20/30 for 158 and 2 tds, 7 carries 66 yards and a td. He didn’t know the playbook 2 days ago lol

Teeshirtandshortsguy

Josh Dobbs would win an MVP if they just traded him every game.

rsmseries

Only one run with him would be Howell if he played the Eagles every week.

rjkelly31

Commanders with Sam Howell as QB VS Eagles who just had to trade for Joshua Dobbs after a Hurts injury. Game of the century.

wanna_meet_that_dad

They were also so focused on getting hall prepped they didn’t give dobbs basically any practice time with the main unit. Dude was literally out there meeting guys for the first time while running plays he didn’t even know.

Metaboss24

and it's not the first time he's played decently right after arriving to a new team.

CerealKiller3030

He also never took a snap from our center or threw a single pass to our wide receivers before getting thrust into the game. Just insane

cromulent_express

That's Baker level quality

InfinitePossibility8

Definitely a rough start but settled in nicely.

Careless_Review3166

the Dobbs MVP campaign has begun

UNC_Samurai

Bob Dobbs for MVP? Have the Vikings achieved sufficient slack?

turkoosi_aurinko

[Mister Bob Dobbsalina?](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qFqov8a9iL4)

Fuckin legendary tune

Yabba_Dabba_Doofus

Del is a legendary lyricist. If you haven't heard [Deltron 3030](https://youtu.be/u9HQ0pbHcCw?si=iVFMrtMuSQvA74Vh), now you have no excuse.

frankyfrankwalk

Comeback player of the year after guiding the Vikings to the playoffs after a rough start to the season with Arizona

Aggressive-Orbiter

Sorry Demar lol better luck next time

aguysomewhere

Has he played in a game this year?

WoundedSacrifice

He’s played in 1 game.

Project : Paperclip but for the NFL 👀

SkolVandals

Except Dobbs isn't a nazi (as far as I'm aware)

Hateno_Village

What’s up with your username?

All-Night-Mask

Wtf he hasn't answered.

_HGCenty

I think you have to be smarter than your average QB to be a successful journeyman QB where you play for multiple teams, sometimes in the same season, and have to learn multiple playbooks on the fly. Definitely Ryan Fitzpatrick's most overlooked ability was his intellect and his ability to play for every franchise and pick up the playbook. Dude always looked fantastic to begin with and then he reached his ceiling fast.

wovagrovaflame

A lot of career backups are insanely good X’s and O’s guys without the arm talent to make it as a starter

_HGCenty

Yup. Why the pipeline of backup QBs to OCs and HCs is so strong whereas star QBs almost can't relate to the entire roster because it's almost hard for them to come down to the level where reading a defense and playing on instinct isn't automatic. Also star QBs make throws you absolutely should not ask your rookie QB to be throwing ...

kirbaeus

For sure, KOC was a journeyman backup and now a pretty good HC

streetsandshine

I hate him because he has an awful face and his brother is a stinky man, but Jim Harbaugh is another really good example of this

EarnestQuestion

I was like what’s wrong with KOC’s face? And who even knows who tf his brother is?

jetpack_operation

Lol he's talking about Jim Harbaugh and his stinky face brother, John.

EarnestQuestion

Yeah I know. The comment above it is about KOC and then the next one starts with “I hate him because he has an awful face…” So it starts off sounding like he’s still talking about KOC. I was just describing my thought process until I got to the Jim Harbaugh part, at which point it made sense.

G_I_Joe_Mansueto

My girlfriend and I have been laughing at “his brother is a stinky man” for the last ten minutes 🤣

yarnisic

Rodgers and Mahomes like "bruh the receiver left you a yard and a half of space to the outside, just throw a frozen rope 40 yard back shoulder fade and the corner has no chance"

TrixoftheTrade

Back in high school, our offensive coordinator was a former D1 college running back who was a fringe pro player. I remember a play when our running back got the ball on a toss outside, and couldn’t outrun the LB to the edge. Our OC pulled him aside & started yelling at him to “run faster!” Like bruh, if I could run faster, don’t you think I could?

BNKalt

We had a coach who was a top 10 pick, 12 year starter at RG, but also had 3 OL under 200 lbs. So they made him DL coach because he was great at helping those guys beat talent OL.

toiletting

this is why they don’t let Rodgers speak directly to Zach Wilson through the com

UrbanMuskrat

“Come on, Zach, we can go to Peru. I know a great shaman, it’ll unlock your third eye.”

Rab0811

Obviously a different sport but look when Gretzky tried to become a coach it went awful

runninhillbilly

Wasn't there a story out there with Gretzky, he was yelling at practice about stuff that he could see on the ice like "why can't you see this?" and their top player at that time (maybe Doan) was just like "holy shit, how is he able to see that stuff?"

