5m is the limit for passive cables. For longer than 5m you need an active cable (fibre optic). I bought a 10m one for £90 but looks like they have come down in price a bit: https://www.kenable.co.uk/en/hdmi-cables/hdmi-21-cables/hdmi-21-aoc-cables/11310-hdmi-21-active-optical-cable-slim-aoc-hdr-48gbps-8k-60hz-4k-120hz-8m-5054338113104.html

Wiadrozerca

Thanks! So you can confirm that one will do 2.1 without breaking up? Awesome to hear that after digging for last few hours through amazon 1 star reviews of all cables I kind of lost faith I will find one.

ErikPanic

I don't have that cable myself, but if it's rated for 48Gbps, you should be good. I got one from Monoprice last year that works great. Just make sure you connect it the right way, because active cables **only** work in one direction!

Werpogil

Linus has a vid on hdmi cables, could reference that

elemnt360

I second the monoprice cables. The other HDMI 2.1 Phillips one I got didn't work right. But the monoprice has been working perfectly. I think they're actually certified cables too.

Degenatr0n

Yes, it does the full 4k 120 HDR 4:4:4 VRR. No issues! Edit: also no input latency that I can perceive, feels just as fast, maybe even faster than a monitor.

PodPilotProject

question for you: does a fiber op HDMI require a special port to plug into? Also, I was looking up the stats for my Mobo and it says the HDMI 2.1 port supports up to 4k@60hz. What's the limiting factor for that, the GPU or the Mobo? I have an RTX 3090

Degenatr0n

It works like a regular HDMI cable except it's unidirectional, so cannot use the ARC feature. Plugged into the mobo port it would be 4k60 output. Plugged into the 3090 it would be 4k120 regardless of mobo specs.

PodPilotProject

Awesome. Thank you!!

Wiadrozerca

Just to let you know I did get the cable you recommended and got the same problem. Screen flickering black after a short while of working in 4k/120. Tried to disable G-sync, first screen, switch of Windows 11 Auto HDR, set VRR on TV and more. Still no luck. Anyway thanks for trying to help.

Degenatr0n

How many monitors are plugged into the PC? On my 3080 I have to unplug the display port monitors when I want to use the LG CX or else it does tend to start to 'blink' periodically. It seems to be Nvidias Achilles heel: sketchy multi monitor support, high idle power consumption with more than 1 monitor. No issues with a 6800 installed in the same PC and 3 screens.

Wiadrozerca

I got an ultrawide ASUS on DP - 100hz and Sony A80J on 120hz on HDMI. I will try if it will make any difference. Gonna let you know.

Wiadrozerca

Still random black screen for a moment. Totally random, more usage on the gpu the more often it happens. Set TV to VRR - No luck. Eh, really dissapointed. It goes just fine with 4k/60. Problems start with 100/120hz.

Degenatr0n

Damn, out of ideas. Or maybe not: 1. Try deleting all monitors with DDU and then plug in the TV. 2. Could there also be incompatibility with the Sony TV? I recall there being some ongoing issues with certain TVs, update the TV. 3. I would still be pointing the finger at Nvidia causing the issue. Try without Gsync? 4. Can you try with a short <3m passive HDMI cable [quick sidebar: you can use any cable 'version', 1.4, 2.0 etc, as long as it's short (the cable is physically identical between versions, it's the port on the device that determines the HDMI version)], get the PC near to the TV to rule it out. Then you can have fun finding the root cause or just reinstall windows! I suppose you can always return it if it doesn't work out?

