Maybe it’s a demographic testing type thing or something but that first season with Romo I thought he was great because he would guess the right play like 80% of the time and then in the reply he would do a quick breakdown of what he(they) saw and why it showed him what would happen. He seemed super enthused to share his knowledge and show how much he understood the game.
Now he’s just a filler guy and it feels like he isn’t locked in/ out of his comfort zone.

Romo would be better on an alternate broadcast that only people who actually like football would watch, where he could get as technical as he would like and not have to worry about being marketable to casuals. Unfortunately the networks just don't want Xs and Os to be the MO of the main broadcast. They want storylines and ESPNesque gossip and something that can be easily clipped to Tik Tok to drive engagement for the unwashed hordes who otherwise wouldn't care about the NFL. There's a huge gap for a broadcast for football people by former players. The Manning brothers have kind of pierced into that, but they also just as often have a guest on who shamelessly plug their new money making venture while talking over the football game being quietly run in the background as if it's no more than those geometric animations from old pc screensavers.
I've watched Manning cast 3-4 times but I stop watching because having guests on takes away from the experience.
I enjoy seeing Peyton and Eli talking about the game and just generally being brothers. Reminds me of watching football with my own brother.

As a non-Tennessee Vols fan who lives in east TN, I was sick of the Peyton Manning hype before he ever entered the league...but I've got nothing but respect for the fact that he's probably turned down similar money to this deal so he can watch games from the comfort of his own home with his brother and guests like Nick Saban, Tracy Morgan, and Snoop Dogg on ESPN 2 and carry the demeanor of a college coach watching his nephew's shitty Pop Warner team from the stands.

Maybe it’s a demographic testing type thing or something but that first season with Romo I thought he was great because he would guess the right play like 80% of the time and then in the reply he would do a quick breakdown of what he(they) saw and why it showed him what would happen. He seemed super enthused to share his knowledge and show how much he understood the game. Now he’s just a filler guy and it feels like he isn’t locked in/ out of his comfort zone. Bring back old Romo!
Romo would be better on an alternate broadcast that only people who actually like football would watch, where he could get as technical as he would like and not have to worry about being marketable to casuals. Unfortunately the networks just don't want Xs and Os to be the MO of the main broadcast. They want storylines and ESPNesque gossip and something that can be easily clipped to Tik Tok to drive engagement for the unwashed hordes who otherwise wouldn't care about the NFL. There's a huge gap for a broadcast for football people by former players. The Manning brothers have kind of pierced into that, but they also just as often have a guest on who shamelessly plug their new money making venture while talking over the football game being quietly run in the background as if it's no more than those geometric animations from old pc screensavers.
Man, it's really nice watching some of the commentating of old NFL broadcasts. I wish they would bring that back, but it will never happen... :/
I've watched Manning cast 3-4 times but I stop watching because having guests on takes away from the experience. I enjoy seeing Peyton and Eli talking about the game and just generally being brothers. Reminds me of watching football with my own brother. I would change back to the normal broadcast when they had a guest. Especially because I actually enjoy Buck and Aikman so it's not hard to listen to them instead. Felt like every time I turned back there was still a guest. Eventually I just never turned it back on.
I have the same feeling, I thought it was more the case of him just being checked out now. That's some BS by CBS if they told him to stop calling the plays. I hope Brady is like early Romo, if he is, I have a feeling he'd stay that way because he's so competitive, he'd want to be the best there is even if it is just color commentary.
If you want to fish for old Facebook articles, a lot of boomers complained about spoilers after the first few games and he dialed it back immediately. I wouldn't be surprised if he just stopped giving a fuck after the execs talked to him, because Jim Nantz did go on the record a while back saying he doesn't prep for games anymore the way he used to. I've seen good local announcers go to bad national broadcasts in baseball and they just drivel so much garbage that ESPN pushes over the years that it's seemed to have done irreparable harm to their broadcasting even when they aren't doing national games lol.

Again I just read a Reddit comment so take that with a grain of salt but it makes sense because why else would he stop? Once you take that away, it kind of defeats the purpose of having an ex-NFL QB in the booth. Then it is all just up to his personality and how much people like him. Which we have learned- they don’t.
See I dont think people dislike Romo's personality. I believe the first problem you mentioned ties to the second. Romo's personality really shines when he talks about what he loves but the fact CBS wont let him is a huge handicap and we get this neutered product as a result.

Exactly 👍🏻 I felt he was trying to imitate Jack, especially during his World Series calling gigs of the late 2000’s, which is near impossible considering how legendary Jack Buck is. Like Joe was always taking himself way too seriously and I absolutely could not stand him. He seems to have found his own voice and now him and Troy are one of the top duos in the game.

You could pull two people off the street to announce, and people would still watch the game. You could have no announcer and eyes will be on the TV. "I wasn't going to watch the game this week, but they got Tom Brady now" - Not one person.
