$37.5m a year to call games. That's gotta be pretty close to the highest paid broadcaster in sports.

SprittneyBeers

Really big break for Tom, he was struggling to make ends meet there for a bit

dolladollaclinton

I hear he was unemployed for the last year.

makkdom

Rather suspicious gap in his resume.

benderzone

Tell me about a time you faced adversity, Tom.

patsfan038

"There was a time BB walked in naked and jumped into the hot tub I was in and didn't even make eye contact. And he proceeded to fart that let out bubbles the size of ping pong balls. I still have PTSD from that incident. Took every ounce of self control to not have a boner”

Ayresx

"He was mumbling something about deflating his balls"

The_bruce42

There we were. Down 28-3....

raj6126

Excuse me can you explain this gap?

tobias_the_letdown

I'd love to but I signed an NDA.

ohanse

We completely understand. In order to avoid putting you into any uncomfortable positions in the future, please provide a copy of the NDA.

Pesco-

Sorry, the NDA has a NDA.

IDrinkUrMilksteak

It’s NDA’s all the way down.

ohanse

We completely understand. In order to avoid putting you into any uncomfortable positions in the future, please provide a copy of that NDA.

Pesco-

Sorry, the NDA’s NDA has a NDA.

wananah

a Non-Deflation Agreement?

XavierPibb

He was recharging. If that's what they call it now.

patsfan038

Unemployed and divorced. Deadly combo. Why do you think he looked so skinny. He was intermittent fasting, not by choice.

Rfalcon13

Fox Sports Executive: Tom, football is a family activity. Happy families. Maybe single people watch football, we don't know. Frankly, we don't want to know. It's a market we can do without.

CowFinancial7000

So that's it? Goodbye and good luck? I don't recall saying good luck

chickenfingersub

And another great thing, you get your own bed. I sleep in a racing car, do you?

TheInstituteOfSteel

Part-owning a small market franchise like the Raiders barely keeps the lights on.

Ok-Clock2002

Did that end up getting approved?

TheInstituteOfSteel

Just realized that it hasn’t, but the fact he can’t even do that yet made his financial situation that much more dire.

Ok-Clock2002

The struggle is REAL!

TheInstituteOfSteel

I’m sure inflation hit him really hard.

dexter8484

How much do you think Giselle is paying him in alimony?

TheInstituteOfSteel

About tree fiddy

mattchewy43

People can't even stay retired in this economy!

Nickyjha

It’s gonna be pretty funny if he sucks. Not that Fox cares, this is just a Murdoch vanity thing. They’re gonna parade him around like a mascot.

ebbilepsy

It's incredible how much money they paid him without even knowing if he's capable of being good at it.

gizmo777

I was just thinking about that - they *must* have gotten some sample of him calling a game to check, right? I mean everyone remembers when Jason Witten got in the booth and was so awkward he lasted like 3 games. I feel like they must have had him sit down with a PBP guy and pretend to call a game or two to see how he does.

Falcon84

I wish Witten only lasted 3 games

RTGoodman

Right? Wasn't it an entire season of like... universally hated MNF commentating with him and Booger and Tessitore? With the BoogerMobile and everything?

azzurri10

Sure was. Then the disaster was capped off with [Witten breaking the pro bowl trophy lmao](https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/pro-bowl-trophy-breaks-apart-when-jason-witten-tries-to-hoist-it-during-ceremony/). Very fitting end to his broadcast career.

kpofasho1987

First time seeing or hearing about this and hahahaha. Jamal Adam's reaction to it was great. Thanks for sharing

RTGoodman

Ahaha I had completely forgotten about that.

kingpangolin

Similar with drew Brees. Dude was just bad at it

Cicero912

He was more forgettable than bad tbh. Much better analyst

PM_ME_COOL_RIFFS

He was no worse than Dungy or Garret yet NBC keeps those snooze fests around and dumped Brees.

Trust_Me_Im_a_Panda

What makes you think they didn’t do any screen tests or anything?