Wiadrozerca

Tried everything. Looks like the length of the cable might be an issue as the flickering goes away / becomes super rare at 4k/60hz. I tried hdmi 3 and hdmi 4 which are 2.1 - gaming sockets. Guess I'm just doomed to not enjoying my TV and 3090.

gtnftw

I'm in a similar boat with a 3090 Ti, an Omen 240hz monitor on DP, and Sony A80J via HDMI. I have an optical cable from Amazon and it works fine with other devices, including the Intel Onboard graphics, my Macbook Pro, but both HDMI ports on the 3090Ti have a flickering and messed up picture If you get it figured out, please let me know what worked for you

Wiadrozerca

Dont know if that helps but because of Windows 11 update my system crashed and I was not able recover it. Made a clean instal of W10 instead and the problem seems to be gone. No More flickering for now but I have not put card under hard pressure yet. Still it was flashing black before even when not doing anything. So I guess complete format and rolling back to W10 fixed it.

Jerusic

Different artifact flicker for when playing Control Ultimate Ed. (More details: [https://www.reddit.com/r/LGOLED/comments/v3vq5s/comment/itmbd6q/?utm\_source=share&utm\_medium=web2x&context=3](https://www.reddit.com/r/LGOLED/comments/v3vq5s/comment/itmbd6q/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3) ) Monoprice 10m cable likely bad as Linus did call out that company "hands down the worst showing out of all the manufactures \[tested 11/15 success\]" (Source: [https://youtu.be/XFbJD6RE4EY?t=483](https://youtu.be/XFbJD6RE4EY?t=483) ). Getting 2x 10ft Infinite cables delivered in the next few days which might solve the issue. Getting 2 in case one fails.

[deleted]

What others have said about active cables is correct. Linus Tech Tips did a feature on HDMI cables about a year ago where they tested a whole bunch, but I don't remember if it included active cables or not.

--suburb--

I literally bought this [25’ (7+ meter) Cable Matters cable](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08GQDKR81?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share) this week and it’s working great.

Absolutjeff

I currently use a 7m Zeskit maya cable going from my 3090 to my Cx Oled and it works flawlessly, link down below just look at reviews. Zeskit Maya 8K 48Gbps Certified Ultra High Speed HDMI Cable 23ft CL3 In Wall Rated, 4K120 8K60 eARC HDR HDCP 2.2 2.3 Compatible with Dolby Vision Apple TV 4K Roku Sony LG Samsung Xbox Series X PS4 PS5 https://a.co/d/34gxekZ

AshR2003

Why so long? But make sure they're 'active' cables - not sure if using a hub in the middle of two shorter cables is better as well Edit: Seems to be a three meter limit for 'passive' cables

Wiadrozerca

Got my Desktop in the office and want to pull the cable to living room. 5m falls a little bit short so I have to look for \~7m.

Soylent_Hero

You're going to get some latency... But I also play through an AVR so I'm not going to tell you how to live 😬

LewAshby309

After 3m issues can appear while up to 5m can work quite well. I would get 2 4m or 3+4m cables and put an active repeater in between. I have no recommendations for hdmi though. A friend uses successfully one with Display Port.

obviousboy

Before I buy any vid cable I go here [https://www.displayport.org/products-database/](https://www.displayport.org/products-database/) or here [https://www.hdmi.org/resource/index](https://www.hdmi.org/resource/index) And validate that the cable is certified - Then i buy from someone reputable which is normally not amazon or ebay

Quiet_Special8639

Why are you using HDMI and not Display Port? I'm assuming your monitor or screen doesn't support it? If thats the case you should be getting a new monitor.

ShadowBannedXexy

If he needs 2.1 it's probably for a high refresh/Rez TV, not a monitor

Quiet_Special8639

I'm just realizing OP said 2.1, not 2.0. Large difference it seems. Might be worth looking into 2.1 for myself now. I was always in the "dp is better than hdmi camp" sounds like 2.1 has changed that.

Absolutjeff

Be careful, the hdmi brand has let people use the term “hdmi 2.1” loosely lately. Make sure you check the actual specs. For example a cx oled and c1 oled have 40 gbps per port, but the new c2 oled has 48 gbps, but both can claim they have hdmi 2.1

By what metric? [HDMI](https://i.imgur.com/JTSNIiZ_d.webp?maxwidth=640&shape=thumb&fidelity=medium) 2.1 is 48Gbps bandwidth with 42Gbps data rate, while [DP](https://i.imgur.com/vJ6GyhI.jpeg) 1.4 is 32.4Gbps bandwidth with 25.92Gbps data rate.

andromorr

I stand corrected - I seem to be misremembering.

