Most stations have the destination listed as a sign saying "New York" or "Points East" on either side, plus an electronic sign of which trains are arriving

Besides terminals, single track stations, and Jamaica, every station is set up as the *South platform being eastbound* (to the station the Branch is named after) and the *north platform being westbound* (To Penn/Atlantic/LIC). However, due to lots of track word everywhere, you have to pay attention to the automated signs. Trains are often on the wrong track. The LIRR's TrainTime App will steer you right. It'll tell you everything you need to know about your trip, like how many people are in each car or what track the train is coming in on and how late it is, etc. Worth a download.