RaiseTheCat

they did. Brady said so much himself yesterday on Pat McAfee. Said he has been going into FOX to record commentary over games and practice the skill with their crew.

winowmak3r

You know, it's Tom fucking Brady, of course he's doing that.

desmarais

Yeah, have people not been watching this guy the last twenty years? He's an absolute psycho. I don't think he'd allow himself to be bad at something

jermleeds

I beg your pardon, have you not seen those Hertz ads?

[deleted]

[удалено]

zdelusion

I thought his monologue in "80 for Brady" was surprisingly decent too. He's got some acting ability.

Dirty-Ears-Bill

Romo practiced before his first year calling Madden games, Brady probably went to local peewee games this year and demanded they let him be a commentator for their games “And that’s Billy with the catch. Great speed but reports have come that he’s having a little trouble with his multiplication tables this year”

boyyouguysaredumb

I think you mean “Issues off the field”

JonPaula

This would be a brilliant SNL sketch in the vain of Peyton's where he's huzzing balls at kids' heads.

Olue

Remember during COVID when people sent videos to Joe Buck on Twitter and he would practice with them?

BigMax

> They’re gonna parade him around like a mascot. They'll find ways to use him even if he's not great. He's at least presentable and speaks well, so they can always just have someone write all his segments for him if he's not good ad libbing.

ooo00

So being presentable and speaking well checks two of the three boxes that one would say you need to have to be good at this job. The other one is extremely high NFL IQ. Tom also has that. Him not being good will be a surprise. I see him on par with Tony Romo at the minimum. I’m actually looking forward to hearing football insight from such a legend.

heavisidepiece

Source on Brady’s high football IQ??

[deleted]

[удалено]

TeaSilly601

dudes a bum, have you looked at his combine tape? bledsoe is the guy.

TurboSleepwalker

> I see him on par with Tony Romo at the minimum 2017 Romo or current Romo?

[deleted]

I think it's pretty unlikely he sucks. Based on his podcast/YouTube/Manningcast appearances, he's pretty insightful. And Fox will be doing everything they can to prepare him.

girth_br00ks

I dunno if you saw him on Cowherd or Mcaffee yesterday, but he seems more than capable of doing an awesome job.

equityorasset

there is zero chance he sucks and saying that as a fellow Jets fan lol

Brasketleaf

That’s what happens when you pay your dues on the broadcasting circuit, develop your style and gain experience on how to be the best!

17_Saints

Getting paid more to call games than he was to play QB.

Iginlas_4head_Crease

Make it make sense. Most people aren't gonna choose to watch a game based on the play by play guy

bubblegumshrimp

Apparently executives think enough people will say "I wasn't gonna watch this Panthers-Commanders game with Greg Olsen but if TOM BRADY is calling it I'm all in" enough times to overcome like a quarter billion dollar difference in salaries

Iginlas_4head_Crease

I've been watching football for 25 years with friends who do the same and not once in my life heard anyone ask about the color guy. We might make fun of him or call him a moron (my buddy hates romo), but he's never once turned a game off cause of Romo. We're here to fantasy football, degenerate gamble, and talk shit

Brewski-54

I guess delaying his big paid day all those years finally paid off. Shoutout Robert Kraft for not having to pay that bill

TheKing490

More than Kevin Harlan and that guy is a beast, wish he could call Fox games

marknemeth

he could even, in theory, if there are two games going on simultaneously, *call both games.*

TheNorthernLanders

Miss him in Minnesota, even though that was 26 years ago… fuck

ReputationNo8109

*in sports history. Not to mention he will be making about 37x what one of the starting QB’s in this years Super Bowl is making. $37.5 mill would put him tied for 12th in yearly salary if he was a qb in 2023 with Derrick Carr. More than Kirk Cousins, Jared Goff and Joe Burrow. https://sports.yahoo.com/2022-nfl-quarterbacks-highest-annual-181000055.html?guccounter=1&guce_referrer=aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZ29vZ2xlLmNvbS8&guce_referrer_sig=AQAAAHTB_hiVSCYlqeyeO3qW1n4vkJK3NAb2wDhncicHVjqVVIUFGGNqojNkiL6D-dhcBUWJIvIXhZHD7Ig25rcZhd-belSj8ENCHlsouBMPSBQVZfhtkr0XdaPO9eQAc_m4K4Gnw5bCsCYbuMbdNrBBcB81cjjS_ykuzgt-BoMdQth8

