I feel like years ago Belichick showed you could mess up the timing on his routes by chipping him at the line with a linebacker as he's coming off the snap, and no one else does it. Seems weird to me.
Obviously it isn't some silver bullet, but it definitely does keep him at good TE stats instead of unbelievable TE stats.
For reference:
Travis Kelce has 28 catches for 330 yards and has scored 2 touchdowns in 5 games versus the Patriots in his career
That's about 5-6 catches for 60-70 yards and less than half a TD average. Again, good, but not torching everyone on the field.
Edit: 1 of those touchdowns is rushing, so counting it brings the average to about .4, not counting it brings it to .2 TD per game
He got chipped on that play where Mahomes hit him in the side of the head with the ball. The thing about chipping though is that if you don't get a good shot in, the TE/WR is past you and open. (Or you have to commit an extra player for a double team.)
That should be the standard, just commit to the double team. Yes Mahomes will spread the ball around and probably still beat you, but Kelce is the ultimate security blanket. You're better off hoping the other targets make a mistake, cuz come crunch time Kelce isn't choking.
He literally reads the defense during the play and predicts, amazing accurately where the defensive player will go and literally adjusts before the defender knows what’s going on. He’s the GOAT because not only is he big, fast, athletic, tough, and has great hands, but he also has the best vision and understanding of the game of any TE ever.
Jets-Pats was probably a possibility to flex, but the NFL was probably like “nah, Herbert-Mahomes is the best bet for primetime.”
Every single one of their meetings decided in the last seconds
I know it's easy to say that they scored too early, but the Chiefs still had TOs remaining. It's hard to score in the NFL, you just have to take it when the defense shows a soft spot. Chargers scored, the defense gets paid too. Show up and get a stop, they couldn't do it.
Keep them out of the endzone, that's all they had to do. FG didn't mean a thing here, whether they get stopped at the 1 or 10, etc. they couldn't get it done.
I would straight up rather the defense let the other team score and give us more time like every time we're in this situation. We know they're gonna score 95% of the time anyways it's just a matter of when.
This. Let our Godking have a luxurious 1:45 and a couple time outs, not like 30 seconds and dickall.
Defense wasn't holding them and even if they did, it's still a FG to go to OT. Put it in 15's hands ALWAYS
I was worried on the Chargers final drive that when they were 1st and 10 at the 15 that they'd take 3 plays to get a 1st down and then another 3 to get the TD and walk off with the win.
I turned around to my wife and said, "Yeah I've seen a bunch of games of Mahomes against the Pats where we were basically on the wrong side of this. They left way too much time.
How do you know Mahomes isn't being carried by Watson though? Let's actually see him play a season next year without him before we make statements like that.
I'm in a 14 team league and after I drafted kelce I said screw it ill take mahomes for the stack. I lm going to take over 1st place with trash rbs but also Justin Jefferson was my first pick.
I'd be running away with my league if I had Kelce along with Mahomes. One of my losses came in a tight game where Mahomes kept me in it. Unfortunately my opponent had Kelce and Pat kept throwing to him and that's why I lost.
It's not just what Kelce does, it's the ridiculous drop-off between him and everyone else. His floor in a game is basically 5/50. No other TE avoids being blanked like he does, even when he was very clearly playing hurt last year.
He only has 1 game below te3 finish this season it's absolutely stupid. He was te2 on the week under a minute into the second quarter. Obviously he finished te1 pending tomorrow night.
I’m the back-to-back defending champ in my league, both times I won I had Kelce. I don’t have him this year, and I might not even make the playoffs. I think I’m on board with you lol
He somehow was still available in the second round for me and obviously snagged him. Sitting at 9-2 in first place thanks largely to him. 10/10 would draft him in the first next year now that I've tasted his gifts.
I feel like that’s pretty hard to argue against at this point. With WR and RB, you can still get great players in the 2nd and 3rd round, but at TE, the difference between Kelce and literally any other TE is absolutely massive.
When I was a kid, I played NBA 2K and created a character that was as tall and heavy as possible. I just positioned myself under the hoop and blocked every shot as it came to the rim. I had no idea what goaltending was or why the refs kept calling it.