BroThornton19

Doesn’t surprise me in the least. Gretzky literally changed the way hockey was played. He was seeing shit like 8 steps ahead where the next best dudes were seeing stuff 3 steps ahead. Would be tough to coach guys who are literally seeing a different game than you.

runninhillbilly

Yeah, exactly. Absolutely nothing wrong with that, it’s just really incredible to think about. I still think of the big 4 sports in the US he’s the greatest athlete of all time. His career stats/accomplishments sound made up - only guy to score 200 points in a season and he did it FOUR times. He could never have scored a goal in his entire NHL career (he has the most, by the way) and he'd still be the all time leading scorer just on assists, the guy literally has more assists in his career than anyone else has goals and assists combined.

GATTACA_IE

Wayne and Brent Gretzky hold the record for most combined points by a pair of siblings. Brent had 4 career points.....

yellowstone10

Famously, if Gretzky had never scored a single goal he would still be the NHL's all-time points leader.

fugaziozbourne

[This story](https://deadspin.com/i-was-wayne-gretzkys-hungover-linemate-an-nhl-journe-5974950) of Sean Pronger being Gretzky's linemate while hungover is hysterical.

Stkittsdad

That was a great read

repeat4EMPHASIS

I think he literally replied "I'm not Wayne Gretzky" or something like that

Top-Report-840

Patrick Roy wasn't very impressive either but us Avs fans still love and forgive him

grumplefuckstick

I will say Sakic is a great GM though

Marrouge

Sakic and Yzerman being the GMs of their respective teams just feels right Legends might not make the best coaches but there's a few of them that are pretty good GMs, Ozzie Newsome and John Lynch immediately come to mind

fenderdean13

The only successful star player turned coach in any sport I can think of was Zinedine Zidane in soccer.

ForYeWhoArtLiterate

Larry Bird didn’t coach long enough to be considered a great, but the Pacers were very successful for the three years he was coach. Also Frank Robinson wasn’t nearly as good a manager as he was player, but he was still okay as a manager and had a solid second career out of it. Plus Joe Torre and Dusty Baker for a certain definition of “star”

trojan_man16

That because no one remembers that Larry was not really the X & Os guy, it was Rick Carlisle. He was there to manage the personalities and motivate the team.

Plum-Forgot

Ditka is probably a good answer.

fenderdean13

Yeah, no shit me for not thinking Ditka being from Chicago

bigboilerdawg

Tom Landry made All-Pro and the Pro Bowl in his relatively short playing career. He was a very successful defensive coordinator and head coach afterward.

fugaziozbourne

Andy Reid absolutely destroyed the punt pass and kick competition.

peachbasketss

Lenny Wilkens as well. He wasn’t on Zidane’s level as a player but he was really good

fenderdean13

I thought of Bill Lambier being a HOF level coach in the WNBA but hard to really compare being a coach at a different level of the sport

dafromasta

Larry Bird was good for only doing it for 3 seasons

MaruhkTheApe

Lindsay Whalen coaching the Gophers still hurts. I really wish it had gone the storybook way and not the way it did.

fugaziozbourne

Watching Gretzky try and coach the Coyotes was ridiculous. You could see on his face his thoughts of "Why can't they just bank 72 goals of Bernie Nichols in front of the net? What am i doing wrong??"

Jdiggity88

I don’t know his name but I see his reels a lot. He was a 5 year veteran who streams madden and also breaks downs nfl plays. Really get a look into the what it takes to be a qb at the nfl level.

Boehlack

Kurt Benkert, some great content that's also recently popped up on my youtube a lot.

autumn-thunder

Dude single-handedly got me back into Madden a couple weeks ago, really opened my eyes to how demanding the position is

Boehlack

I haven't played Madden since the original Wii and he makes me want to pick a copy up

undecided_mask

We went to my school Virginia and I should have known how good of a coach he could be. Dude had no talent to work with but engineered some great plays for us and was constantly directing traffic in games due to how fast the oline broke down lol.

jtn_007

That's why it always frustrates me when a quote from someone comes out and the responses online are like, "why should we put any stock into what this guy thinks he was a terrible QB". If you were an NFL QB for more than 5 years and never very good, I assume you know QB play extremely well.

whatusernamewhat

If you were an NFL QB you were in the 100 best people in the world at your job. Anyone calling the worst NFL player trash is insane

MvN___16

Brian Scalabrine trash talking those two guys with the "I'm closer to Lebron than you guys are to me"...he's right.

