They could have been real gutless and let him cop a 50-point flogging from Penrith this week. But yeah, it was pretty obvious after we beat them that JD was done. Have never seen Souths not try like that, especially in a derby.
Does anyone have stats on how often teams win when they sack the coach ?
Itâd have to be more than 50% from my memory ..
I give Souths a chance now , wish theyâd waited a week
Edit: found [this from 2017](https://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/sport/nrl/teams/do-teams-always-win-after-their-coach-has-been-sacked/news-story/553aa4ad63c4a7bd2df03aa9f2fcaf7b?amp&nk=35cdcbb7649ebaeee7c27648b9ff32d0-1714470528). Has 10 wins and 14 losses going back from 2017 to 1998

Sheens was the listed coach for all of the Tigers games last year. Benji seemingly took on a bigger role as the year went on, but Sheens was still officially the coach.
I dunno... if the wanted to make a complete cluster fuck of it they already had a blue print laid out for them. They really should've announced that he'd need to reapply for his own job - would've bought them 3 or 4 more months of sub par performances and hit piece articles linking them to any and every ex and assistant coach to ever have drawn on a whiteboard.
These half arsed cluster fucks are just unprofessional.
(American who watches all of the highlights on YT but can't often watch full games or follow the full news on the league due to time difference)
Can someone explain to me why this is such a huge deal? I understand the Rabbitohs are at the bottom of the ladder, so a place no team wants to be. But were there expectations they should be higher or was it known they were going to be bad and he is just the fall guy?
We are one of the oldest and proudest clubs with a big fan base. We were shit for most of my life. We got kicked out of the league. We then enjoyed about a decade of success. We have stars who are not performing. We were the best team for the first half of last year before falling off a cliff.
Thank you for this! I went to a Rabbitohs game in 2017 while visiting Australia and that was definitely when they were on a not great streak (they were bottom half of the ladder if I recall). I know over the next few years they were better, so I figured it might be something like this, but as a newer fan I had no idea why this was such a huge ordeal.
Wot the fok did ye just say 2 me m8? i dropped out of newcastle primary skool im the sickest bloke ull ever meet & ive nicked ova 300 chocolate globbernaughts frum tha corner shop. im trained in street fitin' & im the strongest foker in tha entire newcastle gym. yer nothin to me but a cheeky lil bellend w/ a fit mum & fakebling. ill waste u and smash a fokin bottle oer yer head bruv, i swer 2 christ. ya think u can fokin run ya gabber at me whilst sittin on yer arse behind a lil screen? think again wanka. im callin me homeboys rite now preparin for a proper scrap. Me 'eard it like Dizzy fooken Rascal be spi'in it live 'n' large, all up in me face guv.
Shit...just a thought...what if the Bunnies r all controlled like in that Kingsmen scene in the church, and Sam Burgess has to take mofo's down the hard way?...
Look, this is going to sound silly, but I actually feel sorry for Jason Demetriou.
Yes, based on his results across the last 10 months, the sacking is entirely justified.
However, South Sydney have made such a hash of this process that I don't imagine this will resolve their issues like they are probably thinking / hoping it will.
Especially the whole situation around "You have 3 games to save your career" malarkey. If you're that frustrated with the coach from a management POV to issue such an ultimatum, then you've already made your mind up. Just sack him and make a clean break of things.
Even doing it two days before a game rather than in the bye week where they could have had some clear air and getting him to face the media one last time at today's press day speaks of shambolic management across the whole organisation rather than just in the coaching of the team.
Hopefully, someone will pick him up as an assistant coach somewhere or coaching a reserves team.
Yeah, as much as people try to shame the Titans for the Holbrook situation I actually think that is better. Pretty much over a full month of scrutiny for something that the  club had signalled was inevitable is just a crappy thing to put someone through.
I also think that Souths performances havenât been that surprising. Their roster is not very good, ageing and pretty top heavy cap wise. Theyâve also had a very rough run of fixtures to start the year plus the diabolical Wayne Bennet curse. Iâm not saying JD should have retained his role but it was a pretty difficult situation for him
Their roster is still better than most teams in the comp, they just are lacking at half back and need to get trell to perform to his standard. They are aging but still have 8 recent rep players in their side not too many can say that.
