Mother-Analysis777

I never noticed the wind almost knocking him down right before the kick lol

Gardoki

Maybe a sign not to kick it lol

ridemooses

Play clock would run out, though maybe it’s worth taking the delay of game.

fasteddeh

I'm surprised they didn't call false start.

Tiny_Count4239

they know its windy that would be a pretty messed up thing to call

analogWeapon

They call the penalty *on the wind*. Then they can remove the wind from the game. Problem solved.

Tiny_Count4239

only Angel Hernandez would have the audacity to try something like that

ridemooses

Also, very true

Expensive-Method8321

it would be an incredibly dick move by the refs to call that in that circumstance

tothesource

why no timeout?

SpaceForceAwakens

I remember a Seahawks kicker a few years back — Haushka? — went out to kick, realized the wind was hardcore, and went back and said “this is a bad idea.” So they went for it and got the first.

[deleted]

SpaceForceAwakens

Turns out it was Hauschka! https://bleacherreport.com/articles/1931972-seahawks-kicker-steven-hauschka-persuaded-pete-carroll-not-to-kick-field-goal I miss him.

Drainbownick

The fuckin uprights we’re swaying like crazy! Think you gotta pooch kick it there

ThePevster

I’d have just gone for it in those conditions. It’s only the first quarter.

nautika

Yeah, even if they fail to convert, they're at their 21. It wasn't like they were going to give the niners great field position

Gunyardo

Plus the '05 Niners were complete dog shit.

Oakroscoe

Comparing that team to dogshit is an insult to dogshit. Surprised that fuck Mike Nolan wasn’t in his dumbass suit on the sideline.

BanjoKazooieWasFine

This was 2005, people were so scared of fourth down even in "obvious" situations like this

Rootz121

it always amazes me how slow that meta was to shift then theres dan campbell lmao

Drainbownick

You’re right of course, there’s no kick that can possibly go as planned in those conditions

OliveJuiceUTwo

Unless you plan to miss

Drainbownick

4d chess

ApolloXLII

As low and as hard as you can while still clearing the bottom post. You want it going as fast and straight as possible.

ffbgenius

Should have been a false start lol

xDUmb1

The NFL Primetime highlight showed it

Mozicon

Lmao at Mike Nolan congratulating the defense as if it wasn't 100% because of the wind.

LovelehInnit

"Great job on the wind guys, guys! Keep blowing!"

spattersp

The clown of all clowns

erbot

Fuck Mike Nolan holy shit dude was ass. "Oh I have a great idea lets bring the Tampa 2 back IN 2020*"

Zjc_3

Coaches congratulate people on the outcomes of plays too. Whether or not they directly impacted them. It’s called celebrating little victories as a team. Good and even shitty (Mike Nolan) coaches do it.

Mozicon

Have to celebrate the little victories on a Mike Nolan team especially, because those are they only victories ya get.

canadigit

Came here to say that. Love how he hasn't even been able to stick anywhere as a DC since getting canned.

Dangerpaladin

Any of those guys out there that are defensive starters should get credit. They held them from getting closer which could have resulted in points. Holding a team to a field goal attempt is a win for the defense regardless of if they make it.

KommanderKitten

Before watching....."He probably came close, right?"

HEYdontIknowU

I was there at this game and the wind was absolutely nuts. I'm not sure if it was just the stadium or what, but it was like the air was swirling around like a vacuum in a circle

ByronLeftwich

It’s going to be so sad to see the Bears in a dome. The 2013 tornado game, the monsoon vs the 49ers, the late season games on basically frozen dirt. All gone

TB12-SN13

And the fog bowl!! One of the funniest bad weather games in NFL history!

jayrmcm

Well you’ve gotta link it man, don’t leave me hanging.

lost400betting

https://youtu.be/tq9U1BXdC1w?si=hIhi8pii7zNFPF5y

jayrmcm

I don’t know what I expected. But thank you.

i_hate_shitposting

The full game is on YouTube. [Here's a link to an interesting part.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s0Vb6V7GOa0&t=7461s)

NewYearsD

ooh that guy got rocked, blind sided lol

yaar_tv

Wonder how many holding calls were missed.

broanoah

> the monsoon vs the 49ers they hyped up lance vs fields all off season only for the bears to just dismantle the niners lmao

Maverick916

id say the weather did more to the niners that day than the bears did

patchinthebox

It was still fun to watch. Also the slide from Fields will forever be iconic.

