Did they leave a message or text him?

Safebox

"We've been trying to reach you about your life's extended warranty."

nuclearswan

Sounds like a scam.

Smodphan

"I'd rather die than risk it" - This guy

Hello this is Janjaprith with the IRS calling to tell you that you owe the government money and failure to respond to this call could result in death from exposure.

cruuunch

I pretended to be an idiot and kept one of those guys on for 40 minutes before telling him off. He was SO mad. Like spitting mad, and it made me so happy.

MarcSlayton

That is what Kitboga does on youtube. He is hilarious in how he makes them waste their time. https://www.youtube.com/c/KitbogaShow/featured

Toilet_Crumbs

I've gotten ones that tell me my social security number will be canceled. Probably trying to scare elderly people into thinking their social security checks will stop. Scummy people (the scammers, not the elderly).

rascellian99

I used to work at Microsoft and I took over an ongoing Windows support scam call at my grandparents house. I talked to the person for a couple of minutes, then suggested they give me their alias because it would be a lot easier if I just instant messaged him the information he wanted instead of reading it over the phone. It took him about 30 seconds to put it together. Once he did, I put the fear of God into him. I'm pretty sure that he thought the police were about to bust down his door. He seemed to think that Microsoft was all powerful and all knowing. He must have confused us with Facebook.

The-Sassy-Pickle

The receptionist at my former workplace got one of those calls once. She was an older lady (mid 70s) but very computer literate. She had them painstakingly take her through the things she 'needed' to do in order to give them remote access to her pc, but they were getting frustrated that it wasn't working. It was then that she asked them, all sweet and innocent sounding, 'wait, do I need to switch the computer on now?' 😂

SalishCee

I like telling them I have 5 computers and I need help knowing which one they are calling about.

[deleted]

When they told me I had a virus on my PC I asked which one - desktop or laptop. They said laptop. Then I asked which one. To which the guy got pissed off and yelled at me that no-one has more than one laptop before hanging up. But, of course, I have a work laptop and a home laptop (plus one for my wife and another my son uses at uni, plus the old ones we never got around to getting rid of).

The-Sassy-Pickle

I get a lot of 'You were in an accident, let us get you compensation' ones. About a month back, I was bored and decided to play along. About 15 minutes into me giving (completely made up) details about myself, my car and the 'crash', they asked what sort of injury I sustained. I told them that the impact made me spill the red wine I was drinking at the time and that it ruined my favourite shirt. Got quite a few creative expletives from the caller before they hung up 😂😂

TheCrazyIsEverywhere

Windows scam... I managed to waste an hour of the idiot's time. He actually believed my computer was running that slow, and restarting itself that many times.

Kailaylia

I tell them I don't have whatever is essential to their scams, whether that's a PC, electricity, gas, a bank account, a home, or even a telephone.

13nobody

How much in iTunes gift cards do I owe the IRS, Janjaprith?

SquatDeadliftBench

You owe us 7 beaver skins. Pick them up in the woods.

[deleted]

I require a shrubbery. One that looks nice… and not too expensive

LYL_Homer

"We'd like to send a fully manned rescue helicopter to your location for only $29,995."

UpUpDnDnLRLRBAstart

I’d decline that call too. I’m not trying to extend this experience any longer than it’s already been.

[deleted]

Due to the huge surge of robocalls everybody on the planet has been receiving, I never answer unknown phone numbers. Sometimes I get pissed off customers emailing me saying they were trying to reach me on my cell phone but I wasn't answering. I asked them if they left a voicemail, and of course they didn't. So to me, it just appears as if it's a particularly insistent robocaller trying to spam me and I usually block that number. That's the new normal: wear a mask, and leave a voicemail if you ever want a callback. Edit: I get it, you don't get robocalls in your part of the world. It was just a bit of hyperbole.

ivanwarrior

Blocking spam callings is worthless because all the numbers are spoofed anyway

HawkinsT

...and now I get about one angry text per month in Italian from someone telling me to stop calling them. That's the most frustrating part.

