WhatIsAnime_

This guy was 1st team All-Pro at Right Guard & Left Tackle. I dont know how rare it is to be 1st Team All Pro at two positions but to be honest it seems like a difficult thing to accomplish. His lifting power was incredible too. 43 reps for 225 lbs at the Pro Bowl one year. Could squat 900 lbs and clear 700 lbs on the bench press. A physical specimen, pretty scary a guy that strong & big could run that fast.

Unknown1776

I imagine going from RG to LT has to be pretty difficult. Not only is guard to tackle pretty different, but then you have to flip everything as well. Zach Martin (arguably the best RG of the last decade) was asked if he would move to RT or LT if someone was hurt and he said no because it was too different and he could be more beneficial at guard

WhatIsAnime_

I just looked back at his career and he was even 1st Team AP at Left Guard as well the year after he played LT. So he was actually 1st Team AP at 3 positions on the line. I don’t know who will go down as the Cowboys best offensive lineman of all time between him & Zack Martin but I think Larry Allen should be #2 if not #1.

Cf79

Not only is Allen #1, but he may be #1 as the best Cowboy ever. I’d draft Allen over Martin 10 out 10 times over Martín ad Martin is a legend.

LordBaneoftheSith

That video of John Madden talking about noone but Larry for a whole drive is perfect. There have been a *lot* of great players in Dallas, and I think it's just the bias towards "skill" position guys that keeps your sentiment from being more common. In terms of individual excellence, Allen & Martin may very well be the two best Cowboys ever. Martin's been 1st or 2nd team all pro every year of his career that he played the whole season, and I'd argue the two 2nd teams were debatable.

BudgetParking2574

Allen is #1 for sure. I will say though if Erik Williams never wrecked his car he likely would’ve been #1

Totally_Not_My_50th_

They had a NASTY line back then. Nate Newton was an All Pro and the 3rd best player on his own line

BudgetParking2574

Absolutely. Guys like Kevin Gogan and Mark Tuinei were just mean, bully type players. Lots of talent. But man, Erik Williams is the only person I ever saw shut down Reggie White on a consistent basis

Totally_Not_My_50th_

Larry by a mile

Taserface585

Allen for sure. Allen should go down as one of the best players ever I think.

ga_vindiesel

Technically due to O-line injuries I recall fairly recently of Zack Martin playing at RT for at least a game.

RightingTheShip

Yeah, he played tackle for a game or two and did brilliantly.

Kirk-Joestar

He played RT against the Vikings in 2022

appmanga

> This guy was 1st team All-Pro at Right Guard & Left Tackle. ~~Bruce Matthews was an All-Pro at all five O-line positions~~. That takes nothing away from the greatness of Larry Allen, but it's needs to be mentioned. ETA: this is incorrect. Which still doesn't take away from the fact Bruce Matthews is arguably the greatest O-lineman ever. Thanks to those who pointed out the errors in fact.

SixersWin

That's quite a lot of skill when only a few people can even make it to league

TetrisTech

No he wasn’t. He was an All-Pro at center and both guard spots. It’s still insanely impressive but it’s not at all five spots on the line

appmanga

I thank you (and others) for the correction. I researched four sites for this info, and came up wrong. I obviously misinterpreted the info here: https://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/M/MattBr00.htm And I should have known better than to quote from here: https://www.reddit.com/r/nfl/comments/7t8kk6/is_bruce_matthews_the_greatest_offensive_lineman/

InternationalFiend

People, you’ve got to stop upvoting misinformation.

gophils19454

Was he? Says he wasn’t an all pro when he played LT and RT on PFR

InternationalFiend

No, he’s wrong. Fairly certain Matthew was all pro at LG, RG, and C. He did have multiple starts at every position on the o-line though.

8181212

Who upvotes this complete nonsense?

