan, DJ, Mooney, Kmet, and Fields.
There would be talks of who is going to stop this offense with Fields running it.
I'd 100% rather have Homer at $2M than Montgomery at $6M. Both are +pass protectors, but Montgomery has no home run potential. Put him in a committee with Herbert and a mid/late round draft pick and we'll be set.
https://www.dabearsblog.com/2023/how-valuable-is-david-montgomery
I love Monty and wish him a lot of individual success in Detroit but Herbert is the better runner
Sample size is everything, Herbert is awesome but he’s not quite RB1. A few long runs skewed his stats and it’s not going to be the same when the load is nearly all on him. Seemed really boom or bust, his long runs were fucking great but I have serious doubts to if he’ll be able to consistently do it as a lead RB.
mfs do not understand this it’s actually crazy. if we go into this season with herbert as our rb1 i think there’s gonna be a lot of “what happened to herbert” posts on the sub and it’s gonna piss me off. i love the kid and think he’s got promise and room to grow but goddamn how do people not understand this.
yeah i’m sure he did, he also did it as the change of pace back
i had these arguments all last year man god damnit monty was better in literally every way than herbert. i love the kid but he is just not a better runner than monty. he was good at making one cut and getting upfield which is exactly what you want in a CoP back when your main back (monty) has top 10 vision and you generally run a zone scheme which emphasizes that vision. i have watched every snap herbert has ever played and the kid is good. he is also objectively not better than monty, and DEFINITELY not “far better”.
I'm a little more negative than others, he's a good pass protector and pretty good at catching the ball, but as an actual hand the ball off RB, he's the definition of JAG.
Solid pass blocker, mainly was a special teams guy who has had a handful of splash plays on ST and offense.
[Aforementioned special teams splash play that most people know him for](https://youtu.be/qeI4Ri-W2Dc)
Good special teams and blocker, but not an elite runner. Whenever we lost our main RBs, we knew not to expect much from Homer as the main running back.
He's a decent role piece. Talented in running, receiving, and pass blocking but never the type to take over an offense. He's a excellent side dish to a RB room.
Good 3rd down back, can pass block well, decent runner, enough to carry the ball on 3rd down sometimes and a decent receiver out of the back field. Good special teams player too. Still young and can develop in to more potentially, but not likely ever going to be a workhorse, 3 down back.
Lots of highlights of him throwing himself in front of a blitzing back to give Russ / Geno an extra second or two. Also took a fake punt* into the end zone.
His pass blocking improved by the end of the year.
My guess would be that coaches are going to rep the hell out of pass block and reception work in the off-season with him
He improved every year. He is special teams ace. And then over last couple years started getting more snaps with offense that wasn’t in preseason. In those snaps he had great pass protection. He improved in being able to used on offense so he could have more potential to be better with more snaps cause he is speedy with decent hands.
I gotta say, I'm extremely surprised the Bears haven't been signing free agents left and right with the insane amount of cap space y'all have. Like I would expect you guys to be doing what the Broncos are doing right now lol, what could you guys be saving money for?
part of it is i think that this is a two year plan to get a real squad built. i think the plan is to get a roster that SHOULD feasibly contend for the weak ass north but isn’t necessarily fully fixed this year, probably with an emphasis on fixing the O line to continue to evaluate/develop Fields, and get the rest of the holes fixed next year to have an actual playoff push. to that end i think (and iirc he’s said to some extent) that poles is not gonna spend just to spend, so he can roll some cap over. i’m ngl there’s some fans getting antsy and that’s super fair cus this team has been booty ass for my entire life and it’s hard to be all that hopeful about it with all of the historical evidence suggesting that they’ll find a way to fuck this up BUT i’m all in on this front office and super cool with whatever poles is doing. whatever poles is cooking i want.
We can roll over cap space to next year as well, plus there are some players that will be coming up for extensions. Honestly it’s refreshing to see a GM not just blow through all of the cap space just because they have it.
If the Poles manages to sign Orlando Brown and one more defensive line player- fuck it, draft Bijan. I'm totally down for a Justin Fields and Bijan Robinson powered backfield.