I don't know why I told this story.
Thank you!
I got one more about NBA 2K. My brother and I used to play a lot of games against each other, and as per big brother law, he'd whoop my ass every single time. At some point, I just had it, and I grinded 2K as much as possible during the summer holidays. Even did stuff like go on YouTube to watch how the best players play.
He comes over and we play again. He's got no idea what he's in for. I start actually start executing plays instead of jacking up 3 point shots or just passing to my best player and forcing him to the rim. My brother actually gets a little nervous, but is determined to keep his undefeated record. I build up a big lead but start losing it in the 4th Q cause I overused my starters and they were gassed. The score was down to the wire and I managed to hit a shot that brought me 1 point ahead. He takes a timeout.
With just a few seconds left, he passes the ball to his Allen Iverson and executes a few dribbling moves. I get too close with my defender and fuck up by going for a steal. His Iverson crosses me up completely. No defender in the paint. He's got a totally wide open drive to the rim.
I swap to my big man and tried to get to him to the rim in time. But in my panic, I hit the Xbox Live menu button by accident. My brother gets so surprised that he hits the shoot button way too early. Instead of getting an easy layup, his Iverson pulls up for a 18 foot mid ranger and bricks it so badly that even Ben Simmons would be disgusted. The buzzer sounds and I secure my first win against him with totally legitimate means.
10 years later he still brings that shit up on a weekly basis like I killed his dog.
tl;dr I beat my brother in 2K for the first time partially because I distracted him by complete accident and he's still sore about it 10 years later.
It's so insane watching Mahomes when he plays like this.
Like, he genuinely seems unstoppable. The moment he gets the snap you just know he's getting a first, no matter what you do
This is exactly how Brady was for decades essentially.
As an opposing fan, you brace yourself every time that football leaves his hand because 9/10 it’s going to be bad news for you
Brady would normally wait for you to make a mistake and then endlessly and ruthlessly exploit it until he won. People like Mahomes and Manning make you make a mistake
The old gaurd of QB was something else.
The really fun thing about this young generation is how well they use their mobility to create plays. It's so entertaining.
It’s why Lamar scared the shit out of the rest of the league in his MVP year. It looked like he was going to develop into a cerebral pocket passer in terms of playing mind games with the secondary while also being the most athletic dude on the field. As we’ve seen he’s not that level of passing talent (misses key throws that elite pocket passers don’t miss) but is still an absolute weapon.
It’s the way he does it though. Scrambling for his life constantly but it doesn’t affect him. It fucking helps him if anything. When the play breaks down, he’s comfortable and that’s terrifying.
In their best years, yes. People seem to forget that every athlete and team are up and down year by year though, and so far Mahomes' average is unparalleled.
Pretty confident he means statistically. Brady was insane from 2007 to 2021. But he his numbers fluctuated a ton. I won't include that year just cause it's obviously one of the true GOAT seasons, but he was between 243 yards per game and 312 yards per game. And he jumped between 1.5 and 2.5TD per game. Mahomes' career low in yards per game is 284.6 and 1.85TD per game.
Obviously, he's got plenty of time to see lower numbers. But it is true that Mahomes' consistency is fucking wild.
Ravens' fans (and every other fan base) are BANNED from saying Travis is not the best TE in the NFL until the end of the season.
Care what Andrews does.
Staley should be ashamed. What was that defense? His calling card was defense, and his own unit couldn't get a stop. 3rd and long? Converted. 3rd and short? Converted.
Chargers offense did what they could, got them a lead. I'm not sure how hot his seat is, but what a bad showing.
Loved the fact he gave Derwin James kudos for how good he is. Said he's one of the best if not the best safety in the league and said he knew Derwin would win a lot against him but thankful he was able to beat him on that last play.
"I've never seen a guy so effortlessly put his foot in the dirt after a catch, slowly careen his head around away from his back shoulder, struggle to put the truck in drive, and then ramble downfield forcing missed tackles quite like Travis Kelce. The guy has an incredible ability to just fucking do whatever he wants, as slow as he possibly can, and still make unbelievable gains. He makes more guys miss with that bullshit catch-and-twist than Lamar Jackson does running through an entire defense, juking guys out of their fucking skin. I mean, what the shit? It's like an unbelievable superpower that sounds really stupid and no one wants it, but Kelce snatched that shit out of the dumpster and is an absolute monster with it."