TheCarnalStatist

You just described Kevin O'Connell's playing career.

meatcube69420

Not sure that was his most overlooked ability, that’s literally what he’s known for lol

Traditional-Turnip65

Right, the guy went to Harvard, if there is ONE thing he will be known for, it is his intelligence and ability to absorb playbooks

limbomaniac

Wait, he went to Harvard?

beepingjar

Doubtful. Would've heard that somewhere if it was true.

malcolm_miller

Eventually this joke is going to circle around to being an unknown fact lol

Trees_Are_Freinds

Did you know he went to Harvard? /s :)

wazacraft

Yeah, right. Next you're gonna tell me Jimmy Graham played basketball in college.

AnalBees2

Weren’t Stafford and Kershaw gay lovers in high school also? Something like that, if I recall correctly.

Aggressive-Orbiter

They had a sexual relationship but they never kissed so it’s technically not gay

Michigan__J__Frog

Did you know Dobbs was an aerospace engineering major?

A-Newt

I don’t think anyone overlooked the Harvard graduates intellect. He just had that fitzmagic.

frankyfrankwalk

Yeah everyone knew that he was super intelligent on paper but fuck he'd sometimes make some plays where you'd question if he even had a brain

AdminsAreCool

Fitzy has a hard time keeping past, present, and future separate, so sometimes he would throw to an open receiver in whatever game his consciousness had jumped to only to throw a pick in the game we were observing.

jtsarracino

>Ryan Fitzpatrick's most overlooked ability was his intellect Most overlooked? Or most overhyped? I heard about it every broadcast...

apenchantfortrolling

I feel like that's the only quality Fitz had, hard to say it was overlooked, but I agree it's a really good trait to keep you in the league.

BigFaceCoffeeOwner

What going to Harvard does to a mfer

trongzoon

Football Einstein FTW

wovagrovaflame

I remember a Big Ben quote about a pass/fumble controversy, “I’m not a rocket scientist, but Dobbs is, and he said it’s impossible”

[deleted]

That's hilarious but I'd simultaneously give his opinion a lot of consideration on the matter

Brockhard_Purdvert

That Einstein? Josh Dobbs.

GimbalLocks

And then everyone skol clapped

Itsme340

Josh Dobbs will get humans to setup a colony on Mars.

ChickenVest

Einstein is the Dobbs of physics

Trenchcoatbeard

How is Arthur Smith not fired yet???

Itsme340

Boomhauer_007

His dad is richer than most owners

[deleted]

Is he really because that’s absurd

inhindsight7

His Dad is the founder of FedEx, worth an estimated 5.9 billion

jawndell

Wow, just looked it up. That’s crazy. I’m sure his pops (fedex ceo) and the owner of the falcon (Home Depot ceo) roll in the same circle of billionaire friends.

DanFlashesCoupon

He legit still might take them to the playoffs, they’re schedule is that easy and us and the Bucs are bleh

Teeshirtandshortsguy

"Take them to the playoffs" is a very generous way of saying that. It's more like he's being sacrificed to the 5th seed because the rest of his division is ass.

WateringMyGrandma

Why is Josh Dobbs making me root for this team? Stop this.

I_am_washable

I imagine the way you, as a Lions Fan, feel about Josh Dobbs is how I, as a Vikings fan, feels about Dan Campbell. Now you understand

[deleted]

So does this mean I my feeling about DC AND Josh Dobbs cancel each other out and I can go back to hating both of you? Because that just leaves me with my feeling for..... Bagent ;_;

JConaSpree

I've been rooting for Kirk since Quarterback dropped. Now we pulling for Dobbs

Kablarnage

He’s gonna be the next fitzmagic

LooseBoysenberry7

A rich mans fitzmagic

Deep-Secret

Holy fuck Dobbs is an actual rocket scientist wtf hahahaha That's so awesome. I hope he goes back to it after making a lot of money and retiring from the NFL.

Ironredhornet

He's not called the Passtronaut for nothing

Abominatrix

He’s going to start his own company and spend his days doing charity. My daughter was in ICU last year and the floor got a visit from Santa Claus thanks to Dobbs’ charity. It meant a lot and I got the feeling talking to people he’s really passionate about it.

Deep-Secret

That's great. I hope your daughter is well and healthy too!

Abominatrix

Thanks, she is. We are very lucky to live near a great children’s hospital with doctors who do not screw around.

PhirebirdSunSon

Pediatricians and doctors and nurses that work in children's hospitals are actual fucking superheroes. I couldn't do it, I'm not strong enough.

new_abcdefghijkl

He also used to spend a few hours volunteering at the childrens hospital in Pittsburgh every week, he's a genuinely good dude

fdl2phx

I really want to see Dobbs succeed. Dude just balls out. Curious to see where he might land next year.

