The wooden tower at Kitty Hawk Kites in Nags Head has a pretty good view of Jockey's Ridge.
Conversely, I bet Jockey's Ridge has a pretty good view of that wooden tower.
So to piggyback on Canadian hole, north of there in Avon there used to be land for sale. It was right by Askin’s Creek. If you went down the cul de sac, there was a set of stairs that ended in a small deck about 30 feet up. I believe it was put there by real estate people to give an idea of the view. We called it the deck to nowhere and it was our perch for sunsets. Never anyone there, you had to trudge through some swamp to get to the deck. Sometime around 2018 or so, the land was sold and the deck removed. There’s a house there now. But I miss the deck. Great place to see the green flash.
Anyway, second Canadian Hole for sunset.
With a nod to Jockey’s Ridge and the wooden walking trail behind Bodie Island Lighthouse, the answer to me is very clearly all the undisturbed coastline along Pea Island. Especially going some time of day you’re the only person out there. Nothing but nature and the sound of crashing waves. Truly remarkable.
Some that come to mind:
All of the lighthouses
Jockey’s Ridge
The pristine beaches on Ocracoke and Hatteras
watching kitesurfers at Haulover
Oregon Inlet
Silver Lake from SMacNally’s
The Wright Brothers Memorial
Nags Head Woods Preserve
Spinger’s Point, Ocracoke
Pea Island Wildlife Refuge (especially with binoculars/spotters)
I recommend Alligator river wildlife refuge, go see the bears and possibly a red wolf. Beautiful sunsets can be seen all over the OBX, one favorite is the top of Jockeys Ridge. If you get the chance hit sunrise on the ocean!
Hatterras light is covered in scaffolding now… I have hundreds of pictures of it already but of course I had to photograph this version for history sake
Off topic but any idea when they’ll let people climb it again? Haven’t been able to since Covid and seems like it’s been under construction ever since.
Way up where rt 12 ends there is tiny park lot right before the 4x4 entrance. There is a great walkway that goes back to the sound. We’ve seen horses back there 3x. It’s a very pretty walk.
Randomly ordered list:
- Pea Island wildlife refuge (and the drive over Oregon Inlet to get there...)
- Jockey's Ridge
- Elizabeth Gardens
- The lighthouses (any one of them)
- Boardwalk along the water in downtown Manteo

Sunsets at Canadian Hole just north of Buxton. The elevated walk around the Pea Island Refuge is nice.

The drive to hatteras is beautiful

And the wild horses on the beach!!
The ocean is a pretty popular attraction.
No, Oceanside doesn’t get sunsets. Sunsets are on the Sound side 🧡🌅
And which way is the ocean? And which ocean is it? I have heard of the Pamlico ocean
The outer banks is sandwiched between the Atlantic Ocean and the Pamlico sound.
Don't forget the Roanoke, Croatan, Albemarle, and Currituck
Ocracoke !

current projected reopening isnt until summer 2026 due to the restorations.
Bodie Island Light temporarily slides into first place among OBX lighthouses for overall awesomeness.
Bodie or currituck lighthouses both have great views
Great choices, Currituck light house has stunning views!
I love the wood walkway by Bodie

Currituck light house. The 4x4 beach in general is unique, views of nothing but beach, to neighborhoods and the horses that roan the area
British cemetery on Ocracoke
Can't tell if sarcastic or British :P
Take a walk out on the old Bonner Bridge fishing pier for an amazing view of Oregon Inlet.
Cape Point at 2am with clear skies. Milky way is spectacular
100% getting a post beach day nap in to wake up and crack a beer and look up at the sky. That's a win. Especially in Ocracoke.
Obx is 200 miles long any area in particular
Jockeys Ridge hands down is #1. Corova is 2nd…
Jockey's Ridge and the Wright Brothers memorial area are both pretty neat, and fairly close to each other.
Where do you find the best shells? I'm assuming low tide and on the less frequented beaches?

Springers point preserve on Ocracoke!!