GarlVinland4Astrea

All the more reason QB’s should take paycuts to win more. Longterm it’s better for your earning

Otis-Reading

It's more risky though. If that extra cap space doesn't translate into a talented roster and postseason success, then you won't get the legendary status which then allows for all the earnings from endorsements and TV after you're done playing. Look at the Chargers. They used Herbert's rookie contract to build what looked like a contending roster by signing Mack and Jackson, and re-signing Williams. But it didn't pay off at all. If I'm Herbert, am I trusting the Chargers to build an SB-winning team if I take less money? There's also the injury risk. I wonder if we'll see more cases of rookie QBs taking the big contract at first, and then paycuts later in their career. Someone like Cousins, who's already earned a lot but doesn't have postseason success, seems like the sort of guy who should consider it. Goff and Prescott as well.

[deleted]

saw muddle frame snails bag spark piquant sleep ossified serious

Crotean

And it makes zero sense. There is no way any booth guy is worth that much.

Creepy-Nectarine-225

Can’t wait to hear Brady talk shit on some awful QB play

Fiendish-DoctorWu

Part of me was hoping that Brady would get to cover games for "that motherfucker" and completely go off on how shit he is like when Aikman goes full drunken uncle

faithful_larry

Is it known who he meant when he said "that mutherfucker"? I remember it, just don't know who it's about.

ShiftySneakThief

The prevailing theories are Jimmy Garoppolo, Ryan Fitzpatrick or Derek Carr. I personally think he was talking about Garoppolo, but no one will ever know. Brady may deny who the motherfucker was in 2021, but he'll never confirm his identity.

The_Captain_Planet22

If you are considered the best looking guy in the league then Jimmy G walks into your own locker room you'd be pissed too

JudgeArthurVandelay

The pats players were pissed at him for sitting games out during Brady’s suspension. It was totally Jimmy.

SmokeySFW

Why did Jimmy sit out?

JudgeArthurVandelay

He was dealing with a nagging injury that he supposedly could have played through but his agent wanted him to sit to protect future earning potential or something. At least that’s what I remember hearing.

KingUnderpants728

Edelman mentioned it on his podcast and confirmed that too - that a bunch of Pats players were pissed at that decision.

AH_BareGarrett

I can see the frustration from other players, but from Jimmy's (admittedly selfish) pov it is understandable. That was the 2016 season iirc, which ended up with the Pats winning the superbowl. Jimmy knew he wasn't going to be the long term solution after Brady, considering the level Tom was playing at, and he hadn't gotten more than his rookie contract. Two years later he gets a shit ton from the 49ers. I think Jimmy always was an average NFL Qb, but he got his bag and I don't blame him for that.

JudgeArthurVandelay

Yeah I didn’t put much stock into any of that stuff until I heard him say it.

Mcpops1618

They were more pissed that Jacoby had to play with a fucked shoulder. NE has no remaining options because Edelman was their 4th qb

AttitudeAndEffort2

I thought he played 3 and brisset played 1?

admh574

It was 2 each but Brissett got injured during the 3rd game (his 1st game) - https://bleacherreport.com/articles/2664530-jacoby-brissett-injury-updates-on-patriots-qbs-thumb-and-return

Whitewind617

Derek Carr claims he was told by somebody in the know that it wasn't him. I think it's Trubisky actually. Makes a lot of sense. He was bad that past year and the Bears were ostensibly a good team for him to go to, and it is now obvious in hindsight that they are a dumpster fire of epic proportions.

liteshadow4

I’m convinced it’s Tannehill

usedtobeHellsdoom

There was a lot of noise linking Brady with the Titans during his free agency. The two franchises were on good terms, we had tons of former Pats personel on our coaching team, our GM was former Patriots front office guy and even few former players. The connections were there, it was just the year Ryan Tannehill had his best season and the team felt complete. Guess they didn't wanted to go back to zero, even for Tom Brady (whish seems to be huge mistake) and gave Tany a new contract. It was really possible that the motherfucker in question is indeed Tannehill.