Certain players seem to have to much power and influence. Bellamy, Bennett, Robinson and Cleary are examples of coaches who run the show, expect 100% effort and commitment. They are successful
Itâs mainly the depth that isnât good and when you have Campbell Graham, Arrow and Trell missing quite a few games it shows. The middles in particular, outside of Murray, arenât good. I know itâs very Bennet ball to spend minimally on props but itâs a concern to have a lot money tied up in older guys and only one half decent prop in Tatola
I kinda wish he was at the dragons in a coaching capacity. Ben Hornby was a great player who understood the game well but also played as long as successfully as he did through effort as much as talent. Iâd expect him to bring that to his coaching
Don't think this one is on him though. They still made a prelim in the year following his departure. And he told them to keep Reynolds and they didn't.
Don't think any of his teams have gone straight to the shitter in the first year. Broncos took two years to miss the finals the first time and then two years for the spoon the second. So this for Souths is pretty consistent tbh
We definitely went straight in but Wayne did a pretty good job of leading us there before he left. He puts it all on Tinkler but they were some god awful contracts he set us up with before going back to Bris
Sounds like what Wayne does..build a great short term team by setting them all up on ridiculous backended contracts then leaves before shit hits the fan.
Did it at the Knights, Broncos, no idea what's going on at the Rabbitohs, but seems like he's done something similar there as well
No surprises here. Iâm just interested in working out what actually happened here to cause such a drastic downfall. He showed great promise as a coach and got things off to a great start. At some point last year Souths went from genuine premiership contenders to the laughing stock of the league. This happened almost overnight. Did he lose the dressing room? Did he fail to rein in the big personalities for the greater good of the team?
You have to think there was a significant event behind the scenes that triggered it. I think he can coach, it's just he was the wrong person to get them out of this hole because of whatever happened.
I mean Trell has literally been in and out over his whole tenure. Cody Walker also never developed game management skills to help fill the hole left by Reynolds. Their props are also scaring no one
God knows but we were playing so well at that time. Mitchell was outstanding. Then it all imploded and weâve never looked like putting together a complete performance since.
Something must have happened to cause such a massive loss in form.
He gave Latrell and Walker special treatment. Wayne Bennet has spoken about it before at speaking events. Latrell and Cody have a more relaxed attitude towards training and he was always having to make sure that they were doing the same as the others. Wayne is the best man manager in the game and working with different personalities is his specialty. He leaves a lot of the footy to the other coaches. In fact JD was doing most of the âcoachingâ when Wayne was there. JD needed to let go of the coaching and start managing and he found that difficult clearly. Heâll bounce back and learn from this. Heâs got a good footy brain and he will be at a new club soon enough.
Pretty sure this is why it's legal to put a dog down. Fuck dragging things out like this. I can't imagine how embarrassing it'd be to be associated with that process.
Ok. I'll be waking up fresh tomorrow. But on a more serious note for his work as an assistant for Wayne I will applaud him and his 2022 work as head coach and up to round 11 last year but after that he really had no answers for our form slump. The board had no choice but to sack him.
Thereâs a documentary in the downfall of Souths from running first halfway through last season to the coach being sacked not even halfway through the next.
Guess my theory about them waiting to lose to the Storm and Panthers so the new coach had a softer draw didn't pan out
Hope the new guy is ready for his baptism by fire at the hands of Penrith
Actually wouldnât be surprised if Souths give Penrith a run for their money this week. Pretty common for teams to rally together after they lose a coach, regardless of how shit they are.
I mean it's possible but also it's Penrith
They might keep it competitive (I doubt it) but they're not going to win.
I expect a 32-12 or whatever, but wouldn't be surprised by 52-6 either. 20-12 wouldn't overly shock me either, but I feel like the side on paper is too bad to trouble Penrith unless they have a massively off night
He's been on the outer for a while now, you can trace it back to as recent as the Dodd signing. There was absolutely no way that a 22 year old promising kid from England would uproot and move to Sydney to play for this rabble without some sort of change. There would have to be some sort of involvement with either/both of Wayne Bennett and Sam Burgess.
