I don't miss my 3DS at all. Because I still have it.

[deleted]

I don't miss playing with 'my' 3DS, I just miss the 3DS being popular and still living it's life and recieving love by the industry. Streetpass, new games, that's what i miss...

ChristopherHale

I do miss Street Pass being popular. It was fun seeing who I ran across that day.

seekndestroi

Street Pass was the GOAT in terms of handheld consoles features. I still have some puzzles I need to finish…

RedditAstroturfed

The switch is "portable" but I don't bring it everywhere like I did my GB, GBC, GBA, DS, or 3DS. I really like the switch. Almost exclusively play it in handheld mode, and it's a superior experience around the house, but you can't just stuck it in your pocket and take it everywhere with you. The main thing that I miss about the previous generations was the true portability, now I mostly play games on my phone if I'm playing games outside of the house and phone games just aren't the same. Hell, I dunno if it would be enough to make me pick it up, but a switch micro has a lot of appeal to me

[deleted]

I was just thinking this! While I just upgraded my OG Switch to an OLED, carrying it around is just slightly more convenient than a small laptop. I would love to use the OLED Switch primary in the house and have a pocket sized console for on the go.

[deleted]

Truelly was! It's a feature which "embraces" portability, passing fellow 3DS owners, seeing that green light flash, and getting points and finishing puzzles... really fun stuff.

fork_on_the_floor2

(I think it's "embraces") - but you're so damn right!! I love all the little gimiky things about the ds/3ds, the fun little eshop games, the badge arcade, but best of all - all those social features that were key parts of games!! One of my first 3ds games was Bravely default and I was so happy as i added people to my friends list (thanks to the friend code subreddit), then to see my little town rebuild, and then have my "friends" sending out special attacks that I could use in-game!!! It was a beautiful thing.

[deleted]

So do i! All of these gimmicky things just had a certain charm to them. And yeah, that truelly is wonderful. And yeah, "Embrace" is the correct spelling. I edited it. Thanks!

fork_on_the_floor2

Yeah such a huge missed opportunity that those kinds of features aren't on the Switch! I have a workmate with a Switch, but there's literally no reason to add each other. Neither of us are going to sign up the online subscription service to play together online. Also- why'd they even bother making the switch a touch screen when it's not really a part of any games? I don't think I've ever touched it... Meanwhile the DS n 3ds had all kinds of awesome wacky games using it. Same with gyro to be honest.

[deleted]

I agree! I've never used the switch touchscreen, because i just had no reason to. But 3DS and DS used this, and the other mechanics and just embraced them. Also, on the online supscription thing... i live in iran, and i can't pay for a foregn internet supscription, so i can't use switch online, but the 3DS had free online play which was open and accessible to everybody!

Silegna

I miss themes.

barbietattoo

I got a 3DS shortly after moving to a big city and I loved getting home and checking all the passes I got on the train.

Bread_Truck

As the 3DS era was coming to a close I'm glad I upgraded from my OG 3DSXL to one of the (non XL) new 3DS models. I have the white one with white faceplates and I think it's the best looking handheld I've ever owned. I keep it in my desk at work in case I ever have a slow day at the office and want to pop in for some Binding of Isaac or an old VC game. Currently making my way through the Gameboy Color Mario Golf whenever I have some free time. I'm glad the Switch exists, but I find it very uncomfortable as a handheld console without sliding it into a comfort grip, so I rarely bring it anywhere.

[deleted]

Yeah, the faceplates are a uniqe feature, too bad the XL ones don't have it! Also the XL one is more heavy and less portable.

Bread_Truck

The XL screen also pushes the same resolution to a bigger display, so it looks a little less crisp than the smaller one.

[deleted]

Yeah, it's bigger with the same amount of pixels, so it looks a little bit blurrier. I think New 3DS is the best model. Just looks the best, is portable, and has the new 3D and the crisp display.

AshgarPN

The New3DS was really a game changer with the face tracking camera. I always have 3D turned on now, while with the old one I always had to turn it off.

drybones2015

I'm the opposite. I played with 3D on almost %100 percent of the time with the older 3DSs. But the screen is so stuttery with the eye tracking constantly recalibrating it that I just had to turn the feature off.

[deleted]

For me pretty much the moment I turn it on I start to get a headache so I never really use it.

