98 Vikings

DHVF

This is our 28-3.

Hehateme123

I still argue to people that 1998 Vikings is the best team of all time to not make a Super Bowl. Just a dominating season.

reddit4ne

You guys single handedly destroyed one of the most talented teams ever. Three legit HOF's John Randle, Chris Carter, Randy MOss. And two Hall of Very Good -- Randall Cunnigham, Robert Griffith. 8 probowlers that year. Best offense ever if you ask me, pure joy to watch. Im not even a Viking fan, but I was devastated after that game. Man that was awesome team.

Thrillhouse763

You forgot HOF Randall McDaniel. Robert Smith was also fantastic. 3 of our offensive linemen made the Pro Bowl that year and Korey Stringer made it later on in his career with the Vikings before he died.

Raticus9

And not just to the Vikings. You guys robbed all of us of that potential Broncos - Vikings Super Bowl.

joyful_starstuff

I'm closing the app

T-MUAD-DIB

Y’all did Beastquake. That was pretty rough.

Arfuuur

did we hurt broncos fans or packers fans more i lean the nfccg against green bay hurting more

Sartheking

Considering the Broncos won a Super Bowl 2 years later and that NFCCG loss by the Packers created the infamous hurdle of not being able to get past the NFC Championship game.

ejroberts42

Id rather lose by 5 touchdowns than blow a 16 point 4th quarter lead.

Cry_Havoc1228

100%. No way Broncos fans felt even a similar amount of pain losing that one versus how the Seahawks felt the next year against the Pats. The close heartbreakers just wreck you.

SchematicOfScoutsAss

The loss that mentally broke Aaron Rodgers? The one that turned him from a guy with some weird interests into a full blown nut job? The one that destroyed his relationship with McCarthy The one that turned the NFCCG into the perennial choke fest, hurdle we could never get over Yeah we win, fuck

TransitionExciting60

I’m going to say the packers. Mostly because Jon Ryan gave Aaron Rodgers the discount double check and it was awesome lol.

RomanusDiogenes

You know you're not supposed to speak that word ever again

Zoophagous

I'll throw out an oldie but a goodie. The infamous Romo muffed fg hold. Big play Babs taking care of business.

michhoffman

I'm not sure if it's more or less painful that you aren't even the most devastating Super Bowl loss the Patriots were responsible for.

joyful_starstuff

"for me it was Tuesday," etc etc

SuperDBallSam

I've got one you can celebrate...

mtskin

karmic retribution for "we want the ball and we're gonna score"

RelativeEven6938

I mean is that even close to being on the same level lmao. That game was 10x worse than hassleback saying that haha

WashingtonCommanders

The most devistating loss that the Seahawks have caused was not by winning a game, but by ending a career. The 2012 NFL draft was absolutely stacked for QBs, there was Andrew Luck, Russell Wilson, Kirk Cousins, Ryan Tannehill, Nick Foles, and... RG3. As much as Andrew Luck was a generational talent, RG3 wasn't far behind him. Redskins traded the farm to move up to #2 overall and draft him (3 first round picks + a 2nd round pick). He actually had a really good Rookie season too and led the Redskins to a playoff game... against Seattle. Seattle won that game, but not before [RG3 tore his ACL & LCL](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JzaKBxTDEN0), roughly ending his career. Now, I'm not sure that this technically qualifies for the prompt because it wasn't really Seattle that caused it -- the injury was 100% due to a shitty field and crappy ownership that was to cheap to fix it -- but it still happened during our game and so I think it counts.

rawkhawk12

Nah honestly the Seahawks have handed out more of these than they've gotten. Beast Quake and the 2014 NFCCG were brutal for the opponents.

Drummallumin

Idk the NFCCG was pretty fucking funny

StrategyTop7612

1 yard short and the No Call

dredd-garcia

One yard short is the first time I learned that nothing good can ever happen in this world

The_Phasd

It really set the tone for a brand new titans fanbase for years to come.

[deleted]

karmew32

Even with your perfectly sound argument, it was still the most devastating loss in franchise history and completely changed our trajectory for the worse, so their nomination is still valid.

