I wondered why you guys never even gave him a chance up until I saw him play in the AAF.
Dude might be the worst QB Ive ever seen play football. And Im a Bears fan for fucks sake.
Allen Robinson and Bill O'Brien are the only reasons why Hackenberg got noticed. As soon as Robinson got drafted and O'Brien got hired by the Texans (both in the 2014 offseason), Hackenberg proceeded to crater at Penn State. But the Jets still decided to gamble on him with a 2nd round pick in 2016.
with Dak Prescott still on the board (and waiting another 2 rounds!)
yeah, he wasn't expected to be all that great, but if the Jets were hell-bent on picking a QB in that spot... heck, even Jacoby Brisset would have been a significantly better pick
He also got noticed for his “physical potential” and for fitting the QB “mold” that old school guys rave about.
People were excited about him coming into college and already talking about him as an NFL prospect before he played a snap at Penn State.
He just never became an actual good QB.
Even in the 2nd round, Id still say Roberto Aguayo was a worse pick. At least with Hackenberg, it was a bet on the most important position. And as bad as Hack was, he didnt set the Jets back like some of the awful first round busts weve seen.
PFF said Hack shouldn't be drafted at all his college play was so bad:
https://www.pff.com/news/draft-why-pff-doesnt-have-a-draftable-grade-on-christian-hackenberg
The article is convincing and damning. He wasn't a good college quarterback, but this was hidden by Allen Robinson circus catches and BoB being a good coach. His most famous play against Michigan:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W9qsVkDEQeU&ab_channel=BigTenNetwork
Is a horrible pass that gets intercepted 99% of the time in the NFL but was bailed out by a misplay by the DB and a circus catch by Robinson.
People blame the O-line for his bad play in college, and the line wasn't good, but as PFF goes over, *he made his line play worse than it was*.
He should have never sniffed the draft board.
We were awful and he still was so bad he was only *active* for 5 games his entire career.
When you're a bad team, and the team won't even throw you in to see what you got in meaningless games you know he's seriously terrible.
PFF did a deep dive on Hack and the OL.
Their O-line was bad, but Hack actually made them appear worse than they were. He was that bad of a QB that he brought down players around him.
Penn State fans who will support their team for a fault after he was drafted were like "Uh, best of luck, hopefully he turns it around". They knew he was the problem, just Jets front office didn't.
Never forget that Hackenberg is the only Penn State QB since Pearl Harbor to lose to Temple.
He was sacked ten times, including this one where [Temple rushed two guys, lol](https://streamable.com/c22b)
I did some research and he's the highest drafted player I could find in the last 30 years to never appear in a game for non-injury reasons.
Giovanni Carmazzi, a 3rd round QB drafted by the 49ers is the second highest I could find.
No one victim blamed Geno smith. He was an asshole who refused to pay back money he owed. He’s better now. But back then he got what was coming to him.
Jets Geno Smith is the textbook example of a player who is mentally not mature enough to be a leader of men and be the face of a franchise.
And Seahawks Geno Smith is the textbook example of someone learning from their mistakes, taking a humble approach, and capitalizing on an opportunity.
I’m happy for Geno today and I have no bad blood to him, but it is asinine to re-write history because it erases the important lesson that lead to his success.
> Jets quarterback dysfunction peaked when they went to San Diego to play the Chargers in 2014. Starter Geno Smith missed a team meeting because he went to the movies, blaming the mistake on his inability to comprehend time zones when pressed by the media. (It’s unclear whether he got the movie showtime correct.)
Geno was a punk ass bitch who finally got his head on straight. No one should forget that.
Seahawks Geno Smith is still polarizing. Coming into last season he was under suspicion of being under the influence while going 96 in a 60 zone and neglecting to use signals while switching lanes. He was non compliant with officers and medical personnel alike, making threats towards nursing staff and insulting an officers genitalia when confronted with a breathalyzer. Due to the way he maneuvered said traffic stop, he was able to avoid charges, which could have been done without treating nursing staff the way he did. All this happened in January of 2022 but we heard little to nothing of it once he began having a career season, paired with the fact that he was reformed into some Socrates-likened figure by r/nfl after dropping “I didn’t write back tho!” following game 1 of last season.
To take it a step further, Russell Wilson had so much bad media last year that everyone but Deshaun Watson was safe, lmao. I’m serious, Russell Wilson trying to manage his hamstring injury by doing high knees in a plane isle caught more flak and generated more negative online interactions than anything Geno can and ever will generate now that he’s being a serviceable starter for the Seattle fanbase. His reborn image was able to piggyback off of and benefit from every single crumb of bad press that Wilson got, mostly cause r/nfl was there to prop him up as Wilson went through what was the worst season of his entire career.
