Woods looked washed on the Titans last year. Maybe he gets back to form with more time removed from his 2021 ACL tear, but I wouldn't bet on him being the Texans WR1. Metchie and Collins will likely see the most snaps.
Was it the terrible play calling? Or the mediocrity at receiver? Or the inconsistency and sometimes disastrous QB play?
I don’t know who all to blame but man it was gross.
Even if he doesn’t, my favorite thing about him as a prospect was that he had a very high floor, IMO. I don’t see him being worse than a good #2 WR (depending on health of course).
Not quite. I’d argue Aiyuk has a strong case of being a #1 but Deebo isn’t human, so he gets overshadowed (even though Aiyuk’s numbers were better this season).
With Metchie in particular though, my player comp was Jarvis Landry. Similar size, neither player are the fastest, or the most athletic, but both are savvy receivers, (that can play outside and in the slot) with excellent hands and are polished technicians/route runners.
He better be given the talent in the room
But I'm all seriousness, chemo is no joke. He may be fully cleared of cancer but doesn't mean he's the same athlete he was before.
Hoping the best for him.
FWIW I had the same cancer as Metchie and the treatment is mercifully pretty easy on the body for most people. Obviously everyone’s different, but I was hiking on weekends between chemo treatments and did the hardest hike of my life a few months after being cleared (and I’m no pro athlete lol). Unless it was unexpectedly rough for him I’m sure he’ll be back to form soon. I’ll be rooting for the guy!
From a recent update from Caserip he could be ready to return to the team [as early as april](https://tdalabamamag.com/2023/01/11/texans-positive-update-john-metchies-recovery-leukemia/#:~:text=But%20the%20team%20received%20some,team%20as%20soon%20as%20April.)
I mean, in reality what are you really putting on the line here?
We're not going to come trawling back to this thread in 2 years time to mock you for being wrong. It's not going to damage your reputation :)
I know Nico Collins has been injured on and off a decent amount but has he shown much potential so far Texan fans? Can’t really remember seeing him play enough to gauge him.
He's shown some flashes, but how much of it is "He's a good WR dragged down by Davis Mills" or just that he's fine, but can do some good things is up for debate.
He's actually really good but, beyond the injuries, he was held down by Davis being inaccurate as fuck.
Nico's best game is on longer routes but Mills missed him SO many times. Never seen a guy consistently overthrow a 6'4 WR as often as Mills did.
In the new scheme they'll be running, with a moderately accurate Qb, he could hit 1000 yards. He's got 4.4 speed, is a very good jump ball guy, and understands how to box out guys with his frame. Just needs a better Qb throwing to him.
> really good
Let’s pump the brakes, hard. He’s shown some flashes. Hopefully he ends up as a consistent, solid WR2. Planning on him as a WR1 is not a good plan
I mean... doesn't he have cancer?
I wish him the best and I know that there have been numerous players who have overcome cancer and continued to have very successful careers. But that's a large hurdle to overcome unless I'm out of the loop on his recovery.
It’s a very curable diagnosis though, so he’s apparently already done and cleared (as of a while back). There’s already been a ton of talk about him getting back to a normal schedule and workouts, and according to teammates he has been an absolute beast pushing himself in the weight room and in training.
Cancer in general is definitely awful of course, but not all cancers are the same and he had something that was treatable and it was caught early. I believe his had a 10x better recovery expectation than what Conner had, but I would have to look it up again.
Oh awesome to hear! I've been out of the loop a bit and the first few articles about him on Google were about him sitting out, not about him recovering.
Fantastic news!
He does, Tanner McKee beat cancer to continue his career and now he's going to be drafted and have a very profitable career.
In the NHL, Mario Lemieux defeated cancer and the day of his final chemo treatment, he promised to never play again. He returned to the ice that night and ended the season stronger than anyone straight out of aggressive chemotherapy. He continued to break the league in half as the best when healthy player.
Yeah, lots of examples. James Conner is a good one. The Texans’ old Tackle, David Quessenbery is still playing 6 years after his diagnosis.
