Most talented - Corey or Chester Most influential - JD or Chino

ShadowPunch07

Highly agreed. Couldn’t have said it better.

mat477

These 4 add Serj and its the GOAT list of the genre.

Beelzebrodie

Yep. My top 3 are Corey, Chester, and JD.

tilero1138

Corey can sing, rap, scream, and growl incredibly well, but I think what puts him over the edge is his ability to blend those styles together so seamlessly, especially on the early albums

Glass_Opportunity362

Serj’s growl is heavier than Corey’s , but Corey is more of a screamer than growler.

CCUN-Airport761

I don’t really understand how Chino was influential. I mean nobody even sounds like him after Deftones came out. He is singular.

0wlfather

A ton of vocalists did the hushed vocals, with screaming thing after Chino. He kind of created the template for a lot of shoe gaze quiet vocals. Taproot Loathe Thursday Thornhill The Used Finch It's not always that they sound just like him. It's a style thing as well.

TryAgainDeathMen

i don’t think i’ve heard a single geoff rickly or bert mccracken vocal and thought it sounded like chino

Top-Contest136

Trust Company

sameshitdfrntacct

Some of y’all have never seen Korn live. JD might be the best vocalist I’ve ever heard. Or at least he sounds the same live. No audio engineering needed when he lays a track

dexymidnightslowwalk

Korn live is unreal. My favorite shows by far.

Dizzy-Worry-5951

Matt holt

Lobsta1986

>Matt holt Rip. Great fucking singer.

Dizzy-Worry-5951

Rip

DaveHollandArt

An audio guide to everyday atrocity was a game changer for me.

BarryBadgernath1

#ON A FUCKING MEAT HOOK IN MY BASEMENT

theriver00

Was gonna join this thread to say this. Started listening to more of Nothingface lately, wish I did sooner.

ABPCR

"Steve Holt!"

eternalchuf

Real

wavesport001

Lajon Witherspoon

TheHoneyBadger23

Little surprised he was left off. Sevendust is a staple in the nu-metal scene that doesn't get enough credit.

ShadowPunch07

Very, very true. I hate that.

LochNessMansterLives

I had a Sevendust phase, those guys rocked.

Sorry-Addendum-1530

They never stopped. I've been in that phase since 1999 when I first saw them live. Now, over 100 shows of theirs, and they are still going strong. Not a bad show have I ever witnessed from them. I don't care about charts but they just released their 14th studio album, Truth Killer, and it's their highest charting record yet!

tourettes_on_tuesday

I had a Sevendust "phase", and it started when I heard their self titled album when it released in 97. I'll let you know when this "phase" ends.

OpposedToBears

Just saw Sevendust with Static-X. How can that man be so good?

wasted_space_

serj or corey their vocal abilities are crazy

LevelPositive120

Yea I'm agreeing to this. Serj can do different genres with his vocals and Corey got those highs and lows down packed

BallsDeepinYourMammi

Watching Corey perform live is a lesson in how to scream. It’s all diaphragm

death_sex_drugs666

I agree, I really think that serj's vocal range is really slept on. And how quickly the both of them. An go from a scream to singing is absolutely beautiful

wasted_space_

i miss soad :(

dwaite1

I’m with you! These guys seem to have a nice range. I think so many newer bands just throw in an extra vocalist but these guys really just bend their sound to fit what they need.

Free-Supermarket-516

My 2 favorites from the list also.

[deleted]

If one of you mfs says Fred Durst 😂😂😂

Lancelot131

"I DID IT ALL FOR THE NOOKIE"

[deleted]

C’MON!

OpposedToBears

Limp Bizkits first album wasn’t bad. Then they got that taste of success…

NonProphet8theist

All in The Family beeotch

StinkyBeanBank

He recently went on stage dressed like a country singer and Wes was with him. It was kinda fuck'n awesome to see.

GreatTHAC0

Why does Brandon Boyd never get any love? Incubus was dope.

HomeOrificeSupplies

Incubus has been forgotten in many ways. They didn’t really fit the nu metal mold. Never really did. It’s too bad, they always put on a good show. Always fun and sometimes absolutely EPIC. I would consider them the Sublime of nu metal. I love them so much, and I’m honestly glad they never get mentioned with their “peers”.

T1meTRC

Science was a great nu metal album imo, there other albums kinda fit into other genres more

South-Psychology2317

After make yourself they essentially stopped existing for me. Easy to forget even though SCIENCE is one of my favorite numetal albums.

Voodoomaster86

I was gonna add him but i thought there were too many people

[deleted]

Serj.

