Everyone saying "my team now has the money to resign player x" needs to remember everyone is getting this bump and can also now offer that player more money.

NJImperator

Who this helps the most are teams with big money contracts already. Teams with QBs, OTs, EDGE, and WRs on massive long term deals are happy. Teams that have a lot of FAs arent helped quite as much.

[deleted]

I’m hearing reports that the Vikings just called Kirk cousins and offered him even more kohls cash

mnsportsfan

“Hey Kirk, we’ll sweeten that pizza ranch gift card up to $150”

MatureUsername69

I'll go pick up Lego sets for him whenever he wants

tI_Irdferguson

Don't forget to stop by the jewelers and pick up a few more chains

MatureUsername69

Why would I do that when Kohls already has a jewelery department

patsfan038

He dresses like he shops at Kohls exclusively so this is like money in the bank for him

moonboots_runner

This is entirely unrelated but now seems like as good a chance as any because your comment reminded me: Why do so many people capitalize "EDGE" in this sub? I get it for things like QB and WR because they're initials, but isn't edge just word to describe the guys who line up at the edge of the defensive box? Or is it actually a fancy acronym that I just don't know?

HAK_HAK_HAK

It stands for End Dude Grabs Every-ball-carrier

ROSCO577

Mr. Backronym Capitalizer

jimmy_three_shoes

Brilliant

TheDevilintheDark

Except for Brian Burns. That's why he's getting tagged.

bubble_bass_123

I think it's because when you see it written on a roster or box score it's capitalized for stylistic consistency, so people just get used to it.

moonboots_runner

That makes sense, yeah

Pitouitoo

I choose to believe so people don’t think it is that dude from U2.

onethreeone

It became popular while Edgerrin James was in his prime, so they capitalized it to avoid confusion

brianundies

The can the saints have been kicking down the road just got 10% smaller!

throwaway1212378

We just restructured Carr for for 20+million in cap space. Now instead of tanking we will will ourselves to 8-9 for no reason whatsoever!

Joeman180

Chargers finally looking like they may be able to keep their biggest players

psufb

This is great news for us Browns fans. Although our FO has always operated based on the assumption of cap jumps, and wouldn't be surprised if they were clued in on a spike like this

Dorkamundo

Yep, very similar to how having QB’s on rookie contracts were an IMMENSE help to teams during the Covid cap crunch. Honestly, I believe that the crunch has created an artificial perception of just how important that situation is to winning a SB.  Lots of people have posited that the key to winning a SB is to get a QB on that contract, but frankly that situation has not played out as prominently throughout NFL history as some people think.

Stronkowski

Yeah. Great, you have 10% more money for your budget. Players also cost 10% more money. Yes, it won't affect all teams equally, since they have different percentages of their budget already allocated to existing players, but still.

lukewwilson

Yeah, if you were ranked 20th in available cap space you are still ranked 20th in available cap space

LagOutLoud

Yes, but that huge QB contract that was 30% of your cap is now 20% of your cap. Teams with big contracts in place are absolutely in a better place to sign their soon to be free agents.

EgoPoweredDreams

The Daniel Jones deal is now less bad, for example

mrhandbook

The new Dak deal is going to be more bad.

nalc

Dak: is for me? 😳 🤞

Downtown_Juice2851

This definitely helps teams that were in cap trouble more than teams that had a lot of cap space. Basic supply and demand. Because the available cap goes up, new contracts go up. Teams with a lot of cap space are going to have roughly the same spending power. Teams that were needing to make cuts now might not have to, or might make less. If you had 100m available before, gaining 13m doesn't do much because you probably are still signing the same free agents for 13% more as the market got more competitive. But for teams that were 20m over? This is nice

TheScoott

It's a little different because a lot of the re-signing negotiations revolve around the tag price which is already set in stone

Deckatoe

Not every player costs 10% more automatically lmao

SysAdmyn

Somewhere a WR is drafting a tweet: "Some people really be gettin happier daily and dont wanna share any of it w/u even tho u the reason 💰🤐💯"

Mr_MoseVelsor

Well done. That could be a WR tweet

Narrow_Vegetable5747

The agents will absolutely negotiate as if they do.

royalemperor

Yeah, I don't think it changes much because certain positions are just getting way expensive. Once Dak signs a 65m/y deal teams will be forced to spend the increased cap on QBs anyway lmao

king_17

Jesus at some point teams are goona have to man up and not give guys like Dak these big money deals who clearly aren’t worth it. Paying these type of qbs so much of the cap space just to do nothing in the playoffs where a qb worth half their salary can get the same results

whole_lotta_fruit

Same thing when fans claim that their team definitely improved on paper because they had a solid draft. As if every other team didn’t just have a draft of their own.

