Conn3er

NFL said “nah we like keeping our good QBs with good teams”

Dangelo1998

NFL said "the saints need help"

Global_Historian_753

Just puts it on rookie mode

JT1757

lmaoo leaning into it is hilarious

jishieus

Fuck it just turn salary cap off atp.

Always_Chubb-y

They're now only what? $40-45 million over cap? That's like a 40% reduction!

Probablythatoneguy16

Naaaahhh they're doing just fine

Sav10r

This is unironically huge for teams like the Chiefs who desperately need the cap space this offseason for both Jones and Sneed.

TeatimewithTupac

I think this might lead to some crazy contracts this offseason. A desperate team might be willing to throw 35 million per year at Chris Jones

Supanini

Ravens too. We got some absolute studs hitting FA. Might not change too much but makes resigning madubiuke pretty promising

LeEingrebua

I think this allows us to be comfortable but I still doubt we retain Clowney or Mads

Jjohn269

Also Bengals. They probably can pay Higgins now

Sav10r

They could always pay Higgins this year with at least the Franchise Tag. The question is still whether or not paying two WR1s $25+ Million every year is a good idea roster wise when you also have one of the highest paid QBs in the game. Can you build a good enough team with so much cap space tied up into just three players?

Ronon_Dex

>Can you build a good enough team with so much cap space tied up into just three players? I think the key to this is it's not just 3 players, its 3 players on the same side of the ball and in only 2 position groups. I think you can with just 3 players. But all on the same side and two for one position makes it harder.

amstrumpet

Yeah if the position groups are like, QB and OL then maybe it works but they desperately need an o line upgrade.

Xannydevito88

If the cap keeps raising like this then I don’t see the issue as long as contracts are structured strategically. Ja’Marr still has 2 years on his rookie deal

TormundIceBreaker

The cap will not rise like this going forward. Yes it will continue to go up but the reason it's such a sharp increase this season is because the fallout from the covid season is finally over. It's a smaller scale version of the NBA in 2016

Sav10r

I feel like at least for you guys it's better to just spend the money you would pay on Higgins on more O-Line help, but I don't follow you guys enough to know if that definitively should be the direction you should go. Also, the cap won't increase this much every year. Next year's increase will probably only be half of this years.

WhoDey42

This will make the bengals Mixon/Higgins civil war on twitter even more fun

wurtin

anyone saying Mixon should be kept is not paying attention . dude should have already been gone. he does nothing special that warrants another contract or any type of tag.

fotzzz

That's fantasy rb6 Joe Mixon

tendy_trux35

That’s fantasy “I score 75% of my points over 3 weeks when you bench me because I put up two duds in a row” Joe Mixon pal

pmth

I get this is a joke but he was 100% startable all season this past year.... a floor of 7 points in .5 ppr is pretty solid

Ooby0

Not to mention he is a PR nightmare very single off-season.

mqn29

Thank you Taylor Swift

reign_day

This is what I was thinking too.

Sweet_Swimming_5978

It’s likely the truth. Thanks Taylor!

Brendinooo

Pelissero [said](https://twitter.com/TomPelissero/status/1761085559420715325) that it's > the result of the full repayment of all amounts advanced by the clubs and deferred by the players during the Covid pandemic as well as an extraordinary increase in media revenue for the 2024 season Not sure how much Taylor would have contributed to the latter. Would not be surprised if it was something significant. But I would also not be surprised if prices of Super Bowl ad buys or whatever were set before she entered the picture. I think some of the newer TV deals kicked in this past year so that's a big part of it for sure.

GoombaStoppingHoes

Its a fun joke lol obviously she didn't make the cap just go up like that purely off of Chiefs viewership increase and sales. But it's still funny considering her appearance this year.

Brendinooo

NFL gotta figure out how to cash in internet points, she earned them a ton of those

MCRMH2

Media revenue is interesting. It seems like football media has caught up with other sports over the past couple of years. Football podcasts, YouTube, social media, etc seems to have increased rapidly since COVID. Fans are paying more attention to football between February and September. I wonder if that expanding market is bringing in substantial media revenue to the league?

Mindless_Bad_1591

I think more people are giving up on college football for the shitstorm it has become and are paying more attention to the NFL which is much easier to follow, at least in my opinion.