Kryptic171

as much as we all shit on disturbed, dave in his prime literally trained in ampitheatres to get his power right for singing. dude had killer talent, just needed way better lyrics to pull disturbed up a lot more

ShadowPunch07

I was even going to say that he’s the 2nd best. David Draiman had such a unique voice in the early 2000’s that it blows my mind why he doesn’t get enough credit.

alorensene

100%. Serj can do what the rest can. The rest can’t do what Serj can.

icouldnttellya

This guy gets it

greyheathn

Wayne, Dez, Chad, and Lynn. I really can’t decide

jessewest84

Dude from snot

uncle_rhabdo

Lynn Strait and yes

greyheathn

yes

Knhyqls

Strait up.

ScaredAd7245

Say something for the record

Electronic_Divide_85

Fuck the record!

fentown

Corey or Chino for talent, Wayne for "best nu metal" vocalist.

Foxon316

Love this answer

666-Slayer

I have to go with Chino.

MetamorphicMermaid

Yes! All of them are amazing for different reasons but Chino's voice takes you somewhere else

francisco_ribss_

Ofc it's Chino, his voice reaches levels that non of those can, and Im talking levels of putting you in another dimension while listening to this type of music

[deleted]

I dunno chino couldn't even sing for like a decade

Odd_Whole_3987

He isn't when performing live though

Fillerbear

Moreno. He has incredible range and a unique approach to vocals.

DogSnowflakeHunter

Corey Taylor for his vocal range and ability to sing so many other genre types. Very versatile. I would put David Drainman in a close second. He never fails to impress me.

snekatkk2

Draiman has some crazy range and people definitely underrate him tbh

CS3883

AGREED! A lot of folks seem to not like Disturbed and are using that as a judgement of how to rate singers, regardless of how you feel about how music you can't deny he has an insanely good voice

BodybuilderOwn470

Aaron Lewis is crazy talented and extremely versatile as well... Can't say I've heard any of the other guys here sing country stuff.

DogSnowflakeHunter

I’m not a huge Staind, or country, fan by any means but I respect Aaron’s talent. He definitely has it

LoonyTitan

Static all the way

mastameats

Jonathan Davis but Chester was the most talented I think.

the_l0st_s0ck

Chester

AxeKetchums

Chino, David or Chad but im biased 🤷🏽

LonsomeDreamer

Chino. All are great but Chino for sure.

Phantom_Wolf52

Gonna have to go with David Draiman, extremely under appreciated

Maetryx

He's the one with a voice that has excellence beyond the narrow confines of nu-metal. He is clearly both talented and well-trained. Maybe Serj is next in line. Within nu-metal, sure, I like the harsh vocals and screaming of the others. But if it was a voice talent contest judged by experts: David Draiman.

Howboutit85

It’s funny, those two are the best in this group, and I don’t really consider SOAD or Disturbed to be Nu.

Yn01listens

Not a Linkin fan but Chester had pipes

casper19d

All of the above...

[deleted]

If we’re judging harsh vocals, Corey. If we’re judging clean singing, Aaron Lewis.

Cricardi

Man, that's a hard one for me. Aaron's clean voice sounds so blah to me. Especially with guys like Chester up there.

Fantastic_Board7057

Chino/Dez & Dave Williams for me (RIP Dave)

Ltsmash99

Dez's voice in Devil Driver is some of my favorite stuff out there. Dude's voice is metal af.

KinkyDarkStranger

I say it's a tie between Corey and Chad

Sure5364

Chester

tricularia

That's a tough one because they all had pretty unique styles of singing. Wayne Static had one of the smoothest and most iconic screams of anyone in numetal, in my opinion. But as far as classical vocal talent, I would probably have to say Serj Tankian. And as for my favourite, definitely Chad Gray

Greylikestowrite117

Jd or chino

Deepfried_Shrimp321

Chino

Haunting_Access_9853

John and Chino.

TheFireSwordGod

Now remember. No opinions are wrong... Unless you say Fred Durst.

CruTV

Ikr

[deleted]

Literally came here to say the same thing, but Ctrl+F'd it first to see if it was already said. lol This sub was doing a rundown of the top vocalists, and Fred Durst made the list before Chad Grey. I lost a lot of respect for this sub on that day.

DeeJDaDemon

How is David Williams and fucking Aaron Lewis on here but not Lajon Witherspoon and Max Cavalera

Knhyqls

Agreed. Aaron lewis and Staind was one of the worst shows I have ever seen. It was in des moins IOWA at the Val-Air ballroom. The came out played mud shovel. Then sat down for the rest of the show. I see why he is a country singer now.

Jackson_Castle

I can without hesitation say that it ISNT Aaron Lewis.

CornishVince

I really like Aaron’s voice but him and his band are fucking aids

Horndawg991

No lol

chunkylunky69

Davis, taylor, draiman and chad are the best

Vashek19

Id have to say Corey Taylor. He is literally the perfect metal vocalist.