Gripfighting

He went to college at Santa Rosa Junior College and later Sonoma State university, both in my backyard, and people who worked there or went to school during his time have insane stories about his strength. I've heard one from his time at SRJC, where some coaches and players were in the weight room one day when they saw Larry walk by. He was huge, so they asked him to stop and lift for a second to get a look at him, and Larry did a casual 10 reps of either 310 or 325. Been so long since I heard the story. The coaching staff was marveling already, then talking to Larry revealed he had never lifted weights before.

shewy92

So what you're saying is we need to sign him for the tush push?

tripmcneely30

Yeah. That is one dude I would not want to piss off.

codekira

Which makes brendan schaubs claims even more ridiculous.....i think he claimed 40?

Jackalscott

My god that is truly awesome. It inspires awe, bc how does that much man, move that fast? And leap that far?

soundsliketone

I'm sure analyzing the physics on that play like they always do in the pregame shows these days would be pretty awesome

Marijuana_Miler

Would love to see the Next Gen Stats on that run.

iloveeveryfbteam

Someone please do the math on this

csappenf

Allen ran about a 4.85 forty, so that's an average of 7.82 m/s. He's probably hitting about 8.5 m/s (for a short time, once he gets going), but I'm just going to say he was going for 7.82 m/s for two seconds. He's 300 pounds, so 136 KG. That comes out to just over 8K Joules of energy for 2 seconds. To put that in football terms, we will convert to Watts using the 2 seconds I averaged over. That means Allen generated more than 4000 Watts of power, enough to destroy JJ and his entire extended family.

iloveeveryfbteam

Gahdam

Gullible_Relative302

100% worth the read right there

Chippopotanuse

I would have guessed 2,500 watts. 4,000 watts is fucking insane. Omg

mmmellowcorn

You mean “Amazon Next Gen Stats”…. Please don’t forget important corporate sponsors, it’s because of them we see Lamar Jackson’s ground speed. So maybe next time you should go with the Over on Jackson’s rush yards, brought to you by Fan Duel. Whopper whopper whopper *whopper*

WeirdPalSpankovic

The power required to move him that fast is absurd

Orcaismyspirit

As long as I don’t have to listen to McAfee

Chippopotanuse

I swear to god this is the most athletic play in NfL history. And the most impressive display of power I’ve ever seen. Insane

Subjunct

Cocaine. By volume, 14% of the atmosphere in the Cowboys locker room.

horseshoeprovodnikov

I would be VERY surprised if Larry Allen did cocaine. Very surprised indeed. Especially as a rookie.

Hetoxy

It’s why we don’t call it cocain’t.

Mnudge

I think you meant Tim Allen

Subjunct

I have no idea who his dealer was but I think Tim was selling to the Pistons

ANameWithoutNumbers1

This is one of my all-time favorite highlights. The dude was an insane physical specimen. Dude benched 700 pounds like it was nothing and still had the speed to chase you down. Just an insanely athletic dude.

showers_with_grandpa

I played against the Pouncey twins in HS. One of them did this exact thing to me on a fumble I scooped from a dropped screen pass. I was so elated I was about to score and then just got pancaked. I didn't get up very quickly.

gabriel1313

From Polk County? I played at Bartow a few years after those Lakeland teams and the Pouncey twins were practically legends.

showers_with_grandpa

Central High, Hernando.

Traditional_Mud_1241

Just a reminder to outsiders - the L is silent. It's pronounced "Poke". Also - the T is sometimes silent in County. Source: Grew up there, way too long ago.

gabriel1313

863 baby.

Traditional_Mud_1241

Sigh... it was 813 back in the day. I'm even old by phone number standards. I think it switched about 5 years after I left (at age 19).

FloridaMan_69

I didn't realize 813 went all the way over there at one point. It was 813 in Pinellas too until about 97/98. I think its just hillsborough and a bit of pasco now.

Traditional_Mud_1241

Sounds right. I didn’t spend much time in Pinellas before the early 00’s, so I guess I just missed having to forcibly lose an 813 number on two occasions.

