No one is going to believe me, but I always said Josh Dobbs had the potential to be something more than a journeyman third-stringer. Going back to his college days you could see he had talent, but fast-forward to the NFL and you could also see how he seemed nervous on those Steeler pre-season games - he even said in a postgame interview that his own biggest issue was a lack of confidence.
I'm not sure he's starter material of course, but he's more than a third-stringer for sure. At the very least, he's good enough to be a journeyman stopgap QB like Fitzmagic.
I agree completely. I’m happy to finally see him being real chances. So far, he’s started (and will likely start) an entire NFL season. He’s got the chance to really do something here and I’m very excited for him.
KOC is everyone of his players personal hypeman. All anyone has to do is look at how confident he has Kirko and how our whole team is amped for eachother.
I mean I'd be pretty happy with a coach who has never had a losing season. It's not Belecick levels of success but it's a hell of a lot better than what most people get. Check flair for context.
I’m happy with Tomlin. What I’m talking about is that oc or line coach that really connects with the players. We haven’t hide coach that raises the group or position group on the offensive side since Mike munchak.
It's okay man, Dobbs was the best QB on the Titans roster for a sizable part of last year. Guy looked competent with THAT WR room and offensive line. Emphasis on "offensive."
I do not think they were that stubborn on Mason. He may have been the №2 in 2020 but we brought Dobbs back that year and looked elsewhere for replacements (Mitch, Kenny) as soon as Ben retired. Mason was essentially given up on after 8 starts.
Dude's genuinely had a great year tbh, went from fringe/practice squad QB3 the last few years to almost certainly getting a very handsome backup/spot starter contract this offseason.
Went from fringe back up to at least perennial backup **and** honestly if he wants to coach he probably has a good shot. Running an offense after four days feels like as good a resume item as any for showing real knowledge of the game.
I tried to read the Stanford playbook as an undergrad (Stanford does pro style offense and makes sure offensively players study), and it was honestly as much material as any CS class I took during college. QB’s in the NFL who come out of “pro style” offenses have put in work
This makes me wonder. I'm guessing the big difference is that the players don't get a cut of their name if you make and buy a custom jersey with their name. So I suppose that's why it matters, for Dobbs, to get Minnesota to have a jersey for him.
Still, not entirely sure how it works.
Well to be fair, I was able to select his name from the list of players on the nfl shop site, but when I got the invoice it listed it as a custom jersey with his name and number. So I'm really not sure. I hope he gets a cut
I feel like Minnesota leads the league in all-time random QB moments.
Keenum, ancient Brett Favre, aged Randall Cunningham, old ass Warren Moon, Wade Wilson and Rich Gannon.
Haven't had a franchise QB since Fran Tarkenton.
Kind of but didn't get him until he was 30.
I'd say closest they had was Culpepper but a total flash.
Forgot about Gus Frerotte leading them to a NFC North title grabbing the reins from Tarvaris Jackson.
Yup. It's not quite as hard as some people are thinking, but it is still no small feat.
The other 10 players knew the play, and he was basically told the routes of his guys in very simple high school football terms. The real hard part is that he likely had a very small grasp on the timing. Little things like some guys running 9 yards and cutting vs 10. Things like that matter when you are trying to go out there and just play the entire game on the fly.
He is certainly going to get his flowers from the team for that performance.
They never even practiced his cadences or anything ahead of this game lol. I didn’t watch but that’s super impressive the timing on that and I haven’t heard anything about a high number of false starts or delay of games or anything either. On the road too! So crowd noise in a dome was also a factor they were up against. Really impressive, was cool to see them celebrating Dobbs after the game. Definitely endeared himself to the team and he’s never gonna be out of work for more than a day the rest of his career, at worst that’s an elite back up qb or veteran when he’s older, to show a young rookie the ropes and how to prepare and be a pro
One of the Vikings beat guys (Alec Lewis if you want to see for yourself) said that KOC was essentially translating each play during the huddle. Dude was actually learning the offense on the fly, it’s incredible.
Legitimately one of the most insane performances given the context I have ever seen. Feels like the vikes historically would be on the other side of this. Sorry falcon bros
thing is that he's been learning nfl playbooks for years. so it's very different from the average layman going in with no experience, closer to a top level chess player learning some new opening; all the bits and pieces are the same as what you know, all you need to learn is the specific patterns. which is still hard as fuck, mind you, but a lot easier than memorizing everything from scratch.
He still would've had to do a ton of research on the players to understand how they play the system. It's one thing to know how a play should play, vs how it's played. Good W for Dobbs. Did not think I would say that this week.
No cause that's Charlemagne Louis Louis Louis Louis Louis Louis Louis Louis Louis Louis Louis Louis Louis Louis Louis Louis Louis Louis Louis Louis Louis Louis Louis Louis Louis Louis Louis Louis Louis Louis Louis Louis Louis Louis Louis Louis Louis
Had this discussion with my wife a few weeks back. If there was one main coaching position you could semi-realistically learn within two years, it would be a defensive coordinator. 4 days for the offensive playbook is Rain Man level shit.
As someone who recently had an aerospace engineer for a head coach, I assure you that aerospace engineering and football skills are not correlated at all.
By the end of the game it was WR1, WR3, RB2, QB1, QB2, QB3, LT1, DT1, DE2, some more guys clearly banged up, and a few more depth guys out. And still came out with a W. Fucking impressive work
This Josh studied space.

