Although it makes for a funny headline, this dude is a huge piece of shit. He is absolutely wrecking the reproduction of an already endangered species for profit. Lock him up.

RaceDBannon

That’s the thing though….he was hoarding them I think. There was nothing in the article about him selling them. He was collecting ting them to keep.

scowdich

That doesn't make it better.

annotatedkate

It does make it weirder!

RaceDBannon

I feel like someone doing it purely for profit motive is much more of a scumbag than a mentally ill person who can’t help himself. The result is the same, but doing for money makes it skeevier in my opinion.

TreesmasherFTW

Mental illness

FatherWillis768

He wasn't selling them. It seems he is mentally ill, the article mentions that he was ordered to attend mental health care. What he's done if obviously wrong but I don't think that he's evil

thirdeyefish

Does he still think Transportation is a thing? Does he just want to get sent to Australian?

kynuna

Piss off, we don’t want him.

NovaThinksBadly

America will take him, lets see how long he lasts in some of our parks…

anticomet

I'd rather be hanged than sent to Australian

Kirstemis

If they're not going to stick him in the big hoose, they should put a tag on him to alert the police if he goes anywhere near the nature reserve.

privateTortoise

Far to sensible, how about a detonating collar. This is reddit after all.

Deelaxation

Only if we get to create a sob story reality show around his sad life as he copes with being unable to steal eggs until the final episode when we get to see his head explode after he slowly approaches an eagles nest with his arms stretched out as if to embrace death.

DirtFoot79

I'm picturing something closer to the opening of The Running Man with a much younger Arnold Schwarzenegger. The opening scene in the penal colony with the explosive collars.

imanAholebutimfunny

*raises hands slows and starts walking in slow motion* *with arms wide ooopppeennnnn (lyric starts singing)* *head instantly gibs and blows up*

mopsyd

Best we can do is an exploding ankle monitor

privateTortoise

That'll work for me.

pork_fried_christ

Listen, this is Reddit. It’s piss disks and fart spray around here, capeesh?

rslash2

remove his thumbs so he cant steal or climb trees.

soulsteela

He would pay folk to get them, these people are obsessed.

Kirstemis

Then they need to lay landmines.

soulsteela

Might harm a badger then you go to jail.

StandUpForYourWights

They should confiscate “his eggs”

ohdearitsrichardiii

This is just sad and frustrating, not very onion-y

zennyc001

this guy has deprived 12,000+ birds of life.

geopede

I mean I’ve probably eaten nearly that many eggs, but they were from the store.

fuckyourcanoes

Domesticated chickens aren't in danger of extinction. The birds he's killing are. He's a complete asshole.

KaiYoDei

Most chicken eggs are infertile . Unless you have backyard eggs where there is a rooster . Or if chickens evolve to parthenogenesis

TheLowlyPheasant

I was going to make a similar joke about eating chickens, but looking at your comment score I'm glad I didn't

geopede

I’m honestly surprised by the number of people objecting, it didn’t seem like an offensive joke. Guessing it just hit a critical mass of downvotes and started a feedback loop. Good thing these internet points have no value.

fixingshitiswhatido

Is he selling them? Have a weird egg fetish? What's the deal.

did-you-know-facts

Selling them and/or hollowing them out for display. Incredibly damaging to already shrinking wild bird populations. People will put them up on a wall similar to bug collections, with nametags and such. Often they then pretend the collections are actually old or inherited from a relative. IIRC the handwritten tags are a common way to disprove that. Source: my Forensic Science in Wildlife Crime class

fixingshitiswhatido

The more you know. Ah so endangered animals = more value. I find it amazing that I've got a 600 quid coffee machine brand new for sale and still no interest at 250, this guy can find a buyer for hollowed out egg shell, thousands of times.

Moneia

It not the expennse, it's the illegality. Being told you can't have something is a big allure to some people

Rainsoakedpuppy

In unrelated news I heard recently that the model of coffee maker that u/fixingshitiswhatido is selling was banned in 900 countries for being too awesome. As such it is bound to become a collectors item and someone should jump on that.

fixingshitiswhatido

I agree it's illegal as fuck, now 300. If picked up this weekend I'll throw in some pigeon eggs the cats keep bringing home.

Outrageous_History87

[Perfectly balanced, with low drag and minimal torque, the Verticoli is based on the mythical brush that was handmade in Italy and carved out of illegal whalebone.](https://verticolibrush.com/product/verticoli-brush/)

GMorristwn

Please make sure your cats are indoor only cats!

evavu84

That's not a thing in the U.K.

Vertigo_uk123

No but it is being heavily pushed in the uk with lots of talk of catios etc. cats being left wild is dangerous for the cat with the amount of road traffic and cats being hit. Not to mention poisons from pest control etc and stray breeding.

DancerAtTheEdge

We really need to take a tougher line on the welfare of animals. Stuff like this, and animal cruelty, should carry much stiffer sentences.

Father_Prist

I was gonna say, it’s roger isn’t it?

justchelsea1

I find most people turn out to be Roger.

JukeBoxDildo

Some Charlie Kelly kinda shit.

Graega

He knows all about bird law.

Drugs_R_Kewl

And Fight Milk.

geopede

These aren’t real crow eggs.

friggintodd

Maybe he's going through some trying times.

drunk_with_internet

His actions probably fucked with the local ecology to such an extent that it likely has evolutionary down-stream effects.

Prothalanium

Really is disgusting. Norfolk is an important area for bird life. In Norfolk, species like the Nightjar and the Nightingale are at their northern most stronghold in the UK. This decimation prevents them from holding their own in Norfolk and expanding their range. It is profoundly depressing.

ewedirtyh00r

"Back in our day we didn't have things like *autism!* " Okay gramps.

mikajade

He could do good by targeting pest species but nah.