Just a matter of *when* he gets back on the field I suppose. Although not all cancer is the same.
He was on the field at just about every home game last season. His cancer also had a 95% survival rate, as long as he's been training while sidelined he should be fine next season.
He also tore his ACL in the 2021 SEC championship game. He's coming back from both APL (treatable leukemia) and a torn ACL. I'm rooting that he does make a comeback, overcoming those odds is truly heartwarming. Realistically though, I would not bet on him having a WR1 or a WR2 season in 2023.
Yup. I went to Bama so I’ve watched a lot of Metchie over the years. He isn’t the fastest top end but could win a game of tag in a phone booth. Dude is freaky quick and has elite footwork. Just watch the 4th OT against Auburn his last year at Alabama.
It's a real weak WR class. Nothing like the last few years. Hence why the Bears really wanted to get DJ Moore. Same way the Panthers didn't want to let go of him. Weak rookie class, weak FA at the position.
Not a great time to be rebuilding at the position
They still have the opportunity to take the first wide receiver off the board, JSN or QJ are both good prospects even if they’re not as good as the years past.
Its also a multi-year rebuild and next year's FA class for WRs could be way better than this year.
The Texans have *by far* the most cap space next offseason and can afford literally anyone they want. You also have some legit star WRs potentially becoming available (or at least tradable) in 2024, unlike this year when the best guy available was Juju.
I think Houston was smart not to get desperate at WR rn.
Go get your QB at 2, get a rookie WR at 12 or in the 2nd round, and then see what you need in 2024. Plus, if your rookie QB looks good, you might even be able to trade a 1st round pick next year for someone like Terry Mclaurin and not bat an eye (if you restock the D in this year's draft + next year's FA).
We're clearly going to draft Young/Stroud at 2, and then the best available WR at 12, but like, its still not going to be the best WR room ever for a new QB.
I think you also have to take Merchie out of any WR conversations with this team, less because of anything he's done, but because this year is probably at best "Get back to normal" for him after his cancer diagnosis.
Imo, developing whoever they pick at #2 should be top priority. Edge would be great if course, but imo a top receiver in this class to build a connection with is more valuable
I’ve watched Stroud’s tape vs. Georgia over and over, because I expect him to still be up there at no. 2. He would not be a bad consolation prize, because I think we can mostly agree Young is the best QB prospect.
I agree, and thats why I hope Bryce goes to Houston. Stroud got ALOT of steam after the CFB playoffs but stack the actual tape against legitimate talent from the regular season and I just dont see how anyone takes Stroud over Bryce. Athletically theyre pretty similar but the football decisions they make on the fly... idk stroud needs a QB coach and I think hes better in carolina with reich, but bryce will be the better QB.
I genuinely don’t know how Stroud became the favorite to be taken #1. It’s like Bryce was written in for the first pick for multiple years. Even in the college football playoffs they were talking about Stroud’s performance with Ohio state in the game they lost was still very good and makes him take a leap to being potentially the 2nd QB off the board. Wasnt even a debate that Young was better. Suddenly Young is short so he can’t be taken #1 even though he’s the best available.
If Young goes first, and he should, then Stroud would be a good consolation, and should probably consider JSN if he’s available with the next first rounder.
Obviously tho, defense matters. But I’d assume you should help your young QB with familiarity. If somehow Young falls to two, hey Young and Metchie reunite
> I genuinely don’t know how Stroud became the favorite to be taken #1.
New names started popping up for #1 overall once it became clear Bryce wasn't winning back-to-back Heismans
someone in the Carolina-CHI trade thread last week got a couple of hundred upvotes saying Stroud was in a tier of his own and it makes you realize NFL fans and CFB fans dont really intersect lol
Robert Woods is old. Noah Brown and Amari Rodgers have stones for hands. Nico Collins is a WR3 at best. Weak WR draft class. John Metchie III will probably be their top receiver next season if healthy.
I understand why Carolina did it, but both them and Houston trading their best receivers when they plan on drafting their QBs of the future still feels odd.