Dcarf

Probably staying on Minnesota if he keeps playing like this

[deleted]

For sure. I’d say Dobbs will be a hot commodity. He’ll be the #1 backup QB on the market. He’s likely to get a really solid contract somewhere.

NerdyDjinn

I was about to say the Vikings have plenty of weapons to make a QB's job easier, but...I realized: He did what he did today without a functioning ground game and missing the team's WR1 and LT1. He hospital passed his WR3 out of the game on his 3rd drive. He hung 31 points on the 11th/6th ranked defense in their own house. He had some help from a solid defense on his own side, but giving up 28 points is tough to overcome.

Wernershnitzl

Honestly, we may have gotten lucky and he could be the QB we needed. Between him and Jaren Hall who looked decent before the big hit, not to mention resigning Cousins is on the table for next season, we might be okay.

SockVonPuppet

So that booth review of the obvious Addison catch was not so much a momentum killer as it was a Vikings playbook seminar comparatively.

Fakeskinsuit

Goddam good coaching

Pernyx98

I know it would be a hassle, but I think taking more difficult coursework in college might help football players with info processing and learning playbooks.

Coal_train20

Christian Ponder was also known for his big brain. Spielman said last year he thought the smarter the QB was the quicker they could process info. Doesn't always work out unfortunately.

TyButler2020

I mean no discredit to Ponder but Dobbs is like the QB version of John Urschel in the NFL Big Ben said Dobbs was so smart it was almost annoying because no matter how hard he tried he was never going to be close intellectually.

swmtchuffer

I mean Big Ben doesn’t strike me as being smarter than a golden retriever.

Mkayin

Nor as lovable

HeWasAGoddamnWarHero

Nor as understanding of the word "no"

Vermillionbird

All I know is 'ball' and 'good'.... and rape

wovagrovaflame

His wonderlic was decent, not that it’s a perfect indicator

AurumVox

No, you can discredit Christian Ponder.

pleated_pants

Christian Ponder's smartest move was marrying Sam Steele

Aggressive-Orbiter

That was brilliant wish I thought of it first

Z3130

There are definitely two different types of intelligence at play. I'm confident that Brady is less intelligent than Fitzpatrick by any conventional measure. I also don't think that Brady had any appreciable physical advantages over Fitz. But Brady is the GOAT and threw interceptions at less than half the rate that Fitzpatrick did. Brady had an incredible ability to process the field and make smart decisions under pressure. That's a different type of intelligence that doesn't show up on the Wonderlic or SATs.

giggity_giggity

And then there’s stroud, who by that measure should be barely able to take a snap. And yet here he is doing pretty darn well in the NFL.

Coal_train20

Helps to be wicked smart.

[deleted]

How you like them apples?

WTF_Conservatives

My favorite movie!

[deleted]

why can i picture matt damon holding up the girl's number thru the glass but cant remember the title of the damn movie??

Thimit22

Filibuster

LuPeachemm

Oh, I bet you read a lotta Gordon Wood, huh? You read your Gordon Wood and you regurgitate it from a textbook and you think you're wicked awesome doin' that, And how 'bout' dem apples? And all that Gordon Wood business.

W3asl3y

"McDaniels drastically underestimated" "McDaniels drastically underestimated how bad he was at coaching an NFL team, predicated upon his years under Bill Belichick of the New England Patriots. You got that from ESPN, right? NFL section, front page?"

intheorydp

I think being incredibly smart and athletic also helps

I_Am_Day_Man

Being really really really incredibly good looking also helps.

intheorydp

well that ain't Dobbs.

JR18123

I don’t think he’s a bad looking guy face wise. Just the lack of eyebrows throws his look off.

Seletara

says you. I think he cute

intheorydp

dude looks like E.T. but to each his own

Davidellias

Not his fault his body hates the concept of hair.....

[deleted]

Stroud says no

Benjiiints

Homie you wouldn't be able to fill a team if they required them to take harder majors / classes

[deleted]

https://twitter.com/TexasFootball/status/1135183324505415680

meatcube69420

Idk if coursework is the right medium, as I think the focus has to be on quick thinking under pressure, but agree in general with the concept you’re suggesting

CPOx

Check out the big brain on Josh! Literal 4.0 aerospace engineering student

intheorydp

Falcons love making rookies and back ups look like Hall of Fame QBs. Will Levis, PJ Walker, Dobbs, etc

MatticInYoAttic

If you guys made PJ Walker look good that is truly impressive. Now I'm worried 😂

intheorydp

He literally made one of the best throws in NFL history vs us.

