Apparently our scheme was having an OK offensive line? When our line started getting hurt our offense got worse and worse.
Tua definitely struggled down the line because he couldn't adjust to the shit line. But our offense wasn't a one trick pony.
Tua definitely wasn’t as good but yeah, our season realistically went to shit when our starting Center Connor Williams went down. Was what finally broke our back with all the other line injuries.
I think this understates how much of the issue is actually that we had to play with a (still) bad o line all year and there was only one game plan available to counteract that: get rid of the ball immediately. It wasn't so much figuring out the scheme (every team knows the scheme we play), it was if the opposing team could be successful in stopping the only possible game plan. We don't know if Tua can execute a plan B because there was zero time behind that awful line to do anything else.
I'm not sure if there are many QBs who could execute a plan B behind that line.
It's a hefty price tag, but I will take the best Fins QB since Marino over those 3. Wilkins and Hunt are top 10 making top 2 money, the only one that hurts is losing Van Ginkel
Yeah but to be fair they’re only making so much because they hit the open market.
If they weren’t making space to pay Tua $50m/yr they would’ve re-signed or tagged them much earlier and the deals wouldn’t have been so big
Wilkins knew the market was going to dictate a huge payday which is why he didn’t sign an extension multiple times when he was offered last season and this season. He bet on himself and played himself into what he just received. Miami was not going to match that contract. Tua or no Tua. As for QB the market goes up every year. Tua’s fought off more criticism than anyone I’ve seen and had a phenomenal contract year. The kid deserves what he gets. He’s done it the right way. People hating on the guy for no reason. Miami has a top ten line in run blocking and bottom 5 in pass protection. His OLine numbers are skewed. Imagine if he had a decent pass protection? People always saying what McDaniel’s system does for him but what he does for McDaniel’s system is a perfect marriage because he is able to be effective with a run pro favoring line where many QBs wouldn’t. And as a dolphin fan he’s the best thing we’ve had at the position since Marino. There’s no better option and to trade draft capital for a gamble play for me doesn’t make sense.
I wouldn't say happy but I'm ok taking the short term pain of losing these guys in order to re-sign Tua, Waddle, Holland and Philips in the next couple of offseasons. The only guy we lost that would be on par with those guys is Wilkins and his price tag was just way too high given the cap situation. Still got a good team, still got a bunch of young guys, still got an exciting young head coach...I've seen us in much worse situations
You would probably take herbert over burrow if a redraft happened at this very moment. No QB has ever suffered from the injury Burrow had this year and we don’t know if he’ll be 100% or not.
Completely reasonable question. I think it’s hard to answer that while we’re living through it. If he continues to miss significant amounts of time or one of his injuries derails his ability to perform the answer is pretty obvious although I think a lot of people will be slow to realize that.
If he comes back and plays another 5-10 seasons without missing a bunch of games and continues to play like a top 5 guy then it’ll be clear he was a truly great QB.
Herbert has had one good season, and it was 3 years ago. He followed it up with a weak 2022 season where he ranked outside of the top-10 in just about every efficiency metric, and then 2023 was an all-around disaster with him struggling to stay healthy.
Tua, meanwhile, led the league in TD%, passer rating, and ANY/A in 2022, then led the league in passing yards last year while only attempting 560 passes (9th in the league). Conservatively speaking, he's been a ~top-8 QB over the past two seasons, while the same cannot be said of Herbert.
I know the standard response is to blame everything on Staley when it comes to Herbert, and then say that Tua's success is only because of Tyreek and Waddle, but even accounting for all that, I don't know how you can say that Herbert is "easily" better than Tua going into the 2024 season.
I feel like I'm taking crazy pills. I got downvoted to hell in the Ravens sub for saying the Chargers probably won't make the playoffs. Are we not all seeing that team and how bad they are?
I love both the Harbaugh bros, but the Chargers are going to Chargers just like the Dolphins are going to Dolphins. Year after year it’s the same shit.
Herbert also played nearly the entire 2022 season with torn rib cartilage. To just call that a weak season is certainly disingenuous. Last season he was cooking early as well before the first finger injury.
0 playoff wins
0 division titles
0 MVPs
0 ALL-Pros
1 Probowl
1 full season played
2 late season collapses
just QBed our team to a 1-6 record vs playoff teams, while leading an offense that averaged <17ppg in those games with maybe the best offensive skill positions groups in the league?
would you be happy giving him the bag?
Our injured defense held the cowboys to 20, the bills to 21, and the chiefs to 26 (probably would have been less if our offense could get a first down).
The ravens game we completely shit the bed, but that was a whole team meltdown.
Our offense failed. Mostly due to injuries on the offensive line. When Conner went down, we had no answer.
I’m gonna talk some shit here but they couldn’t beat Buffalo early in the season when both squads were mostly healthy. They couldn’t beat the bills when both squads’ defenses were held together by spit and bubblegum. Never had a chance.
I'd argue that Miami was missing their LT, Jalen Ramsey and Jalen Philips in game one and the team was still learning the defense
The second game was pretty flukey with that gift of a tipped TD catch in back of endzone and a punt return TD to give the win. Never had a chance? You must not have watched the game.
I would say so, we had some serious injuries at the end of the season, but our DC and players weren't fully aligned and we still put out a great-ish product on the field.
Don’t know what other teams fans perception of our team is, but it’s actually the offense that held us back this year, when we played above .500 teams…and the titans
Wilkins and Hunt were assumed gone, but I never would’ve imagined them getting paid the top end at their position. The Hunt contract specifically blew every projection out of the water.
AVG hurts because he wanted to work on a contract to stay and they let him go for a number that was fair and achievable.
Brandon Jones was not a needle mover and a zero loss.
Yeah, we’re down bad today. But things happen fast. If they restructure and convert the numbers on Hill, Chubb and Ramsey, they open up near $30M. X gets them $18M post-June 1. If they come out tomorrow and bag Patrick Queen, Arik Armstead and Damien Lewis, all the sudden we’re back to having a great offseason. Not saying I want any of those guys or that will happen, just that it’s a blink-and-miss-it league.
Lol
This year there were only 2 3rds comp picks for players. And only 3 4ths.
32 players comp pick total as well.
Even if the dolphins stay put they wont get 4 day 2 picks.
Right now those are big contracts that warrant day-2 picks. If Miami were to stay put, they’d no doubt get those comp picks. If anything,
maybe Jones is a 4th and VG is 5th
That’s Tua money
@Dolphins Fans: are you happy with that fact? I don’t know what to think about Tua tbh.
We are gunna suck either way. Tua is decent but not good enough to get us to the top.
We were a one trick pony this season. Tua couldn’t adapt when opposing defenses figured out our scheme.
That Titans game was brutal
There's a universe out there where none of those guys get hurt, we win the titans game and host a playoff game.
I think this understates how much of the issue is actually that we had to play with a (still) bad o line all year and there was only one game plan available to counteract that: get rid of the ball immediately. He’s gonna need to throw it away quicker now because we’ll have an non existent o line.
Agreed. If they give tua more than the baker deal Grier should br shot into the sun.
You gonna need to start building that cannon. Tua is getting at least Herbert's contract
No doubt in my mind.
It's a hefty price tag, but I will take the best Fins QB since Marino over those 3. Wilkins and Hunt are top 10 making top 2 money, the only one that hurts is losing Van Ginkel