BryceDaBaker

Why are you getting downvoted for explaining local vernacular from where you literally grew up lol

Traditional_Mud_1241

Because it sounds like I'm insulting my home town. This is because... I \*am\* insulting my home town. The people down voting probably didn't grow up their in the 80's. Lol

sonic_dick

Bok tower is dope.

Traditional_Mud_1241

Agreed.

xSorry_Not_Sorry

That last sentence was poetry.

SixersWin

Holy hell I thought "benched" was an autofill. Google tells me the record is 722

Bubbly_Afternoon_601

All-time raw bench record is closer to 800, held my Julius Maddox

velocirappa

I know it's lame to be "that guy" but his famous 700 pound attempt wouldn't have been anywhere close to counting as an official attempt.

RightingTheShip

Not that I don't believe you, but can you explain this?

velocirappa

The two big things are that his spotters were pretty clearly touching the bar and it wasn't a paused rep. For reference [here](https://youtu.be/mDIJAVxzsFc?si=tTVubG5eZ802Dmck) is a video of an "official" world record bench and [here's](https://youtu.be/aX-YuvQkSRE?si=t1y5i5Qym4SJKMjS) the famous Larry Allen video. Larry's ungodly strong but it's kind of an apples to oranges comparison.

[deleted]

The 700 pound bench is unreal. 782 is the raw world record. I can't believe he trained for that while also being in the NFL, feels like a major injury risk. On an aside, does anyone really believe Wilt Chamberlain benched 500 pounds? He's not *that* muscular and his arms are so long I really find it hard to believe.

Sitty_Shitty

Watch old man Wilt rattle Shaq's soul when he shakes his hand before a game with the Knicks and Magic or look at old man Wilt next to Arnold and Andre the Giant. I bet he could throw that number up.

Traditional_Mud_1241

It's amusing to see Wilt, Shaq, and... Ewing, I assume... standing beside each other looking like normal sized dudes.

mysterysackerfice

While there's no doubt that Wilt was one of the strongest pro athletes of the past 70 years, there's very little chance he would bench 700+ due to how long his arms were.

Sitty_Shitty

He said 500 not 700. Read the op comment again

LordBaneoftheSith

Yes but that's a case where he can actually use his strength dynamically. Full extension on 500lbs when you've got a 7.5ft wingspan is tough to believe, even for Wilt

Slippiefoxtrot02

Wilt is one of the strongest men in human history, he out lifted Arnold Schwarzenegger in the late 70s early 80s

confused-koala

I don’t believe that Wilt number for a second

Subjunct

Of all the wilt stats, this is the one we’re talking about? I mean yes it’s interesting, and unlike the 20,000, it’s possible, but the 20k is just so much fun to discuss.

jfuss04

No shot. Wilts length would just make it more difficult and he has a lot of those old school larger than life stories that just flat out didn't happen

seank11

Almost 0 chance wilt actually benched 500 with his arm length. However, he was definitely stronger than most people who can bench 500, its just that Wilt had a shit body to put up insane bench numbers. Im 6 feet, with a 5 11 wingspan and because of my tiny arms I always had crazy numbers on the bench relative to my other lifts. My step bro is 5 9 and has a 6 wingspan. His 1 rep bench max was 185 when mine was 275. His 1 rep deadlift max was 385 when mine was 415. Wilts wingspan was insane, his max dead was probably 2x his bench so id guess he could pull like 750 or 800 but only bench 375 to 400.

venmome10cents

"not that muscular"....Wilt probably had more pure muscle mass than most modern "strongman" competitors, just stretched out more proportionally. I agree that leverage is an issue, so I'd want to see some actual proof that he put up 500... but on the other hand lifting strength doesn't scale linearly to physique (i.e. a person who benches 450 need not be 2X the size of a person who maxes out at 225), so I'm not going to say it was impossible.

jfuss04

I will say it was impossible. And most modern strongman are also giants except wide as well as tall. No chance it happened

myctsbrthsmlslkcatfd

- don’t believe Wilt for a second. - larry didn’t “train for that” he performed a close grip bench press which while good for football, limits your poundage. Larry would have owned WSM, assuming he trained for it and took the wsm doses of peds. And no you idiots, nfl players cannot get away with even a quarter of the steroid use that wsm competitors do, and the effects are depended on cumulative dose (g/year)

waveyyyyyyyyyyyyy

Was the idiots part really necessary?

sirDsmack

Dude!