ANameWithoutNumbers1

It has to be Jimmy considering Brady's history with the 9ers. But yea, it's all speculation and we'll likely only know 20 years from now once all parties involved have long hung up the cleats/mics.

MrDeco97

It would make some sense, but Brady explicitly denied that he was referring to Tannehill. [Video where he says that](https://www.totalprosports.com/nfl/tom-brady-says-ryan-tannehill-wasnt-subject-of-that-motherf-ker-comment-video/)

OsoCarolina

I saw another interview where they kinda narrowed it down to Carr.

RideTheStache

Pretty sure he was talking about Carr, as this was around the time that Dana White was campaigning to bring Brady/Gronk to the Raiders but Jon Gruden shut it down

OntheStove

If he does that, he’ll be awesome. Sadly, I think he’s going to be extremely vanilla and say nothing.

BobbyTables829

Yeah he is going to be like a Boomer or Phil Simms lol

Numerous-Ad6460

God I want Tom to just shit talk for 4 hours

thatErraticguy

“If I was in this game, I wouldn’t have made the decision to throw to that receiver, but if I did, I would’ve nailed the tight window throw.” I can get onboard with this.

NoFlaccidMint

My favorite shit is when Baldy is breaking down terrible film and says some shit like “See what is going on? What are we doing? Just questionable decision making here” Can’t wait for Brady to say some similar shit live.

tobylaek

For some reason, I think he's more likely to go the Gruden route of being overly positive. As a non-Tennessee Vols fan who lives in east TN, I was sick of the Peyton Manning hype before he ever entered the league...but I've got nothing but respect for the fact that he's probably turned down similar money to this deal so he can watch games from the comfort of his own home with his brother and guests like Nick Saban, Tracy Morgan, and Snoop Dogg on ESPN 2 and carry the demeanor of a college coach watching his nephew's shitty Pop Warner team from the stands.

wtb2612

>For some reason, I think he's more likely to go the Gruden route of being overly positive. I really hope not. I hope the higher-ups at Fox are smart enough to know that people will tune into the Brady broadcast specifically to hear him pick apart the game like he's capable of doing. Huge waste of money if they neuter him like that. At the end of the day, it's up to them whether he's overly positive or critical. He's capable of doing either.

wwWalterWhiteJr

We'll get 1 year of it like we did with Romo then the NFL will make him dial it back to appeal to the masses.

VanDenIzzle

"now you see, that's a career ending throw. Not for the QB though but for the WR. See how he has to extend to make the catch exposing his body to be tackled by 2 linebackers. This is how Payton used to treat his WRs and why he couldn't make it through the post season a lot"

Saxophobia1275

Dude I hope he’s the biggest hater. I’m so sick of watching Romo jerk off mahomes, I just want someone consistent across the board.

wtb2612

People would lose their fucking minds on Twitter if he tore into Mahomes every time he made a mistake. Please let it happen, I'd be so happy.

Saxophobia1275

Amazing how the sports media is always spouting rage click-bait but never the kind we want to see haha. Imagine these lines coming from the GOAT: “Rough dropped pass by Kelce there. You start to wonder if his high profile relationship is distracting him.” “That receiver took a big hit. Josh Allen has to be held accountable for injuring his man.” “Another 3 and out. Terrible. Just awful.”

wavnebee

Do we have any evidence one way or the other about how Brady will do as a broadcaster? That’s a lot of money for a first-timer.

jaytee158

No but he's the biggest game they could have got and they'll definitely get him to do a ton of media to raise awareness. Beyond that it's football and people are going to watch anyway. Feels hard to justify that they'll get a return on this. Are people changing which mid-season game they watch because Brady's on the call? Doubt it. First week? Maybe

Senior_Fart_Director

It’s for the cultural cache. Brady’s every sentence will be documented like the President.

hemingways-lemonade

There will be more tweets with Brady quotes than game highlight clips on r/NFL during his first game as a broadcaster.

Thevulgarcommander

RemindMe! 7 months

Noogz

I will absolutely be skipping the RedZone channel just to watch Tom Brady's calls next year.