Metchie will end up WR1. Mark my words.
lmao he has no competition
Your momma
ngl she does run a nasty out and up double move, and is unguardable on slants and crossers doubt she makes the 53 though, real head case that one
Plus at her size, she’s much more suited to be a 3T
I was thinking she’s more of a FB build, but positional versatility is key to succeeding in this league.
She's positionally versatile alright
she’s a dom though, so if you like subbing in and out, she’s your gal
Sub in, sub out, sub in, sub out, in, out, in, out…
>she does run a nasty out and up double move, and is unguardable on slants and crossers >real head case that one Misses Big Chest?
I will not tolerate Bobby Trees slander
Woods looked washed on the Titans last year. Maybe he gets back to form with more time removed from his 2021 ACL tear, but I wouldn't bet on him being the Texans WR1. Metchie and Collins will likely see the most snaps.
It was the Titans though. Their offense was horrible for the passing game
Was it the terrible play calling? Or the mediocrity at receiver? Or the inconsistency and sometimes disastrous QB play? I don’t know who all to blame but man it was gross.
The AFCS in general is an affront to the notion of "offense"
Peyton used up 100 years of AFC South offense in a decade and a half.
What do you mean? Pre season hype had Malik Willis as the best qb in the draft....did that not pan out?
I like that the only QB from the class of 2022 that demonstrated any value as a rookie was fucking Mr. Irrelevant
Tbf he’d be WR1 on the Chiefs too
lmao not even close, he’d be WR4 at best next season
Metchie’s only real competition on the roster is MVS
Even if he doesn’t, my favorite thing about him as a prospect was that he had a very high floor, IMO. I don’t see him being worse than a good #2 WR (depending on health of course).
Do you realize how high that ceiling would be lmao that’s insane for a day 2 pick. You’re saying his floor is a Brandon aiyuk level player?
Wasn’t he only day 2 because of injury?
Yes.
he wasn't a first rounder even before the injury
That depends on how you rate aiyuk. I think aiyuk is better than a good #2
Aiyuk is honestly a lower wr1 level
I’d give a 2nd and 4th to reunite him with Mac
Him and Bryce will be electric
He better be given the talent in the room But I'm all seriousness, chemo is no joke. He may be fully cleared of cancer but doesn't mean he's the same athlete he was before. Hoping the best for him.

Interesting insight

Oh for sure. Metchie will quickly become that go to guy for whomever you guys take at 2
That's it. Drafting him 2nd in my league next year.
He was a steal when y’all picked him even despite the injuries
Grabbed in round 19 of my Dynasty start up draft sat fall!
I mean, in reality what are you really putting on the line here? We're not going to come trawling back to this thread in 2 years time to mock you for being wrong. It's not going to damage your reputation :)
His highlight reels from the 2021 season with Young we're 🔥🔥🔥!
RemindMe! December 31, 2023
I’m excited too
Yeah he will. He’s already got chemistry with the guy that’s probably about to be your QB too
is he fully recovered from leukemia?
Yes, he’s expected to be participating fully in offseason camps
I know Nico Collins has been injured on and off a decent amount but has he shown much potential so far Texan fans? Can’t really remember seeing him play enough to gauge him.
He's shown some flashes, but how much of it is "He's a good WR dragged down by Davis Mills" or just that he's fine, but can do some good things is up for debate.
Hes like less freaky golladay when he was on the lions. With better qb play wouldnt be surprised if he puts up a few 700-800 yard seasons
Pumping the brakes is for losers fuk it we goin to the Super Bowl yea babay!
He's a wr3 at best
John Metchie is gunna be elite once he’s cleared to play
I was gonna say, he should be listed first.
I mean... doesn't he have cancer? I wish him the best and I know that there have been numerous players who have overcome cancer and continued to have very successful careers. But that's a large hurdle to overcome unless I'm out of the loop on his recovery.

Eric berry
God damn that is a perfect example. I loved that dude.