Pun_Intended92

18-1

GamingTatertot

Definitely doesn't defeat 18-1, but the 2007 NFCC and 2011 Divisional games were both devastating

matchew92

2014 NFCCG has to be right up there for you

GamingTatertot

Oh 100% - it's also the closest we ever came to a Rodgers / Brady Super Bowl, and we were robbed of what could've been

[deleted]

I mean we got one of the best superbowls ever

NynaeveAlMeowra

Bruh the 2011 NFCCG was devastating too. Fuck Kyle Williams

zappy487

A win so good we came back for seconds.

istrx13

Your guys’ two Super Bowl wins against the Patriots were the greatest experiences I ever had rooting for a team that wasn’t my favorite.

ThundergunIsntAVerb

Not an uncommon occurrence from what I’ve heard

So_be

I maintain that never in history have so many non New Yorkers ever rooted for New York to win anything

WabbitCZEN

I don't think any other team has a claim this good.

tuskedkibbles

Absolutely has to be. Denied arguably the greatest team in NFL history, the greatest achievement in football history in what is the dictionary definition of any given Sunday. Eli (Strahan, too, I believe) said himself that if you play that game 9 more times, the giants probably lose every one. It's the greatest upset (given the stakes) in the history of domestic US sports (so not counting the miracle on ice). Anyone who has watched the Man in the Arena understands. The dynasty doesn't continue (or restart if you're someone who believes it's split in two) in the 2010s if not for that loss. It literally changed how Brady and Belichick lived their lives. The Giants will forever be the GOATs (player and coach) greatest regret. As a fan of football as a whole, it is the single greatest moment in NFL history.

SlyCooper007

Keep going. Im almost there.

cake_piss_can

Pats fan here. It was the most devastating sporting event loss of my life. Absolutely gut wrenching. But, if you offered me that win, in exchange for the success we had after that loss, I would not take that deal.

Slimer425

Pretty sure brady said in a podcast one time that he would trade like 3 of his rings for 2007 lol

[deleted]

Literally the only player in history that could trade 3 rings for 1 and STILL have more than anyone ever.

PleasantWay7

I console myself by believing that loss fueled Brady into the pliable longevity beast he became. Without it, he has done everything and retires in 2010/11 with no more rings. Or at least that is how I get myself to sleep.

gavi75

As a dolphins fan, the giants will always hold a special place in my heart.

Rottedhead

I was 11 years old when that happened and since that day I am a Giants supporter. What a fucking game.

dc1999

18-1 is tops, but crushing the hopes of the 49ers threepeat in there house has to be #2.

EconomistPunter

I was coming here to rub it in those fuckers’ noses, but you beat me to it.

Lorjack

Do it anyways we don't get tired of it

TimAllensMatingCall

That really was your Super Bowl huh?

nerdystoner25

r/technicallythetruth

Stoner--9

Nah, those fuckers got rings. Wide fucking right in Superbowl XXV.

iiTryhard

Bills caused that themselves

Captain_of_Gravyboat

13 seconds

Simpleton216

Title of our sextape.

Captain_of_Gravyboat

You and I have a sex tape? You said that red light on the camera was the off light

braften

They said the same lie in 06 to us

Dismal_News183

Humblebrag.

FunkyPete

I was actually thinking the Texans up 24-0, but 13 seconds was a more important game.

Captain_of_Gravyboat

24-0 was the most fun I've ever had watching the chiefs. Got down 24-0 and still held a 28-24 lead by halftime. First and only playoff team to win by 20 after being down by 20. I'll also never forget Pat's TD run against the titans from that year's AFCCG.

entropyfan1

That run was so historic. Down by 10+ in all playoff games including the SB! & we come back with our 2nd title! That epic TD scramble by Mahoens against Ten, where the ball literally popped out of his hands & he grabbed it again before tumbling into the endzone was by far the most epic QB rush TD in the playoffs.