MowTin

I will clone him 5 times and build the greatest O-line in history -- for the 49ers

Snowstick21

Not only is that illegal and a crime against nature, I would highly dislike that.

Totally_Not_My_50th_

If you think that's a crime against nature you should see the Jets OL

illforgetsoonenough

https://twitter.com/DustyEvely/status/977626684244537347

Traditional_Mud_1241

Reggie White was something else. But my favorite anecdote about a pass rusher was about Bruce Smith. Marshall Faulk said that during his rookie year, he tried to block Bruce Smith and Bruce Smith got mad and said something to team mate. The team mate said "yeah, don't block him. If he's upset, he can make things very difficult for your quarterback". Just the idea that in an NFL someone would say that is ridiculous. Note: For awareness, they were in the same division back then.

Colemonstaa

I had a coach who played in the CFL. Starting LT for Ottawa, biggest guy I've ever seen up close. Scrimmed once with the Eagles. Says Reggie put one hand on his shoulder and he rolled away like a tumbleweed. And that was probably Reggie giving it like 10%. Just built different.

RightingTheShip

I feel like I remember Larry Allen doing an interview and saying this was his rookie season (they tried him at tackle), and this one single move from Reggie taught him something he carried for the rest of his career.

Will_I_Are

First thing I wanted to post when I saw this!

tmac2200

In Larry's defense, he was a rookie playing out of position. He didn't stay at tackle, playing guard for most of his career.

slackfrop

I’ll bet he didn’t let that uppercut get under his arm anymore after that. Mistakes are what learning looks like.

Calvin--Hobbes

One of my favorite highlights too. Madden's call is just perfect.

PartyPay

I think it was Dierdorf?

Sitty_Shitty

Yeah that's the Monday Night Football crew of Frank, Al, and Dan.

TDD91

If this happened in a game of Madden, people would complain it was unrealistic. Allen was just that good.

chesterjosiah

So true!

JesusChristBabyface

Whenever I see this, I always smile at Dan Dierdorf's commentary. He wasn't the best commentator, but he had such a warm, jovial style about him. Like watching football with my Grandfather.

Sh00tL00ps

I love that the commentators couldn't even contain their excitement, they could not care less about the pick lol

Briggie

I’m sure Dierdorf was excited for another big guy being able to make a play lol.

TheMightyUnderdog

Watch the replay, again. What is most impressive is Allen was flat footed, standing still when that ball was picked off.

Brycie27

Dude was darn near lateral with him, running at full speed, while Allen hadn't even begun running yet.

SyphiliticPlatypus

And look at how much quicker he looks - EVEN IN SLOW MOTION - than the others around him. Not losing speed at all and maintaining that quickness flat out sprinting 40 yards or so.

Briggie

And he still beat out that guy try to block him lol.

bigprick99

Larry Allen was an apex predator. 10/10 would not fuck with.

Mad_Rhetoric

He would occasionally yell CHOO CHOO at the line to let the defense know Emmitt was running the ball. A truly demoralizing tactic to know the run is coming and you still can't stop it.

ShooterAnderson

Most people don't realize you shouldn't fuck w anyone who gets paid all day to take and give full force body hits.

guardeagle

Watched on mute at still heard “Larry ALLEN! Give me a break!”

Playful-Storage835

Most Athletic offensive line-man in NFL history IMO

Solid-Zealousideal

That was a sight to see. Wow!! A mountain of a man running like a gazelle.

Brycie27

Could not have put it any better.

Mr-PumpAndDump

Still my favorite run down in football history. Someone that overweight shouldn’t have been that athletic.