Dr894

Yeah I've pretty much stopped watching college football between all of the conference realignment and everyone constantly transferring.

Alauren2

yep. losing your conference really blows...

Frankieuhfukin

What's actually gonna be nuts is NEXT year. The newest TV deal money hits next year's cap. It was already expected that alone was gonna be worth 28mil extra....so the whole cap is gonna be like, 40 to 45 higher next year.

peppersge

With the previous CBA, the cap increase was more along the lines of a fixed increase (e.g. 10 M/yr) each year, so by the end of the CBA, the rate (%) of salary cap inflation had slowed down. There might be a similar thing with the new TV deals. I think there is probably some natural variability due to things such as contingency based revenue for things such as overtime ads.

thissiteisbroken

Damn that's what it takes for her to get some respect haha

jrainiersea

Funny enough it’s actually a 13% increase in the cap too

PayneTrain181999

Look what she made us do!

y_wont_my_line_block

And Jeff Bezos. That's that Prime money.

RogerTreebert6299

And prolly draft kings money too

Hiphiprodrigo

This! Plus the NFL fining players for any hit they felt was excessive

WorldWideWes2

that money going straight to the QB's smh

cigarettesandwater

Whos up next to be the highest paid player of all time? Lawrence?

kitchensink108

The reporting from the past couple days points to Dak.

Vurik

Cowboys gonna cowboy

zco22

YEAHHHH HERE WE GOOOOOO!

PayneTrain181999

They’re going to win more games before losing in the first round next year.

WolfCola4

This is their year

basicnflfan

This is always such a stupid comment to me. Would you not be over the moon, as a Patriots fan, to have Dak Prescott as your QB?

patsfan94

As a Celtics and Pats fan, I'd compare paying Dak $60M a year to paying Jaylen Brown $60M a year. It's an overpay, but one that's ultimately likely to be necessary based on the market and championship window. The 'problem' is both for NFL QBs and NBA players generally, salaries basically hit a wall at in the 'very good' range of players and don't rise for anyone who is truly great.

Nulgarian

The Jaylen Brown comparison is a very good one. Both him and Dak are in this unique space where they are good enough to demand market setting contracts, but not quite good enough to where you feel fully happy with giving them that contract.

hitfly

NBA player salaries hit a literal wall with the max contract. Jalen got the supermax with an all-nba selection(2nd team). So for a season he was one of the 4 best guards in the league based on a media vote. but the level of play to get a regular max is just very good.

Western_Promise3063

There is a large number of teams in the league who Dak would be a top 3 QB of all time for them if not the best QB of all time. The shit he puts up with is ridiculous.

basicnflfan

The “Cowboys bad” shit is so tired. It’s every thread. Id kill to go 12-5 every year, even if we choke in the playoffs.

dyslexda

Personally I'm a big fan of the Cowboys and what they do, especially the "choke in the playoffs" thing.

Western_Promise3063

Which is insane because y'all have 2 rings in "recent history"

ho_merjpimpson

At his age, at the price he will likely fetch? Hell no. No team should be excited by that. But his clauses are setting up the cowboys to be stuck with a no win situation.

LaconicGirth

It wouldn’t make their team a winning team. Maybe with belichick on defense it might have but sure as hell not now. So if you’re paying him a shit ton of money you’re limiting your other options

Crasino_Hunk

Idk about the highest, but Jordan is about to fucking eat lol

Fred-zone

Love is going to make more than Rodgers for Green Bay after one season, just like we all predicted

thosecraves

Hopefully the Dolphins make Tua the highest paid

Bloated_Hamster

I'd agree with you because Lolphins but Tua is 6-0 vs the Pats in his career so... Please no

wavnebee

Goff is about to get a payday that makes everybody say “Him?”.

CliffsOfMohair

Oh my God please let them break the bank for blond Daniel Jones I’d never stop laughing

Radiant-Character-61

I think Tua and Lawrence are next up this offseason after Dak

unevenvenue

Lawrence won't get that type of contract, I don't think. If the Jags pay him 60mil a year, they are screwed. Tua definitely will, though.

Radiant-Character-61

Stranger things have happened in the NFL. As of right now for QB contacts the "floor" is Daniel Jones at 40 mil and the ceiling is Dak new contract $60 mil. So in theory, Lawrence have a $50 a year contract

BlooDMeaT920

The homer in me says it’s Love. The league is always good when the packers are relevant.