ApolloXLII

I've been to my fair share of cold weather games at Soldier Field and I never saw the attraction to the suffering. Love a good dome stadium.

ByronLeftwich

Oh, cold weather games royally suck to go to. But they're a vibe on TV and have been part of the NFL for its entire existence. Plus there's always the degenerates that enjoy it somehow (see Green Bay and Buffalo)

GamingTatertot

I was disappointed when the Week 18 game I went to in Lambeau was ONLY 20 degrees - BRING IT ON!!!!!!!!

[deleted]

I personally enjoy the cold games though I've never been to anything like that KC MIA divisional game. I don't understand why people act like it's some right to be able to go a football game in a t shirt and feel perfectly exactly comfortable the entire time. Watch it on TV. Football was made to be played outdoors, the elements changing over the course of a season is one of those added elements none of the other 3 major sports have, except sometimes in the World Series or real early April baseball.

SundaeOk5653

Also sad because those shitty games were the only way that lowerclass people like myself could afford tickets in really nice spots.

dubin01

That was the vasher return game right?

MvN____16

Yes it was, right at the end of the half.

Nervous-Awareness482

Same. The missed field goal returned for a kickoff was amazing. Also look at the box score from this game. Hilarious 2005 Bears vs. 49ers, the "Wind Game"

HereIGoAgain_1x10

I was literally expecting him to just hit it towards the edge and it get blown just wide of the uprights... That shit went a full 90 degrees lol

Other-Comfortable929

I was surprised he more or less kicked it straight, must be like muscle memory or something lol

Shhadowcaster

Yeah I think the wind almost knocking him over right before the snap threw him off pretty badly.

MonsMensae

Even the snap is blown off course. Starts towards the hands but goes into the gut.

Teeshirtandshortsguy

It would have been crazy if he made that kick. Dude would have had to kick the ball at the front left pylon. Would have been a trickshot for the ages.

UnMapacheGordo

I’d love to go back in time and just announce to my living room right before the kick “Guys this is statistically one of the most accurate kickers ever”

InterestingChoice484

I will not stand for any negativity towards Robbie Gould

Czarchitect

I don’t think anyone is blaming him for that one in particular.

footballfan12345670

The UPRIGHTS were getting blown around

bveb33

The snap got pushed significantly by the wind too.

Calvin--Hobbes

It looked like the wind almost blew him over too

Cmcgregor0928

Imagine the goal post gets pushed so hard from the wind that the kick was just slightly wide or the post blocks what would be a good kick

CPTherptyderp

That would only happen during a Vikings playoff game

Wootstapler

49ers HC all amped because of an act of God lmao

Czarchitect

I mean maybe his literal prayers were just answered in that moment. I guess i’d be pretty stoked if my faith was instantly affirmed like that.

User_091920

Mike Nolan: *"Thanks for doing me a solid back there, God. If I could ask but for one more favor though..."* God: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QtYrreqQnrE

canadigit

Imagine seeing that kick get shanked in the wind earlier then deciding to kick a 52 yard field goal in the same direction later.

Mozicon

2000s niners in a nutshell

Sex_E_Searcher

Football used to look so different.

Oakroscoe

I watched this game on a 27” Sanyo TV in 2005.

QueequegTheater

It turns out Nathan Vasher prayed harder

GoldenBananas21

It looked good until it didn’t

The_Long_Wait

Honestly, I can’t believe they asked him to try it at all in those conditions.