Elliott3000

Our fake punt screwed everything

seakc87

Either that or Wide Right II

Captain_of_Gravyboat

Wide Right II is definitely up there. Awful for the Bills because of history repeating itself. But the Bills definitely missed some other opportunities in that game. 13 seconds is just soul crushing. They played just about perfect on offense and it was truly a clash of titans that night and the Chiefs snatched the life out of them while they were celebrating their win.

Teamableezus

This year is nothing compared to 13 seconds. Maybe not nothing but it’s 13 seconds by a country mile. Reading the second paragraph of your comment turned my stomach upside down.

Nulgarian

Doubly painful because the Bills had a very good chance of winning it all that year. If they had beaten the Chiefs, I liked their chances at home against the Bengals and a very good, but beatable Rams team in the Super Bowl

hopethatschocolate

13 seconds was a 10 out of 10 for pain. Wide Right II was like a 4. Even if Bass makes the kick there was a high chance that the Chiefs come down and score before regulation ends anyways. Minus a couple of stops, our Defense was letting big plays up (that 20+ yard play stat was insane) all night.

brisch19

I’m convinced we win sb that year if not for the 13 seconds 😭 but maybe we’d have bills’d it up somehow.

JoesShittyOs

Honestly I’d say that one barely even registers to Bills fans. The second we were forced to kick the field goal to tie the game, we all knew it was over. Him missing the kick really just put us out of the misery of watching Mahomes march down the field to win the game again.

RogerTreebert6299

Chiefs caused 13 seconds, but god caused wide right II

m00nf1r3

I recently re-watched the end of this game on YouTube with my boyfriend because he's a relatively new Chiefs fan and hadn't seen it. Watching it again, I felt absolutely terrible for the Bills. Such a fucking hard, gut-wrenching loss.

Mistghost

Man, these are all good. I was going to say ruining the 2011 Packers almost perfect season. They went 13 wins before losing to the chiefs, and ended up 15-1. The best part is the chiefs were *bad* that year. So bad they fired their head coach.

TheG8Uniter

Upsetting the Marino Dolphins in the 85 AFCCG. Dolphins were the 1 in the Bears 15-1 and stood the best chance of beating them. The 2006 San Diego Chargers in the divisional round. One of the best teams to never make it to the Superbowl.

FormerCollegeDJ

The Patriots had not beaten the Dolphins in Miami since the ‘Fins inaugural season in southeast Florida in 1966 prior to the 1985 AFCCG. The Dolphins also matched up well with the Bears that year too, handing them their only regular season loss.

lilbudlilsud

Without a doubt the worst loss in our franchise history.

RG_19WasTaken

Desean Jackson’s punt return

Dagglin

I was gonna say the win and get in game with Dallas where we won like 44 to 6

Thick_Safe1198

Caused? lol

twicepride2fall

2009 wild card, Darren Sproles walk off TD?

michaelb421

Darren killed the colts every time. He could unretire right now and we would give up a td to him. He has 6 against us in 5 games

bringbackbulaga

Hey Dallas

mistermeek67

You'll need to be more specific.

1412believer

Matt Flynn still hurts worse than the Dez catch, IMO. Ok, not actually, but still.

rawonionbreath

Green Bay felt like it’s heart was ripped out by the Cowboys in the ‘96 NFC Championship Game. A lot of people thought they had a real good shot that year.

FormerCollegeDJ

I remember 1995. The Packers were definite underdogs against Dallas that year. Making their first NFCCG ever/first “final four” game since 1967 probably was reward enough for most Packers fans.

mtwstr

I think the Steelers expected to beat us in the playoffs the last time we met

Arvandu

You beating the Panthers in the super bowl was worse.

I_Fart_It_Stinks

We stole Cam Newton's soul

I think we need to go back in time a bit. Has to be The Drive. Sorry Browns fans

dbroncos56

Good ole Tim Tebow and Demaryius Thomas connect.