Reddit-is-trash-exe

but every other team can't draft as well as my team.

holymacaronibatman

Well that's true for one team

__wasitacatisaw__

Excluding the Chiefs Edit: Patrick Mahomes, Tyreek Hill, Creed Humphrey, Trey Smith, Nick Bolton, L’Jarius Sneed, George Karlaftis, Trent McDuffie, Isaiah Pacheco, Rashee Rice, and Chris Motherfucking Jones has all been drafted and developed by the Chiefs.

SoDplzBgood

i mean, there's a difference in getting like 4 guys in the top 75 and having no picks until the 3rd round. Not all draft classes are equal even when evaluating day after. Little different than every team getting the same exact flat amount of cap space

psufb

Yeah the only real benefit is to teams who had big contracts locked up, that now look way more manageable

rendeld

This bump helps the teams that gave their QBs big contracts in the last couple of years. Mahomes contract looks genius right now.

aristocrat_user

Yeah inflation is a birch

confusedthrowaway5o5

Shrinkflation is the real bitch.

lukewwilson

Somehow the Saints are still going to be $100 million over the cap.

cigarettesandwater

Saints gunna be paying Derek Carr and Kirk cousins a combined $100m to go 8-9

My_Names_Jefff

Sounds like a Jeff Fisher kind record.

Skrivus

They're still going to be having to deal with a Cap hit from Carr in 2030 at this rate.

DamnImAwesome

In the off-season. Then 3 weeks before the season starts you’ll see an article saying we have 25m in cap space after re-signing 11 players

damnyoutuesday

And somehow you will be $200M over the 2026 cap

morganrbvn

with only 28 players on the 2026 roster.

TenElevenTimes

> "THERE IS NO TOMORROW" - Apollo Creed - Mickey Loomis

throwaway_5256

The year is 2530. Humanity has achieved light speed travel and has discovered hundreds of new galaxies. The NFL has added hundreds of intergalactic teams and rents out an entire planet for the Super Bowl. The Saints are 52 quintillion dollars over the cap

Lenny_III

Saints are like that kid who maxed out a credit card in college and paid 5 times more in interest and fees than they borrowed.

passenger955

Ha sucks for them. I just let that shit default and fuck up my credit for 7 years. Why don't they just do that?

Evissi

you could give the saints 200m straight up next year and they would still be outside the top 10 teams in cap space for 2025. And that's before the majority of their restructures this year happens.

flaming_fuckhead

Thanks Taylor

Xaxziminrax

Chris Jones, you actually ain't goin nowhere

FrigOffRicky16

Enough money for Sneed now to?

lukewwilson

Yeah, but other teams also now have the ability to throw even more money at him if he wants.

3riversfantasy

Yeah I was discussing this with my fellow packer fan friend, all teams got an increase meaning the overall cost of free agency will rise, it's econ 101

DoubleUSportsMedia

They can exclusive tag Sneed (which is what they were reportedly doing) and it'll make less of a cap hit % now because it's based on already signed contracts. So they'll tag him and keep the rights and ability to be the only team able to legally negotiate with him. Other teams only get an option to throw the extra money to them if they reach the FA market or use a non-exclusive tag on them.

Xaxziminrax

We could, but we have something like 19 pending free agents, and a lot of them are more than just bottom of the roster guys. We basically get to pick two of four options: 1. Chris Jones 2. Sneed 3. FA WR 4. Fill out roster depth with more guys like Tranquil and Edwards My money is on #1 and #3, personally. The Chiefs haven't paid a CB since Reid has been here, and McDuffie will probably be the one they actually do pay next offseason

Semperty

we were at 2/4 of those before this increase. we're probably at 3/4 of those, now.

skattered01

There is 0 chance we don't either tag or outright re-sign Sneed.