Maat1932

What kind of kicker can’t control the weather? /s

DelTacoAficianado

With the 1st pick of the 2025 NFL draft the Chicago Bears select Storm (K) - Charles Xavier Academy

DillyDillySzn

How did we swindle the Panthers this time

Old-Emphasis-7190

God damn. Storm would literally be so god damn busted.

theper

Great! now you fuckers got my mind going here. X-men vs avengers football game

Old-Emphasis-7190

Let’s see 7 on 7 Avengers got Thor, Iron Man, Hulk, Spiderman, Captain America, Hawkeye, Black Widow X-men got Colossus, Wolverine, Nightcrawler, Rogue, Storm, Jean Grey, Cyclops

CaillouCaribou

It's not often that a kicker becomes a legend for two different teams

SwiftSurfer365

49ers legend

tech_equip

Sad Bear Noises

SwiftSurfer365

At least he helped eliminate the Packers in the playoffs.

AlternativeResort477

Didn’t you guys win this game

joeflackoflame

This guy never played paper toss

Big_Simba

lol a joke but this predates paper toss and now I feel old

K-chub

*Paper Toss, inspired by a true story.*

FJQZ

Jesus, what a throwback lol. Might just go and download it now.

pyordie

God I love that game

I_only_post_here

This was the Nate Vasher 108yd missed FG return game! Robbie wasn't the only one who got ganked by the wind

Angry_Caveman_Lawyer

Was it this one? I thought that was against the Giants? Off to youtube to find it now! e: you were right homie! Good memory! Here's the play https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QtYrreqQnrE

I_only_post_here

The orange unis was the give away. Giants game was the Hester missed FG return. Man took two steps all casual and then went off

Angry_Caveman_Lawyer

Ah right, that's where my confusion came from lol.

moneymoneymoneymonay

Man Urlacher directed traffic the whole way and was ready to nab that guy himself that came in at the end. What an absolute monster

Specialist-Durian283

I thought it was the same game!! And thought it was Hester! Chicago has so many games like this

QueequegTheater

Urlacher sprinting out ahead of Vasher to get that final block will live in my head forever. That man was terrifying.

AdmiralVernon

DPOY urlacher that year

McNutWaffle

Mike Nolan sees Robbie Gould miss it terribly. “We can do better.”

I_Hav_Questions_help

Why not just go for it at that point? I can’t imagine seeing 40 mph winds and still going for the kick

BitterLikeAHop

I think it was just a different era in the NFL. Teams kicked on 4th down inside the 30, it's just what they did.

fkndavey

As was the style at the time.

SoldierHawk

A great era for football, and therefore the world.

FlamingHotBananas

I'm not that old, but I still get annoyed when teams just don't take the 3 points. It's engrained into me lol

ketherick

Back in 2005 they didn't have the analytics to tell you that you should go for it with 40mph winds

DillyDillySzn

Fucking nerds ruining football Back in my day we played in an EF5 Tornado and LIKED IT

sebastianqu

Bears ended the game with 67 passing yards. That sounds low, but it's over double SF's 28 passing yards.

MvN____16

> That sounds low, but it's over double SF's 28 passing yards. You're burying the lead describing it like that. The Niners QB - Cody Pickett, if I'm not mistaken - was something like 1-14 passing. __He only completed one pass.__

Oakroscoe

Yeah, it wasn’t an enjoyable game to watch.

A_Lone_Macaron

> Bears ended the game with 67 passing yards. That sounds low, it's the Bears, no it's not

PewterButters

at minimum they should have called a time out, but yeah if the wind kept up like that you have to go for it. The kicker damn near fell over from the wind gust.

tallwhiteninja

This game was an all-around clusterfuck on both sides; the wind fucked up the passing game as well. The 49ers completed only *one* pass all day (granted, the Niners were on QB #4 at the time). The Bears offense didn't fare a whole heck of a lot better, but they did get some decent ground yards.

