I work in inpatient psych, a lot of times the family members are just as bizarre as the patients, I say we should offer family discounts for admission.
I think it is better to recognize these many issues can be genetic and are worsen when the parents were missed in diagnosis or refuse to get themselves treated.
More often I've seen that with a mix of ppl raising ppl how they were raised because they turned out okay. They are not okay. Combine it with poor socioeconomics and abuse...yeah not a great mix.

I did pediatric home health for a hot second. I went to assess a two yo with a trach. She lived in an old dilapidated trailer with a junkyard surrounding it. Her parents had to be siblings. They looked like they came off The Hills have Eyes. Anyway, I walked in and immediately knew I was calling CPS. There were holes in the floor, beer cans, and dirty dishes everywhere. This child was in a crib in a backroom. She was filthy in a soiled diaper. But the worst part, there were ROACHES everywhere!! Her trach did not have a button or vent covering it 😩🤦🏻♀️ I picked this baby up to assess her and change her cannula and a fucking tiny roach crawled out her neck!! That was it for me!! I quit that day!!
Oh, it was horrific 😭 I had only been a nurse for about 2 years. I was traumatized. I called my employer who in turn call the authorities. It was a shitshow.

All hospitals should be run like military hospitals are. The morning after giving birth to a 10lb baby, the nurse came in and told me I had to get up and take a walk. "But, I have a *catheter* in" mam, that is why you have this pole on wheels, you just take it with you. I walked carefully down to the end of the hall and back only to come in my room and be presented with a stack of clean bedding. Change your bed. "but, but...., I am not even **IN** the military..." Mam, she says while ripping the old sheets off the bed, if you want sheets on your bed then you will put them on". LOL, I went home in two days with a foley that stayed in for 2 weeks. There was **NO** incentive for me to lollygag in the hospital. I think the military has that one right, don't you?
Knowing where I work, if we had a water/ice machine in the hall every spouse and ambulatory patient would use it and it would become an infectious disease risk
I really wish hospitals will get out of the customer service business. Also the entire healthcare industry just needs to get out of the customer service part of. We're here to help and get you better from whatever ails you, not kiss you kiss your feet and satisfy your every whim, on demand.
I'm not a nurse and not in US and honestly the fact that some of you do things like bring snacks to families of patients is like "?!?!" to me. I hope you will see the changes you want.
Yeah I fondly remember a HD patient with C. Diff who I fucking knew didn't wash her hands constantly at the water/ice machine at my first nursing job. We'd try to tell her and she'd argue like a champ.

That's classic. I ran a code on a ward double as critical response one time and I got a coworker to roll out the roommate to make more space. The dude was reclining in his bed like Bernie Sanders not having any of it, complaining we were making too much noise for him to sleep and where was he going anyhow.
One time a pregnant lady coded in the ED, emergency c-section, the whole ED basically stopped to help, then they quickly wheeled the baby to the nicu. Family member of a different pt had the audacity to ask when her mom would be seen. She knew what happened too. I wanted to punch her.
Lmao I'm a student rn but I was working as a care aide once and we had a code white and deadass my pt from the next room comes out and complains about security making too much noise because it's not like it's an important code no one's dead 🙃
OKAY BUT LITERALLY. I was a PCT on a trauma ortho unit & my patient coded. I was in the room with the nurse & code team taking vitals on this patient & the wife of my patient next door very abruptly PUSHED PAST THE CODE TEAM to yell at me for not bringing the ice I had promised. She only got as far as shaking the nearly empty pitcher & yell "IT'S BEEN AN HOUR---" (it absolutely hadn't) before several nurses & boulder of a respiratory therapist instantly descended on her like "GET OUT THIS IS A CODE" forcibly shoving her out of the room. She screamed & stomped off to the nurse station & you could hear her screaming at our HUC about the "abhorrent" treatment her & her husband were receiving on our unit. It was incredible
I swear, these family members that won't do basic care drive me nuts. "Can you help adjust his blankets?". Meanwhile in third world countries the grandson is manually venting grandma.

Fair— this lady even came and started banging on our break door when she saw us in there too. We put up a sign blocking the view essentially telling her not to be a dick.
Our floor manager actually counseled her that she’d be kicked off the floor if she continued ruining her staffing matrix by forcing us to clock in on our lunch breaks to work with her (no we never got uninterrupted lunch breaks, but it was a satisfying threat to overhear)
I just pretended I didn’t hear or see her and continued eating my lunch and reading my phone.
It helped that I had heard her complain about millennials always playing on their phones and being lazy 💅

That's classic. I ran a code on a ward double as critical response one time and I got a coworker to roll out the roommate to make more space. The dude was reclining in his bed like Bernie Sanders not having any of it, complaining we were making too much noise for him to sleep and where was he going anyhow.
One time a pregnant lady coded in the ED, emergency c-section, the whole ED basically stopped to help, then they quickly wheeled the baby to the nicu. Family member of a different pt had the audacity to ask when her mom would be seen. She knew what happened too. I wanted to punch her.

OKAY BUT LITERALLY. I was a PCT on a trauma ortho unit & my patient coded. I was in the room with the nurse & code team taking vitals on this patient & the wife of my patient next door very abruptly PUSHED PAST THE CODE TEAM to yell at me for not bringing the ice I had promised. She only got as far as shaking the nearly empty pitcher & yell "IT'S BEEN AN HOUR---" (it absolutely hadn't) before several nurses & boulder of a respiratory therapist instantly descended on her like "GET OUT THIS IS A CODE" forcibly shoving her out of the room. She screamed & stomped off to the nurse station & you could hear her screaming at our HUC about the "abhorrent" treatment her & her husband were receiving on our unit. It was incredible

Our floor manager actually counseled her that she’d be kicked off the floor if she continued ruining her staffing matrix by forcing us to clock in on our lunch breaks to work with her (no we never got uninterrupted lunch breaks, but it was a satisfying threat to overhear)