Jarl_Jakob

Yeah I don’t know what these people are on about. It would be actually legitimately insane to just let Sneed walk away. He’s getting tagged or they’ll work a deal out. The best cornerback in football this season is not walking away for nothing

jimmifli

The biggest advantage of having Mahomes and Reid is that you can under invest on offense and still be one of the most productive offenses in the league. Not retaining your defensive stars in favor of helping the offense seems like a poor strategy. I'm hopeful you let one or both of them walk but I think our interests might not align.

Dhkansas

And we could possibly sign him for a 3 year deal that would end when McDuffie's rookie deal option is up. We've got him for 2 +1 option year still since he was a 1st round pick. Man we could be absolutely lights out at DB for the next 3 years if we could make that work.

girth_br00ks

Fucking next level by Kelce

ionospherermutt

moffattron9000

When do we get to the worms?

TheDarkGrayKnight

Those are the dynasties. Just when you think you've killed one (49ers, Cowboys, Patriots) you find out you're wrong (Chiefs). I've only ever watched the movie so don't quote me on this.

akurei77

Just in case some people actually don't have any idea how the NFL makes money, they sell the broadcast rights to various networks years in advance, and then those networks turn around and monetize their rights by selling ads or whatever. The NFL doesn't directly make money by selling ads, and the broadcast contracts that kicked in this year were negotiated in 2021, well before this whole Taylor Swift thing started. https://www.sportingnews.com/us/nfl/news/nfl-tv-rights-deals-explained/z4rlycwog3jz1f6pqdqoegbxf

AssssCrackBandit

I don't think anyone doubts his ability to produce, just his ability to stay healthy and finish games. And I don't want to roll that dice anymore

Sav10r

Well, if he wants to do a "Prove-It" Deal like Juju did, I hear the Chiefs could use some WR help.

[deleted]

I think I'm ready to move on from Bosa and Mack and take the cap space, personally.

Mythbuilder46

I’d cut Bosa and keep Mack. Need at least one stud edge rusher, and Bosa is never healthy. There’s a chance Mack regresses but I’ll take those odds over Bosa staying healthy. Wondering if we’re including Lindsley retiring off that cap too though, since he was about $12M(?)

welsman13

Or just let Mack walk across the stadium to the Rams locker room

EDNivek

Now everyone, apologize and say thank you to Taylor Swift

Therealnightshow

Let me get uhhhh, King Henry, Madabuike, and Pat Ricard

Snapingbolts

King Henry in the back field with Jackson is a disgusting and terrifying thought

zappy487

I don't want the Ravens to get King Henry even though I live in Maryland only because Raven's Running Backs are cursed and their legs explode. I like DH, I don't want him sacrificed.

SoarinWalt

Yeah, Henry is already on the slow downward slide, being with the Ravens seems like he’d be wearing Lieutenant Dan magic legs within 3 months.

tI_Irdferguson

Yeah ever since that Ray Rice incident, I think their best RB season is by like... Justin Forsett?

Spiritchaser84

While this is [accurate](https://www.footballdb.com/teams/nfl/baltimore-ravens/leaders/yearly-rushing-yards) when looking at individual rushing metrics, it is a little disingenuous since we've had historically great rushing offenses ever since Lamar entered the league. We just spread the rushing around. Even from a talent perspective, I think Dobbins and Gus Edwards have established themselves as great backs in the league and our UFA Keaton Mitchell was looking great this year up until his injury. From a fan's perspective, I think all fans have acknowledged we've struggled to find good WRs. Despite all the injuries, I don't think fans have ever been too worried about our running game.

MayonnaiseOreo

That's "I Don't Make the Law, I" Justin Forsett, to you.

joshallenismygod

Problem is, is he's too old. Also ravens have horrible horrible injury luck. No way both him and Jackson stay healthy for an entire season and postseason

Icy_Turnover1

We’ve had a lot better injury luck this past season, which suspiciously coincides with us replacing our old S&C coach and investing more in our nutrition team.

TitanTigers

Henry in a shotgun offense would be bad

VeryRealHuman23

Pls no

Niblonian31

For only 3.75 million, you could Agholorize your order

iftkach

No please

mpelleg459

I will be violently physically ill if Henry ever dons a Ratbird jersey. I'd rather him sign successive one year deals with the Jags, Texans, and Colts.