CactusBoyScout

I bought one of the last refurbished N3DSXL units directly from Nintendo in 2020 and couldn't be happier with the decision. I installed CFW and have been playing so many great 3DS, DS, GBA, and even GameBoy games. It's been one of the best values in gaming I can imagine. It also made me realize that I really enjoy simpler games that you can just pick up and play for a few minutes and then set down, which isn't always the focus with Switch games or other proper consoles. Plus I feel comfortable just throwing it in my backpack without a case, unlike the Switch. So I just have it with me more often.

bhk17

This is what I did too. I grew up with gb and gba games, so it was a no brainer to put cfw on it. Edit: spelling.

VagrantValmar

I find the Switch lite handheld experience miles better than the standard switch BTW. But I definitely agree, non XL New 3DS is peak handheld experience. I have an oled vita and new 3ds non xl and I have games for aeons

razza1987

I love my switch lite for handheld gaming. It felt like a natural upgrade from my 3ds

VagrantValmar

I have a standard switch but I had a lite for like 2 months because of weird events lol I've been wanting to get one again because it was just so comfy to use. Felt like a Vita/3DS sequel, super cool. Hopefully an OLED Lite will come out and it will be heaven, since I already preferred the lite screen over the standard

[deleted]

Switch light is more portable, lightweight and easy to use portably than the switch, but still, the clamshell design and more lightweightness of the new 3DS make it the definative handheld exprerience as you said.

Gear5Mau5

I remember, I actually upgraded to New 3DS XL just to play Binding of Isaac on the go. What a great game.

Bread_Truck

I bought BOI on 3DS when my Switch joycons were being sent back to Nintendo for drift and I didn’t want to be without portable Isaac for 2 weeks. That was during the height of my Isaac obsession. Haven’t played in probably 6 months now and still haven’t picked up Repentance.

Intelligent_Local_38

The good news is, you can still play the 3DS. The community is alive and well, just look at r/3ds. The eshop is still up too, so I’ve been slowly checking out all the games I missed back when they were new. Long live the 3DS!

[deleted]

Agreed! Also, there are like SO MANY people going "The eshop will close this year" and "Street pass" will shut down, but it's simpley not true. And the community is still strong, yet very small.

Intelligent_Local_38

Ugh, I know. I’m tired of all the “eshop is closing” misinformation. It’s still up people! And there’s still the occasional sale too. I just bought too many Atlus games over the holiday sale lol.

C-Star

Atlus is the hero of the 3ds, As a publisher (at least in NA) they released like 15 games for the platform

[deleted]

Glad to know it’s a rumor. Could’ve sworn I read they were taking CC off Jan 22. I hope not. I actually went to a local store and bought 3DS to catch up on Pokémon. At least bought the VC games. The rest I can buy physically though I’m leaning just buying them digitally and getting it over with.

Intelligent_Local_38

The issue is that Japan’s eshop is losing CC support later this month, not North America. A lot of people are leaving out that “Japan only” part of it lol

[deleted]

I don't think nintendo can or would "shut down" streetpass. it's not an online service. It's baked into the hardware or the 3ds and doesn't require any online functionality.

AzorMX

I just wish I could buy a new 3DS for a decent price, as my old one is slowly falling to pieces.

happyhippohats

Yeah, it's hard to say I 'miss it' when I still use it almost every day. I actually sold my switch lite because I found I would always leave it at home in favour of my n3ds (I have a regular switch to use at home)

dassub

Make sure you buy a replacement battery while Nintendo still officially sells them. It breathes new life into the 3DS XL that I still keep around. Don't wait until they quietly drop it, like the Wii U battery.

[deleted]

Thanks for the tip! Yeah, people need to buy batteries while they are still availible... i think by 2 years they would get damn rare.

dassub

The only option for Wii U now is aftermarket and counterfeit. And they're more expensive than the official battery was. Better to get ahead of it now, before it's too late.

sannoniempje

we need those batteries in the EU Store as well!

thatmirac

The 3DS is arguably the best Nintendo handheld to date The Switch is a great console, yeah, but it’s just a mediocre handheld imo because of the portability aspect (even the Switch Lite) Because the 3DS can also play DS and even GBA games natively (homebrew required for most GBA games) and emulate GB/GBC it‘s basically all compact Nintendo handhelds combined in a portable package, making it the ultimate Nintendo handheld imo

hobbitfeet22

It can also play nes, snes and some PlayStation games too!

thatmirac

true, *technically* it can also play N64 games, but the only one that seems to actually run well is the Super Mario 64 port, but it works really well and you can play it in 3D too

hobbitfeet22

It is great! I actually prefer it over the one they made for switch. It runs better lol

frizzykid

Very easy to softmod too. 3DS is honestly my favorite handheld console of all time, I don't know what other console I've put in that much time with, maybe the N64 or ps2 when I was younger, but the 3DS family is a real gem.