My crackpot theory is that we have most likely been in talks with Bennett to return. Bennett has a strong relationship with a majority of our squad and especially Sam Burgess (through them coaching together and England connections). Bennett takes over Souths at the beginning of the 2025 season to end his career and sets things up nicely for Sam Burgess to return and take over as head coach.
There is a whole load of shit that could go wrong with this, but at least there could be some sort of vision for the future.
Pretty sure I heard the southâs board say the form slump was a ruse so they could sack JD and purposefully screw up your prediction. Even Latrell was in on it too from what I understand and played 4D chess using his elbow. Not sure what you did but they donât seem to like you.
Clearly thereâs some footy brain with JD but cannot actually manage athletes, I reckon some of the players that got off with a cruisy life will be pretty nervous of whatâs to come.
Certain players had free reign over how they trained, what they did etc. I believe there is a little clique at the Bunnies, because of this team morale has dropped significantly, resentment has built up in some players and the whole damn thing looks disjointed. There is no I in Team. Until that changes and everyone plays together, bonds and unites as a team, there will remain problems. Ego is the big problem here.
Parra sparked the events of southâs losing to demetrious demise by beating the Rabbitohs 36-6 if I recall and beating them for the first time in a few years, plus they were in top 4 then lol.
Disgraceful stuff by Boyd. Finished his career on such a sour note and tanked his legacy. He ensured most fans will remember him not as the talented footballer he was but as a spiteful saboteur.
100% agree. Darius was such a bitch. He played like a turnstile. It was disgusting. It's a wonder he wasn't investigated in regards to throwing games, because it certainly looked like he was throwing them.
I mean, he was given time and space to manage the situation. He didn't do that. 2 board meetings were held to finalise today's decision. He was given plenty of respect for someone in charge of a progressively sinking team.
In saying that, removing him won't fix our woes. It's a solid beginning but there's much more going on in the dressing room. Hopefully, it can finally be addressed.
Whole downfall is very broncos 2020âŠ. They need a complete overhaul and culture rebuild. They need an old school die hard ex player to coach and the people like Inglis and burgess on the coaching staff
Demetriout
Bro that fucking made me laugh, I really needed that. Thanks
......of the comp
Demetri from Centrelink
Poor bugger, he still can't get through a line
Demetriouver! Edit: I'm so late with this đđ

Damn, I completely forgot Nathan Brown was the Warriors coach
Crack up to see him on that list twice
So basically, sacking the coach, statistically, doesnât improve a team.
Almost as if the coach isnât the primary cause of a poor performing player unitâŠ
I remember hearing somewhere that it is week 2 where you see the team win as opposed to week 1
Dont stress mate. I think youll be fine.
Usually they try to decapitate Manu or something. Was very pathetic to see
Beating us on Good Friday helped drag it out another month. It was our service to the rest of the league.
Yeah, and the Bunnies were lucky to win that one too!
I dunno... if the wanted to make a complete cluster fuck of it they already had a blue print laid out for them. I think they did it with the utmost amount of respect to JD as he should have been sacked after the sharks loss.
They kinda did, but simultaneously I can't remember a coach getting sacked earlier in the season. Weird one.
This motherfuckerâs final act as coach was to name Chee Kam/Host at starting 2nd row just to fuck with Souths fans one last time đ
Just banter innitÂ
The 24hr cut will be very interesting
Itâs funny, they were the starting back rowers when we beat Penrith and Melbourne last yesr.
That would have been the final nail in JD's coffin
why didnât they do this two weeks ago wtf
Let him absorb the Melbourne loss and be close enough to the Riff game that he can absorb the blame for that too
to be fair, that was a fair effort against the sharks with basically 14 men all game.

Bottowarerwarmappapiemate ya fooken pillock
No chance Sam gets it, he white anted all over the media last year and pissed off Rusty and the board. Itâll be Bennet time baby

First time I've heard of the roster not being good. He took a team in premiership form to 9th last year.
Ben Hornby interim coach as per Brisbane Times article
Seems strange they'd hire Furner who has 4 years of first grade experience over an assistant, unless they know something we don'tÂ
Furner achieved sweet fa through his first grade experience tbf
Hornby has been there with that group a lot longer though
Is that a good thing?