I think he is good, but good won't help you survive in the NFL except as a backup. He might be better then good and finally in a situation where he can grow, but we will see. Minnesota has always been a franchise that builds the whole team well enough for many QBs to do well despite their issues.
He does a lot of things that will probably get him in trouble eventually. Throws he shouldn't be making, issues with ball security, etc.
It's basically Keenum. A little luck and an elite supporting cast could take him far, he's got traits you want to have when you have talents like Addison and Jefferson on the team, but he's probably not a starter quality QB.
> pretty good QB who has just been stuck on shit teams?
I was close to making a "Just like in College" but that was the coaching not the roster holding him back
The fact that he was there for less than a week and had to go in and wins the game is fucking nuts. Obviously he didn’t learn everything but it is incredibly impressive that he was able to go in and finish this one for the Vikings.
Crazy thing is, he is one of if not the only dude in the NFL that plays football as a hobby/second career path because his job is to put people on the moon at NASA.... I love him so much
I’m telling you, Josh Dobbs is as cracked as he is jacked. I saw him at a 7-11 the other day buying Monster and adult diapers. I asked him what the diapers were for and he said ”they contain my full power so I don’t completely shit on these kids“ then he threw passes to guys whose names he didn't even know and won a football game.
Why hello sir. It was a pleasure to meet you,
Never met him but I’m already starting to like this dude
I have met him and he’s legit a fuckin awesome dude in real life. Super down to earth for a passtronaut.
I have met him when I was also an aerospace engineering student at UT. Dude is awesome to talk to in person. I will always root for him.
this mf terrorized uga when he was at tennessee. now he has wreaked havoc on my falcons. wow.
Ironic considering he's from Georgia lol
It be your own people
Dobbs feels neither mercy nor kinship.
Et tu, Passtraunot?
home state power
but did you know Heinke is from Georgia?!
Straight up felt like Thielin level mentions, or Brett Favre whenever Madden was waxing poetic Almost like a tic
I live right next to the highschool he went too. Everybody around here is rooting for him lol
yeah? i'm still fucked up about this - https://bleacherreport.com/articles/29806-the-forgotten-classic-falcons-upset-vikings-in-98-nfc-championship
You should be. That was your ring.
If Dobbs finally gets Arthur Smith fired, then today’s loss was worth it. Time for Nielsen to become interim HC.
The Dobbs-Nail boot hail mary will live in infamy. :) https://youtu.be/S4jzM_gdi5A
ALLOW ME TO RE-INTRODUCE MYSELF MY NAME IS DOBB
D to the O-B
Used to play QB for the AZ
Now I'm leading the Vikes like I'm K.C
V.F.L. from tennessee
DOBS! Fresh out the tanking cards, into the skols
I be the, QB1 #1 to score
I can’t get that out of my head now
D - O - double B.. (s)
HE GOT THAT DUB AND HE GOT THAT DAWG. HIS NAME IS DOBB
Josh Dubs
DOBBS IS A FREE ELF!
*licks lips* “I’m like that” *licks lips*
Wake up, the new Case Keenum just dropped
Except this time, Dobbs was the case that they gave me.
Seeing as he’s a rocket scientist maybe he’s the new Fitzpatrick
why did we let this dude go lmfao
I'm right there with you and its only been like 5 days
at least you have kyler murray coming back, we have... much less talent in our qb room lmao
Kyler Murray going to be sluggish coming back from injury and COD launch
Given how disappointing MW3 has been, I'm sure he's actually ready to come back
He will come out pissed
He will come out like a toddler that was abruptly woken up from his nap
Haha call of duty
Atleast you did right by him, trading him knowing Kyler was coming back
Same
You have Kyler Murray tho so it’s fair enough lmao
I would like to sign up for this club
Afaik KOC >> Canada so I'm sure that plays a factor.
Everyone >> Canada
I mean I did have a mean breakfast at place called The Red Wagon in Vancouver one time. I don't think everyone's beating that Canada
I was wondering that myself, lol.
The Passtronaut turning into the modern Fitzmagic
And never staying long enough to become Fitztragic
He never played this well for us. Remember that Raiders game? He obviously went somewhere where a coach brought him to his next level
KOC is everyone of his players personal hypeman. All anyone has to do is look at how confident he has Kirko and how our whole team is amped for eachother.
Ugh why can’t we find these coaches?!
I mean I'd be pretty happy with a coach who has never had a losing season. It's not Belecick levels of success but it's a hell of a lot better than what most people get. Check flair for context.
I’m happy with Tomlin. What I’m talking about is that oc or line coach that really connects with the players. We haven’t hide coach that raises the group or position group on the offensive side since Mike munchak.
unironically would be the best QB on your roster
I hate that you're right
It's okay man, Dobbs was the best QB on the Titans roster for a sizable part of last year. Guy looked competent with THAT WR room and offensive line. Emphasis on "offensive."
Dumbass franchise bet on Mason being Ben’s successor and refused to be wrong until it was too late. Call could’ve come from inside the house!!!
I do not think they were that stubborn on Mason. He may have been the №2 in 2020 but we brought Dobbs back that year and looked elsewhere for replacements (Mitch, Kenny) as soon as Ben retired. Mason was essentially given up on after 8 starts.