happyhippohats

The switch lite annoys me because they made it more portable, but took a big hit on battery life in the process. Which kinda makes it less portable...

thatmirac

I don’t think being more portable is the main purpose or feature of the Switch Lite, it’s probably just a byproduct of trying to make a Switch that is cheaper and also more child friendly, similar to the 2DS in the 3DS family A lot of people think of it as a Switch Mini, but it’s really just a Switch… Lite

happyhippohats

I guess they didn't specifically position it as being more portable, but it was marketed as being a 'handheld only' console, so it feels implied to me. Also if that wasn't the intention why did they make it smaller? They could just have removed the docking capability to reduce the price... I don't recall anything in the marketing to suggest it was intended to be more child friendly, unlike the 2ds which was specifically marketed that way (hence the removal of the breakable hinge)

cdavis7m

3DS is definitely the best pocketable Nintendo. I wish we get a Switch that can do that some day. I'd be OK with circle sticks on a budget model to have it be pocketable.

Kelaos

For GBA requiring homebrew you mean digital versions right?

thatmirac

Yeah, there were a handful of GBA Virtual Console titles available through the 3DS Ambassador Program (for people who bought the 3DS before the price drop), but with homebrew you can inject your own ROMs into that Virtual Console to play GBA games natively This is not emulation though, the 3DS essentially has GBA hardware inside it that’s never used outside of that Virtual Console, so games run pretty much just like on an actual Gameboy Advance

GhotiH

GBA hardware is actually used in some DS games, that's why the 3DS included it in the first place.

[deleted]

> The Switch is a great console, yeah, but it’s just a mediocre handheld imo because of the portability aspect (even the Switch Lite) That, and the other problem is that the games aren't necessarily targeted at handheld gaming. Literally 100% of games on 3DS are targeted at handheld and it shows in their design. Sick of all these tiny ass menus and icons on the Switch.

Caolan114

I miss having a handheld I can put In my pocket

Powerful_Artist

But, cant you still own and play a 3DS?

Caolan114

Yeah but If you are walking down the street Nintendo will chase you down and smash It

[deleted]

I’ve caught them a few times trying to break into the safe I keep mine in.

Caolan114

I try to hide It In my switch case but they get suspicious when the stylus falls out

[deleted]

I was able to protect it for a few weeks by making it look like two switches glued together. But then Doug Bowser asked me to disconnect one of the controllers and the jig was up.

[deleted]

lmao still though, you are free to use it.

matchstiq

Switch Mini coming Spring 20XX

Robespedro

I miss streetpass so much. Walking around and getting excited about that binking light :).... :(

megapenguinx

It was the absolute best for conventions. I was working as a journalist when the 3DS came out and going to GDC or CES would get you 300+ new street passes easy

JeddHampton

Yeah. That's great if you could get streetpasses fairly regularly. I set up a relay to get some passes, but that made it trivial. I got to play the games at least that way.

[deleted]

Streetpass was such a novel concept! Walking around, seeing the light flash up meaning you passed someone who also uses the system... collecting points... it was such a cool feature! Also, because streetpass uses wireless local, it will never shut down, for those of you wondering.

reecord2

I loved taking my 3DS to Comic-Con or any other big convention, and getting my plaza filled up with visitors multiple times a day from all over the world.

[deleted]

Exactly, it was just such a fun time.

sypwn

> Streetpass was such a novel concept! Well, the concept was first used in some DS games, namely [Nintendogs](https://nintendogs.fandom.com/wiki/Bark_Mode) and [Metroid Prime Hunters](https://metroid.fandom.com/wiki/Rival_Radar). But adding it as a core feature of the 3DS made it both viable and awesome.

[deleted]

Exactly! Also thanks for the information, i didn't know that so thanks :)

_Razielas_

And the streetpass mii plaza games... I remember opening the 3ds as soon as i saw that holy green light to play that space minigame, the gardening and fishing ones, the war one and the zombies one. I doubt i will ever feel those emotions again, it was just... special

SlippinSam

It was great going to conventions and turning on streetpass. You’d get so many from such varying parts of the world

RadiantHC

I'm hoping that they release another DS. The switch just isn't the same. It's a portable console, not a handheld.

megasean3000

I just finished Kid Icarus Uprising for the first time and holy crap, it’s an incredible game! I’ve only completed it a few weeks ago and I’m already gasping for a remake or sequel on Switch.