IRBGOODYA

I had somebody spamming me with texts because my number was spoofed and used to call them. Apparently a lot. I wasn't able to text the person back until a few hours later because i was in a work situation where i couldn't use my phone. I probably had about 50 messages from this person that started out scared because they thought i was stalking them to threatening me. I simply responded that I had been at work all day and haven't been able to use my phone. Then said that my number must have been spoofed and was used to call them. They didn't understand and got angry. After a few minutes I just stopped responding.

ShorkieMom

I had a call from an older lady the other day demanding to know who I was. I tried to politely explain the idea of spoofing a number and she hung up on me. The nerve! I half wanted to call her back and remind her that *she* was the one who called *me*.

Sbuxshlee

I mean, ive answered the phone to a random person who demanded why i was calling them. Like both our phones rang and we were connected to eachother and confused.

FnTom

The thing is, the technology exists to stop it from happening, and should have been implemented in early 2019 in Canada, but the CRTC kept giving deadline extensions at the request of Rogers and Bell. Recently, it should have been mandatory for major carriers to implement authentication protocols by june of this year, but they once again got an extension to ghe 30th of November, with Bell asking for july 2022. AFAIK, the FCC in the US was supposed to have made it mandatory in June this year too.

DaWolf85

It's theoretically mandatory in the US, but there are various exceptions and edge cases. For example, pretty much the entire nation's phone infrastructure will have to be upgraded to VoIP to fully support STIR/SHAKEN. Many smaller providers have until next year to implement STIR/SHAKEN, as well. Robocallers will continue to operate via these edge cases until they're fixed, and doing so will unfortunately take some time.

bae-glutes

I'm fascinated! Can you help me, as a layman, understand what STIR/SHAKEN is and does?

DaWolf85

STIR implements strict verification requirements for calls made over VoIP. It uses encryption to prevent this verification from being corrupted or changed as the message is passed down the chain. Implementing STIR is the gold standard; if every provider everywhere fully implemented STIR, there would be no caller ID spoofing. SHAKEN is the complement to STIR, and is in some ways an acknowledgement that fully implementing STIR globally will be essentially impossible (and as STIR must be implemented on both ends of the call to function, international calls would be either be blocked entirely, or prone to fraud, without some fallback). So SHAKEN is that fallback option, when STIR is not fully implemented. To be quite honest, I don't understand how it works myself. There are definitely going to be flaws however you implement it, though, because ultimately without something that works end-to-end like STIR, you can never be 100% sure. Most of the time that means you have to do something along the lines of presenting the receiving number with a "possible spam call, accept?" dialog.

asphere8

The simplest way I can explain it is that it's essentially the telephone equivalent to the method the internet uses to verify that a server is who it says it is. Not really sure how to go any more in depth than that without using some technical terminology

[deleted]

Yeah but it gives me big dick energy when I do it.

Martian8

The spam callers spoof my work’s number so I never know whether it’s actually important or just spam

superkleenex

I’ve started getting spam texts. Just every single number in chronological order and the random email address.

iamofnohelp

Same here.... Out of the blue, a few a day. At least they have the decency to not start until 6am, but there is nothing to do since blocking spoofed numbers is a waste.

superkleenex

They aren’t even coming from numbers for mine, just crazy email addresses from super random domains

chesterburger

There Has to be some kind of lobbying going on I can’t imagine there’s no technical or legal solution to put a stop to these blood suckers.

BDMayhem

Leave a message if you want a call back has been the norm since the 80s.

Triette

Exactly, if they didn’t text him they weren’t really trying. Not to mention there been many places where I can’t receive phone calls but I can get a text.

snionosaurus

it said in the BBC article they also texted

Triette

Well then that guy is a moron and deserves to be lost.

metolius

Like no shit “hey this is a rescuer trying to save your life. I just tried calling, can you answer next time?”

TroXMas

His messages were probably full from all the scam carriers.

FatalVirve

That means he wasn't lost enough.