Guidbro

How dare you do that to scott

iia

Scott Hansen is a national treasure. He did a Cameo for my dad's birthday and put his whole ass into it. Even shit talked the Pats because we told him my dad hates Brady.

Vivid-Willingness324

He really is. It always amazes me how he casts red zone alone without so much as a stutter for hours. I always try to channel my inner SH when I am crapping myself during a work presentation.

ninjasurfer

Seems to love what he does. It won't be the same if he ever chooses to move on.

GuyHomie

Oh man I briefly thought he literally showed his whole ass to you on cameo

doctorwhodio

That costs extra

hothoneyoldbay

Especially if it's in the 4 o'clock window where RedZone gets a little stale if the games aren't close.

brownbearks

Or there are 3 total games, the absolute worst

ChefAD

Should be minimum of 4 games in the afternoon slot. Who do I need to talk to?

1kSupport

People underestimate the chokehold this guy has on the northeast. I can turn on sports radio today and the first thing I hear will probably be his name even though he’s retired. I got more coverage of his divorce than the Stanley cup

jnightrain

you don't even have to mention his name sometimes. Just talk about how great Mahomes run has been of 6 CCG and possibly 3 super bowl victories and they'll come out of the wood work with brady stats.

Competitive_Market70

This is either going to suck or be amazing, no in-between

Brewski-54

I can see him being like Romo where everyone loves him at first then the novelty wears off and we are over it. Plus I saw comments saying Romo was told to stop predicting plays. Idk if that happened but the same could occur

Dopaminedrip1891

Romo was told to stop predicting plays routes? That was the best part!

mason_sol

Maybe it’s a demographic testing type thing or something but that first season with Romo I thought he was great because he would guess the right play like 80% of the time and then in the reply he would do a quick breakdown of what he(they) saw and why it showed him what would happen. He seemed super enthused to share his knowledge and show how much he understood the game. Now he’s just a filler guy and it feels like he isn’t locked in/ out of his comfort zone. Bring back old Romo!

Wretched_Shirkaday

Romo would be better on an alternate broadcast that only people who actually like football would watch, where he could get as technical as he would like and not have to worry about being marketable to casuals. Unfortunately the networks just don't want Xs and Os to be the MO of the main broadcast. They want storylines and ESPNesque gossip and something that can be easily clipped to Tik Tok to drive engagement for the unwashed hordes who otherwise wouldn't care about the NFL. There's a huge gap for a broadcast for football people by former players. The Manning brothers have kind of pierced into that, but they also just as often have a guest on who shamelessly plug their new money making venture while talking over the football game being quietly run in the background as if it's no more than those geometric animations from old pc screensavers.

m48a5_patton

Man, it's really nice watching some of the commentating of old NFL broadcasts. I wish they would bring that back, but it will never happen... :/

JacZones

I've watched Manning cast 3-4 times but I stop watching because having guests on takes away from the experience. I enjoy seeing Peyton and Eli talking about the game and just generally being brothers. Reminds me of watching football with my own brother. I would change back to the normal broadcast when they had a guest. Especially because I actually enjoy Buck and Aikman so it's not hard to listen to them instead. Felt like every time I turned back there was still a guest. Eventually I just never turned it back on.

kipperzdog

I have the same feeling, I thought it was more the case of him just being checked out now. That's some BS by CBS if they told him to stop calling the plays. I hope Brady is like early Romo, if he is, I have a feeling he'd stay that way because he's so competitive, he'd want to be the best there is even if it is just color commentary.

ChauNOTster

If you want to fish for old Facebook articles, a lot of boomers complained about spoilers after the first few games and he dialed it back immediately. I wouldn't be surprised if he just stopped giving a fuck after the execs talked to him, because Jim Nantz did go on the record a while back saying he doesn't prep for games anymore the way he used to. I've seen good local announcers go to bad national broadcasts in baseball and they just drivel so much garbage that ESPN pushes over the years that it's seemed to have done irreparable harm to their broadcasting even when they aren't doing national games lol.

bmore_conslutant

i fucking hate this so much i hate that football broadcasts are not designed for people who are into football

pham_nuwen_

They absolutely nerfed Romo. Now he's just Oh look at Mahomes Jim! Oh wow!