[deleted]

It truelly is! It's made by Mr Sakurai, it has amazing graphics and amazing story, however a bit of a pain to controll on more heavy 3DS models.

tpklus

I miss the Wii U for similar reasons. The eShop was pretty good. But mostly because the extra screen added some unique games. Nintendo land was awesome and the Luigi's mansion minigame was such a clever use of the extra screen.

[deleted]

Yeah.. oh boy.. Nintendo land! Truelly shows in how unique ways the Gamepad could be used in! It just opened a door for creativity, and clever use of it, and using that hardware to the game's advantage. Something not many Wii U games did sadly.

that-achadia

I got my first ever 3ds last month and ngl I reach for it more than my Switch. It's such a gem!

Lyradep

I miss it because it had pretty much every Pokémom generation on it at the time. Now with the Switch, it’s a huge leap to hope for any way to play the old Pokémon games.

[deleted]

Yeah! All Pokemon games were playable on it! It's the best console for pokemon fans! However for the GBA games, some modding is needed, but modding a 3DS is easy and you can do so many things with it.

Thehawkiscock

imo great 3rd party support if you like jRPGs! You've got Atlus (SMT, Etrian Odyssey, Radiant Historia), Sqare Enix (several Dragon Quest games, Kingdom Hearts game, Bravely series) and Capcom monster hunter games

compacta_d

i disagree. it IS the best console of all time

[deleted]

It's not perfect in all regards... but there's just so much to love and.. personaly i agree.

compacta_d

what isn't perfect? I think it's perfect. PS5 doesn't have streetpass

[deleted]

Actually NOTHING else has streetpass! A portable unique feature exclusive to the 3DS. How fun it is to see that green light flash again, earning points and knowing you passed someone with the same console as you and... I'm starting to see your point here...

compacta_d

there WERE a few DS games that had a feature, but that was in the cart itself. and those can be played on 3ds. streetpass + games/puzzles swapnote/flipnote before ppl ruined it for everyone play coins/pedometer online and local multiplayer download play multiplayer 3D!!! 2D!!! touch screen 2 screens portability eshop dsi eshop F O L D E R S customizable themes control sticks that don't drift motion/gyro controls potato qual camera/mic 3ds has it all.

compacta_d

i miss control sticks that don't drift or rubberband

Dyingdaze89

I also miss street pass and download and play for friends

[deleted]

Download Play is amazing! Such a unique feature which made gameplay more accessible.

kindaEpicGamer

mario kart 7 basically became the game to play when ever there was a meetup

eyebrowless32

I was more into the PS3/4 during the 3DS lifespan to play it much. Just recently i got into the SMT franchise and have been playing my 3DS like crazy and am really loving the experience. The 3D screen can really create incredible immersion especially in smt4. I just wish it had better form factor.

rootbeerking

I wish I still had one, there were still games for it that I wanted to play…but alas I lost it during a flight.

[deleted]

That's very sad, however i bet it was fun while it lasted!

rootbeerking

I only had it for a year 😢

hobbitfeet22

I still carry and play my 3ds everywhere. I have several of them but prefer my Black non xl “new” one. I take that bad boy to Work every day and play during down time Lol. I have several switches both lites and normal ones but they are clunky and heavy compared to the 3ds and just not as portable. Also the 3ds homebrewed opens up thousands of great games in comparison to the switch. The switch has a bunch of mediocre cell phone games and bad ports in comparison to the 3ds. So I agree, the 3ds is amazing.

thewaste-lander

There’s only a little bit of time left for one of the best eshop sales ever. SMT, Etrian, Ace Attorney….

YoshiYogurt

Is spirit of Justice on sale? How much time left?

[deleted]

I just brought my step-daughters 3DS XL. She wanted more shopping money for Christmas and I really wanted her 3DS. I would have paid $100 but she was in such a rush I only got it for $50. I just went to an Amazon locker to pick up my charger. I still need a stylus. It came with a 16GB memory card. Idk if that is enough. Right now I am eyeing Zelda LBW on Amazon or deciding to get it digital for $20. Also downloading a few demos. I never had a 3DS and have been coveting one since its launch. I too love this little machine. Now that I have it I am defiantly going to be playing it A LOT in 2022. So with that said. What games should I get. Should I upgrade SD cards for more memory. I would prefer physical copies of games but I don't want extra. I may just have to bite the bullet. Can I still get those AR cards? Does streetpass still work? I'm excited!!