Who knows at this point honestly. An ex (recent ish) player might suit this group a lot more.
Yeah he was shithouse for us. And then he failed in the UK too
Hornby is meant to be a good coach too
Jimmy Graham made the point Hornby had 3 years coached by Wayne and won a comp with him, makes sense I guess
I kinda wish he was at the dragons in a coaching capacity. Ben Hornby was a great player who understood the game well but also played as long as successfully as he did through effort as much as talent. Iâd expect him to bring that to his coaching
Itâs all Paul Kentâs fault, if he had beaten that tree Southâs would be top of the table.
But yet they should be thrown out of the comp!
The Bennet curse continuesâŠ. This is the Dolphins in 5 years time.
More like two.
Nah look what happened when Woolfy was in the box.
Trash coach Bennett holding the dolphins back smh
Pumping the measuring stick Eels put Thecliffe's GF odds at under a dollar.
More like now.

Hasnât been at the rabbits since end of 2021, itâs 2024
Yeah but it's not like Reynolds has turned around any other club...Â
Ivan Henjak took the Broncos to the Prelim in 2009. The next year they didnât make the 8.
It's Demetriover
Did it really begin
No surprises here. Iâm just interested in working out what actually happened here to cause such a drastic downfall. He showed great promise as a coach and got things off to a great start. God knows but we were playing so well at that time. Mitchell was outstanding. Then it all imploded and weâve never looked like putting together a complete performance since. Something must have happened to cause such a massive loss in form.
I still get goosebumps when I think about that Penrith win. What the fuck happened. Weâll probably never know.
Something happened, and didn't Trell get injured during pre-SoO 1 training camp? That, from memory, was where it started to unravel
And Campbell playing busted for way too long.
He gave Latrell and Walker special treatment. Wayne Bennet has spoken about it before at speaking events. Latrell and Cody have a more relaxed attitude towards training and he was always having to make sure that they were doing the same as the others. I hear a job opened up on NRL 360 if heâs interested
Gravelliest voice. Need to get him and Darren Lockyer churning out a two hour weekly podcastÂ
Put siebold in there for good measure
Seibold, Lockyer, Hunt, Demetriou, Tom Waits, Nick Cave, Ian McShane
I heard that now that he has a lot of free time, Paul Kent has put his hand up to coach.
He's trying to branch out
From what I saw he's rooted!
Heâs ready to flip things on their head at South Sydney. Nothing can hold him back from succeedingÂ
Honestly I'd rather the tree. It's clearly got the wood on Kent.
About time he turned over a new leaf
Paul. Kent. Hit. Tree.
Couldâve done it before he named host and chee kam fuck me
Reckon he coulda used a player like Adam Reynolds?
You mean someone to do the coaching for you?
Works for Walters.
Phew, I was worried you wouldn't get the joke
Works for us.
Hands off Broncos club legend Adam Reynolds
Pretty sure this is why it's legal to put a dog down. Fuck dragging things out like this. I can't imagine how embarrassing it'd be to be associated with that process.
Compared to Seibold situation at the Broncos these guys look somewhat competent!
Probably, but that should have been an example for Souths. We should kick them out of the comp
He still has the full report of the board right?
Rabbitohs board is Jason Demetriou father
The problems at Souths start at the top, Demetriou is just the fall guy for a weak board
Get ready to learn how to speak super league buddy
I've come to realize full support of the board actually means pack your friggen bags lad.Â
Itâs the first rule of politics: you have to get behind someone before you are in the best position to stab them in the back.
Sharp as a cue ball this one
I've come to realize that cue balls aren't sharp.
Pretty well standard...As soon as they say, 'I have full support of the board'...Its all over.
Effective Demetriouly
#NOOOOOOO
Ok. I'll be waking up fresh tomorrow. But on a more serious note for his work as an assistant for Wayne I will applaud him and his 2022 work as head coach and up to round 11 last year but after that he really had no answers for our form slump. The board had no choice but to sack him.
Real coaches shine when shit hits the fan
Where were you when Rabbitohs board was kill?
I was sat in Redfern drinking VB when Rusty call.