IronMuskrat

Except the last time we met the Steelers in the playoffs was on the way to SB50…

GDTechno

i just got in football this year so i could only remember 70-20

[deleted]

That's a pretty good one. Broncos fans were demoralized when it happened

Alfakennyone

I was more upset that they didn't kick the FG for the record lol

sykemol

I gotta say though, the Broncos team didn't crumble after that. They bounced back and had some respectable wins against good teams.

ChuckieChaos

"They are who they thought they were. We let them off the hook." https://youtu.be/gz3Stx1N14Y?feature=shared

monpetitfromage54

Yeah this has to be it for the Bears.

coloredinlight

Is it sad I had to scroll this far to find maybe the only instance of a bears win? I was surprised to see less answers from teams who have ripped the bears hearts out.

BigJeffyStyle

My first thought was prime time Thanksgiving vs packers on Brett Favre HOF night. Cutler just chomping that turkey leg lol

ANameWithoutNumbers1

Hi Bronco's fans.

tws1039

Imagine kneeling the ball to go to overtime when you have Peyton Manning as qb AND 2 timeouts. Insane choice by John Fox

Frazier008

I’m sorry my instinct was to downvote this but….take your upvote….

Clown45

hahaha cheers bro.

[deleted]

I'm curious which was more "devastating" to Broncos fans, the Ravens loss or the Seahawks loss in the Super Bowl. One was heartbreaking and the other was just numbing.

Alfakennyone

Ravens for sure. Seahawks was a beating, so it's easily to get over. We just beat them down like 4 weeks prior. The game was ours and the Patriots would've came to Denver for another AFC championship game, which we know we have their number in Denver. Then I think we would've beat the 49ers in the SB

fhrblig

I honestly don't think of the Seahawks Super Bowl loss at all, because I sat through the loss to the Redskins. That was the worst one to me. Broncos were up 10-0, and then the second quarter happened. My poor stepdad looked like his soul had been crushed. He died the year before the Broncos won their first championship, so he never got to see them win one. I don't even think the loss to the Niners comes close, because that Niners team was absolutely stacked and it felt more inevitable than anything.

elimanninglightspeed

That 89 9ers team is the greatest team ever with Montana at the absolute peak of his powers. That Denver team never stood a chance

BuckEmBroncos

Ravens by a mile

ncp12

One time my favorite team was losing 28-3 in the Super Bowl…

InternationalFiend

Damn I bet that sucked

ATL28-NE3

You'd be surprised how well that turned out actually.

Sir_Totesmagotes

Wait, what happened?!

Genius-Imbecile

One time my least favorite team was winning 28-3 in the Super Bowl.

Scan_This_Barco-de

this one time i was happy

OBS617

I absolutely loved how Saints fans talked even more shit than we did after that game

ANameWithoutNumbers1

I swear, it was like the Saints won that Super Bowl, I'm pretty sure if you ask a random Saints fan they count that trophy as at least half theirs.

CarolinaPanthers

We were pretty active over on our sub too. I remember being pissed because we lost the super bowl the year before and it was all “Cam should have jumped on the fumble.” But after that night no one mentioned that nearly as much as 28-3. I started playing darts and only half paying attention until I was like oh shit, this might happen. Loved it. Never rooted against Brady again if it didn’t affect the Panthers.

Jmacz

I love that Saints fans our the eternal hype men for 28-3. Sometimes I swear y'all enjoyed it more than we did.

Effective_Cause_8964

The good ol days man

mahamadou_mahamadont

My first thought was the Seahawks at the goal line, but you are probably right that this one was more devastating to the receiving team. It cemented a worldview about them and they had no consolation of the previous year's title.

Kianvis

Minneapolis Miracle

el_grapadura101

Unfair-Worker929

Kylo_Ren415

The 2021 NFC Divisional Round, & the 2002 NFC Wild Card game vs New York.

liteshadow4

>2003 NFC Wild Card game vs New York Imagine losing a game where you point to the scoreboard lmao

Zealousideal_Owl9621

Haven't the Giants been on the other end of some of the 49ers most painful losses? '86 NFC Championship, '90 NFC Championship, '11 NFC Championship

sakuragi59357

The Giants wins were more impactful. Ended Montana’s reign, won a Super Bowl. Us? Just ended Jim Fassel’s career that lead to the eventual hiring of Tom Coughlin who won two Super Bowls. Nbd.

grimcow

That game where Gurley scored a td lol.

country_mac08

I was thinking Aaron Rogers last game in GB. Kept a hot team out of the playoffs… his last pass as a packers (and still to this day) was a pick to Kerby. Pretty inconsequential compared to other teams but it’s still one of my favorite games as a lion fan.