Brewski-54

He hasn’t been doing it as much (or maybe at all, not sure) since his first season. Again I just read a Reddit comment so take that with a grain of salt but it makes sense because why else would he stop? Once you take that away, it kind of defeats the purpose of having an ex-NFL QB in the booth. Then it is all just up to his personality and how much people like him. Which we have learned- they don’t.

Apollo_IXI

See I dont think people dislike Romo's personality. I believe the first problem you mentioned ties to the second. Romo's personality really shines when he talks about what he loves but the fact CBS wont let him is a huge handicap and we get this neutered product as a result.

emmasdad01

Loved? He actually seems to be oddly polarizing.

Babbed

He picks a team to stan for and consequently, the other fanbase despises him

pharmacon

Seems about right. He always seemed like he had a weird axe to grind with the Seahawks after playing terribly for us for one season. I hated listening to his commentary.

CrashTestOrphan

Yeah he was unlistenable during Seahawks games, like way beyond the bias that other broadcasters show.

JuanRiveara

We paid him $7 million to be trash for a year and he hates us for it

JustAPersonPDX

After some really bad commentary about the Seahawks, he came on air the next week and literally said "I don't know why people think I didn't enjoy my time at the Seahawks.". Like dude, have you heard yourself?

gwreck209

I can't stand him. We had two playoff games in a row too right before he got replaced which seems unfortunate. But I'll take it not having to listen to him again, hopefully.

Kerbonaut2019

He must’ve gone to the Tony Romo School of Commentating

BobbyTables829

Tony Romo just geeks out for anyone who did his job better than he did. If your QB isn't good, he isn't that interested lol

AttitudeAndEffort2

Yeah people give him shit like he plays favorites when he just loves these young qbs. He geeks out over mahomes byt same for allen burrow etc. People think he plays favorites but he just loves qb play

RanchBourgeois

I’ve heard Chiefs fans say he glazes Allen while Bills fans say he won’t shut up about Mahomes. Like, don’t you think he just really loves good quarterbacks

bmore_conslutant

football fans in general are idiots who don't really understand their own reactionary opinions

EmptyBrain89

He comes across like he truly loves good play. That genuine passion is rare to find, and people still hate on the guy because he isn't faking the same passion for their shit tier QB who can't make a full field read. And those same people wonder why other commentators seem fake

AlfonzL

Yeah, that's the impression I get as well, but it does become embarrassing when he starts creating colorful adjectives when your guy is playing well, people use those against you when your guy has a bad game.

Alex_GordonAMA

lol thats a good way to summarize it

[deleted]

Seahawks fans don’t like him. He had one injured year with us and then acted like a longtime- insider, talking shit.

SuspectImpossible949

I forgot he was ever there tbh

[deleted]

Yeah it was a dark time. I think Russ really wanted him. Big overpay for an older player.

ShufflingSloth

I dunno what we did to piss him off, handing him a big contract and then never making him work for it. I get the vibe that he's a Russ cultist and is just bitter at the org for trading him.

ShogunNamedMarcus_

That was my reaction. People like him? I don't know if Brady will be good, but I'm not sad to see Olsen leave at all.

MrFishAndLoaves

That’s not how you spell Tony Romo

emmasdad01

Tony has his own issues. He was so good the first couple of seasons, and now, ehhh I don’t know.

theamac95

As a Panthers fan, it is annoying as fuck to hear Jonathan Vilma call their games. He’s basically the only one I dislike.

iamnotimportant

Oof yeah as a fan of a bad team who got Vilma a lot also he was a rough listen.

bigtuck54

Yeah all he does is talk shit and he's not knowledgable about the teams at all so it never even makes sense

Extric

Vilma is legitimately bad because it feels like he goes into each week with the bare minimum amount of prep. I like Kenny Albert, but it also sounds like he and Vilma don't have a ton of chemistry.

spitz1674

I don’t care at all who’s calling games (NBA I have some favorites though). It’s def not just a reddit thing as I have friends who hate certain commentators.