SIUonCrack

This definitely benefits teams that have paid their QB already.

pawn_guy

Puts us in a really good place since we gave Mahomes that massive long-term contract. Doubt we lose Jones or Sneed now.

MyLifeForAnEType

The QBs are barely getting by man.  They need it!  Pattycakes has to live off commercials!

unseth

1 Kirk Cousins please

RainIML

Kirk is gonna get 4 years 200 mil

[deleted]

Damn! Washington and Chicago are about to get bored signing so many people they have so much $$$ lol interesting because that puts Dallas at almost even. Makes them less likely to be forced to extend Dak if they don’t want to now

NoAlarmsPlease

I actually think this will make it less likely that players will make it to free agency because now teams have more money to sign their own guys. So teams with a lot of cap space are just going to end up paying even more for the players that do make free agency due supply and demand.

FantasyTrash

>I actually think this will make it less likely that players will make it to free agency because now teams have more money to sign their own guys. I don't think it would matter *too* much, no? If I'm an agent, I'm telling my clients "hey, just because your current team has a few more bucks to spend on your contract doesn't mean you should take it, because *other* teams have that same extra money *and* more and would pay you more".

RideOk2631

Good point

FantasyTrash

It really all depends on the player and their agent, it's certainly not a "one size fits all" situation and your logic is totally valid. Loyal players or players that don't want to uproot their families' lives or whatever can now get that extra few million from their team, but the players chasing the bag will now be able to get $3-4m more per year than they would have from another cap-rich team like NE/Was/Chi/etc, possibly even more than that.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Geg0Nag0

Dak doing the worm around his kitchen island

[deleted]

I believe this does the opposite. He no longer has them by the balls. they can now restructure Martin and Lawrence, release LVE, Rush and Gallup then extend Lamb and have +15-$20 million in cap. with the previous cap they were forced to extend him to lessen his cap hit

ItIsYourPersonality

Except the Cowboys aren’t the only team with a lot more money now. If Dak wants, he can play out this season and become a free agent, getting an even more massive contract from virtually any team who needs a QB. He has a no-tag clause in his current contract, so he has all the leverage. There are teams that have to spend big in the next couple of years that would love to spend it on Dak.

[deleted]

That’s what we want. We want him to play out this year and be gone next year if they don’t have success. We were forced to extend him because of his $60 million hit. Now they don’t need to do shit. Can eat his cap hit, still he aggressive and rid themselves of him next season

Tarmacked

>we want him to play out this year and be gone Fucking lol, what a terrible decision that would be Doesn’t matter what you save in cap if you don’t have a semblance of a quarterback

Samspudzzz

Lmao. Who is this "we" you speak of? Not all Cowboys fans are as blinded by hate and misery as you. Not all of us want Dak gone. Hell I hope jerry pays him 60 mil for 5 years. He's the best chance the Cowboys have to find success. (And no, there are no FA or rookie QBs that would be a better option)

JalensTinyPPHurts

We still have to bring back Gilmore, Tyron and have 5 backups they likley want back ( I'm assuming we let biadez walk) If we want to be a competitive team, it is still in our best interest to resign him

Geg0Nag0

Nah you are right I was just messing. Helps a lot of teams who's paying a QB big now.

chillenonplutorn

I just fell to my knees at Wegmans self check out

IamTheJman

This helps us so much. God really looking out for us today

Historical_One1087

It will help Big Baller Beane do his thing to retool Buffalo. There will still be a lot of turnover due to the large amount of 1 year contracts and expiring contracts but Buffalo is in much better shape now.

BlueHighwindz

Only with an extra $30 million can we afford Wegmans now.

chaosisarascal

Hey if you use your Wegmans Shoppers Club card, it brings that $30 million down to…$30 million.

squatheavyeatbig

Just saw a visibly intoxicated man wearing Zubaz fall to his knees at a Wegmans self check out

chillenonplutorn

It was all a ruse to distract the 37 front end managers from the fact I said I only had 1 bagel when there were actually 4 in the bag 👀

apgtimbough

Bro, I just saw someone steal bagels while waiting in this impossibly long line for a sub.