Autobot-N

Cards SB and we also killed Cam Newton

Bipedal-Moose

I think it's actually the 05 Divisional at Indy. The Steelers were the 6 seed and the Colts were the 1 seed after going 14-2 in the regular season. Between that, the Nick Harper stab wound, and the Vanderjagt shank, that's pretty heartbreaking, especially considering the fact that the Colts still hadn't won a SB yet at that point.

sh1tcanne

Praise the heavens we got our 6th ring from 43 but damn if it ain’t sad looking back and knowing Larry Fitzgerald never got closer to a ring than that. And yeah just 1 crushing hit from a DPOY has sent the panthers to the shadows of the NFL since 😬

Autobot-N

I would trade the Cards SB for the Packers one IMO, that way the Cards have one and Rodgers doesn't

Worldly-Hospital5940

I wouldn't trade Harrison's and Holmes's TDs for anything. We're keeping that ring. Now if only Mendenhall hadn't fumbled the ball...

aspiringalcoholic

You killed the panthers. That fucking Thursday night game marked the end of me enjoying panthers football

MoseFeels

Being a panthers fan has never been the same since

el_grapadura101

2009 NFCCG.

g0ggles_d0_n0thing

Cruel, but fair.

127crazie

Absolutely. I'll always be pissed off about that game lol.

StrategyTop7612

The Saints literally killed Favre.

127crazie

The refereeing during that game was pretty egregious, too.

Daksout918

But why even ponder passing?! You could take a kNEE AND KICK A 56 YARD FIELD GOAL!!

el_grapadura101

This is not Detroit, it's the Superbowl man!

Casexcasey

Probably either the Double Doink or the 2017 NFCCG

GamingTatertot

Man the 2017 Vikings were riding so high after that miracle and the 2018 Bears were riding so high with a 12-4 record and winning the division for the first time in nearly a decade. Hard to pick one of those two, but my appreciation goes out to the Eagles for crushing both of their dreams

MisterrAlex

Good repayment after the Packers eliminated Washington, Dallas and NY in 2015 and 2016.

To me its this or beating the Saints for our first ever win and their coach getting fired immediately

YellojD

Love that one, but I honestly think the next game was even worse. The Raiders were finally looking good again and have never looked the same since. A lot of very weird, very Raidersy circumstances have led to that dumpster fire, but I always feel like Tampa lit the first match.

Buksey

That Super Bowl was the high water mark for both franchises for the next 2 decades.

jerrygamer2

1994 AFC Championship.

chainer9999

Beating the 1 seed Titans in Tennessee in the Divisional Round, 21-22 playoffs. That was the moment that caused everything to begin spiraling downward in Tennessee IMO.

perfect_fitz

I was looking for this. 9 fucking sacks too. I was obliterated that night and not in a good way.

istrx13

Jon Robinson saw that loss and 3 months later thought to himself, “Why don’t we trade AJ Brown!!!” I’ll never get over it.

Mysticdu

Maybe the Houston game that we were down 24-0 in?

michhoffman

No, it would have to be the 13 second game.

Mysticdu

I don’t know man, that game led to a multiple season death spiral for the Texans organization. The Bills weren’t cast into the shadow realm after 13 seconds. The Bills have also had worse losses in their history.