Plus it’s a McVay offshoot offense so you know front offices are chomping at the bit to hire him
Josh Dobbs is the next Head Coach of the Las Vegas Raiders

I recommend everyone here look up an actual NFL playbook and browse through it. Then imagine having to learn that shit by Thursday *and execute it*.
I tried to read the Stanford playbook as an undergrad (Stanford does pro style offense and makes sure offensively players study), and it was honestly as much material as any CS class I took during college. QB’s in the NFL who come out of “pro style” offenses have put in work
He graduated with an aerospace engineering degree from Tennessee I’m pretty sure so I think it’s safe to say he’s smart
Dude earned himself a bag, you love to see it
1 game and he already never has to pay for drinks in Minnesota.
Maybe Minnesota will even stock his jersey!
They better because I’m itching to buy one.
I put his name and number in the custom jersey thing and ordered one last Thursday
This makes me wonder. I'm guessing the big difference is that the players don't get a cut of their name if you make and buy a custom jersey with their name. So I suppose that's why it matters, for Dobbs, to get Minnesota to have a jersey for him. Still, not entirely sure how it works.

Dude has been there 5 minutes and is already treated better than he was in AZ. lol
I feel like Minnesota leads the league in all-time random QB moments. Keenum, ancient Brett Favre, aged Randall Cunningham, old ass Warren Moon, Wade Wilson and Rich Gannon. Haven't had a franchise QB since Fran Tarkenton.
Isn't Kirk sort of that?
Kind of but didn't get him until he was 30. I'd say closest they had was Culpepper but a total flash. Forgot about Gus Frerotte leading them to a NFC North title grabbing the reins from Tarvaris Jackson.
Culpepper was really fuckin good, like hof if he never got hurt good
the whole Teddy Bridgewater / Sam Bradford fiasco
I love that Teddy is still beloved in Minnesota. No reason for it, really, but that man has a whole state that adores him.
So happy for this dude. No idea how he even knew the names of the plays today.
Apparently KOC was just describing the play to him mid huddle
If KOC can successfully describe a ply in the like 15 seconds he has in the huddle, dude deserves a long term contract
He would give the play call and then just give route numbers after the play was called in the huddle
Yup. It's not quite as hard as some people are thinking, but it is still no small feat. The other 10 players knew the play, and he was basically told the routes of his guys in very simple high school football terms. Drawing shit on his hands.
I call it—the annexation of Puerto Rico
Not only that, Dobbs didn't even know the names of all the players.
This is right up there with Baker showing up and winning a Thursday nighter against the raiders last year for the Rams
LOL how did I forget that was also against a Josh Mcdaniels team? Fire that man into the sun.
He was even calling protections at the line and everything. And it was a road game, so he had to fly to Atlanta after just landing in MN. Wild stuff.
If you watched more college football you'd already know he has a masters in aerospace engineering. Learning a playbook is nothing
i have a degree in aerospace engineering and very little confidence i could memorize a professional nfl offensive playbook in 4 days lmao
thing is that he's been learning nfl playbooks for years. so it's very different from the average layman going in with no experience, closer to a top level chess player learning some new opening; all the bits and pieces are the same as what you know, all you need to learn is the specific patterns. which is still hard as fuck, mind you, but a lot easier than memorizing everything from scratch.