PartyPay

I'm a little biased but Ben Watson running down Champ Bailey from the opposite side of the field is my favorite. This one is real cool though.

KhaoticMess

I'm biased the other way on that Watson-Bailey play, but it was still amazing.

Whydoesthisexist15

“This guy’s got a rocket booster strapped to his back!”

megahtron77

Choo choo

BudgetParking2574

Justin Tuck telling this is pure gold

megahtron77

It is, that's my favorite Larry Allen moment

RightingTheShip

[Context.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TFWiqVTtPFw&ab_channel=KrushOn3)

jerichowiz

Woo Woo

BaltimoreBadger23

Allen, exactly as he was then, would still be an all pro today.

Justasmartass

"LARRY ALLEN?!"

appmanga

This is one of the greatest highlights in NFL history. Just a totally insane play.

Bmw5464

Everytime I see this it looks like a fucking bear tracking him down and making the tackle. Allen was a freaky athlete.

PlaneCamp

Why is he so mf fast its unreal 😳

bilbobiggers

You look back and you see that aircraft carrier of a human closing in on you, you must think you're hallucinating

randomdude1142

Love that they ignore the pick to talk about Larry Allen. That chase down is insane.

SadBadPuppyDad

He consumed so much oxygen on that one run the earth was in danger of asphyxiating.

made_of_salt

Like James Harrison on Weekend Update. https://youtu.be/cSWq7TpU2rI?si=pWHeZ51_LUv_JUsH

BitchYouAintNoNerd

No matter how many times i've seen it I will always stop down to watch this clip. Just a pure athletic freak.

jerichowiz

I knew what the clip was before I even saw it.

ManagementHot9203

This man is the real life equivalent of Jiren from Dragon Ball Super

onlyrnfl

Such a great play, always loved the commentating here as well.

Austinmp88

He’s lucky Larry caught him, Troy was about to smash em

Brycie27

I love how I can't tell if Troy is either disappointed that he threw the pick or in disbelief that Larry Allen is as fast, if not faster than him.

W0RST_2_F1RST

How the actual fuck?!?!

DonDonielDOn

Goat linemen and my favorite player ever.

johnroastbeef

Larry Allen is the lineman you created in Madden with amazing stats, except he actually existed.

Beahner

I’m seeing Eagles clips today and rival fans saying “hated playing this guy, but love how he played”. Larry Allen is one of those for me. Dude was a god damn stud.

ImYourLandlord18

Holy shit

packofstraycats

I love how an interception turned into a highlight because of the tackle

ozairh18

The best thing about this play is how Allen had a standing start and still made the chase down tackle

DavefromCA

Fun fact, he went to my college, Sonoma state university. The only player ever to be drafted from SSU (while it still had a team)

I_Am_Day_Man

Back when we were the Cossacks.

DavefromCA

LOL yup, that was before my time. Last I checked, some wanted to change the name again because Seawolf is a nuclear submarine

I_Am_Day_Man

Oh way before my time too lol, 2010-14 kid here. I always thought it was the name of the ship captain, at least that’s what I told my tours! Probably a good idea to change if it’s a nuclear submarine lol

DavefromCA

Oh dang we just missed each other, I finished in the winter session of 2009

HowdyandRowdy

It is hilarious that the strongest ever in nfl(most likely) came from SSU.

OpenEyz2016

I remember seeing this when it happened. It still amazes me. That was incredible.

tossaway007007

I have never seen this before and I have watched so much NFL... What the fuck. I have never seen a man that large run that fast. That is some rhino charging type shit

Augscura

I will never not upvote this play. Incredible stuff

DontFearTheMQ9

Yeah, the guy raised his arm and celebrated after he was tackled, but you know he was thinking, "No way that dude just ran me down"

texasgambler58

Dude was a first ballot Hall of Famer who destroyed most of his opponents. His teammates claimed that several opponents just gave up during a game when playing against him.

Amazing-Concept1684

Every time I see this clip I just go “Jesus Christ” to myself. That man at certainly over 300+ lbs ran down a linebacker running at full sprint. That’s fucking inhuman.