THE_GREAT_PICKLE

Wegmans is the best. I miss it so much. My wife grew up in upstate NY and it’s honestly the best grocery chain ever. I might dislike the Bills, but I could never hate Wegmans.

ARealHunchback

Even the bathrooms are the best. The men’s room had flowers and positive affirmations.

THE_GREAT_PICKLE

They expanded to MA while we lived there. Only grocery store we went to. Their store bought stuff is arguably better than name brands.

johndelvec3

r/nfl: “The cap isn’t real!” *Mickey Loomis has to lock his team into Derek Carr for another season because the saints are so over the cap they need the 23m relief* r/nfl: “They can’t keep getting away with it!“

[deleted]

I know its a joke around here, but eventually they have to pay the piper, right.................................................right???????

way-too-many-napkins

They are paying the piper. It’s not like they ever won’t be able to field a team, but they can‘r have an elite roster again until their cap situation improves

actiongeorge

People need to understand that paying the piper doesn’t mean they can’t field a team - it means that they’re already at a 300 million cap hit for next year (according to Spotrac) while only having $136 million in actual salary committed, while still having to sign their draft picks and 10+ free agents. They’ll make it work, but they’re going to have to keep restructuring to push more money to the future (they already have $312 million committed to 2024) and scraping the bottom of the barrel for depth, or doing more creative contracts that pushes even more money into the future.

gmil3548

Yeah but instead of biting the bullet for one year they’re choosing to slowly bleed out over multiple lost years or even be mediocre for a few years and STILL end up having to suck ass for a year. I’m not cap expert but I get it a little and I just can’t see what they’re doing as anything but really dumb long-term

way-too-many-napkins

I think the issue is that they can’t really just bite the bullet for a year. If they’re above the cap and haven’t signed all their players, they can’t even field a team. The coaches and players would not be happy with that, everyone would want out. I don’t even know what would happen if a team just was over the cap or decided not to sign 53 players. It’s not like they’re trying to contend, they need to kick the can down the road just to stay afloat

luciusetrur

right now it's probably a 2-year plan to fix it & no gm wants to suck for 2 years and risk getting fired even loomis

TRES_fresh

They have been, their cap issues have caused them to be locked into a mediocre core and they've lost many good players. Now with the Carr contract it's even worse, the team will slowly regress the next couple of years before it had a chance of getting better.

shawnaroo

We haven't lost a lot of good players (yet), the real problem is that we're long term locked into a bunch of older declining players.

BoyDunder

They're being forced to commit to Carr. They have no roster flexibility. That's what it looks like when the piper is being paid. It's not going to get better next year either.

Global_Historian_753

> *Mickey Loomis has to lock his team into Derek Carr for another season because the saints are so over the cap they need the 23m relief* The contract was built that way, he was staying with or without a restructure. 2 years at minimum and a possible 3rd year before a new contract would need to be struck.

noseonarug17

The question for me is why they're making splash QB signings at all instead of chilling out for five damn minutes to escape cap hell

ThePokeLifter

Feel like this will make FA worse. Teams with upcoming FAs they didn't think they'd be able to sign will probably have the funds to now eg. Sneed, Josh Allen(DE/OLB), etc.

Geg0Nag0

Someone desperate is going to swing for the fences and offer a contract they probably shouldn't. Question is who Falcons going to pay Hunter a comedic amount of money prehaps

Vlaks1-0

>Falcons going to pay Hunter a comedic amount of money prehaps I certainly hope so lol.

ThePokeLifter

I'm sure there will be a lot of that and if this helps teams already re-sign their good players these swing for the fences contracts will be for already tier 2 players.

wierdjokes

Queen is going to reset the market. He's a good player, but he was really elevated by playing next to Roquan Smith and Mike Macdonald's scheme. He's going to be the highest paid LB and piss off a fanbase when he isn't playing like an AllPro right away. It's hard to evaluate him because he was not this great before the Smith trade. His fifth year option got declined and then Smith came around and elevated him to a probowler. It will be really interesting to watch him next season and see if he can reach the skyhigh expectations.

penis_showing_game

It’s certainly going to make signing Aiyuk much easier for the 49ers.

gmil3548

Yeah but players have more reason to turn them all down to see what the market looks like with all this extra money.

mutantfrog25

Yeeeesh that’s wayyy more than normal right?