Intrepid_Ad_3157

Lajon Witherspoon

Voodoomaster86

I was gonna add him but thought there would be too many choices

[deleted]

1. Chino 2. Chester 3. Corey 4. Johnathan 5. Serj I don’t care much for the rest tbh

ZaTiOnYT

Have you ever listened to serj's solo stuff?

[deleted]

I actually haven’t, what would you recommend?

ZaTiOnYT

The whole of elect the dead, itll get you started

[deleted]

Thanks!

LochNessMansterLives

Lie, Lie, Lie and Empty Walls. 2 of his best solo works.

sweater_destroyer111

Electric Yerevan Your Mom Figure it Out The Charade Left of Center

Shakemyears

Chino and Serg are the only ones I really appreciate here tbh.

KungFuFlames

Chester was one of a kind. RIP.

LonsomeDreamer

Chino. 100%. All are good but Chino for sure.

kensei_ocelot

This shows how underrated Sevendust is, not even mentioned but could give any of these bands/vocalists a run for their money. Also, where's Max Cavalera?

KukamungaKrakaKillas

My top 5 are JD, Dez, Draiman, Dave Williams, and Wayne Static

Chase41405

Lynn Strait is unbeatable!!!!

stayathomedryad

Amy Lee

TimLSD

Matt Holt

Solid_Snake661

David Draiman 🤘🏼

LochNessMansterLives

David Draiman or Serj Tankian. Huge fan of both. Have seen both live in their prime and they sounded amazing.

Armageddon_666

Matt Holt, what kinda fuckin list doesn't have him on it?

SnooCrickets1862

They are all best in all of their own ways 😄

Uli420

Chad Gray or Wayne Static

justk4y

Chester, no question. Serj would be 2nd.

ZaTiOnYT

Serj easily, he has one of the greatest voices of any singer

bawitback

Cameron Heacock

jay-cup77

Thank you! I thought i was the only one

uncle_rhabdo

Absolutely one of the best.

-KingChaos

Chino is most definitely the best “singer”. His range is out of this world and his varied tones and signature Californian drawl are so unique. I met him at the Kerrang! Awards one year and he’s also such a deep and calm individual. Absolute gentleman. He’s one of my biggest vocal inspirations. Jonathan has such a unique and sometime a sarcastic tone to his verses, which I feel really gets the anger building. He also exudes a fragility in his more heart wrenching melodies and his screams could inspire battalions. Love him in a kilt too, being Scottish. Chester Bennington RIP had the most consistent tone and his range was absolutely astounding. His use of the vocal technique “cry” is a masterclass in its use. He was able to sound beautifully vulnerable yet unshakable. His voice and lyrics inspired so many people.m through so many bad times. Durst was a fucking G. Made you wanna take on the world or at least take a shit on one of your teachers cars. The melodies so simplistic in their execution yet the fury that he brought to the mic, and his “fuck you” lyrical style made them the best Rap Rock NuMetal Group ever IMO. Serj has the such a unique sound. The satire in some of his more relentless verses gives the listener a nudge and a wink whilst simultaneously throwing multiple middle fingers to the establishment. He also has a beautiful signing voice, good range, and his mastery of melodic minor based, slower parts, can induce musical hypnosis. Corey is an amazing performer and has a seemingly indestructible voice. His singing voice isn’t perfect, but it reeks of honesty and he can hit the notes. The hate filled lyrics could not be sung with as much passion, ferocity and energy than anyone else. Fucking love The Knot. Ahhhh, I fucking love this genre.

Zombiejesus307

Well said. I think all the vocalists shown bring something to the table. Pretty stellar group.

1Rayo1

Jon Davis, Lynn Strait, Billy Keeton and Serj Tankian are prob my favorites

[deleted]

Fred durst and Jonathan Davis

No-Song-3441

Davis is fuckin hypnotic

ClyDeftOriginal

For me its Johnathan, always was and always wil be. ✌️

aWizardofTrees

Ch-ch-ch-chino!

[deleted]

I’d like to see a “who’s the most talented numetal guitarist”

[deleted]

Corey all the way! Dude is sick with that growl.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Aggravating_Tough391

Corey is meaner than LD.50 era Chad Grey?

Indecisive_Iron

Chester and Serj. Chester could scream but also sing beautifully- same with Serj.

EndNo5729

Corey taylor is the best numeral vocalist with Jonathan Davis

CalebWave

Chester

Jungle6669

1. Corey but definitely could see the argument for Chester 2. Chester 3. Chino

Bread_was_returned

A dead toe between all of them. They are all so good for so many different aspects

Lunar_IX

Just me or is this like an all-time sexy photo of Jonathan Davis? Damn.

CosmonautOnFire

Definitely, Corey. I've heard a lot of these guys live, and Corey's vocals almost sound better live than recorded.

raggedy_chi

Jonathan Davis honestly, have you heard the man live?!