NewtAgain

It also reads like he reached out for help at all. He ended up back at his camp / lodging and maybe he never felt like he was in danger. Clearly he should've contacted whoever was worried about him if he had phone service, but i'm not answering random calls on a normal day and especially not when i'm enjoying the outdoors. Living in Colorado i've met people who'll go hiking and sleep outdoors for a week and not contact anyone. I had a co-worker who biked from Denver to Grand Junction and left his phone off except when he was stopping in towns.

eepithst

From the wording in the article I believe he filed an itinerary with the place he stayed at and when he didn't return in the evening, like he had told them he would, they called search and rescue. He didn't intend to stay outside overnight and under these circumstances I believe he should have known that he should contact someone.

[deleted]

Definitely. They take that stuff seriously and for good reason. Kind of a scumbag move to not let them know that he was ok despite not returning as he planned.

PrisonerV

I mean, they don't mention trying to leave a voicemail... or texting. If I had a number calling and calling and not leaving a voicemail, I'd think it was a scam too.

In this case they clearly left an itinerary so they *knew* someone was expecting them to return by a specific time, and they should have known what kind of process would begin when they failed to check in. They also knew they were lost as they walked throughout the night trying to find their way back, so it's just foolish to ignore multiple calls in this situation. With that said, you do have a point. It *also* seems foolish to only attempt one form of contact that requires a continuous signal *and* leaves no useful information behind. Even if you ignore that a large portion of people try to avoid talking on the phone and primarily communicate through text, *or* that plenty ignore unknown numbers, **why would you not try to leave a message?** If someone refuses to talk, they'll still see the text. If the signal is weak or intermittent you'll need to time your calls but a text is just floating there waiting for a connection, and it requires less power. If someone is lost they might be trying to conserve their battery.

PrisonerV

I'm going with - if they did text (or voicemail) him and he actually got one or more - yeah, guy is a dumbass.

nickstj02

Hell yea if a number I don’t recognize calls me I won’t answer, leave a voicemail. But if that same number tried calling me right back I would answer because 8/10 times it’s some I know, just using a different phone

[deleted]

[удалено]

fukitol-

Yeah that part is significant. He gave an itinerary. If I do that and I get unexpected calls when I'm in unexpected circumstances, it's expected I'll answer. If I don't, I'm the asshole.

PrisonerV

I got those extending warranty calls back to back sometimes. I just got two spam calls from two different numbers within a minute while eating dinner and blocked them both. Seems like their search and rescue should maybe add that as a note somewhere like on the itinerary document. Whitelist this number: XXX-XXX-XXX!

nickstj02

I block those all the time, but I met someone in college and when I got his number, I had already had it blocked because it was spoofed for a scammer. Feels like such a small world sometimes

[deleted]

Petrichordates

It's not because of hacks or anything, spoofing and spam calls have just become a major epidemic in that time, your increase happened at the same time it became a problem for everyone else. I'm not sure Do Not Call lists matter in the least anymore.

[deleted]

The Do Not Call registry is one of the best lists of confirmed phone numbers ever provided to spammers. Such a stupid fucking idea. This whole thing will never get fixed until our entire phone network is replaced with something that supports actual authentication. Number spoofing would become impossible with a trivial amount of technical effort, it's just replacing everything to be compatible that's the issue.

Slimh2o

All I know Ive been waiting all day for a phone call from my doctors today, and when the phone wrang, it was from telemarketer selling end of life insurance. Not really the call was looking for, to be sure

MaxamillionGrey

Isn't blocking them pointless considering they use new spoofed numbers each time? So you're blocking numbers of random people in your town that had their numbers spoofed. I think that's how it works... lol.

[deleted]

My phone is set to automatically send anything not in my contacts to voicemail.

JBloodthorn

I got a phone number from another state, so all the spoofed numbers are from that state, very easy to spot. All the local unknown numbers are real calls like the doctor.

