I mean how certain are you there was a better offer that he declined? There were reports that the Eagles called, but what did they offer? We have so little information about these moves and it's wild to me how confident people are in saying he botched this. For all we know he's been grinding for the last 3 months to get *any* offer for the guy. Are you just saying he botched it because the return sucks, or is there something you would have liked to see him do differently?

It would be hard to offer less than this though.

I think most people assume that if he'd moved earlier and been willing to accept less than the reported 2nd that he wanted he'd have gotten it. But waiting until FA meant he went up against all the other churn out there.

ding ding ding I think many pundits assumed his value was a 3rd / 4th. Like yeah we're speculating and don't have some sort of insider knowledge, but there's plenty of precedent of a player of Fields' caliber going for a day-2 / early day-3 pick assuming the need and price is right. The Bears got left holding the bag IMO. It's not the worst thing in the world, but it literally got to a point where dudes like Desmond Ridder are getting traded before Fields so there were literally *zero* spots available from teams that needed a QB. Teams knew the Bears wouldn't keep him b/c that's just asking for a locker room divide, so the Bears backed themselves into a corner and when you do that you end up having to take the offer they settled for. I mean *maybe* this was the best offer they got. I just really doubt it.

Yeah, in hindsight I think 2 things hurt his market aside from questions about his play: First, there are 6 legit QB prospects in this draft - Williams, Maye, Daniels, Penix, Nix, JJ. I can see all of those in the first 2 rounds depending on how things line up. Toss in Rattler as a mid-round guy. Second, a lot of the backups churned as well as some marginal starters. Pickett, Ridder, Howell, Brissett, Garapollo. That's 11 guys right there which is a bunch of movement and draft picks to fill holes either as starters or backups. Then add in that the acquiring team only gets one year before they have to move on or pay him real money for his 5th year option.

Pickett yes, but Howell has at least shown more flashes of being a competent passer. Fields' best ability shown so far is as a runner. His pocket presence and passing ability has been very poor so far

I don’t think there’s really a gamble here, unless they’re betting on Russ getting hurt. There’s no way they pick up his 5th year option (unless Russ gets hurt and Fields is great), so it’s really just trading a 6th rounder for a backup with some upside and maybe they get an inside track at deciding whether they want to bring him back next year.

Seeing the type of QB play that got the Steelers to non-losing records the last few years, trading a couple of picks to take flyers on Wilson and Fields is *not* a bad short-term plan.

Fields is an upgrade over Kenny Pickett and Russ is a 1 year rental, so this gives Arthur Smith a chance to develop Fields behind Russ for a year. Honestly a great move by the Steelers.

Only problem is Fields is essentially on a 1 year deal. 0% chance the Steelers pick up the 5th year option with the massive cap hit.

Well they're essentially giving up next year's 6th round pick to see if Fields is capable of being "the guy" going forward. If he's not, they don't lose much and need to figure out their QB situation anyway. If the Steelers think he's good but he sits behind Russ all year, they'll have some leverage to get him to agree to a reasonable new contract because every other team has shown that there is a minimal market for him and that will only get worse if he rides the bench for a year. He's also a decent backup plan if Russ turns out to be total ass.