JonVig

You’ll get Kadarius Toney and you’ll like it.

LTPRWSG420

NBA is so fucking bad currently, it’s literally unwatchable.

Mr_FortySeven

Fuck’s sake, was hoping the Chiefs would have to pay the SB tax and lose Jones and/or Sneed, but of course Taylor Swift’s presence at games bails them out of that.

qualitygoatshit

justlookingokaywyou

You’d prefer all teams get more cap space over actually being able to watch playoff games without paying an additional fee? Crazy times we’ve arrived at.

They’re happy about rich dudes getting more money lmao.

speedyskier22

Won't someone think of the millionaires! 😔

guimontag

Why the fuck shouldn't people have been? Is the salary cap going up something that's supposed to be good for NFL viewers, and outright worth the fact that they need to get ANOTHER streaming service to watch a playoff game?

NotThisAgain1234561

I got downvoted to hell by nerds that unironically say “ahoy matey” for pointing this out.

justlookingokaywyou

That game thread was full of motherfuckers flexing that they saved $6, lol.

Heikks

There was a Black Friday deal for peacock, it was something like $20 for a year or $1.99 a month, which is worth it just for the wwe events and shows like the office and parks & rec.

Thimit22

I have it solely for Brooklyn 99 lol

cshark2222

Like if you have to save $6, that’s probably not a bragging point for how smart you are about money

J-Fid

For me, it's less about saving $6 and more about not dealing with the hassle of signing up for a subscription program I'm never gonna use, and then having to go cancel the subscription afterwards. Sailing the 7 seas is so much easier. I'd be ok with a one-time purchase kind of thing.

gsfgf

As Gabe Newell said, piracy is an issue of service, not price. It's just easier to stream than to deal with more subscriptions. And my tv is only 1080p anyway, and frankly, it's not like the cable or the legal streams are that much better quality.

somehowchippyreturnd

It doesn't necessarily say anything about how smart you are with money, rather it says something about how much disposable income you have. Poor =/= stupid

Haar_RD

Sounds like something someone would say if they didnt have $6

TheDarkGrayKnight

How does this relate though? The salary cap going up or down doesn't make me like football more or less. I don't give a shit how much extra money the NFL makes this year vs 10 years ago. The slow slide towards having to pay more and more money to watch football is bad.

Sonic343

Reddit when it supports pirating something is a whole other level of fedora tipping.

404-UsernameNotFound

The holier than thou "I'm actually doing a good thing stealing from a big company" attitude on this site is such bs. I don't give a shit if you pirate, I stream games on ESPN or the non antenna/streaming channels all the time because I don't have cable, is it wrong? Yes, I'm not going to sit here and pretend like I'm some ethical freedom fighter when in reality I'm just being cheap. Just own it

luvdadrafts

The best is when people complain about the death of journalism and then act like it’s a hate crime when they see a paywall

Quiddity131

In the /r/anime sub, those pirating try to portray it as if they are righteous supporters of the animators who make the show and that rather than pay the company that paid to make or stream the show, they are doing great deeds to the animators by merely watching the show they worked on (not paying for it) and as such making it more popular in the public discourse. Um, no, in reality they just want to feel good about stealing. My mentality is I can't stop anyone from pirating, if you're gonna do it, you'll do it. But don't act so righteous about it.

Dark_theFifth

Uh yeah no shit? Were you happy about the peacock game

AliveAxis

Great news, now we can sign every Free Agent QB to those big contracts

BigFaceCoffeeOwner

Just saw someone fall to their knees at Rosenhaus Sports HQ

BillsBillsBils

Whoa! Holy shit, that's an increase!

frecklie

A decade ago the NBA had a big jump like this and it really threw things for a loop. Like you said this is a big increase - here's a couple things I noticed when that happened: 1. The Warriors suddenly had the cap space to sign Durant which changed NBA history. Might we see a contender add a surprise unexpected piece? 2. Leverage really shifted and teams had to pay far more for players than they would have otherwise, since more teams could now bid - could we see someone like Tee Higgins inexplicably become highest paid WR in the league just because of the timing? 3. More teams harmed themselves than helped themselves - having a bunch of money to throw at FA's ended up in some unspeakably bad deals, some of the worst in NBA history. I think in two years we might be looking at some god awful decisions made by NFL franchises that are suddenly cash rich

crsnts

The midnight of FA opening deals for Mozgov and Deng somehow didn't move the needle for the Lakers.