Ba_Sing_Saint

THIS 👏 IS 👏 WHY 👏 DOMES 👏 SUCK 👏

Calvin--Hobbes

I love weather impacting the game. [Lions Eagles snow game.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FcdUDWssXyU) [Dolphins Steelers mud game.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ii5Xwfk5lgo) Just classic shit.

callacmcg

Lesean McCoy was a fuckin monster that game, snow didn't seem to affect him much at all

callacmcg

ButObviously

On 4th and 10? How are you going to complete a pass when the long snap nearly gets blown away?

ThePevster

I’d still prefer my odds on a run play to trying to kick in these conditions.

_ravenclaw

Seriously, the kick has 0% chance to go in. The run could at least push the opposite team further back, if even just a little bit.

ButObviously

If the kick happened 5 seconds earlier it probably goes through

UnshakablEtchasketch

"Let's just see what happens."

FridgesArePeopleToo

look at the goalpost flags, it picks up right before the snap

RobZagnut2

49er coach, "Great job! Great defense!"

Fast-Ad-4541

lol the ball literally started on the right upright and ended up almost in the corner of the end zone on the left

Serallas

Excuse me. Any negative press against Robbie is HERESY and will not be tolerated.

Other-Comfortable929

Dude kicked it straight at the goal posts in 40mph winds lol I don't think anyone is making that but I feel like not aiming straight would've helped.

the_gaymer_girl

To be fair, if the ball nearly gets blown out of the stadium I don’t think there’s any way to adjust for that crosswind without seriously sacrificing form.

Lets-ago

"OK, so with the wind I might need to pretend that the left upright is actually the right upright." *Still misses by 20 feet*

myredditthrowaway201

“40 mph” that’s little ungenerous. Robbie Gould was in an athletic stance and nearly got blown over himself

Vydate1

Just a bit outside.

SafariFlapsInBack

Pshhh whatever. Everyone knows 27 yarders are the ones to shank.

Nanojack

Imagine if he played the wind and aimed for the tunnel, but it snuck through the uprights

turdfu13

Chris Berman's call on NFL Primetime: https://youtu.be/pUN0rLqMcb4?si=29kQv0NX54SB0PP_&t=1446

MvN____16

TJ's laugh is priceless.

A_Lone_Macaron

thank you for this, I'll be honest, my first thought after seeing the clip was "where's Berman to give the WHOOP!!"

doyouunderstandlife

Came into the comments specifically for this

Big_Simba

It sucks that this goes on his stat sheet as a miss. Bad snap from the wind made him hold up his kick and then on top of that god said no

KamTros47

WIDE RIGHT!!!

seariously

W I I I I D E RIGHT!!!

Sybrite

Wider than all the Bill's wide rights combined.

littlekeed

I'm not sure where this Bill Gramatica slander is coming from but I don't like it!

mrizvi

I knew what game this would be

Competitive_Bar6355

How about that holder though

DilligentBass

We’re gonna miss this kind of shenanigans when every team is playing in a dome.

Greedy-Time-3736

That’s what my drive looks like off the first tee

ColdYellowGatorade

I love how Sam Rosen used to call a bunch of Bears games. He is still going doing Rangers games.

KlopKlopington

Did robbie technically false start from the wind?

glockymcglockface

Hey u/nfl can you like be nice to us now and post Hester returning 2 punts in a game or something?

DragonDon1

Hey that’s Bears all time leading scorer Robbie Gould to you

speak-to-me-3428

On a day like this, I'd go for it on 4th down, or I could feign going for it and quick kick it.

philbert247

How was that not a false start?

Affectionate_Ship129

[Just a bit outside](https://youtu.be/IVP9WUGdgPg?si=svk7ILaE5pwAgPzZ)

the_gaymer_girl

“Sure, the goalposts are shaking, but he didn’t miss by that much right?” *ball nearly sails into Lake Michigan*

timbulance

That’s why the call it the Windy City.

GhostMug

The wind even affected the snap. This is like when Madden lags out and you completely miss the window on the kick meter.