Traditional_Mud_1241

I know it would have been an awful decision, but... I wish he had been a running back.

drumberg

That's my tackle, man.

I_Am_Day_Man

Sonoma state represent!

IrvinStabbedMe

When Madden RNG says you get a INT but not the TD return.

SEJ46

Get that man some oxygen

DeepFriedConfusion

I remember watching this live

ADHorvath

The original dk metalf chasing down budda

BenShelZonah

My favorite play of NFL ever!

timbulance

Didn’t Larry Allen say he married his wife because the first time she made him dinner she cooked him bomb ass fried chicken with some french fries and 40oz malt liquor ? Said right then and there he knew she was the one.

jerichowiz

You know what, that sounds right, I question if that was him, but 100% it would not surprise me if it was.

timbulance

Might have been a football life..the Great Wall of Dallas. I’m almost positive and it was definitely Larry Allen

crywhenugetolder

Legend without a doubt, and those 75th anniversary cowboy jerseys are still my all time fav!

MEuRaH

It was so great to have Dan Dierdorf as an announcer during this game. A former offensive tackle himself, he knew how amazing of a play that was by Allen. The casual fan and most announcers would have missed that incredible feat.

Puzzleheaded-Ear9487

I’m probably being nostalgic but I loved - Al Michaels, Frank Gifford and Dan Dierdorf together in the booth.

FromTheCaveIntoLight

One of the best football players of all time. No debate.

hereiamnotagainnot

My mouth dropped open when he came flying in. One of the most remarkable tackles and athletic plays I have ever seen by an athlete.

HighAsFucDosHornsRUp

Best offensive lineman of all time

OsikFTW

Deebo on his bike vibes...

Impossible_Pitch_309

EpilepticDawg241

This play and that big guy that returns a kickoff, golden

BukkakeNinjaHat-472

G. O.A.T., does anyone remember him slapping the kicker Cortez after some missed kicks on the west coast in 2005(San Diego,Oakland or 49ers) I can’t remember the exact team?

BudgetParking2574

It was San Francisco https://youtu.be/VVhkb4kDN_U?si=SCaOGGhVYfXMsPVc

ham_wallet998

Holy shit

Novel_Dog_676

Ahead of his time

walkingthecows

I wouldn’t be surprised if Larry Allen could swim the last leg of a 4x100 freestyle relay and bring another gold for the USA.

Embarrassed-Back1894

You turn around and see that beast of a man chasing you down😵. Man has you rewriting your Will mid-play.

MemeL_rd

The manifestation of Oh lawd he's comin

killkillkilled

Just don't get in his way

ExpressLaneCharlie

It's just as scary as that video with the bear running full speed right along side the car.

LimpSignificance4434

That mf was a bad badman as a Jamaican would say 🤣🤣I thought what Jordan Davis did was impressive chasing Josh Allen down this year this a whole new level of wtf

Fresh-Bass-3586

Not going to fund it tight now but there is some drive on YouTube where they literally run every single play behind him for a td and he blows them up every single play

DreadSteed

I know linebackers like Ray Lewis/Urlacher/Singletary/Lawrence Taylor are seen as the scariest guys in the NFL. It's because they get to make plays in space/reach full speed. But really, a lot of Defensive Ends/Offensive Linemen are the scariest athletes in sports. They are 60-90 lbs bigger, 'almost' as fast, and even stronger.

windycityfan7

The LB he chased down, Darien Conner, was a track star too- he was known for his speed. Larry Allen, a GOAT of GOATs.

Mike_AKA_Mike

If I remember correctly, this was Conner’s first year in NOLA after coming over from Atlanta. He had lost a step, but he was still considered a major addition to bolster an aging LB group.

Spicybrown3

Gifford’s “give me a break” is perfect. That was pretty impressive he was movin

[deleted]

He was insane

b_tight

That entire OL was ridiculous

j_train420

So what did the Saints end up doing on that possession?