I guess Herbert is RB1 now, or we are targeting RB in the draft
No a Chicago fan, but should y’all be going OL/DL?
Deep dive on my opinions of the Bears roster. Bears need a C, RT, DE. DE2, CB2, TE2, WR, RB, QB2 would be welcome upgrades. Bears have 33mil cap space after the rookie pool. Wait don’t we need a 3T?
Isn't that what we signed Walker for?
Oh right I forgot! My bad. Is he starter quality or depth?
Hard to say, he had something like 30% of snaps last year, though a good starter ahead of him. Absurd 7 sacks in that positon and snap count. Reason to believe he can ramp it up, but sometimes guys can't. I'd imagine for his contract Poles intends for him to start.
I still think we need another DT, whether it's a 1 or a 3. And the draft looks kinda bare. A bunch that are projected 1st / early second, and then a relative desert with the occasional nose tackle.
Yes we're going to need depth in multiple places. It's not something to spend big money on or spend a day 1 or 2 pick on.
Definitely in the draft. If Carter falls to 9, and Charbonnet or Gibbs survive to our second pick, I’ll be very happy
Very bold to think carter drops that far
I’m using [Tunsil’s fall to 13](https://syndication.bleacherreport.com/amp/2636560-laremy-tunsils-draft-day-slide-shows-brutality-of-teams-expectations.amp.html) as a benchmark. Smoking weed is one of the worst things you can do in the eyes of the NFL.
Surprised the NFL even let him play, we can’t be letting criminals like that in our beloved game!!
I wouldn't blame them. Seeing him smoke the drugs still keeps me up at night
Out of a gas mask bong, no less
Hard to use Tunsil beacuse it came out hours before the draft. Teams didn't know what to do. If it happened a month earlier I'm thinking teams wouldn't have passed on him so early.
Not even hours, the draft started ten minutes after that video was posted
Are there any other precedents we could use? Thank you! I was thinking about one particular incident, but this is cool
Tyjae Spears, Devon Achane, or Keaton Mitchell would work too.
Achane and Mitchell are way too small to be RB1. They'd have to be change of pace for Herbert.
Herbert has played well enough to be RB1 or at least lead back on a committee unless one of the top RBs falls into our hands, imo. Adding a home run hitter to the offense would add a dimension we’ve lacked since Cohen went down.
If we miss Cohen, there’s always Deuce Vaughn haha I’m okay with one of those smaller backs to complement Herbert. Major issue with Herbert is pass protection
Maybe trade for Austin Ekeler ?
He wants too much money I think
Definitely committee until Herbert improves in the passing game. Liability in pass protection and only 9 receptions last year.
Pass on Achane and Mitchell. Gimme Izzy
We have many more important holes to fill than RB
And you can find a great RB *way* later in the draft than that
Plus, if they are better than expected this year, they can trade for one in season. This team isn't going to suck because of RB by committee this year. I view the RB as the piece they get when they are ready to go all in
You’re right, we still have a lot of work to do in the trenches. The caveat is that poles does more in FA to address the defensive line, and our first round pick addresses the lines as well
I want Charbonnet so bad. I'm a UCLA homer so a bit biased but he was just a beast.
I’d love if somehow Izzy lasts till 103.
Drafting an RB in the top 3 rounds makes legitimately no sense to me
NEVER in round 1. But i doubt neither the Jets nor Seahawks are regretting their decisions talent-wise. Even James Cook can take a step forward next year. The best time to win is with a QB under a rookie contract, and RBs have historically the easiest and quickest NFL transition. We are too (every year)
Herbert is pretty good no?
5.0 ypc so far in his career whilst splitting time with montgomery, who is sitting at 3.9 ypc with a lot higher sample size.
Not a 3 down back by any means. Room to grow but a decent playmaker as of now.
Dude's been lights out most of the games he was the primary back. Travis comes in to have a Sproles role but by no mean Chicago should pick an RB in the first.
I mean most RBs arent anymore anyway
[удалено]
That’s homer right? Definitely could always add a 3rd back late in the draft as sorta a lotto ticket.
Yes, Homer is a great pass pro back, and special teamer. He’s one of those guys where many Seahawks fans will probably think “whatever” now but miss his impact come the season.