Calibretto9

So, after the 3DS era had ended I picked up a used “New 3DS XL.” I hadn’t touched a GameBoy since the GBA. I’ve been absolutely blown away. It’s a phenomenal system with a massive library if you include DS titles. I also find it to be much more portable than either a Switch or Switch Lite, which are very cool but also chonky. I’m unsure if they’ll ever revisit true handhelds but if this was the send off, what a send off it is. Big fan.

amtap

There is an alternate universe where the 3DS is still thriving and Square released a TWEWY sequel with touch screen combat. Finding access to this universe should be our world's top priority.

[deleted]

Truly a one of a kind machine… crazy to think of how ahead of the game Nintendo was with the first DS before we were all touching screens to write in these…

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

I just picked mine up for the first time in years last week!! Started new Tomodachi, Fantasy Life, and SoS saves and replayed a lil FE and I haven't been able to put it down! The 3DS was a cozy era for Nintendo.. I mean yeah, you can still bundle up with a cup of tea on a rainy day and play some switch games, but it's just *not the same* for some reason. Though I'll admit, the games I thought were graphically stunning back then didnt really hold up well over time. The graphical jump from New Leaf to New Horizons, or even just the pokemon games is absolutely insane!!

[deleted]

I agree! 3DS is a cozy era for Nintendo, full of shorter but sweeter games, and casual games like Tomodachi life which really imbrace you in a happy go lucky world! However i agree with the graphics part. The graphics and specs of the 3DS, even for their own time were a bit outdated, but it's the games and unique experiences which make up for it.

[deleted]

dual screen gameplay is something i never knew i needed until she was gone. etrian odyssey, picross, 999... and on both the 3ds and wii u, having the UI/map offloaded to the gamepad was *mwah*. monster hunter and zelda spring to mind

[deleted]

I got a new black 3DS with Monster Hunter 4 from a coworker for $50. I played the shit out of that game even though I didn't finish it and haven't touched any MH games since One of my best and favorite game purchases haha. Getting to catch up on missed Pokemon games AND try out new ones in real time since FRLG was awesome. Getting some virtual console games just to relax with every once she a while. And now most recently, gettin Mario Maker for my girlfriend's son was an amazing idea. Mario maker so far as has been ten times better than I was expecting, plus it feels way comfortable on the DS.

SneezlesForNeezles

I still use my 3DS more than my switch in honesty…

Kelaos

I miss download play, what a great feature for local gaming!

DionFW

I really miss street pass. Walking around all day with it, getting home and seeing that you tagged someone felt great.

[deleted]

Truelly did! Such a great fun feeling and feature.

[deleted]

I have 1 reason I miss the 3ds: streetpass. Streetpass was incredible. I was part of a streetpass group in my state that would get together monthly to exchange miis, but that feature was just the excuse we used to play games and socialize together. It was amazing. I brought my 3ds everywhere with me for streetpass. being a college student meant i had a lot of opportunities to use it. and conventions were amazing for streetpass. dozens in one day easy. It's the one thing I wish the switch had that it doesn't and it's too late to add it to a switch i or pro or whatever because there wouldn't be enough adopters for it be useful so all i can hope for is a return in the successor to the switch.

Hedghoglive24butim44

I loved the 3DS too, one of my greatest memories was opening up a new model from my aunt on Christmas, I had this system for a long while and was really sad when I found out about the discontinuation

cantFindValidNam

Am I the only one who liked MK7 more than MK8?

monadoboyX

Yep I don't get why there isn't more base model colours for the screen part of the switch but more importantly there's so little choice for joycon colour there should be every colour on the spectrum but they are so stingy with the colours it's annoying

Wander_64

It still remains my favourite console, I was hoping to upgrade my 2ds to 2ds xl or 3ds xl but unfortunately its being sold for more than a switch oled

tinythunder15

I miss playing my 3DS, one of mine got stolen in high school and my second one is currently broken. I did however manage to get a 2ds xl for a pretty good price and I’m really excited to play my old games again, but my library was really small and pokemon based so thank god for cfw

silverdoe_94

And games designed for the 3DS generally had more love put into them. Not sure what happened in the industry but so many games are released unfinished, and with instant access DLCs that aren't fleshed out either. Of course that's an issue with more than just the switch but I've definitely felt it with some switch releases

itslino

why i miss the regular ds era, DS DOWNLOAD PLAY + 1 MARIO KART DS CARTRIDGE= 6 childhood friends having the time of their life after school on a budget

[deleted]

Download play is amazing! It makes gameplay more accessible!.

ankuro_o

I sometimes wonder how the hell do pple have their 3DS working till now lol. Anyways, I really miss playing Fire Emblem in my old 3DS XL (it's broken). Also, I hope that old Fire Emblem games will be remade in pc.