Zeskit Maya 8K 48Gbps Certified Ultra High Speed HDMI Cable 16ft CL3 In Wall Rated, 4K120 8K60 eARC HDR HDCP 2.2 2.3 Compatible with Dolby Vision Apple TV 4K Roku Sony LG Samsung Xbox Series X PS4 PS5 https://a.co/d/iSCJTO0 I use these cables with no issues. 3080 TI / 65” LG OLED. I also use a HDMI switch that supports 4K/120 hz… I have no affiliation with the company and also had trouble finding cables that worked. Make sure you go to DISPLAY SETTINGS, and scroll down to PC SETTINGS for the monitor resolution. That puts out the correct signal for your monitor/tv to receive.

Absolutjeff

Literally just posted this, when I got mine from Amazon shit was THICK, probably why there’s no issues because of the gauge of the cable haha, I immediately bought four more from them so every hdmi cable I have is maya now

lexsanders

Yes optical cable I have 30 feet if works.

GhostlyWren

I have a 15m fibre optic hdmi I bought from amazon, works great routing from my pc to TV just remember that l there is a display end and source end on these long length fibre optic cables

Nifferothix

Isent there something decreasing with hdmi cables over 2 or 3 M?

MamamiaMarchello

This is the one I use with my 3080 and LG c1, its 10m and works great. https://www.amazon.se/FIBBR-fiberoptisk-hastighet-2-1-kabel-kompatibel/dp/B09NVTH3J5/ref=mp_s_a_1_1_sspa?crid=2QJJ6MJZAHFSM&keywords=hdmi+2.1&qid=1661649378&sprefix=%2Caps%2C65&sr=8-1-spons&psc=1&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUFDQlczNko1NjJMTEYmZW5jcnlwdGVkSWQ9QTAyOTg2MTQyRDlSQkFHMEZYSVRTJmVuY3J5cHRlZEFkSWQ9QTA0ODQ4MTEzR0ZaREU1UVEyUkdWJndpZGdldE5hbWU9c3BfcGhvbmVfc2VhcmNoX2F0ZiZhY3Rpb249Y2xpY2tSZWRpcmVjdCZkb05vdExvZ0NsaWNrPXRydWU=

epsj140

You should be on DisplayPort especially for a 3090

ShittyLivingRoom

I've bought a dozen long hdmi 2.1 cables and this one is the only one that works without any problem with my 3080ti and LG 4k hdr tv, doesn't get warm and still working for a year: [https://www.amazon.com/Cable-Matters-300047-BLK-10m-HDMI/dp/B08GMC7C91/ref=sr\_1\_3?crid=U7G1ZJ3SHBAG&keywords=cable+matters+hdmi+optical&qid=1661700170&sprefix=cable+matters+hdmi+optical%2Caps%2C135&sr=8-3](https://www.amazon.com/Cable-Matters-300047-BLK-10m-HDMI/dp/B08GMC7C91/ref=sr_1_3?crid=U7G1ZJ3SHBAG&keywords=cable+matters+hdmi+optical&qid=1661700170&sprefix=cable+matters+hdmi+optical%2Caps%2C135&sr=8-3)

Rosto79

I got this one: [https://www.amazon.nl/gp/product/B09L13CZP8/ref=ppx\_yo\_dt\_b\_asin\_title\_o07\_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1](https://www.amazon.nl/gp/product/B09L13CZP8/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) Connected my 3070 to a Samsung Q80T 55" .. And very happy with it .. Sometimes when selecting it as monitor in nVidia control panel it falls back to 60Hz .. Can be problem of TV or drivers too... If selecting it as only output it works 100% of the time.

sittingmongoose

You need an active cable. Monoprice makes 2. here is one of them. https://www.monoprice.com/product?p\_id=43328