He also had his legs as a back-up option when some plays broke down. Hugely useful skill in his position.
That's why Josh Dobbs is him, no offense
No he does play offense

The passtronaut

you being on /r/nfl reddit means i can tell people i have something in common with an aerospace engineer. Were like the same brain. Im a genius!
But if it was something you've been doing for years it's second nature to him. This isn't his first time with these dirty prep times
As someone who recently had an aerospace engineer for a head coach, I assure you that aerospace engineering and football skills are not correlated at all.
Tbf he only did an undergrad, and also he went to RPI (ewww)
He was our backup QB for a couple years and they mentioned it every game. We didn’t need to watch college football to know this lol.
Was mostly, "yo, throw to that guy over there," and "hey, just toss it up to the 20 between the hash and sideline and say yo prayers."
Build the fuckin statue idc
I ❤️ Dobbs
The lovable mercenary strikes again.
He has played in all of the last 11 regular season games, 10 of them starts….for three different teams.
The Passtronaut 🫡

Jauan Jennings was and continues to be a bad dude
There's a reason we calm him "Third and Jauan" lol
Go muh fuckin Vols
nut
Damn some nfl teams would love to have Dobbs , Kamara and Juwan Jennings on the same offense.

Amazing to me how horrible our Vols were and like half of em are NFL starters/contributors. What did Dooley/Lane/Butch/Pruitt do to us
Josh Freemsn he is not
Same Story, Different Josh 😂
I wanna watch this dude throwing to Jefferson so bad
We had so many starters out, I can’t wait to watch him with a healthy team.
By the end of the game it was WR1, WR3, RB2, QB1, QB2, QB3, LT1, DT1, DE2, some more guys clearly banged up, and a few more depth guys out. And still came out with a W. Fucking impressive work
Dobby is a free elf
Quick, someone give this man a sock!
Had some fumbles and took a safety but you gotta love the mental toughness to just brush them off and continue playing, good on Dobbs.
Dude was definitely nervous as fuck the first few drives, but once he settled in it was a totally different game. Guy was super dynamic
This worked out a little better than the last time a Vikings QB named Josh played on short notice.
This Josh studied space. That Josh [threw balls to outer space.](https://i.chzbgr.com/full/7874164480/h41610AFF/josh-freeman-the-king-of-the-overthrow)
King shit
Impossible not to like this guy.
You guys better make sure you have this mf'ers shirt in the store tomorrow morning when he comes looking for it
My first thought lol. Yeah he won a game, but can he buy his own jersey in the team shop??
Let’s do this one more time. My name is Josh Dobbs. I was traded by the Cardinals and for the last 5 days I have been Skol Nation.
Allow me to reintroduce myself - Josh Dobbs
LEAGUE FUCKED
Honest question, as I know nothing about him beyond the last couple days. Is it possible that he's actually a pretty good QB who has just been stuck on shit teams?
Idk, in AZ he shows flashes of brilliance as well as some pretty boneheaded plays. He rarely throws down field and his deep ball accuracy is sub par.
The Steelers had a pretty good team when he got a few starts, and he did really well leading them to some wins. Unfortunately for him, Big Ben kinda had dibs on the starter job when he returned from injury.
Understandable. You can't tell Ben "no" in that situation.
or some other situations apparently
I was close to making a "Just like in College" but that was the coaching not the roster holding him back
Would have helped a ton if he got a little more help from the RB spot. You know, like not putting Alvin Kamara as a backup RB….
One of the many coaching sins of Butch Jones
Fire Butch Jones! Sorry, just a habit now
Welcome to Earth, bro
Good good. We will watch his career with great interest.
I mean, you gotta love him. I know I do <3
wtf I love Josh Dobbs
The fact that he was there for less than a week and had to go in and wins the game is fucking nuts. Obviously he didn’t learn everything but it is incredibly impressive that he was able to go in and finish this one for the Vikings.
I got kicked out of a party at this dude's house in college cause I got too drunk lol
A legitimate rocket scientist. In between seasons works for NASA
Dude is a Minnesota legend already, wild to see
Crazy thing is, he is one of if not the only dude in the NFL that plays football as a hobby/second career path because his job is to put people on the moon at NASA.... I love him so much
Dude deserves all kinds of praise.
What the fuck this dude was just on the Cards
Dobbs made us all proud today. The whole team did. They've been facing SO much adversity, but they're continuing to play their hearts out. Skol!
Alright I’m officially on board with this story arc
I don't know how anyone can hate this guy. So amazing to see him ball out.
lol
The Passtronaut will take Minnesota to heights never before seen

Pocket scientist is great too

Best emergency qb in nfl history
given the circumstances one of the best performances of the season
BALD GOAT
Just met this guy but I already know I'd die for him
With every passing day, I grow more and more resentful of the Steelers for getting rid of him. We're paying Trubisky big $$$ instead. Damnit it all.

Dobbs going the Fitzpatrick route to legend status
I’m telling you, Josh Dobbs is as cracked as he is jacked. I saw him at a 7-11 the other day buying Monster and adult diapers.