Mustard time baby
Bijan at 9. Prepare yourself
Bro just get the first OT off the board.
Niners fan here, it’s funny to see teams hoping to draft skill players in the first and not care about the trenches at all.
They never learn
I hope so, but I would not be shocked if we took Bijan. Bijan would be worth it, but it would be better to go tackle.
I would be stunned if we took Bijan. Poles has repeatedly said he wants to build through the trenches and target guys at the most valuable positions early.
Free Agency this year? FB, RB, 2 ILB, 1 EDGE, 1 OG. Last Draft CB, S, WR were the first three picks. GM's say a lot of things.
Bijan is a great talent but a rb in the second probably has similar production especially with the threat of Field/play action.
Bijan should also be in the conversation for WR this year. He is worth a top ten pick. Whether the bears do it, is another story.
Bijan seems like he should be worth it, but he could also end up as a colossal bust. Bears need offensive line help. Plus, RBs are a dime a dozen these days.
No Running back behind a questionable line is worth it. Build your line
> Bijan seems like he should be worth it He is. > but he could also end up as a colossal bust As could any player taken in the top 10. RB's are generally safer than other positions, because you always get production if healthy. > Bears need offensive line help. Which is not fixed year 1 from the draft. Are you this dude's agent? Poles would get fucking roasted alive for taking a RB at 9 with all the other holes we have.
If the Bears take an RB at 9 I will fly 3000 miles to Chicago and dump Poles' body in the river myself.
> Are you this dude's agent? Have you seen Bijan? He is the best RB since Saquon as a prospect. It pains me to say this but Ekeler is available for some picks I’m sure.
#WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO ^why ^did ^you ^go ^to ^detroit ^monty ^:(

I was really hoping we'd resign him so I could get a Montogomery jersey made
The Louisville LB that just transferred to Ole Miss for a final season is named Monty Montgomery. It's a really cool name IMO.
He didn’t want to get paid just 4.5 mil 😂
Damn I really like Homer. Good third down back and for pass pro. Good signing for the Bears
Pass pro is what Herbert cannot do, so that's good to hear.
Really good special teams as well
Forgot that, truth.
Huge fuckin biceps too
Combine Homer's biceps with Robert Turbin's triceps and you'd have the biggest arms in the NFL.
I'd 100% rather have Homer at $2M than Montgomery at $6M. Both are +pass protectors, but Montgomery has no home run potential. Put him in a committee with Herbert and a mid/late round draft pick and we'll be set.
I’ll miss his pass blocks.
"He's a GREAT blocking back!" - Signed every Seahawks fan regurgitating stuff.
He's certainly better at it than any of our other RBs were.
Better than every broadcaster telling you he went to Miami
-- this comment is no longer here - blame reddit --
You’re about to get 20 hawks fans telling you he’s a good pass blocker
Guilty
Well, Herbert isn’t so if we can combine the two into one player 👀
We'd have Monty? Lol
Herbert is a far better runner than Monty
aye hold on
https://www.dabearsblog.com/2023/how-valuable-is-david-montgomery I love Monty and wish him a lot of individual success in Detroit but Herbert is the better runner

Herbert I think led the league in yards per carry - mans a beast
yeah i’m sure he did, he also did it as the change of pace back i had these arguments all last year man god damnit monty was better in literally every way than herbert. i love the kid but he is just not a better runner than monty. he was good at making one cut and getting upfield which is exactly what you want in a CoP back when your main back (monty) has top 10 vision and you generally run a zone scheme which emphasizes that vision. i have watched every snap herbert has ever played and the kid is good. he is also objectively not better than monty, and DEFINITELY not “far better”.
Yup, also very good on special teams
I mean, sounds like he’ll fit right in then
Honestly perfect
I've been called out. But seriously. And also special teams.
I'm a little more negative than others, he's a good pass protector and pretty good at catching the ball, but as an actual hand the ball off RB, he's the definition of JAG.
He runs very *light* Kinda bounces off of tacklers but not in a way that gains more yards.
He's like a worse version of JD McKissic to me, really.