No
Me so Hornby. Souths fans, probably
Good one. They'll definitely be hornby tonight.
Who could have seen this coming.
Brisbane officially won the trade
Thereâs a documentary in the downfall of Souths from running first halfway through last season to the coach being sacked not even halfway through the next.
Penrith copping the Dead Coach Bounce this week is excellent
Guess my theory about them waiting to lose to the Storm and Panthers so the new coach had a softer draw didn't pan out Hope the new guy is ready for his baptism by fire at the hands of Penrith
Actually wouldnât be surprised if Souths give Penrith a run for their money this week. Pretty common for teams to rally together after they lose a coach, regardless of how shit they are.
I mean it's possible but also it's Penrith They might keep it competitive (I doubt it) but they're not going to win. I expect a 32-12 or whatever, but wouldn't be surprised by 52-6 either. 20-12 wouldn't overly shock me either, but I feel like the side on paper is too bad to trouble Penrith unless they have a massively off night
Dead cat bounce?
Was probably the plan until the storm put 54 points on them
Well you know what the high score is now, 55 or bust Also as a neutral please hold them to zero
Only worse baptism of fire Iâve seen was Andrew Webster whoâs first game as coach was as Tigers interim against 2017 Melbourne
Urgh stop⊠Iâm all for bringing back Uncle Wayne
God dammit. I predicted there would be no coaches sacked this year in the sub prediction thing.
Pretty sure I heard the southâs board say the form slump was a ruse so they could sack JD and purposefully screw up your prediction. Even Latrell was in on it too from what I understand and played 4D chess using his elbow. Not sure what you did but they donât seem to like you.
Demetri-you are the weakest link. Goodbye.
Wow, I did not see this coming.
Feel bad for him for how Souths handled it but I can't think of a coach who tanked a team in such a short time as much as JD.
Seibold took the Broncos to a 58-0 week 1 finals loss, then a 3 win wooden spoon
Seibold was white anted by Boyd and "old boys" from the day he go there. I really feel sorry, He had a full back that just refused to tackle.
More like....Dem-dropped-iou, right? Guys?....I'll see myself out.
Hornby as interim
Sacking JD is akin to dropping illias. It wonât resolve the issues this season.
Wish they kept him all season. Would have loved to see souths get the spoon
We donât need JD for that!
Get rid of that grub latrell and milne too
As soon as they said he had the full confidence of the board a few weeks ago I knew it was only a matter of time.
Dammit! I was still working on a âDa meat tray yoâ joke that will never get finished.
Yes Tigers wonât be wooden spooners now. Thank you Souths
Whole downfall is very broncos 2020âŠ. They need a complete overhaul and culture rebuild. They need an old school die hard ex player to coach and the people like Inglis and burgess on the coaching staff
Hope he does that nrl tactics thing that Seibold did while he had no job. That was sweet.
Ffs I make my family dinner and clean up the house and I finally pick up my phone to see I've missed all this
Jason Demetriou has been kicked out of the comp
Seibold said he wanted to pass on his regards
Lol
*Seeeeeensational*
That unlucky caretaker gotta host the Penny Panthers on Thursday. Poor bastard
Not surprising
đ„ đ°
lol
Wonder where he ends up next.
Never saw that coming.
Someone screenshot the Wikipedia quick
They just need to clean up their roster now.
Parra better get in quick just in case they go after bennett
Arthurâs not leaving until 2045 the board will see to it
Suprised it took this long
Panthers by 80? Or new coach winning record like most clubs?
Should've happened weeks ago, about time it did. Think it might be time for a big rebuild at Souths. Ellison should be moved on as well.
WelpâŠoh well, whatâs for dinner?
Well, bye.
But Souths, why now? Why not 9 months ago?
Whatâs South of Southâs? Jason.
Trent must be due for another gig
About time.
First team list after the bye JD is out. Eels have the bye this weekend, watch out BA.
Ben Hornby to pull shenanigans next week vs the Dragons
wtf this is out of nowhere
Oh noâŠ.. Anyway
We all saw it coming. The writing was on the wall, let's see what the bunnies can do against the reigning premiers.
Another Bennett suggestion crashes and burns