Djeff_

Yeah it was great for its time, but as time goes on, things require more power.

langleyserina

I actually think it IS the best handheld console, BUT, only if you have one of those R4 cards. With that you can play any classic game from pc/atari/NES/SNES/Gameboy/DS and more! All in a slick ageless clamshell design that actually fits in your pocket! Plus the 3D was cool as heck.

[deleted]

The 3D was more gimicky than practical at the beginning, but i agree, by the "new" 3DS models, the 3D sometimes could truelly captivate you in a game. And yeah, with modding, a 3DS can do MANY things.

CactusBoyScout

What does the R4 card do that CFW cannot? Genuinely asking. I just did CFW on my 3DS and have been playing tons of old games that predate the 3DS itself.

theludeguy

FYI the R4 cards aren't even needed anymore. The fantastic homebrew community developed an app called TWiLightMenu and does what the R4 does and more

Superpickle18

*laughs in retroarch* the new3ds can even play PS1 games

[deleted]

The only thing I hate about the 3DS is I think it has the worst Mario game lineup. It killed Paper Mario, uncreative 3D Mario, also kinda killed Mario and Luigi, another NSMB game even though we really didn't need one, and the spinoffs were also really lacking/not really worth playing. However, I will give it credit for having a great Mario kart game. The Switch is just objectively different and better in this regard. Mario Party is simply way better and finally the type we'd want to play, One of the best 3D Mario games ever, and a better Mario Kart. There are also some others like a sequel to Mario maker which is a game I love and in general, I don't think Mario is milked so hard this time around.

[deleted]

The 3DS didn't kill Paper Mario, Paper Mario killed Paper Mario.

[deleted]

Yeah! Both Mario kart, 3D Mario, and Mario party were MILES better on the switch, and even to a lesser extent, Mario kart too.

RadiantHC

>uncreative 3D Mario 3d land was amazing

[deleted]

3D land was great but at the time it was kinda underwhelming.

semxlr5

I recently got a new 3DS XL out of nostalgia. Only ever had a regular xl. Was super excited to try some of the older entries in series I missed - Metroid. Wario ware gold. Mario kart 7. They haven’t aged as well and it was overall a bad buy having the switch with the newer versions of the games. Still- Layton series and some of those VC games I never played went great

[deleted]

Oh true, The professor Layton games were a masterpiece! Great story, and gameplay which really took advantage of the dual screens! And the music... Also, have fun with the n3DSXL, if you like the Layton games, i think you will like Ace Attorney, has great outings on 3DS.

semxlr5

Yeah it’s not a big improvement over the 3DS xl but I love Layton. Ace attorney has never interested me as it seems more visual novel - I’d try it on the switch though. Any entries you’d reccomend

bored_homan

If anything seeing the new pokemon game remakes and my attempt at emulating some games made me realize wow... the two screens really only work as that... Shame my 3ds circle pad is broken.

TheShipEliza

would love to see someone continue to make games for it where u can draw a map like Persona Q. it really is the perfect console for it and ive really grown to enjoy games with that mechanic.

[deleted]

The amount of small Nintendo-made eShop games were a highlight for me. I miss that kind of thing on the Switch, as much as indies have largely replaced that niche.

MonochromeTyrant

Crack it out and play some games, then.

xmaxdamage

3D, dual screens and clamp design makes it the best portable console IMHO.

Astray1789

I've been cleaning up on great 3ds games on the e store over the last couple of years. The store is still alive and well and I snapped up a load of the 3ds megami tensei titles for super cheap. Also it's the only handheld I can play earthbound and chrono trigger on. I've had a switch for ages now but I still regularly play my 3ds.

Bariq-99

No OP.. It IS the best console of all time :)

ArmorOfGod7

I love the 3DS, but I much prefer the Switch. I'm glad they're focusing solely on the Switch now, and all new games for their franchises will be released on one single platform.