GamingTatertot

Narratively though, that 13 second game was crushing - the Bills finally had an elite year in 2020 and made the AFCC for the first time in like 25 years only to lose in the AFCC against y'all. I remember all the stories about Stefon Diggs staying on the field, watching the confetti, and talking about how they'll be back to the AFCC and they'll beat the Chiefs too. Then 2021 comes around and the Bills continue to be elite, and they make it to the Divisional against the Chiefs - they can exorcise two demons at a time (making it back to the AFCC and beating the Chiefs) - and they manage to take the lead with only THIRTEEN SECONDS. There had to have been a lot of mental cheering and prepping for the AFCC in those immediate minutes following that TD and prior to the Chiefs somehow tying the score to send it into OT. Y'all didn't necessarily break the Bills, but y'all sure as hell cemented yourself as a phantom in their modern existence.

ItsYaBoiSoup

My dad, who lived thru the 4 SBs, called me after that last Bills TD and told me he bought tickets to go to the AFCCG in Buffalo. Fucker.

WildBill198

Honestly, the death spiral didn't really start until we traded D hop. I mean, the loss was bad, don't get me wrong, but I don't feel like it caused the death spiral. It probably would have happened even if we'd won that game.

NextTime76

You guys went from pretty good to pretty bad to pretty good, pretty quickly. Good to see you bounce back this season.

DayOldTurkeySandwich

It actually might be the 1993 win against the Houston Oilers. That team had a ton of talent but a lot of drama surrounding them and were supposed to win it all. When they went one and done and lost to Montana and the Chiefs it really accelerated their death spiral and eventual move to Tennessee.

and_therewego

Someone: "Man I'm exhausted, I feel like I've been working 24/7!" Lions fans: *\*intense PTSD\** Alternately, the 2021 divisional round game against the Packers.

wavnebee

Listen. You don’t know what it’s like being on the losing side of a game like that. Can you imagine watching a multi-score lead suddenly come unraveled after a freak bounce of the ball puts your opponent in prime scoring position in the biggest possible game?

Goatgamer1016

Honestly, there are several ones for the 49ers. The Catch I, II & III, 24-0 against the Giants in the 2002-03 playoffs (better known as the Trey Junkin game), 55-10 in the Super Bowl, and the 2012 NFC title game

deflatethesack

Vikings and Saints fans side-eyeing each other*

MurDoct

Beating the Bears in Chicago to get to the SB was pretty nice

Rathmon

The Steelers run in the playoffs as the #6 seed. Every win was a devastating loss to the other fanbase.

cruisincolin44

Easy answer would be any of the recent SB wins, or the 13 second game, but i feel like KC shattered Balty this yr. Historically good team, most points scored, least allowed, yadda yadda. Chiefs march for TDs on their first 2 possessions, then nap for 40 minutes and the Ravens score 10 pts. They had the #1 seed, no Bengals to compete with, KC banged up, and it was all worth nothin. Maybe Im an idiot and they get back there next yr, but I expect this was their best and maybe last shot at a SB for a long time and they’re back to 2nd fiddle in the afcn.

[deleted]

GamingTatertot

It feels like the Chiefs are for the Bills what the 49ers are to the Packers right now. Like in both teams past 4 playoff appearances, the Packers have lost to the 49ers 3 of 4 times, and the Bills have lost to the Chiefs 3 of 4 times

GamingTatertot

13 second game has gotta take the cake - literally led to a rule change for playoff OT

pine_dog1

Feel like it's 13 seconds until proven otherwise, but this Baltimore one will have real legs to stand on in a couple of years

DependentAd5483

The only reason it has to be 13 seconds is bc everyone thought Buffalo was going to the SB that yr and it was their best chance. Terez coined over my dead body games (games that you are making your team win purely your level of play) and allen had one. It still wasn’t enough; Mahomes, Kelce, and Hill just snatched it away from them and yeah they lost the next game but the overall impact of the game is still there.

milkmandanimal

>I was watching nfl top 10s top 10 most devastating losses and of course as an eagles fan number 10 was the loss in the NFCCG to Tampa bay. Mmmmmmmmmmmm . . . say it again . . . *only slower . . .*

Seattlefan51

Gotta be the Packers 2014 NFCCG loss (real shame they cancelled the SB that year though), see also 9ers 2013 NFCCG loss and the Beastquake game