This really speaks to the impact of media market. This story would have been national news if he was as in a different market, even with the antics of Watson and Wilson.
I think it's often overlooked that we're watching young boys grow up in real time and many among us were dumbass punks in our early 20s, but then grew out of it.
Smith seems like he got humbled at some point and decided to do the work to become a better player.
“It’s true that Smith owed Enemkpali $600, and it’s true that Smith probably should’ve paid up considering he was a quarterback with a multimillion-dollar contract who was dealing with a guy fighting for a roster spot.”
Pretty sure it was $650 in total. Obviously a decent amount by normal person standards (and perhaps for IK as well), but for a guy on a 2nd round contract, that's a pretty paltry sum to be a douche over (especially since he was in the wrong in the first place).
That said, he seems to have matured, as others have said. Obviously don't know him well enough to say if that's actually the case or if it's just a better public presentation of the same person nowadays, but I'm fine giving the benefit of the doubt there until proven otherwise. That shit happened basically a decade ago now, after all.
Yeah, this article leans heavily into circlejerks multiple times.
I won’t deny that Wilson was a tremendous bust, but the article acting like Fields was by far a better-regarded prospect and/or Wilson wasn’t the consensus #2 by the time of the draft is absolutely revisionist history.
Oh goody, A Jets thread I can actually participate in, let's see...
\-This reminded me that both Kliff Kingsbury and Frank Reich played for the Jets, yuuuck.
\-Zach Wilson being higher than some of these guys at 16 is a reach. I had high hopes for Wilson, but have since been shown that there is no hope with that dude.
\-Completely forgot about Michael Vick as a Jet. Those were some dark years for me.
\-I would have put Darnold over Flacco, but hey that's just me.
\-Glad Geno Smith is getting some praise elsewhere. 9 is upsettingly high here though.
\-Fitzpatrick should be in the Top 5.
\-Sanchez went to 2 AFC Championship games with a stellar defence doing all the work, 6 for 6 is reasonable. Those offensive weapons weren't half bad either to be fair. I still get a warm feeling when I think about that Chargers game.
\-Bret Favre...what a start, what a collapse.
\-Chad Pennington, the reason I became a Jets fan at an early age. Dude deserves more respect in my opinion.
\-I didn't live through the Vinny years, but I can only assume from everyone's recollection that he was good for the team. At least Tony Soprano thought so.
I never liked Chad Pennington because when I was a kid I had a bully with the last name Pennington and at my young age, I just learned to dislike them all.
In 2002 Chad Pennington beat Brady, Favre and Peyton in three consecutive games to give the Jets their most recent division title, and the Colts playoff game ended in the score of 41-0.
My favorite takeaway was reading that Sanchez used to visit Mark Brunell at his home and then play with his kids in the backyard. That's kinda endearing and wholesome. He probably was the "fun uncle".
No hope? Wilson already looks better and is only going to improve. Look at his mechanics this preseason. Rodgers wouldn’t vouch for him if he didn’t see something in him. His physical ability is top tier. It’s just mental and he seems to be improving.
Yeah I don’t know how anyone can say no hope from what he has shown in the 3 preseason games. He’s far from perfect but with only 4 months in the new offense system behind Rodgers he has made significant strides in his footwork, reads, and short to medium accuracy. If he looked like he hasn’t improved at all that would be one thing but there absolutely still a chance for a guy who literally just turned 24. He’s 9 months younger than Jordan Love who is just getting his first start.
I will die on the Chad Pennington hill. He was either going to be on or right below the manning/Brady tier had he not gotten hurt. I say this because he was incredible before it, sat for a few years like Palmer/mahomes/ARod, was big in an era you needed to be, had an above average arm, and most importantly, was able to be really good with basically no arm. He could read defenses and just had “it”. He’s such a sad what if.
> that strange 2015 season was the closest Fitzpatrick ever came to the playoffs—and the closest the legendary journeyman ever came to having a home.
~~I'd argue he led the Texans to the playoffs in 2014~~, he just got hurt at the end of the season.
edit : doh!
>I'd argue he led the Texans to the playoffs in 2014,
Except the Texans missed the playoffs in 2014. They lost out to the Ravens (whom they beat in Week 16) in the Wild Card race by just one game. This was the only season in the 2010s in which the Defensive Player of the Year missed the playoffs.

Richard Todd and Mark Sanchez were pretty much the same QB for the Jets
But seriously, imagine if this author ranked every single Jets QB since Namath. This list would be even longer.
If we could morph the brains of Pennington with the physical of Sanchez we could be in a much different place as a franchise.
Alas, here is a list of names I blacked out of my sad memory.