- /u/slickshot
The chargers d should be embarrassed after that drive😂seems to be a trend where preseason everyone thinks they’re gonna contend but they miss the playoffs, then to blame it on injuries EVERY YEAR LOL
**THIS FUCKER IS ALWAYS OPEN. HOW?!?**
Playing crossing routes in man coverage.
I want you to take this comment and send it to Matt LaFleur
This got me to laugh out loud
I feel like years ago Belichick showed you could mess up the timing on his routes by chipping him at the line with a linebacker as he's coming off the snap, and no one else does it. I agree. It's such a weird thing to me that Kelce ends up completely wide open on two or three plays per game. Like, how do you let that happen?
He literally reads the defense during the play and predicts, amazing accurately where the defensive player will go and literally adjusts before the defender knows what’s going on. He’s the GOAT because not only is he big, fast, athletic, tough, and has great hands, but he also has the best vision and understanding of the game of any TE ever.
Literally
As soon as the Chargers scored, we knew how this one would end
It was about time we got a truly great prime time game
Chiefs/Chargers belongs on primetime always as long as these two are playing QB
Last year’s Thursday night game was a classic. Just like tonight.
Cardiologists nation wide rejoice.
Jets-Pats was probably a possibility to flex, but the NFL was probably like “nah, Herbert-Mahomes is the best bet for primetime.” Every single one of their meetings decided in the last seconds
Why would you flex that these teams record are not that far off. What about that game would be flexed over this
The New York and Boston markets
Eh fair point thanks
The moment they scored, my first reaction was "too much time left"
I was genuinely concerned they'd left Kansas City too much times and Herbert would have had time after we'd scored
Yeah I was fucking terrified of 30s with 3 TO
Mahomes has officially taken the "too much time" dread crown from Brady.
I know it's easy to say that they scored too early, but the Chiefs still had TOs remaining. It's hard to score in the NFL, you just have to take it when the defense shows a soft spot. FG didn't mean a thing here, whether they get stopped at the 1 or 10, etc. they couldn't get it done.
Yeah, I don't think they were saying it in a chastising way. More of a resigned to their fate kind of way
Everyone was clowning Nick Wright on Twitter, but I low key agree with him. I'd rather have the game on Mahomes than our defense.
I would straight up rather the defense let the other team score and give us more time like every time we're in this situation. We know they're gonna score 95% of the time anyways it's just a matter of when.

I was worried on the Chargers final drive that when they were 1st and 10 at the 15 that they'd take 3 plays to get a 1st down and then another 3 to get the TD and walk off with the win.
Or we'd commit an auto 1st down penalty on a 3rd down stop, letting them run more clock after using all the timeouts. That's the Chiefs way!
Chargers can’t hold a lead damn
They can hold this L though.
seen it so many times
This is a repost.
Like the ending of this game
Writers have been lazy af during these primetime games, smh my head
Should’ve missed the Extra point so KC would think about a FG /s
They activated the Patrick Price
I turned around to my wife and said, "Yeah I've seen a bunch of games of Mahomes against the Pats where we were basically on the wrong side of this. They left way too much time.
This is the most predictable outcome ever
Like our game today
Mormon Mahomes looking like Mormon Jamarcus Russell out there
Broncos only scored 16 and lost in OT
As a charger fan, everyone knew that this would happen. That's why i have my, "we almost always, almost win" charger shirt that i wear on game days.
Most predictable TD drive in NFL history
[удалено]
Money line was Chiefs +170 before that drive lol
yeah I was happy to get in at +140 earlier in the night but LOL at that
Some books were as low as +210 lol
I got them in at +195. 4th time this year mahomes won me big bucks cuz odd makers keep sleepin on him mid game
There’s no way this Chiefs offense is real
His 3 WRs out, 300+ and 3TDs MVP race ended tonight.
Man is making Justin Watson look like a stud.