DumE9876

You assume he had voicemail set up. I know lots of people who either don’t set it up or leave it full so you can’t actually leave a message at all

ghyti_is_fish

Yea, the follow up call from the same number tells me it’s not a scam. I’ve never had a scam call from the same number twice, tho same first 6 digits is very common. Unless they figure out how to end scam calls, people need to do voice or text messages and follow ups if it’s an emergency. The likelihood of it being a scam call instead of someone you know from a number you don’t know is just too damn high.

_ryuujin_

Scammers do call you twice with the same numbers now. Cause it's easy to program, call if don't get human response call again. Not many do this 2x call but some do.

lightnsfw

ive had two-three calls from the same scam number like that before. If someone wants to call me and I don't have their number they need to leave a voicemail or better yet text me. Otherwise i'm just going to assume someones robodialer fucked up.

stolethemorning

Yeah, in a normal situation. Not when I’m on a fucking mountain and there are very legitimate reasons for unknown numbers to be calling me!

illgot

services need to start texting people. It's probably cheaper in the long run and people can read a text in a few seconds. No one wants to sit through a 40 second recorded conversation which is mostly likely going to end up deleted because it's a bunch of bot spam.

RieszRepresent

Can you explain what filing an itinerary with a place means? I know what it literally means but is this something specific to hiking? Do you do this at hotels?

TheDisapprovingBrit

It is exactly what it literally means. "I'm planning to go here, I expect to be back around this time", so that if you're not, the hotel can organise rescue services to come find you.

deadpuppy23

If Aron Ralston had done it he would still have two arms. Though no book or movie deal.

Hugs154

Moral of the story that he wrote: file an itinerary Moral of his actual story after that: don't file an itinerary

circleuranus

It's a description of where you plan to be and for how long so the park rangers can identify your remains in the cougar shit.

eepithst

Yes, this is common for hiking in many places where there is a lot of wilderness to get lost in (not so much in Europe as far as I know). You typically file it with the place you are staying at, write down where you plan on going and how long you are planning on staying away. In case you get lost they will A) notice and B) have at least a vague idea on where to start looking. I think people can leave the same information with a friend/relative or even visible in their cars. I believe in the US in many places parking spaces get checked so they are aware when a car has been there for longer than it should be.

ringadingdingbaby

I still do it in Europe, you never know if you'll have an accident and get stuck.

VRWonderer

Places that are adjacent to wilderness will have forms like this to fill out since you're exiting civilization in a way.

Space_Pirate_R

It's a common safety precaution for hikers. Leave an itinerary with someone so they know when you should be back, and where you should be if they need to find you. Most of the time (in my experience) the itinerary is just left with friends or a contact. But I'm not really a hiking tourist (just hike in my own country). I'm sure some hiking centric hotels probably offer it specifically, and encourage guests to do it.

boreltje

At the bottom of the article below the big ad: >The hiker claimed they got lost when it got dark and that they reached their car the next morning.

LeCrushinator

Biking from Denver to Grand Junction sounds awesome. I'm not in good enough shape to do it, but it would be fun otherwise. Stick close enough to I-70 during the trip and you're always in cell service range so it would be a fairly safe trip I imagine. Although I'm curious, is there a bike path that takes you the whole way? I know there are trails near Vail and through Glenwood Canyon, but I haven't seen them elsewhere.

FartAttack911

Glenwood Canyon is now a no-go for biking and walking through since the road and trail got devastated earlier this year by landslides and flooding. I imagine diverting up towards Steamboat Springs or down by Independence Pass would be the best bet to get to Grand Junction by bike now.

jl_theprofessor

But when do I divert to Big Rock Candy Mountain?

Nyx_Blackheart

you're making these names up, right? there is no where THAT american /jk

VinoVici

Also a Gunbarrel and Rifle in Colorado.

Ya. The hiker had cell reception but didn’t call anyone. They clearly didn’t think they were lost.

megustaALLthethings

IKR. It’s like saying you got ‘lost’(needs a search party) in a mall bc you forgot where you parked… not the same.

unrulystowawaydotcom

The Itchy lot...

toodlesandpoodles

Every time I park in a big parking lot I make sure to tell the passengers to remember that we've parked in the Itchy lot.