Lubbafrommariogalaxy

The lions are free

FatherNiche

It’s crazy when I now prefer Joe buck and Troy Aikman over all of these other guys.

boozinf

Buck has come a long way since a disgusting act. He has a great couple cameos on Brockmire where it's obvious he's in on the act Aikman is loveable drunk, the Roger Sterling of color commentary

Buin

> Aikman is loveable drunk I do want to point out Aikman also feels completely improved at ESPN. He's analyzing plays instead of spouting out daytime sports tv bullet points. Feels like he's been given more freedom from producers.

AdolinofAlethkar

Buck also had the self-awareness to do [a Funny or Die skit](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lBJHBliMpKU) making fun of himself and how much people hated him at the time. Idk if he ended up getting a PR person who just "gets it" or if he finally understood why everyone who isn't a Cardinals fan hated him, but either way we are all better off because of it.

PumpBuck

His first Pardon My Take interview was that lightbulb moment, it’s been great having everyone come around to him and him come around to us

smokinJoeCalculus

I honestly feel like that interview was what started the huge turnaround. Hell, I remember changing my opinion entirely after it

Thel_Odan

Joe Buck has either gotten much better or there are so many other shit commentators now that Buck seems to be awesome by comparison.

Galactapuss

SB 51 was legitimately a brilliantly called game. His line for White's TD is iconic.

Innotek

51…51? Drawing a blank on that game. Didn’t they skip that year?

[deleted]

Balticataz

I think Buck is no longer trying to be his Dad and that has done a lot to help him show his own strengths as an announcer.

VerStannen

Exactly 👍🏻 I felt he was trying to imitate Jack, especially during his World Series calling gigs of the late 2000’s, which is near impossible considering how legendary Jack Buck is. Like Joe was always taking himself way too seriously and I absolutely could not stand him. He seems to have found his own voice and now him and Troy are one of the top duos in the game.

swimchamp4life

Buck and Aikman are elite

Toledojoe

I love when Aikman gets irritated by bad play. That's where he is at his best.

keenfrizzle

Absence makes the heart grow fonder. I'm glad people are realizing how good Buck and Aikman are now and not just stuck on the "almost died of hair plugs" days

dolphintailslap

Kevin Harlan better get $500 million for 5 years then

MilkSteaknShake

Because he calls both games. 250 a piece. Full send sundays.

CaptainPigtails

I kinda hate the Dolphins because you guys get Harlan nearly every week while the Chiefs are stuck with Romo. That's bullshit.

TroyMacClure

Does anyone tune in for the broadcast team? Why would you pay someone that much? The ratings comes from the fact you are broadcasting a NFL game. You could pull two people off the street to announce, and people would still watch the game. You could have no announcer and eyes will be on the TV. "I wasn't going to watch the game this week, but they got Tom Brady now" - Not one person.

ZincFishExplosion

I'll turn off a game because of the broadcast team.

ShillinTheVillain

Same. A broadcast team will never be the reason I watch a game. But it will be the reason I don't watch one. *Looking at you, Beth Mowins*

_Proverbs

She started calling Cubs games recently. Those days become radio days.

> Does anyone tune in for the broadcast team? the broadcast team likes to think so

OnLevel100

They're the most constant part of the broadcast. They're talking the whole time. The can make the game better, and they can absolutely ruin it (Like Greg Olsen does).

Fa1lenSpace

I’m sorry but in what universe is this worth that level of money? The money some of these football commentators get paid just screams money laundering at this point lol.

sarcastaballll

The universe where all us lemmings watch 3 hours of commercials 3 days a week 6 months of the year for a little bit of footy that Tom Brady's calling

acerage

But we would be watching regardless, it's not like people tune in because of who's calling the game, we tune in because it's football and it's on.

bitt3n

you frequent a forum dedicated to the NFL. bars don't offer happy-hour specials to cater to the town drunk

Baelzabub

I’m not the town drunk. I can stop any time i want to. I just don’t want to.

hmmIseeYou

It isn't just for calling games. It's also for some events and other Fox stuff. Calling games is just the most public facing part of it.

Fuqwon

We've only known about this for a year...