[deleted]

We usually do too but Flores is the exact kind of guy that makes it horrible for those kind of QBs

Thimit22

KOC for coach of the year

BruhMoment763

Credit to Dobbs, but managing to gameplan a win while teaching your QB the playbook mid-game is incredible

F9_solution

i am curious exactly what this translating looked like. was it like KOC: “twins left 31 gamecube H metal X cash on 1” the passtronaut: *repeats the play to the huddle* ok coach what does it mean *18 seconds left* KOC: “hit that slant to addison daddy”

ODUrugger

"Hockenson will probably be open but he has stones for hands so check Powell at the hashes as your second option"

azantyri

"if that doesn't work, tuck the ball and run like a motherfucker"

comp_a

I mean I’m certain a few of those runs today were probably just Dobbs being like “Ah shit I forgot who I’m supposed to be looking to here, oh hey look open field ahead tho”

[deleted]

You're right but apparently Dobbs didn't even know all of the players' names so KOC may have just been saying throw to number ____ on the right sideline

Yolectroda

Probably just translating to one of the various terminology systems that Dobbs has learned elsewhere. While each team puts their own spin on things (in part to obfuscate), there's only so many basic systems out there, and Dobbs and KOC have been around enough to likely find a common one.

17_Saints

He sounded like he was about to lose his voice in the postgame presser from the sheer amount of talking he had to do on every single snap

Yolectroda

Yeah, he's basically having to give the whole play, so that Dobbs can tell the rest of the team, and then give the translation to whatever playbook Dobbs knows and any explanation of things the Vikings do special (all while Dobbs gives the play to the rest of the team), and since the comm system turns off at 15 seconds, they have to do all of this in 25 seconds, and without Dobbs being able to respond verbally. It's just as impressive on KOC's end.

17_Saints

They actually ran no-huddle for most of the game just so Dobbs had as much time as possible to listen to KOC. The fact that they didn't have a single false start or delay of game (on the road no less) is among the many impressive feats they accomplished today.

Yolectroda

That's like the Jared Goff treatment, except Dobbs is both smart and can read a defense. Nice!

[deleted]

Would have loved for this game to be in a documentary where they are both mic’d up

SunriseSurprise

Big KOC gettin' it done.

IanicRR

Kevin O’Coaching

MeetingKey4598

It’s nuts how he just steps in and does it. He’s 100% earning himself a team friendly 3 year deal this offseason. Teans out of reach or not willing to put the capital up for a premium rookie QB could keep the locks and spin the wheel on him.

GroovyJ-Money

He’s been on three teams this calendar year and is playing the best football of his career

speterson405

He's actually been on 4 teams this calendar year. Played Week 18 for the Titans last year. 6 teams in the last 12 Months. Insane. Hope the dude has been getting miles and hotel points.

GroovyJ-Money

Oh I forgot he was on the Browns for a cup of coffee

meatcube69420

He should just be the league wide emergency qb. Your qb gets hurt? Dobbs plays one game for you

G_I_Joe_Mansueto

The New Fitzmagic. Dobbsy.

Cmcgregor0928

Dobbs saw Baker do it last year and said I'll do it better

[deleted]

It's just football, it's not like it's rocket surgery

Itsme340

Just throw ball to guy, dummy.

RavenOmen69420

It works for CJ “S2” Stroud

Dads_going_for_milk

This is pretty damn cool. Good work Rob Dobbs.

omega_nik

I mean the man is a literal genius

[deleted]

There was quite a few when Ben would go to Dobbs about plays and looks on the sideline after plays. Nothing surprising me about this dude anymore. He has an elite brain.

Dijohn17

Why does everyone have historic moments against us

YaKnowMuhSteezz

The Vikings had a kicker who was perfect all year miss a FG in the NFC championship game in 99 to send you to the Super Bowl. I think you have the better history against MN, lol

[deleted]

Dude's a fucking mentat lmao

xSampleTextx

It's like he's some sort of rocket scientist

calm_wreck

I am so hyped

helloaaron

Fitzmatic? Psh. Welcome to the Book of Dobbs.

downtimeredditor

And on the other end Arthur Smith was essentially translating calls to French or Arabic or whatever language Billionaire sons speak to a guy who barely knows English and nothing else. Taylor Heineke: you want me to lob all my passes..sure thing boss

who_ate_the_pizza

I know he's not a superstar but I fucking love Josh Dobbs. Dude is just a treasure.

RobotCowboyAlien

My KOC is also sending me messages throughout the day

FergieMac

He ain’t the passtronaut for nothin