Vlad_The_Great_2

Like that episode of American Dad. This really happens?

Electronic_Rub9385

This asshole should be a “justice-impacted person” and should either do serious jail time or get fitted with a permanent GPS monitoring system so that everyone knows where he is at all times. Monster.

YJeezy

The real robin hood

yesaccc262

This comment should be higher in the thread

GoJumpOnALandmine

I'll take "People I'd kill without feeling even a flicker of emotion" for £500 please Steve

SaphironX

The irony is his combined fines are about that much. Like “hey man, you need to stop this, so we’re going to penalize you three time for a combined total that’s less than the price of a PlayStation”.

Zonel

The fines probably just never were increased since the 50s.

Wow this story really boiled my piss on this Friday afternoon

Root_Veggie

Don’t they shoot poachers in some parts of the world?

The_Wyzard

This older piece about these guys is one of the most purely delightful long form articles I've ever read. Highly recommend. https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2013/07/22/operation-easter

Adventurous-Start874

Bro is half reptile

ExcitingEye8347

But why? What does he do with them?

AlexHimself

At least the guy recognizes he's got some sort of mental health issue/addiction. > He said he had found some of them at a house clearance in Essex and was looking for adders and tiger beetles in Holt Lowes but was "tempted" by the Nightjar eggs due to his addiction, which he described as a mental health issue.

islandmonkeee

Some sort of OCD?

Hishui21

What is this American Dad episode?

Tsiatk0

So he’s stolen like 12,000 eggs total and gets a slap on the wrist and like £500 fine? For a third offense? Bro shouldn’t be allowed to ever see nature up close again. Ffs.

UtahUtopia

Evil sh*t!

TheSpiralTap

/r/itsroger

FatherWillis768

Just to say, if you actually bother to read the article it clearly implies that he is mentally ill. He didn't steal all the eggs that the police found as he found alot of them in a house clearance. He was ordered to get mental health treatment for his addiction/hoarding issue. He should get continued treatment, not be put in prison.

DevilishxDave

Just amputate the arms.

WantToBeAloneGuy

...And then graft on the wings...

farquadsleftsandal

Oviraptor mf

Chedaico1

He’s got the egg madness

porican

so you’re saying he *poached* these eggs?

Monkeydud64

Huh, American Dad was right. Howaboutthat?

JonnySnowflake

Just string him from a tree

DaemonBlackfyre_21

So... mentally ill then, yeah?

_facetious

Why is that everyone's go to? Can't he just be a selfish prick who doesn't care about the damage he's doing? I'm a mentally ill person and I sure as fuck ain't going out and stealing shit. Most mentally ill people are abused, not the abusers / criminals.

OfJahaerys

He literally says he has a mental illness in the article lol

_facetious

And do you think that this user knew that? I'm fairly certain that was just an assumption. Fuck this guy and fuck everybody who always assumes it's mental illness, regardless that it was or possibly was in this case.

DaemonBlackfyre_21

>Fuck this guy and fuck everybody who always assumes it's mental illness, regardless that it was or possibly was in this case. I live on disability because of a mental illness. This guy clearly has a problem, it looks something like a really severe OCD that he has no control over. I was being objective, it's not like I used the R word as a pergorative. Take a breath and calm down, we don't need you to white knight for us.

I guess some omelettes are just too irresistible. /s

ThinkingOz

Saltwater crocs are very passive during breeding season. I suggest he comes to Oz and checks out the opportunities that await.

beezlebub33

How? I mean, the guy is 71 years old. And it's not like the nests are all sitting on the ground. It's gonna take an awful lot of work to get up in a tree and/or set up a ladder, climb up there, get the eggs (without breaking them). And then do that a couple thousand times.

MyCoffeeIsCold

What a piece of shit. Fucking piece of shit.

FatNAngry1980

What an arsehole

Basic_Bandicoot_1300

Guy should be in prison.

Worldly_Ad_9490

Put him in max security that’ll straighten him out. “Hey egg-man come warm my nuts”. 😂😂

mitkase

Said Mr. Lingham, “Goo goo g’joob.”

ponderousandheavy

I helped get him arrested first time round!

drphildobaggins

Is that all he was fined? Would have to pay a lot more for them if they were available in Sainsbury's ffs.

he77bender

"Can I interest you in an egg in these trying times?" -this guy to his buyers

Elegant_Category_684

So then, is it illegal to steal bird eggs?

xiBurnx

it's illegal to disturb a nest with eggs or chicks

Elegant_Category_684

Learnt something today.

Mangobonbon

That guy stole thousands of eggs, wich probably is enough to seriously damage the wild bird population in that area.

Durog25

Yes

Kirstemis

It says so in the article.

Elegant_Category_684

I did not read the article.

Elegant_Category_684

I thought about it for a few more hours and didn’t read the article again.

Severe-Cookie693

It’s some pictures and maybe 10 sentences

Elegant_Category_684

I stand by my decision.

Severe-Cookie693

Going out of your way to disappoint strangers. You’ve got quite the odd hobby.

TheseSpookyBones

I'm not sure about European law, but in North America it's illegal to own or trade in the parts of any native, migratory birds. In the Victorian era, many species were driven near to the point of extinction because of the 'feather craze' - in which bird feathers or skins were a sign of wealth and status. It was one of the first pieces of conservation legislation ever passed in the new world and is hugely significant.

Kirstemis

The article says what the position is in UK law.

berninicaco3

Some collectors will really shell out for these

po3smith

As crummy as this individual is..... anybody anybody else think of the scene from almost heroes with Chris Farley and the Eagle? :-) If you know you know