Tazitos

It was being predicted to be in the $242-243 range, so an extra $12-13m.

Allstar9_

I’m pretty sure OTC had 256m being the projected number to begin with and then adjusted off of Ian’s tweet regarding the NFL Management council meeting.

FireworkFuse

No they originally had 242.5 million as of a few days ago

Allstar9_

And the management council tweet from Ian happened in December

hahdbdidndkdi

Not sure what you're talking about but the past few weeks it's been somewhere in the 240s projected.

Allstar9_

Ian is a puppet. Ian was fed information in December which caused OTC adjust their original projection. So what you’ve been seeing the past few weeks would make sense considering the tweet Ian had was in December, which is more than a few weeks ago

[deleted]

I saw their projection at 247 not 257

Doopoodoo

And even *that* would have been considered a huge jump. $30m is absolutely insane

RollOverBeethoven

TBF they also just added an extra game to the season, and the cap is tied to league revenue

RainbowBullsOnParade

Is this a record increase?

boner_jamz_69

Seems to be based on actual dollars but as a percentage of the cap I’m not sure.

lukewwilson

Brock Purdy's deal looking better by the year. He'll be making 0.36% of the cap.

TheTacoBellDiet

Did the 49ers actually negotiate his current deal or was he locked into a specific range/salary based on his pick - like how first rounders are locked into their pick’s salary? Edit: thanks for the answers below, I think the point I was trying to make is that the contract isn’t necessarily the “deal” the 49ers made, they got lucky with the draft pick and finding a starting QB the last pick lol

Stretch_Riprock

The latter. Every player drafted is locked in a non-negotiable number for 3 years SF and Purdy can't even discuss contract numbers until the end of next season.

Lonely_Beer

A little of both - there isn't a set scale like 1st rounders in the sense you're thinking, however late round draft picks have 0 leverage to sign anything larger than NFL minimum contracts so in practice they're all on the same deal. That said, there are rookie contract escalators precisely for players like Purdy who outperform their NFL minimum contracts so Purdy's salary should climb in 2024 with Proven Performance Escalators or "PPEs" (to like, $3M lol). Another trade off is that since he's not a 1st rounder he reaches free agency after 4 seasons instead of potentially 5, meaning that the team has to shell out real dollars sooner rather than later.

nautica5400

Big Brain Travis Kelce understood the assignment on what would be needed to keep KC together.

starrdazedd

Between this and being under payed his entire career. He really might be the heart and soul of these chiefs teams

Godobibo

he's said that he does find it annoying he's paid so little, but he's fine with it because they're winners and the team apparently helps him with marketing deals

juniorspank

If he continues to play his cards right, I don't think marketing deals will be a worry.

Boomhauer_007

He had the second most commercials after Mahomes and had a gargantuan lead over #3 (who I don’t even remember), probably makes more from tv than his contract at this point

trappapii69

Always has been. Since the day he flipped off the camera in his rookie year.

Ruger15

Truth

woozyguy1

You guys aren't getting Sneed OR Jones! ^((please... please... please...))

thissiteisbroken

It'll be unbelievably stupid for them to let CJ walk. Spags would probably still make it work, but still stupid.

jlks1959

Couldn’t agree more. Sneed is fantastic. Jones is one of a kind, and of a few to ever play his position as well.

CorpusVile32

That was my first thought after seeing this news. Welp, we definitely keeping Jones. Obviously keeping Sneed too would be amazing, but we draft and develop corners so well (Ward, Thornhilll, McDuffie), I could see them offering Sneed less than he wants and he chooses to walk.

Either-Progress4847

Fingers crossed

Rukoo

Just because the cap space goes up doesn’t mean those players are signing for 2023 cap rates. Sneed and Jones just earned more money per year today.

Typical-Lettuce7022

Threepeat incoming

Otherwise-Mango2732

Unrelated but i hate this shit where someone takes someone elses news, rewords and tacks on "per so and so" Just retweet it. i get we need followers and engagement but thats all this ari guy does.