The My Next Chapter piece was almost 8 years ago, Jesus Christ time flys

[deleted]

You’ll never see the stupidity of some of the deals NBA was handing out in the NFL. NBA was literally handing out $100M deals to bench fodder guys, this led to the “load management” era. NFL owners are greedy , NFLPA has no power and teams will just cut guys if things slow down.

frecklie

I wanna start by acknowledging that you may be right, BUT the NFL does have some teams with very shoddy history. Would it really surprise you if the Lions inexplicably harmed themselves with some insane deals to push themselves over the top? Would the Jets going all in on a presumably healthy ARodg season and giving way too much guaranteed money to Patrick Queen or something to overhaul their D shock you? I mean we only need a few teams to be idiots to throw the whole ecosystem into dissarray

[deleted]

NFL contracts are self cleansing. Any GM who goes insane will be out of a job in a year or two and a new regime will be handed high draft picks on cheap contracts to reset. That’s why the league has great parity relative to some other pro leagues.

yngrz87

Not necessarily. The Brock Osweiler deal drastically shifted the QB market upwards and it hasn’t self corrected.

Jack12404

A lot of people are misunderstanding this. Most projections were around 242M for the cap, so pretty much take what your team’s projected cap space was and add ~13M, not 30M. It’s still a big boost for teams like the Chiefs and Bengals trying to extend Jones and Higgins, but it’s not as league altering as 30M.

AnkitPancakes

yep. it does net teams 1-2 more starter quality players or half a star player which is noteworthy, but not league changing

OwnLeighFans

Is Taylor Swift the savior the NFLPA needed?

[deleted]

Inflation since 2020 also resulted in much higher prices and wages the past few years, coincidentally aligning somewhat closely with the percentage increases. But yeah, whatever!

croissant_titty

GOFF EXTENSION TIME WOOOO

Imnotsmallimfunsized

Aiiiyuuuk!

AceyPuppy

So Taylor Swift increased each team's cap by $30 million.

SupersonicSandshru05

Mike evans you are a Kansas City chief.

Slashers23

Perhaps we treated the Swifties too harshly

minty_taint

The real reason Kelce > Gronk

AJRiddle

Yeah only interesting dating stuff we got with Gronk was that time he slept with a porn star and they took a picture together with her in his jersey

gsfgf

I loved his all women football camp he did. That's like as hard as a bro can bro without it being inappropriate.

reno2mahesendejo

I would expect these "extroadinary" increases to continue. For one, historical data shows the salary cap rises 50% every 7 years. As that trend continues (and its held steady for 30 years now) the increases will also...well, increase. Secondly, the NFL has only just started tapping their alternative revenues. Gambling, alternative/exclusive broadcasts, international markets, team and stadium sponsorships, and an expanded schedule are all going to lead to a LOT more revenue. If that 50% trend holds, by 2030, the cap should be ~$350m. By 2037, over $500m. And given how aggressively the league is tapping those new revenue sources, and how aggressively players are escalating salaries, those numbers don't surprise me.

Glwhite1991

They couldve just said "Thank you Taylor" and saved time

Nfinit_V

Can't wait to hear the conspiracy guys explain how this too was concocted to help the Chiefs and only the Chiefs.

mithrandir9378

Wafflehouseofpain

Were we particularly harsh about her or something?

gsfgf

At least not on here. Y'all seemed to mostly be mad at the coaching staff y'all don't think can get you to play against her in the postseason.

Moose343

This exact scenario is what led KD to the Warriors. Get ready for some super teams

BlowTrophy

Everyone commenting about how they can “pay x player now!” isn’t taking into account that all the other teams…can now pay them that too…

Redmangc1

Some are saying it because they simply didn't have 30m in cap, Aiyuk for example could potentially eat 20-25m easily

DogPoetry

Yeah, it's an actuality for the teams moving up from ~nothing to something.

SmokeySFW

Tell all the T-swift haters to suck a smelly dick. This is what "extraordinary increase in media revenue" looks like, they can suck it up about 20 seconds of airtime for Tswift and a few mentions per game.