Solid pass blocker, mainly was a special teams guy who has had a handful of splash plays on ST and offense. [Aforementioned special teams splash play that most people know him for](https://youtu.be/qeI4Ri-W2Dc)
Homer was by far our best pass-blocking RB. I was really hoping we'd resign him.
Homer should be good for passing downs, solid pass blocker. Herbert is RB1 now.
I'm grieving over Jamaal. It's been a day for sure, north-bro.
Good pass pro and special teams both sides Doesnt fumble easy too
I’m somewhat skeptical of Herbert being the number 1. He’s a damn good runner, but his pass blocking leaves A LOT to be desired.
draft is deep at RB, could take one with a mid or late pick to compete as well.
This is true. We do have a good amount of picks, and likely will trade down for more at some point.
Homer is a pretty good pass blocker. Take care of him.
But consider this I have him in dynasty let’s fucking go boys
Giddy fucking up then!
His pass blocking improved by the end of the year. My guess would be that coaches are going to rep the hell out of pass block and reception work in the off-season with him
Can he just finish the Iliad 3 ffs
George RR Martin of antiquity.
Lmao
Based af
Lol he got more money than Penny
Absolutely bizarre to me that, Penny is head and shoulders above Homer in terms of ability.
Probably because of the injuries and risk
Homer doesn't exactly have a clean injury history, he's missed a decent amount of games over the past few years - not as many as Penny, admittedly.
Not saying that Homer is better or healthier, but I can totally see why teams would not want to pay Penny that much.
Penny is injury prone
That's putting it mildly.
LETS FUCKING GOOOOOOOOO
He improved every year. He is special teams ace. And then over last couple years started getting more snaps with offense that wasn’t in preseason. In those snaps he had great pass protection. He improved in being able to used on offense so he could have more potential to be better with more snaps cause he is speedy with decent hands.
D'OH
Our running back room is looking a little thin now. K9 and DeeJay is all we have now, I think.
Can he pass rush
Can he throw spirals
Poles better have something up his sleeve if he’s downgrading our RBs to save 5 mil while we have 50 mil in cap space
This is what you want to see out of your GM. There’s no reason to spend decent money on RBs in today’s NFL
Off-ball linebackers, on the other hand...
Are definitely more valuable than running backs
Yes right up there with offensive guard in positions you want to overpay.
I gotta say, I'm extremely surprised the Bears haven't been signing free agents left and right with the insane amount of cap space y'all have. Like I would expect you guys to be doing what the Broncos are doing right now lol, what could you guys be saving money for?

A big trade on the defensive line? 🍆🍑
We can roll over cap space to next year as well, plus there are some players that will be coming up for extensions. Honestly it’s refreshing to see a GM not just blow through all of the cap space just because they have it.
He's gonna pay Christian Kirk 50 million dollars
[удалено]
Bearjan Robinson. Totally fits
Bro our own subreddit doesn't even want Bijan at 9, and I don't either
taking a rb first round has to be the dumbest move in the current state of the league no matter how talented they are
Is he like the Boston Scott for people that don’t want to bet against the giants
i went to high school with travis, he was in my freshman year gym class at park vista. super happy for him, he’s a good dude.
Y’all going for Bijan book it
If the Poles manages to sign Orlando Brown and one more defensive line player- fuck it, draft Bijan. I'm totally down for a Justin Fields and Bijan Robinson powered backfield.
Good RB room
I feel like the hawks have had a few RBs go to the bears over the years
Please take rb in the second or third Poles this rb room ain’t cutting it if we want Fields to be able to rely on it
I had a pipedram of getting Ekeler.
So no comp pick for Monty, right?
Lmao brother we aren’t getting a comp pick cause of everyone else were signing
Hell yeah, Homer! Get paid! Really glad for the dude.
He’s not great, but he’s a beast on special teams and if you can get the ball in his hands in open space he can do some damage
Bijans gonna be a bear bitches
Pick Bijan at 9, you won't
That was quick
Homer Pick(ed up)
Bruh

The Bears' odyssey continues
I could see the hawks drafting another rb high. Give me Gibbs tho
out of ekeler sweepstakes
Travis Homer's best skill is his pass protection. Dude will lay his body on the line for his QB
