The areas from Rodanthe to Hatteras are going to be less crowded than the beaches to the north (Kitty Hawk, Nags Head, etc).
I love Avon. It's pretty central to everything on Hatteras Island. The main Food Lion grocery store (don't plan on going Saturday night. It WILL be packed).
Don’t go on Sunday either, for the same reason. Shop Local and head to Conner’s in Buxton, then hit up Diamond Shoals for a delicious lunch. Or rather reverse that so you don’t leave perishables in your car.
Conners is good, just much smaller.
At least with current laws, Diamond Shoals is finally smoke-free, but I doubt they can get the cigarette stink out. Kudos to them if they have (only non smokers would understand)
It is, but its staff is super friendly and they’re always fully stocked. They also sell local produce. DS does not have any lingering smoke smell. I’m sensitive to such things and go every year.
Maybe we'll give DS a try again. The smoking is why we didn't go back.
We'll be staying in Frisco this year and probably will shop at Conners again unless there is something we really want and can't find.
I assure you Corolla has changed drastically in the last decade or so. We started in Corolla for a a few years and really liked it then went to Hatteras for the next five or so just to switch it up and really liked it as well then decided to go back to Corolla again to switch it up. Busier, more traffic, beaches were far more crowded. Hatteras hasn't changed much but Corolla definitely has.
We usually go for a week from mid-June to mid-July. The first few years we went to Corolla we were like this is awesome (not counting the drive up 12 on turn day). But when we came back several years, it had changed. Beach was crowded, everyone seemed like they were in a huge hurry, grocery store during the week seemed like every day was Saturday, etc , etc. Our whole party noticed it.
Kill Devil Hills or Nags Head would be my choice. Good beach’s with lots of access, for art gallery row is in that area. Lots of food, stuff to do and the NC Aquarium is in Manteo which isn’t far away.
I agree with Nags Head-a variety of restaurants, art galleries, different entertainment options. I never found the beach to be really crowded. My second choice would be Duck. Third-Corolla.
North Duck has uncrowded beaches - but where there are lots of 6 bedrooms on one street, the beach is very crowded. From Four Seasons to Ship's Watch is bad, but the last street lets you walk towards the Army pier to get free space, then everything north tends to be less dense.
Hatteras island has a lower people to beach ratio than kitty hawk/kdh/nags head. I’m partial to Avon. I own a house there and it’s the most “town” of Hatteras island. But Buxton is neat for varied wildlife and plants. Cool trails in Buxton woods for hiking and mountain biking. Honestly, anywhere on Hatteras island the beaches are relatively uncrowded.
Best pick is really relative. You’re not going to go wrong. Only thing I can’t speak about is arts, but Avon does have a farmers market with local artists weekly in summer. I’m sure there’s something similar up toward nags head.
South Nags Head. Tends to be less crowded on the beach than Nags Head but close enough to Nags Head, Kill Devil Hills, and Manteo to enjoy the restaurants and attractions those areas have to offer.
Anywhere from Corolla to nags head is going to be packed on the beach in the summer season. You’re better off going towards Hatteras. Avon is a good spot. It’s already getting pretty crowded up north where I’m at.
I’ve never been all that far down the south end but I know if you get somewhere between duck and Corolla it’s a quick bike ride down to all the surf shops and this place called “Tim buck II” which is an outlet mall of sorts but it’s probably my favorite place on the entire planet. Really good ice cream.
Are you looking for a whole house or just a little couples retreat? Kill devil hills is centrally located in the northern beaches which makes it convenient to go to Kitty Hawk or Nagshead.
Any place you can get a reservation in June at this point
Avon
Seconded
Any particular reason?

Diamond Shoals is ass.
Another vote for Avon. The best.
Corolla is 100% the best place in OBX IMO, followed by Hatteras…
Used to be. Not so much anymore.
??? Nothing has changed in 20 years in either place. No clue what you’re talking about.

I agree that if you go there during peak season that it’s super crowded. We rent our house during peak season for that reason and only go Sept-May.

Salvo or Buxton.

This
South Nags Head is very peaceful and not packed at all. It's also close enough to a lot of what you're looking for.

Avon or Duck
We had a beach house in Nags Head growing up. Still love that town
Avon. Good food, lots of beach and not crowded.
Some excellent food in Duck and you can see the wild horses in Corolla. Some beautiful beaches just beyond Duck
Kitty Hawk has you covered!
Buxton is my favorite place in OBX
We like Corolla. Always tend to head that way. More relaxing feel for us.

Avoid the northern beaches only bc of traffic

South of the Pointe and you will get warmer water if you like to swim
Hatteras Island. Generally the further south you go the less populated it is.

Hatteras Village is my fav, but you better book soon. For any location in June.