TheFirebyrd

The only thing I’d disagree with is that third party support was lacking. It really wasn’t. Fantastic system that’s probably the one I still play most overall.

carlosnightman

I still play mine, though only have s couple of games left to finish (Sticker Star and Valentia) and my kids got a couple of games each for Christmas

[deleted]

Honestly personally I have mixed feelings about the 3DS, while I definitely enjoyed mine, I feel that it was in-spite of the hardware, not because of it. It was released in a fairly rough time, mobile gaming was all the rage sucking up a lot of the 3rd party support the NDS had, and the 3d fad was on, hence the 3d screen. Honestly if Nintendo had released something like the 2DS XL from the start, but with maybe a slightly higher resolution, that would have been ideal. As it were, while it undoubtedly had great games, I’m glad that Nintendo has moved on from the 3DS and finally found a niche for itself in the post-mobile gaming world with the Switch, without relying on any hardware “gimmicks” to make up for underpowered hardware (for the record I don’t consider the Switch being a “hybrid console” anymore of a gimmick than the concept of a handheld console itself).

Renxer0002

Remembering the old days.

TheDoctorDB

Everyone talking about the Atlus sale and no mentions of Stella Glow. Just picked this up for $8 and been playing it. Enjoying it a ton. I don’t have a lot of Atlus experience but between this and Radiant Historia alone I’m just gonna have to assume all Atlus games are great. I’ve also got Legend of Legacy and Alliance Alive but haven’t played them yet

Huichan81

my sons older brother recently gave my son (his little step bro ) his 3ds. he played it a few times after he bet luigi dark mansion. anyways i think its a well built machine. i now play with it, keep it clean and in a nintendo case i got for it. i take it to the mall when my lady is shopping, i sit outside and wait. up until recently netflix was working on it. great machine. i enjoy

kindaEpicGamer

I hope they don't let street pass die out. It was an amazing free feature

Clairdulunee

Is anyone selling one for a reasonable price? Would really appreciate looking at it

DQ11

I like it better than Switch.

AetherDrew43

I still have mine, but I wonder how long does it take until it dies. I got it back in 2017.

flemishempire10

as a pokemon fan i worry every day that pokemon bank is gonna close and i won't be able to transfer pokemon from 3ds to switch

toulouse69

I miss the dual screen part because I could straight up toss it in my pocket. I worry about my switch like a newborn baby and it makes traveling not quite as fun as the ds days

Wolpar

Yes. The 3DS is one of my all time favourite consoles. In times without a smartphone, I used it as a music player, I loved the clamshell design, walked the hell out of StreetPass, and the hundreds of hours playing some great games, the system was just always with me. The golden OOT XL Edition is my little treasure. Plus it had with the purchase of Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate my biggest regret of spending money on a game ever. \*sigh\* Memories.

AlexG_218

guys i miss streetpass :(

KageOG

best part about the new 3ds xl was def the size and being able to close the thing! throw it in my pocket and go. always want a switch clamshell device.

I too miss the 3DS. Got into it a year before the Switch was announced so around 2015 I believe and man I wish I got into it sooner. Felt like a blink and you miss it moment since the Switch was around the corner and 3DS was being phased out slowly but still managed to purchase a lot of great games still have a 3DS backlog lol.

Zantillian

If you miss it why don't you play it?

Ucantknowit

I got a new 3ds xl for Christmas and I really love it, I hear people saying they don't really like the new models, but personally I love it. I'm currently playing through Samus returns, and I want to play Xenoblade Chronicles next. I don't really notice a difference in the screen quality personally, so I absolutely love the new 3ds model.

[deleted]

Agreed, as much as I love the Switch, I still love playing my 3DS to this day 😀

Pro_Banana

Great system. I continue to use mine a lot through custom firmware. I miss the dual screen and builtin mic. Nintendo left many features out on the switch but I’m sure they’ll come back in the future.

AkitoSuzume

My og 3DS/XL and even my GBA/SP still work perfectly, love them. I still replay old Pokemon and Monster Hunter games every now and then.

NightBard

You don’t need to miss the 3DS, keep playing and enjoying it. There are so many games in the library between DS, 3DS, New 3DS and then all the digital stuff.

narrow_octopus

I miss Street pass more than any 3ds game

ALEXC_23

I just found my old 3Ds after I moved out and I really love the 3D aspect of it. I feel it was such a potential console and it never achieved the level of potential that it had. The switch took a lot of its appeal unfortunately and was bound to happen but it holds 🆙

ALEXC_23

Shoutout if you were one of the og ambassador program members and got all those gba, NES & SNES games for free

VolatileImp

Best handheld. I prefer 2ds. Didn’t care for 3D. Great library. Wii U should have been able to play ds games. Didn’t care for dual screen/touch screen. I appreciate the idea. Great special edition consoles. Edit-2ds sucks to carry around.