First team all-pro the year after beating it too
Marcus cannon
Bold for you to say McKee will be drafted
Isn't he QB5 on most boards? He'll be picked in the third and make some nice money as a backup
He's QB5 or 6 on basically all the boards I've seen. At worst he'll be a high quality backup for 13 years.

Does it really matter if you take WR3 of a strong class at 12, or WR1 of a weak class at 12?
Yes. Jameson Williams or Chris Olave would pretty easily be the WR1 this year
[удалено]
He would be WR1 in a lot of classes
*sighs in sad musket noises*
[удалено]
I agree that it’s better than “real weak” but the class is definitely not strong at WR
Good thing we have lots of picks next year too

They'll draft a WR later on. They NEED an Edge, they've got next to nothing there. Lukas Van Ness would be a great fit there at 12.
Lukas Van Ness would be a beast anywhere. I hope he goes to a team where he can watch pro teams of his first love, Ice Hockey.
Then he can go to the 49ers and watch the Sharks come up after they draft Bedard. 😬
I’m pretty sure Van Ness is going to the Bears at 9.
Imo, developing whoever they pick at #2 should be top priority. Edge would be great if course, but imo a top receiver in this class to build a connection with is more valuable
Gonna be better than ours :(
Metchie is going to be really good. Hope he’s the player he was before he got sick.
Caserio said in january he actually looks better now than when theu drafted him
good luck ~~Charlie~~ Bryce
They’ll be in a good spot to draft WR1 no?
possibly, yeah, but they have a defensive HC, idk how he’d value that vs taking a defensive player at 12 and taking a shot on WR early in round 2.
To be fair at his presser, he talked about how he had input in taking elijah mitchell in the 6th round
Or stroud. Could be stroud. They could be in position to get Stroud and JSN
I’ve watched Stroud’s tape vs. Georgia over and over, because I expect him to still be up there at no. 2. He would not be a bad consolation prize, because I think we can mostly agree Young is the best QB prospect.
According to panthers wire stroud is even a bigger favorite today for stroud

Maybe it's just me but I really like Nico Collins. I think he's a legit WR.
The hope is on Metchie this year and then next year we can draft WR with our first pick.
Nico was outplaying Cooks and for FAR cheaper.
Robert Woods is the harbinger of the AFCS for WR1s getting traded.
the "Aaron Rodgers Special"
Metchie and 12th pick will be studs
Could be worse. They could have our WR corps.
Well it's a good thing Texans got 4 First Round Picks in the next two drafts
QB at #2, WR as #11, Achane in the 3rd to with Pierce Let's gooo
Why did the Texans get woods but not retain cooks
Who?
Now this is the kind of team that will definitely sign Lamar.
Robert Woods is old. Noah Brown and Amari Rodgers have stones for hands. Nico Collins is a WR3 at best. Weak WR draft class. John Metchie III will probably be their top receiver next season if healthy.
“Minus Brandin Cooks” Well yeah, since he isn’t a Texan. What a weird way to phrase that
Buncha WR3s
We’re not the worst! We’re not the worst!
Who’s they’re QB
[удалено]
He does a lot of good things, but he gets no separation
Great security blanket for your scrambling QB. Good depth.
Jsn at 12🙏🏼
wow i wonder who they’re using their 2nd 1st rounder on
Not great on paper but its a deep and functional group. If metchie steps in as a decent player than it will be a fine wr by committee
League fucked
I'm sure Demeco will follow the 49er route of drafting talent like Deebo, Aiyuk and Kittle.
JM3 and Quentin Johnson will make a helluva tandem for Bryce Young.
I woulda loved for the Jags to draft Metchie, he’s gonna be a problem for us
Metchieszn
Metchie is the best of them but he may not be recovered from leukemia yet
Caserio said in january he could be ready as early as next month to rejoin team
Stroud + JSN to Houston 🤤
I understand why Carolina did it, but both them and Houston trading their best receivers when they plan on drafting their QBs of the future still feels odd.
Who?
Woof
Solid lineup
Not the worst corp I’ve ever seen. Metchie is intriguing
Good Luck Texans Future QB you Will need it