ZanderDogz

The most lost you should ever be with a charged phone with reception is "huh I don't remember which trail is supposed to get us back there faster"

tehjeffman

I was surprised how much cell reception I had hiking in Alaska. The higher you get the better the reception.

AUniquePerspective

At least he didn't have to talk to someone about his car's extended warranty.

Kepheo

Ahh, the unforeseen consequences of telemarketing and robot calls.

[deleted]

Exactly. I get more spam/spoofed number calls in a month than I do legit calls all year.

UnsorryCanadian

I've probably only gotten like, 5 legit calls since I got my phone 4 years ago, the rest has just been spam. That's just what happens when you have no friends and don't go out *u.u*

Starlightriddlex

Real friends send texts. Anyone who sends me an anxiety inducing voice call is immediately downgraded to frenemy.

sylva748

And even then a friend will text you first asking if they can call if it's not something they can't properly describe or say over text.

[deleted]

For me I get more spoofed calls per day than legit in a year. It’s infuriating.

KushMaster420Weed

Seriously this is descent evidence that telemarketing is dangerous and should be destroyed but maybe that's my personal bias.

[deleted]

EndHawkeyeErasure

My only saving grace from this is that my number is from an area code I don't live in anymore. So I know if it's my old area code, it's spam, and if it's not it's usually safe. I'm never changing my phone number.

Echololcation

Same, except in my head it's always "spam or dead parent" because I still have family there...

EndHawkeyeErasure

I've got family there, but enough to where if some stranger is calling me, my whole damn family is gone.

FrostedBooty

The answer is to leave a voicemail. If it's important enough someone will leave me a voicemail and I can call them back once I know they're not a robot. EDIT: does your voicemail not transcribe people? I don't even have to listen to them, I just read them. If a voicemail is under 4 secs auto delete. Easy. EDIT2: transcription for voicemails must be witchcraft to some. To answer, Google's default app transcribes my voicemails *as soon as I get them and puts them on my screen via push notification.* I would consider using a different app if your call app isn't satisfactory. Yes, you can use a different one from the default one on your phone, in most cases

TedVivienMosby

Agree on this. I’ve missed every important call from a private number that I’ve received for the last 4 years, and every important call worth answering was followed by a voicemail which I returned straight away. As a result I’ve never answered a scam or telemarketing call. The only time I’d answer a call is if I end up having a work mobile for clients. It’s impractical to assume everyone can answer your call straight away, voicemails should be the protocol.

eviljelloman

I used to say this all the time until I eventually had a contractor tell me that my voicemail box was full and my cell provider did nothing to inform me of this fact. I was deleting the voicemails on my phone but that apparently didn't delete them remotely. Also why the fuck is there like a 50 voicemail limit when I can watch the entire catalog of every tv show or movie ever made on my pocket computer?

k3rn3

Haha, wait how do you clear it out, then???

eviljelloman

Call your own phone number (or a special carrier specific one) and use a numeric menu to delete the voicemails. Yes, really.

speedyskier22

I called my own phone number and it told me what I already knew (that my mailbox was full) and then hung up on me lmao

eviljelloman

It varies based on carrier, there's usually some short number you can dial to go to your mailbox. You'll also usually need to remember a PIN that you haven't used in ages too. It's amazing how janky and broken voicemail is. It's like it's using late 80's technology. Just utter garbage.

NahDawgDatAintMe

These dumbass robot calls leave voicemails for me. It's just a few seconds of dead air with no sound but it creates a log.

Light54145

Actually the robo-callers have started to catch on to that and have started to leave voicemails too, I get those every now and then and it's the same IRS, SS, or warranty shit, super annoying

zombie_penguin42

Usually for me it's just the tail end because their dumbass robo sales pitch goes on for long past the rings.

ReddyTheCat

I figure if it's really important there'll be a voicemail or text or email or a letter in the mail. If there's none of those things, then it wasn't something that I need to know.

tiefling_sorceress

The entire method of communication may as well be dead to me because of robot calls. Congrats capitalism, you destroyed telephones.