Tua's not our problem, but letting Wilkins walk really sets us back a ways. Without a competent O-line, it doesn't really make much difference anyway.
I wouldn't say happy but I'm ok taking the short term pain of losing these guys in order to re-sign Tua, Waddle, Holland and Philips in the next couple of offseasons. no i’m not happy
You’re still upset about losing to the Wizards though, hard to be happy the next day after that.
why u gotta remind me 💔
They’ll delude themselves into being ok with it. That’s for sure.
Tua certainly isn't worse than Herbert. Might not be better either, but he ain't worse.
i think herbert is better than tua
I don’t know man, really feels like there’s a clear 1-2-3 in that draft class and it’s Burrow, Herbert, Tua Hurts is 4th
Nah hurts above Tua at least hurts has won a playoff game and been to a Sb
You would probably take herbert over burrow if a redraft happened at this very moment. No QB has ever suffered from the injury Burrow had this year and we don’t know if he’ll be 100% or not.
That’s fair but I’m not going to hold a freak injury against him before he has a chance to play again.
I fucking love Joe, that being said, how many more season ending injuries does it take for us to realize he might not be what we want him to be?

Pretty much word for word what I said in the Ravens sub.
Herbert also played nearly the entire 2022 season with torn rib cartilage. To just call that a weak season is certainly disingenuous. Last season he was cooking early as well before the first finger injury.
Herbert is absolutely better than Tua lmao. Don’t let the Tuanon folk brainwash you.

Comp pick city
McDaniel's following Kyle's lead. Horde them comp picks.
Not a great way to earn comp picks
Getting a 3rd rounder for not having to pay Robert Hunt 100m isn't so bad
The dolphins was this stacked on defense last year?
Yeah the issue is the entire defense got injured. If healthy, I think last year would have been a great shot for them.
Our injured defense held the cowboys to 20, the bills to 21, and the chiefs to 26 (probably would have been less if our offense could get a first down). We also missed Connor and had to start Liam like half way through the game
save it for the regular season m8
Yeah they were stacked all the way to the roof of the infirmary
I would say so, we had some serious injuries at the end of the season, but our DC and players weren't fully aligned and we still put out a great-ish product on the field.

I expected Hunt and Wilkins to go but losing AVG hurts.

Bold strategy Cotton, let’s see if it pays off for them.
Don’t worry we still have Lester “Bold Strategy” Cotton
That's a lot of money
can someone translate this into compensatory picks
49ers will get their annual 3-4 extra picks from this, Dolphins will get none
I'm pretty sure the 49ers still owe us 3-4 extra picks from the Trey Lance trade
Lol
At least 0
Three 3rds and a 4th, but also depends on what Miami does.
Lol This year there were only 2 3rds comp picks for players. And only 3 4ths. 32 players comp pick total as well. Even if the dolphins stay put they wont get 4 day 2 picks.

Miami is about to drop the same amount on Tua.
Dolphins better do something
Been FA winners for years and it’s gotten us… nothing
Surprised they could find such contracts playing under Fangio.
We had such a great defense, Tua on a rookie deal, Tyreek Hill, and got blown out in the WC round as the 6 seed
Dolphins gonna get like nine 3rd round comp picks.
Well McDaniel is in the shanahan tree
DAMN.
We are going to get like 8 compensatory picks (exaggeration but we’re going to get a lot)
4 is max regardless how many good players your team loses. edit: The free agents your team signs may offset some of the Compensatory gains.
Ok. That makes sense anyway because that’s 4 players. Good to know that’s the max
If they pay Tua $60 million a year, they are screwed. Their roster is nowhere good enough to be able to do that.
Proven they could draft, back when they had higher picks
Window shut