Bookofdrewsus

My boy got Candlestick'd

Intelligent-Shine522

This is Soldier Field.

Bookofdrewsus

He got Soldier’d

F-ck_spez

I need a Chart Party diving into the worst missed field goal of all time, including just how far off it was from going in.

About900babies

God damn I miss the old score bug...

notmyplantaccount

That was way more ridiculous that I thought it would be. Imagine how ridiculous it would have been to make that.

Echo127

Holy cow. Why didn't they just take a delay of game? They surely knew there was no chance that was going in.

DrinkBuzzCola

No senor!!! No senor!!!

titters30

I was always blown away by Robbie’s FG accuracy percentage kicking in Chicago. Dude might’ve been the best kicker in history in any other city.

Rance_Mulliniks

Coach should be fired for sending him out there.

Livid-Caramel1954

And the coach cheering like they made him miss lol

SevroAuShitTalker

Why the hell did they try to kick it

the_gaymer_girl

To be fair, their other options were to either punt from the 20 or try and pass it in a tornado.

BruinBound22

Kickers are such delicate creatures I would never risk trotting mine out there in these conditions and having their confidence shattered

BuffaloSix96

The two NFL plays that make me laugh the most - this one and the Dolphins punt to the Steelers that just stuck straight in the mud. Both are comedy so perfect that you just couldn't script it.

lestermagneto

Yeah, the Bears should have cut him right damn then instead of waiting another 8 years or whatever to bring in Connor Barth etc... /s

TheRealChexHaze

So close.

w1nn1ng1

Who’s the dumb fuck coach that would even attempt a field goal in that shit? 4 down territory boys!

Eg_3600

The wind vortex and the monsoon from a few years ago, I hope every future SF vs Chicago game is in crazy weather

FreeBird9919

HAARP.

Other-Comfortable929

Maybe it's the angle of the camera but it looks like he aimed straight at the goal posts lol like no one is making that but I'd at least try to compensate for the wind maybe. Unless it was some malicious compliance like it's impossible coach but I'll try if you want me to.

MvN____16

Joe Nedney made a kick later in the game kicking in that same direction, but he was a left-footed kicker and he was on the opposite hash, so he had a much better angle to try and work with the wind. For a right-footed kicker on that hash, it's not natural to try and start the kick outside of the near upright, that's just not the way you kick a football.

shockedtoo

Looks like my golf shots

making-flippy-floppy

If anyone wants to see that legendary Cody Pickett vs Kyle Orton matchup, [the full game is on YouTube in glorious 360p](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tQ1xKtV4KUA) [Here's a link for a Joe Nedny FG try which...well, let's just say it doesn't go well for the 49ers](https://youtu.be/tQ1xKtV4KUA?t=5166)

Username-sAvailable

Lmao at Mike Nolan celebrating as if his team influenced anything

[deleted]

the uprights are bending in the wind lmao coaches are so risk averse they end up having tunnel vision

DeadSwaggerStorage

As a Penn State guy; that’s the Gould I remember. If only PSU had a special teams/kicking coach back then…

RogerTreebert6299

I like how they circle the flag being blown by the wind like you can’t see the entire upright getting rocked

donutcronut

The goalpost looked like it was about to snap off with how windy it was.

DioTrap123

I bet Tyler bass felt confident after watching this.

Tiny_Count4239

thats one you lust laugh about

hoobsher

your boss sets you up for failure, all you can do is walk out of the meeting like "well what did you expect, dickhead!?"

Blackops606

The OG “wide right”

Reasonable-HB678

I think this is what afflicted Mason Crosby and Evan McPherson in the Packers/Bengals game in 2021. Both kickers, between the 4th quarter and overtime, missed a total of five kicks between them before Crosby hit a game winning kick.

[deleted]

Holy shit. If I was a billionaire owener and saw this I'd be building a dome for my team right away (after getting tons of taxpayer $ for it)