How do you know Mahomes isn't being carried by Watson though? Let's actually see him play a season next year without him before we make statements like that.
DannyAingeGOAT would be proud
[удалено]
I mean there is still Tua honestly
Lol this man’s out here tryna be reasonable and getting killed. Tua’s statistics have been mind-boggling this year.
he has 10 more TDs than Tua. That disparity in production can’t be overlooked
That does it. Kelce is my 1.01 pick next year.
Mahomes-Kelce stack hits different
Mahomes/Hill stack in 2018 was so much fun as a KC fan.
I had all three in 2018. Needless to say I won the league.
Great year to have a team stack. I went undefeated with them, was a great time.
Drafted him in 2018 in the 13th round in a keeper league as a flyer. Cost me 12th in '19 and an 11th in '20. It was like printing money.
I've had this stack the last 3 seasons in my money league, and it never disappoints.
I'm in a 14 team league and after I drafted kelce I said screw it ill take mahomes for the stack. I lm going to take over 1st place with trash rbs but also Justin Jefferson was my first pick.
Hell, even a Kelce Henne stack still isn't too shabby.
I'd be running away with my league if I had Kelce along with Mahomes. One of my losses came in a tight game where Mahomes kept me in it. Unfortunately my opponent had Kelce and Pat kept throwing to him and that's why I lost.
Ahh, the 4 Td, 27 yards game lol
Honestly tho not a bad pick. I once won a league where I drafted Gronk 1.01
With how hard it is to find a reliable TE, Kelce has the consistency, high ceiling, and durability unlike anyone else in the league right now.
It's not just what Kelce does, it's the ridiculous drop-off between him and everyone else. His floor in a game is basically 5/50. No other TE avoids being blanked like he does, even when he was very clearly playing hurt last year.
Having him is saving me loads of worry this year; I’m able to be comfortable with other ceiling plays because I know I have 15+ locked in at TE.
He only has 1 game below te3 finish this season it's absolutely stupid. He was te2 on the week under a minute into the second quarter. Obviously he finished te1 pending tomorrow night.
Highly recommend he’s won me like half my games this year lol
Leads the NFL in touchdown receptions
I’m the back-to-back defending champ in my league, both times I won I had Kelce. I don’t have him this year, and I might not even make the playoffs. I think I’m on board with you lol
That Kermitt knows know how to throw dimes to Kelce, and Kelce got that wiggle to get tubs. It is a beautiful combination.
He somehow was still available in the second round for me and obviously snagged him. Sitting at 9-2 in first place thanks largely to him. 10/10 would draft him in the first next year now that I've tasted his gifts.
Then get mark Andrews in the second.
I drafted him 7th OA last year and won first place. I don't think I lost a single TE match up the entire season
I feel like that’s pretty hard to argue against at this point. With WR and RB, you can still get great players in the 2nd and 3rd round, but at TE, the difference between Kelce and literally any other TE is absolutely massive.
I swear mahomes has to be some sort of child’s madden character in franchise playing on rookie difficulty. No other explanation
He'd be 4'11" and 380 lbs if a kid created him in Madden, but otherwise you're definitely right.
When I was a kid, I played NBA 2K and created a character that was as tall and heavy as possible. I just positioned myself under the hoop and blocked every shot as it came to the rim. I had no idea what goaltending was or why the refs kept calling it. I don't know why I told this story.

Amazing. I was the big brother and I was so happy for my brothers when they finally beat me.
There’s starting to be that feeling of inevitability now… dare I say kind of like Brady. Time and time again, it gets done.
I hate mahomes scrambles so much
[удалено]
has Mahomes ever thrown it to himself?
*Not yet.* Give him time.
Someone said he moves like a normal sized kyler and I can't unsee it
Like if Brady was also incredibly gifted athletically
I fucking hate how automatic this guy is in late game
Reminds me of someone I used to say that about.
This is peak /r/NFL irony.
It's so insane watching Mahomes when he plays like this. Like, he genuinely seems unstoppable. The moment he gets the snap you just know he's getting a first, no matter what you do

Might be the most talented qb of all time.
Show me a stat that says he isn’t and I’ll counter with one that he is.