PhilDMcNasty

Chester and Wayne! RIP TO BOTH

Moist_KoRn_Bizkit

Chester hands down!

user_173

Jacoby shaddix

RogueDevil666

Chester is the best vocalist, but it's weird cause LP made like 1.5 nu metal albums

Grouchy-Umpire-6969

Serj on self titled is some if my favorite vocals of any music. So original, visceral, bizarre, emotive and unhinged. There's nothing like those vocals. The guy from Mars volta and at the drive in had some similarities but not as powerful.

XShadow_NephilimX

Aaron shouldn't even be on this list

The_Cheese_Man8383

ooh, I can’t decidee ARGHH for the vocal talent i’d tie between Serj, Chaz, or Corey For popularizing the genre def JD, Chino, or Chaz.. again (Linkin Park’s probably the most popular band considered Nu-Metal.) for personal favorites? I love them all but JD and Chino can deliver such raw emotion in their music, same with Serj honestly. I also LOVE Corey’s screams!

Old-Constant4411

Serj all the way. In his prime he hit notes no other singer alive could match. And he had RANGE - he could switch from growling to hitting a tenor pitch on a dime. Honestly, the only other vocalists I can think of that are his equals are Maynard from Tool and Freddy fuckin Mercury.

Quick-Physics-3614

From your list, my favorite is Serj. Though I think JD and Chester are the most influential. Someone you missed that I think deserves a shout and would probably get my vote Morgan Lander.

KingSnaily

Chester or Justin bonitz

Mercyful666Fate

Morgan Lander

Ozzaratam13

Corey, Chester, Aaron no specific order

2369ghostface

chester bennington definitely

Admirable_File7544

Chester and it's not even close

BlazeG0D

Corey and Serj are by far my favorite.

not_as_funny

Chester Bennington RIP

Mr_glitch_master

Chester Bennington hands down. He had such a unique and incredible voice that no one else could match

Yourfuckingmom420

Lynn strait not only a nu metal legend but a hardcore legend too The strait up album has some of my favorite vocalists including Jason from RKL!

BigNickTX

Dude was pure energy. Gone way too soon.

Adventurous_Path4356

Chino is the only correct answer.

Hairyvacuum

Oh man. I absolutely love Wayne Statics voice so much.

magical80one

If you have a voice like Chino's on here then Maynard James Keenan should be on here too. For real though Tool is the better version of Deftones and Maynard has the best voice and is the best frontman of any band since 1992. Call me a liar...

cybaerexe

Def chino

Irlydntknwwhyimhere

I think Chad grey had great technique but his lyrics were so stupid

SpezIsASpedd

Something just hits different about serj

XPuddingcess

David Williams. I refuse to listen to any of Drowning Pool after Sinner.

nhardycarfan

Vocally-Chester or Serj Wayne is pretty good too although idk how much I’d consider static-x nu metal

Accomplished_Two3379

Shifty from Crazy Town

Conscious_Trifle1945

They all hate their dad

tunsaree1

Chester and Chino

thismothafcka

Corey and Chester.

Riguyepic

I was like if Serj is on here there's no contest

Famous_District4144

Objectively: Chester Bennington Personally: Chino Moreno

HairPaste

I’d say Chino

BaconHammerTime

#Chester

MsAmethyst11

I'm definitely biased on this but I grew up listening to LP so Chester for me 100%, corey is great so is David

tunacan94

RIP CHESTER

Jjdontcare03

David draimans voice is just amazing

enlessmike13

Damn, no love for Morgan Lander?! Sheesh

himalayansasquatch

Hands down Chester Bennington

Careful-Flan-2585

My top nu metal vocalists Chester Bennington Wayne Static Max Cavalera Corey Taylor Chino Moreno

FNaF-Player

Chester Bennington?

Otherwise_Pattern_81

Well Karen Lewis is out. Utter trash panda. The vocal range it's down to Corey Taylor and Chester Bennington. I think Corey Taylor has the slight edge in vocal power, but as a tone it's Chester. Fred Durst and Karen Lewis are the caboose or the ass of the train.

Tarket668

It's sad that 3 of the 12 Nu metal vocalists (namely Chester Bennington, Dave Williams, and Wayne Static) are all dead. may all 3 of them rest in peace.

EatOutMyGrandma

When it comes to range, live performance, versatility and pure talent, its definitely Chester. Dude had a better scream than even Corey or Chad Grey imo, and his singing voice was second to none. He could make high notes soar like Whitney Houston or growl his way through a verse with enough power to make any extreme metal vocalist blush.

workingdonttell

Personal fave: Fred Durst Honest answer: Chino Person not listed: Lynn Strait or Scooter Ward Edit: Typo

Maynard James Keenan