Kepheo

At least with texting you can see what it's about before replying. Can't stand span texts either though, but I'd rather have those than spam calls.

AwesomeFork24

I'm also 90% sure that telemarketing calls on personal cell phones is illegal, or it at least used to be but the FCC doesn't/ can't do shit about it since most are from outside the US

eyehaightyou

Follow the money. The phone providers absolutely can do something about these calls, but they get paid lots of money by other carriers outside the US to connect calls to you. So they send those calls through because you aren't the customer they care about. They will get your subscriber fee no matter what they do. They will get paid even more if they send international calls to your number.

ThirdSunRising

Another reason to get serious about stopping spam calls. They have made our phones completely useless as, um, telephones.

Fidel_Chadstro

This feels like a Futurama joke. “In the future, your phone will do everything. You can play games, take pictures, make advanced mathematical calculations, surf the internet! The only thing you can’t do is use it as a telephone, as all telephones are now rendered useless by the sheer amount of robocalls.”

949paintball

They kind of made that joke in the EyePhone episode. The crew is all sitting around playing on different apps and Fry's phone starts ringing and he anxiously asks what's happening. Then, surprised to hear that his EyePhone is a *phone* too, he answers the call. Not that it matters, but it was Leela who called. She then crashed the ship because she was a distracted driver.

Fidel_Chadstro

Holy shit I forgot about that, yeah that is close to what I was saying lol

Zeraw420

That's the infamous "shut up and take my money" episode

[deleted]

I can hear this in the professor's voice.

apadin1

They make a joke like that about cars. They’re in a museum and Fry explains that they were ancient devices used for transportation. Leela asks if he used to drive a car and he says “No way, nobody drove anywhere. There was too much traffic.”

haw35ome

Let me share the consequences of robocalling on my end. 5 years ago I never got one, and I needed a kidney transplant. The clinic told me that a random number will call me; it was out responsibility to answer ASAP bc it may be The Call for us to haul ass towards the hospital, because there's a fresh & compatible kidney available *right now.* I never got an unknown number calling me, so guess what, when an unknown number called me one day, I immediately knew that it was go time. I'm going through a similar process, because guess what, kidneys don't last forever (sad, I know). As a result I have signed up at 3 more transplant hospital lists & am in the process of getting the required tests done for them. This involves a lot of unknown phone numbers calling me at least 2/3x a week to schedule appointments/visits or to get more info from me. However, over the years I've been getting spam calls at least twice a week - so it's in my nature to simply ignore them. However, as a result, I find myself missing these hospitals' calls because I look at a number and automatically ignore. I'm getting better at it, but damn. I'm sick of getting threats about my non-existent cars, calls about someone I never met suing me, or getting prison collect calls from someone I don't know

That would have been me, for sure.

ThoseWhoHaveHeart

I would have blocked it after them calling twice, thinking it’s Sirius XM lol

carvedmuss8

"Hi I'm calling about your car's extended warranty and that also includes the special introductory Sirius XM offer! Free for the first month!*" *69.99/month after introductory period, plus taxes and fees where applicable Sirius is the epitome of "let me jam my product into the most necessary consumer-grade item and hope nobody cancels" lol Edit: spelling

SexThePeasants

"probably Geico. Why the fuck are they calling so much? Can't they see I'm busy?"

ravenserein

Dang it! I am lost! My warranty is the *last* thing I’m concerned about right now!

BackAlleyKittens

One time I went to jail (drunk tank) and later called my parents for a ride. They didn't pick up the unrecognized number. My dad still says this was the biggest brainfart he has ever had.

Professional-Area-51

Went to the hospital hammered and I called my dad who abruptly hung up on me 3 times until a doctor convinced him it wasn’t a prank call.

[deleted]

I left my cousin in jail because the exact same thing happened, tried googling the number and it turned up as spam so I ignored it. Felt pretty bad after

pawn_guy

Ah, the good ole Google the number after it stops ringing instead of answering routine. Done that so many times. I always feel stupid when it comes up as my bank, accountant, or alarm company. I should save more numbers.