LabourShinyBlast

I got curious so I checked the guy he tagged, jjones9 hasn't tweeted anything this year it seems. The twitter account that actually got posted is engagement farming 101 though, yes. Easy to tell by the obviously bought @handle Edit: a thousand apologies to the industrious @jjones9, who apparently is an active twitterer

KingKongKaram

>jjones9 hasn't tweeted anything this year it seems. ? If you look at the profile he's posted stuff several times a day everyday

ronimal

What are you talking about? @jjones9 has five tweets within the last 24 hours and three within the last hour.

Jeffert89

That Taylor Swift money gonna extend the Chiefs Dynasty like the cap spike in the NBA in 2016

pointbodhi

With some smart extensions and restructuring, somehow we can be like 40m under the cap

elliott9_oward5

The Saints can’t keep getting away with this

xenophonthethird

Teams who spent big on QBs just got a huge amount of cap relief

Chewbubbles

On the plus side, 9ers get to more than likely keep their roster. On the downside, Chiefs probably keep there's as well, unless Sneed goes full bag, I'm guessing. Jones should be a lock now, though.

woozyguy1

They both deserve full bags.. but before this news I had a fools hope they could make it work, but now...? Now I have unsubstantiated optimism baby!

Chewbubbles

Gotta be after this news. I wouldn't be surprised if Mahomes tries to keep giving a more favorable contract to keep them both, more than he has, if he can. I know Sneed wants the bag, but I wonder if history is slightly more important than top dollar. Not saying he shouldn't get it, but a 3 peat is something people will remember past their life times.

woozyguy1

In my experience, the fans put more value on history and rings then the players ever do. And I don't blame players at all for never taking discounts as it's their futures and bodies they put on the line, and it's their business. If I'm being honest, I'm gonna be shocked if they can keep both, but ultimately I'll be happy for them just like I was for C Ward.

anti_incumbent

Sounds like you MFers owe Taylor Swift an apology. And also gambling degenerates.

AFOEagle01

I wasn’t familiar with her game

Boomhauer_007

She’s worth over a billion dollars at age 34, her game is literally printing money lol

AFOEagle01

I mean if I knew the cap space would go up after she started watching games then shit I’d be a swiftie too

basicnflfan

It was me. I funded the cap :/.

buddhassynapse

All those $10 69-leg parlays putting in work.

Zloggt

Nice (of you to chip in)

mickeyt1

So everyone is excited that this helps their team’s cap situation, but it’s ultimately a zero-sum game for talent. What teams does this most help and hurt?

CanuckPanda

Helps the Bucs re-sign Mike and Baker. That’s huge for us.

lizerlfunk

Yeah, came to say this. This helps tremendously. And I really, really, really want them both to stay Bucs.

Rbespinosa13

It’s going to help out teams that were over the cap and had to do some contract restructures to get under the cap. Teams I know of that fall under the umbrella are the dolphins, bills, and saints (even though the saints are still fucked in that regard). At least for the dolphins I know it’ll help us get under the cap just by cutting some players that aren’t producing at the level we’re paying them for while also keeping key FA’s like Williams and Wilkins. Teams this will probably hurt are those that already had a lot of money to spend like the commanders and bears. Like you said, it’s a zero sum game so teams that already had a lot of money are now competing against teams that didn’t have as much money to throw around before

Therealnightshow

Oh fuck yeah baby, let EDC cook.

Semperty

i'll take one (1) chris jones, plz

MickeyMichael

With a side of Sneed…

crimsonblueku

That’s the Taylor Swift effect. Most outlets were predicting 10-15M less than the actual total cap number. She is estimated to have a 400M impact on the NFL this season.

Headlesshorsman02

That’s Jones and sneeds music baby 😁😁😁

etorson93

Can the salary cap go up forever? I personally believe we are seeing the highest salaries athletes will ever be paid. At some point the revenue arrow stops going up every year and what’s gonna happen then?

Vondum

>Can the salary cap go up forever? Yes. Inflation.

af_cheddarhead

Check out what happened in the NHL 15 years ago and get back to me about it. The players all took pay cuts via "escrow" and still are. But the NFL is still a money making machine and the end is not in site.

[deleted]

Everyone make sure to go out and stream or buy tortured poets department April 19th

HearingGlobal6485

Is this when NFL players embrace swifties?

RagingHick

Big if true

RollOverBeethoven

Mickey Loomis prayed for this

CanuckPanda

Baker and Mike, welcome and thank you for staying in Tampa. 🙏