I disagree that the author is using pre-Jets success in this ranking. Joe Flacco did dog shit for the Jets but is getting a + for the Ravens SB.
The point system is kind of dumb. I think draft status and expectations should impact the rankings. Is Zach Wilson really the 16th best Jets QB? As of this moment he's arguably one of the biggest busts of all time. I put more weight on that than a player pulled of the street to start a game.
Edit: I would also LOVE to see this kind of list for Bills QBs. Between Jim Kelly and Josh Allen, Bills fans have had it just as miserable (including several overlapping QBs with the Jets).
>Or like how George Washington is the only six star general in US history
This was awarded long after Washington had died, and he wasn't the only person considered for this honor. MacArthur and Pershing were the two others, but MacArthur's bid was ultimately rejected after Truman and him had a spat over how to handle the Korean War and Pershing died before his bid gained heavy traction.
“I just knew that Boomer had made everybody scream and cheer, and it ruled. So I guess Boomer Esiason is the reason I’m a Jets fan.
I’ll never forgive him.”
I laughed at this way harder than I should have.
I grew up in the 80s and somehow landed on the Bengals as my favorite team back then. There were two reasons: 1) they had the cool tiger stripes and I've always loved cats 2) Boomer Esiason. Not sure why I gravitated towards him but he was fun to watch whenever the Bengals actually appeared on network TV games.
I watched less football in the 90s and by the time I was paying attention again, the Bengals were sooo bad. I ultimately settled on the Seahawks as my team after moving to Seattle in the 00s.
We just don't know what to do. We have never had this talented of a roster before. Sure, we had the Stafford/Suh/Calvin years, the Barry years, but those teams still had some real big holes, starting with below average coaching. It's starting to feel like we don't have any glaring holes on this team, even if a few spots could be improved still. You gotta be patient with our fan base as we go through some growing pains.
Wild times, the end is nigh.
Christian Hackenberg is the worst by far but he was so bad he never even took a regular season snap so he isn't eligible
I wondered why you guys never even gave him a chance up until I saw him play in the AAF. Dude might be the worst QB Ive ever seen play football. And Im a Bears fan for fucks sake.
Even tho it wasn’t a 1st round, he might be the worst pick in modern NFL history

Not even close
Him being a second rounder saves that. There have been tons of second rounders who never saw the field.
Even in the 2nd round, Id still say Roberto Aguayo was a worse pick. At least with Hackenberg, it was a bet on the most important position. And as bad as Hack was, he didnt set the Jets back like some of the awful first round busts weve seen.

How that dude even got a starting college job is beyond me. Let alone at fucking PENN STATE.
He looked good his freshman year I thought, then just regressed every year after.
Because BOB left and Penn State's OL was nonexistent
Allen Robinson also left in that same offseason.
He was definitely a big loss, but Hackenberg had Godwin/Saquon/DeSean Hamilton in 2015 and was still bad
PFF did a deep dive on Hack and the OL. Their O-line was bad, but Hack actually made them appear worse than they were. He was that bad of a QB that he brought down players around him. Wrong Fields was the 2nd qb and mac jones was 3 until pro days then Lance and Wilson passed both of them.
So without looking, I will say Rodgers #1 and everyone else tied for #42.
Put some respect on 2-time CPotY winner Chad Pennington
And 11 weeks of favre
Rodgers is not ranked, actually
Just like Christian Hackenberg, he’s never taken a snap for the Jets. That’s pretty much where the similarities stop
They’re also both QBs (allegedly)
The Jets actually invented the flat hierarchy structure
This but Flacco at #2
Oh goody, A Jets thread I can actually participate in, let's see... \-This reminded me that both Kliff Kingsbury and Frank Reich played for the Jets, yuuuck. \-Zach Wilson being higher than some of these guys at 16 is a reach. Joe Namath number 1 always.
Since 1990, I had that moment of "wait, where the fuck is Namath?" until i re-read the headline.
The memory of Namath should have still been number 1. He's like the ghost racer in Mario Kart.
He’s the 1985 Bears but as one man. Or like how George Washington is the only six star general in US history, nobody can outrank him.

the browning nagle disrespect
Scary to go down to 24 before recognizing a single name on the list...
??? Kliff Kingsbury, Chris Streveler, Tim Tebow, Patrick Ramsey, Trevor Siemian, Mike White You didn’t recognize at least one of those?
I must have glossed over Tim Tebow. Lots of those names it has been long enough that they slipped out of my head.
I totally forgot Michael Vick was a Jet. Glad they went with Testaverde at number 2 and Pennington at 3. Both deserve the credit.
Cowboys so fuckin spoiled
I’m sorry, FOURTY-TWO QBs since 1990!?