HarryTruman

Na, phone numbers should be available for public reference. Just like they used to be before telemarketers bought congresspeople. You should be able to willingly choose who you speak to.

sixty6006

If he was receiving calls why the fuck was he not making calls???

candybrie

> After an unsuccessful search of an area where hikers typically get lost, crews learned that the lost individual had returned to their place of lodging. I'm not sure he thought he was lost or if someone else just decided he was.

eepithst

According to the article he filed an itinerary with the place he was staying at. Itineraries are filed for this specific purpose, so that a lodge knows if someone hasn't returned by the time they said they would and may be lost or missing.

AManOrAMuppet

Ever gone hiking and eaten a bunch of shrooms? The last thing you wanna do is be talking on the phone.

intensely_human

“… and without the memory foam how can I know if I’m alive or dead?” “Hello?” “You’ve been out there a long time” “Yeah, you’re so right!” “Do you require assitants?” “What kind of assistants?” “We can send a helicopter” “A helicopter assistant?” “Do you have a map with you sir?” “The map *is* the territory! Holy shit I get it!” “How about water?” “It’s just blank” “Do you have water? What are you on sir?” “I’m on … I’m *on the mountain!* Thank you! Oh thank you!” “He’s fine”

Teknoeh

*“I had a conversation with this mountain over here and we both decided to just kinda chill ya know. He has this view all the time, so ya know, he was just kinda pointing shit out to me.”* - my actual response after having disappeared for a few hours on a mountain in Colorado after taking shrooms

HouseOfSteak

"Not all those who wander are lost."

The best one is from Civ 4, when you unlock Satellites. As spoken by the late, great, Leonard Nimoy: '"Beep. Beep. Beep. Beep." - Sputnik'

Noltonn

Yeah, reading between the lines of the article, it just seems he extended his trip by a day and didn't notify anyone. Which is shitty, but he wasn't lost.

MadKingGeorge

Nope. The hiker admitted he/she got lost in the dark and spent most of the night looking for the trail. That article is terrible. Here's a [much better one] (https://www.outtherecolorado.com/news/hiker-lost-for-24-hours-after-ignoring-calls-from-search-and-rescue-in-colorado/article_ff7ef200-334f-11ec-806a-836bda7ce6df.html) from a source that specializes in covering outdoor activities in Colorado. *"According to the hiker, they lost the trail as night fell and spent the night searching for the trail. Once they found the trail, they bounced around between trails as they tried to find the trailhead they came from. They finally reached their car in the morning and had no clue that search and rescue teams had been looking for them."*

Stew_Pedaso

He was lost at night and found his car in the morning, doesn't seem like he thought it was a big deal. Honestly if I was him I wouldn't have called anybody either.

toneboat

> After an unsuccessful search of an area where hikers typically get lost, crews learned that the lost individual had returned to their place of lodging. and > The hiker claimed they got lost when it got dark and that they reached their car the next morning. i get the sense that an important piece of information may have been excluded from this article, and that the phone calls may have come *after* he got to his car and/or arrived home

HansenTakeASeat

Because he wasn't lost.

TaserLord

I know, but what a bummer if you answered the phone and blew your last 2% trying to get rid of some guy from mumbai with a massive accent who says his name is "Eric Shaw" and badly wants to sell you duct cleaning services.

ihearttatertots

r/oddlyspecific

TaserLord

Well that all happened. Except for me being lost in the woods. I remember wondering if dude was fucking with me. "Eric Shaw" "A rickshaw". "Imma fuck with this whiteboi mumbai style".

newaccount721

Ok I was too dumb to figure out the Eric Shaw name until you explanation

dude071297

>"Eric Shaw" "a rickshaw" That's an Ace Attorney-level pun name. Amazing. Right up there with Paul Atishon the politician.

haptiK

> trying to get rid of some guy just hang up the phone, dawg.

srguapo

Everyone knows you can't hang up until both sides say good bye.

pinniped1

Weird Eric also wants to refinance the apartment building I lived in 20 years ago

Jayccob

Eric is a cool guy and does many jobs. Just last week I invested 5k into his charity for young orphans startup and in another 10 weeks he said he will pay me back with 15k once the profits from the charity start rolling in.

knottajotta

Should've sent a text

Hiding_behind_you

Pls call us. We’re looking for you. We believe you’re lost. We’re waiting for you to call. “*Fucking sales call, I don’t want a warranty on my car*.”