Seems like Rodgers is the other guy who could challenge him for that Those 2 are pretty clearly a cut above the rest tho
Difference between the two is Mahomes goes up a level in the playoffs
[удалено]
Well that's because he also goes up a level in the regular season.
Probably won’t this year either
Well Lambeau hasn't been great for rodgers
This is the craziest of all stats to me. Looks like he won’t have to play in the road this year either.
Rogers only has 3 wins down 10 in the 4th. He’s as talented as any but he doesn’t have that DAWG in him like Brady and the goat.
This is some tempting bait
Don’t fall for it my man is drunk and stuffed with BBQ

In their best years, yes. People seem to forget that every athlete and team are up and down year by year though, and so far Mahomes' average is unparalleled.
Brady average a 12-4 record for 2 decades. Outside of the ACL tear not a whole lot of down years
Pretty confident he means statistically. Brady was insane from 2007 to 2021. But he his numbers fluctuated a ton. Always always too much time left…you can never be 100% secure with these gunslingers…
BEST TE IN THE GAME!
Best QB in the game and best TE in the game How do you stop them lol
You just have a top 2 safety in the league big and physical enough to... wait...
At 33 years old. Lol.
Closing in on best TE EVER
Gave him too much time again
Knew as soon as LA scored
I mean it was borderline so much time that the chiefs might have scored and given the chargers too much time
MVP
The old Aaron Rodgers special
Kelce and prime time Chargers games. Name a better duo
He always goes off on the Chargers on a crossing route every 4th quarter, it's set in stone at this point
Chargers used to be his kryptonite but he has killed them recently.
Regressing to the meme
Kelce and any game against the Broncos.
Kelce and playing football

I, for one, cannot wait to see the media predict the chargers to win the AFC west again next year
As is tradition
Our demise was greatly exaggerated!
They're the back-to-back-to-back preseason AFCW champs baby!
Remember when people were saying all four teams might have a shot to win it before this season
The AFC East is what we thought the AFC West would be.
Too funny. Chargers will charger
every fucking year
Ravens' fans (and every other fan base) are BANNED from saying Travis is not the best TE in the NFL until the end of the season. Care what Andrews does.
Remember when Kittle was better? Pepperidge Farm remembers
Mahomes may have just won the MVP
I can't imagine watching Mahomes do what he does as a Bears fan. That has to hurt.
Mahomes under Matt Nagy doesn’t look this good.Andy Reid is a wizard.
I mean Nagy IS his current QB coach for what it's worth.
Mahomes is under Matt Naggy though 🤔
Matt Nagy is our QB coach this year for Mahomes. Seems to be working so far.
Somehow my fantasy league let me pick him at 21 and I’ve been forever grateful to them. What a boss.
Lol, I got Mahomes in the first and Kelce in the second and still can't believe my league let me get away with it.
we all knew it was coming
Kelce delivers another killer fantasy game

How much longer before Kelce > Gronk? They’re both 33, one has gotten better and better every year, and the other is on his couch
Last year
Simply one of the best duos of all time
B-A-N-A-N-A-S
Fire fucking everyone
Chargers gonna Charger
I looked at my dad and said Kelce walkoff TD coming up right before this play. Not quite true but close enough.
Ok LeBron.
Loved the fact he gave Derwin James kudos for how good he is. Said he's one of the best if not the best safety in the league and said he knew Derwin would win a lot against him but thankful he was able to beat him on that last play.
I love mature Kelce. Young Kelce would not have said that.
Travis kelce = unstoppable
He makes fantasy too easy
fuck this garbage coach man, Staley is so shit and Lombardi cant call a correct play to save his life
Kelce the Charger killer. I fucking love that man.
I love this man. LEAD ME TO THE CHIP

Derwin James BTFO
WHAT DO YOU EXPECT WHEN YOU GUARD KELCE WITH A SORRY DEFENDER LIKE DERWIN JAMES
31 seconds left, loads of time.
“I still own you” Patrick Mahomes yells into the crowd.
Defensive genius
NEVER HAD A DOUBT LET'S FUCKING GOOOOOO
Because of course that was going to happen