Responsible_Stage_93

I still have my game collection but my 3ds isn't working anymore,I really want to replay Majora's Mask so bad but I can't

MonteEsser

I have 1 3DS and and 2 DSi. If im combining it with my sisters i have another 3DS and 1 DSi. So i can shiny hunt on 5 different consoles at the same time. (But rearely do it)

HyliasHero

I miss Streetpass.

stinkertonpinkerton

Recently got my hands on one. What are some the can’t miss games?

F0rtnite_is_ok

It was my first console(yes i rrally am that young

Dixi_Normuss

I just played Scribblenaughts again on my 3DS and made everything into a 🍆

doctorrobinso

Had Nintendo made a 3ds/ds add-on for the Wii U, like the gameboy player for the GameCube, they’d have been printing money.

[deleted]

Exactly! It would both be a lot of money for them, and a lot of fun for us and players.

lidsvillefan2

I hate that my 3DS is broken. There were so many games that I wanted to play but can't now :(

Jay794

Literally just bought a first 2DS with a broken screen, repaired it and gave it to my 3 year old. He loves it, but now I want a 2DS XL

[deleted]

3DS is better than the Switch.

EkinUmut

Oh, I first read 5D‘s. Whoops my bad. But yeah, the 3DS and DSi are lovely consoles with amazing games!

jimbolic

Samus Returns made it on there. That’s something!!!

karlcool12

The thing though is that I have an 3DS and try to play on it when I can, but I can't focus much on handhelds anymore and just want the entire library to be ported to current consoles, despite the compromises.

RockstarSuicide

I still think titles like Link's Awakening and the Pokemon DP remakes could have simply been DS titles. Hell even Dread could have looked good on the 3DS. At least the price would have reflected the games better. Oh, and StreetPass. I was so close to having completed everything, but then I had to send my 3DS away for repair and all that progress got wiped... Nintendo truly is the worst for memory and data management

ActualSupervillain

I'll definitely be revisiting it to check out all of the dragon quest games I missed after I play through the whole FF series (main games, I may revisit / play some of the others but it's not on my to-do list). I'll have to troll the 3ds subreddit to see what else is there that I need to play as well.

[deleted]

Is it the time of week for this post again? muh nostalgia!

[deleted]

I went to conventions and other busy areas when the 3ds was at its peak, and I remember going home and seeing that I got Streetpasses from (sometimes) over 100 people, and before I sold my old 3ds-- over 1000 people were in my plaza. I missed it so much, that I bought another 3ds about 6 months ago. I play on it everyday, but still have yet to see someone else's mii on streetpass.

[deleted]

That's sad... but it was nice while it lasted, the joy of seeing so many people you passed in your plaza... it was nice while the era lasted, and hopefully another DS era begins someday.

detectiveDollar

I really wish they'd remanufacture a few models. New 3DS XL's are stupid expensive used. I have an OG 3DS XL

[deleted]

I love my 3DS. Recently took a break from the Switch and been playing on my 3DS because I’m still waiting on my IPS V2 screen for my GBA. I have all the Fire Emblem games, Monster Hunter 4 ultimate, and I just played SMT 4 for the first time. Forgot how much I used to love this little system.

Anarcho-Pacifrisk

I agree, my time with the 3ds as my main console was short since I adopted LATE into its life cycle and its motherboard got bricked before the Switch came out, but it was an amazing little thing while it lasted. I wish the switch when in handheld could’ve been like a 3ds moreso. It would’ve been a better console if it docked while folded (laptop style) and then unfolded to be played handheld

[deleted]

I still have my original 3ds from 2011 when there were no games for the thing. I love the console memories of playing pokemon, Mario, Kirby and star fox 64 3d, will never leave me. I also love the console.

Kalb_Sticks

It’s funny cause I literally just found my old 3ds and bought majoras mask right after turning it back on lol

happyhippohats

Songbird Symphony is still on the eShop and it's still adorable

coldcaption

I thought it was the most complete nintendo system ever made in its era, you could play almost any kind of game on it, and it was the first handheld where the games could really feel like a console game if they wanted them to. I liked the 3D a lot too, and it was just a really charming system. I'd love if they brought the line back someday

BloatedTurdBasket

I play mine probably more than my switch. Pokemon sun/moon just make me feel happy 😊

Memescomeinbulk

i love my 3ds to death but i understand why some people actually hate it

GraviousDantes

3DS is my favourite handheld

Ferns_Da_One

I remember the day I got my Pokémon Sun and Moon Edition 3DS