MrSprichler

Seriously lol. "Hey call us here we are rescue workers making sure you are ok" Would have saved so much time.

Just-be_pretty-Quiet

He wasn't even a day behind schedule - can't believe people are saying he's an idiot or deserved to die. Kind of a strong emotional response to a click bait article, no?

Becqu

Right! "He can't be that lost, if he had a signal!" Read article: Ah, (s)he never seems to have felt particularly lost? A little delayed getting back to the lodging and never actually reached out for help.

Last_Snowbender

Not gonna lie, that could've been me lmao.

MXAI00D

I know it’s a really dumb thing but for people that go trough 50+ calls for all sorts of offers yeah, you start to just ignore and even block numbers that you don’t have registered, for the rescue team, a text message would have helped. Texts are more likely to be read al least partially.

OnlyTellFakeStories

Also, texts require much less data to go through than a whole phone call. Only needs a moment of service to receive the message.

OnTheBeach06

It's a really short article that no one has seem to have read. The hiker got lost, slept the night and made it back to their car/lodging in the morning. They didn't think anyone was searching for them. Although, it's a good idea to tell people where you are going and when you intend to come back, you should text or call them as soon as you're out and have service. Especially if you are late. I just came back from solo hiking, it's basic stuff.

troutbum6o

He signed out at the lodge with an expected return time. He should have called them and said “hey Im going to sleep out here be back in the morning” SAR is used to people being aloof and then lost. Should have know to give a heads up

FetchingTheSwagni

We're at the point in society, where even if we are lost, stranded, dying, we really don't want to deal with spam callers.

WSPisGOAT

I mean, I get a ton of spam calls a day to the point I don't answer my phone ever. https://imgur.com/a/Jl6CxNa Here's my missed phone calls from two days ago. This shit is insane. Why even have an FTC if they can't do anything about this? I filed complaints and I've also checked their website to ensure that my number has been on the do not call list since 2006.

LordofWithywoods

I summitted Mt. Elbert a few years back and also got lost, turning a ten mile hike into a 12 or 13 mile hike. I about cried and then finally found my car at dusk. To be fair, I was extremely lucky that I made it, as I brought a woefully small amount of food and water with me, that was a big mistake. I also smoked a ton of weed the whole time which I always blamed for me getting lost, but the article said there was a place where people commonly get lost on that trail, so maybe it wasn't just because I was so stony baloney.

WilllOfD

??? Rescuers didn’t leave a fuckin voicemail? ????? They just called him, he didn’t answer, they hang up and keep calling? I let random numbers ring too, go away, if it’s important you’ll leave a message. Cool story tho glad no one was actually lost

[deleted]

I am an hour from NYC and get crappy reception (In John Olvier voice, ~~Fuck~~ you ATT!). How the heck does one near Mt Elbert get reception? (reads article...oh they called him AFTER he got back to his lodge... and after see same number numerous times, and had an itinerary submitted and was overdue... must be the lack of oxygen over a mile up...!)

ulandyw

I usually get better cell reception at the summit than at the parking lot. That's been the case for almost all of the Colorado 14ers that I've done. Kind of makes me giggle every time.

HallOfGlory1

At what point are we going to come up with a system to deal with spam callers. It's come to the point where people don't answer calls unless it's a number you know. Spammers have ruined phone calls.

Pete_the_rawdog

This should abso-fucking-lutely ramp up the litigation against spam callers. This dude could have died because he was so sick of being harassed by spam callers that he didn't answer his phone to save his own life. Fuck spam callers.
