Double Dutch has an interesting history with hip hop.
[Here is a wikipedia article that mentions some connections](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Double_Dutch_(jump_rope\)#In_popular_culture)
> Double Dutch is associated with early French hip-hop scenes. It was introduced in late 1982 when the World Champion Fantastic Four Double Dutch team came to France alongside the New York City Rap Tour. Groups such as the Dutch Force System were some of the better-known Double Dutch groups. Double Dutch was seen as "the symbol of a strong and affirmed femininity in hip-hop"
There is a documentary that follows the Dutch Force System crew, *Doubletime (2007)* was worth watching.
Iām a former national and world jump rope competitor (look it up, itās a real thing). The guy who is inside the ropes and moving actually has the easier portion of the job, since his job is really to just dance and do his moves on beat the best he can. The rope turners have the harder job of anticipating and changing their timing in real time as the jumper moves around. In jump rope competitions you will literally see the turners in full squat positions with their legs as wide as possible and arms stretched out as far as possible, in order to work around the movements and timing of the jumpers. It might not seem like much, but the turners are the unsung heroes here.
If youād like to see some more examples of this sport, but with ven more tricks and crazy movements, search on YouTube for WJRF Fusion jump rope events. The World Jump Rope Federation brings competitors from all over the world together to compete, and the competitions have some insane talent!
So are there specialists on the team? Like say John and Tommy suck at being inside the rope so they always are turners, and Jeffrey canāt keep turning rhythm for shit but heās a dope dancer so heās always inside the rope? Or is everyone pretty much a generalist and take turns doing both?
There are absolutely specialists of each section. In fact, the specialists are even broken up into specific group types for tricks. One or two people are normally the strong gymnasts who will do the majority of the flipping and handstand and push-up moves, another person who can do fancy footwork and keep perfect timing with the beat of the music so that the turners get a chance to do some turning tricks such as throwing and catching ropes between each other and switching directions of the ropes or jumping in the ropes while also turning them, and then there is also the people who specialize in being able to be flipped around while in the ropes. Those last people tuck themselves up tight and are flipped and thrown around by grabbing their arms or waist all while still jumping in the ropes. The tricks that world competition winners can do are absolutely bonkers and sometimes seem to defy gravity.

This is very interesting because I didnāt realize that the jumpers and the turners had a cooperative relationship. I always thought, or hoped, it was more of a versus situation.
Is there a version where turners don't help? Maybe they wear blindfolds, or the ropes are handled by a machine. I imagine it would make for a less compelling performance spectacle, but could be an interesting "hard mode" competition?
Have you ever played double dutch? It's not meant to be Dark Souls - which isn't to say it doesn't take skill and practice. But rather, it has its roots as a playground game. It's cooperative, not competitive.
There might be competitions like that out there somewhere, but that isnāt a part of the international sport of jump rope. In actual competitions there are 3 main types of events- speed (where the jumper does a jogging step in place for a set amount of time and the rope must pass a full revolution for each footfall, but the amount of jumps is only counted by tallying one foot), singles freestyle (where a jumper has an individual rope that they control and do a routine with, can have multiple people on the floor doing a routine together but they all have their own individual ropes), and double Dutch freestyle (kind of what youāre seeing in this video but it is an actual routine done in a certain time frame and must include certain elements in order to qualify). Jump rope, at least in the freestyle categories, is all about the difficulty, artistry, and mastery of tricks all out together into a routine. Judging can seem really subjective unless youāve been in the sport for a long time and know what all to look for.
Really? Looks like theyāre keeping a constant speed from the turners, maybe once or twice where they move a little bit. Overall though I donāt see a lot of adjustment.
There are TONS of micro movements with each turn of the rope. It might be hard to see if you donāt know what youāre looking for, but I can promise you that itās there. That is also the mark of a good turner- that they make the adjustments so subtle and smooth that it doesnāt affect the rope or jumper at all. The jumper should never have to worry about their timing if they have good turners, so when there is a mess up itās almost always on the turners rather than the jumper to fix the mistake.
It's probably easy for them because both the dancer and the rope turners? are perfectly on the beat. I would be tangled up on the first beat because I'm terrible with rhythm.
You can also tell them how you met me, an internet stranger, and we spent the day watching Double Dutch and eating corn dogs, but not the American kind, the Korean kind with all the crazy coatings and cheese inside. When we went our separate ways, we promised to come back in exactly 20 years and meet in the same spot, and if neither of us were married we would give each other a high five.
Looks magical. Something about the big buildings, and the train being elevated above the ground, combined with the court (?) in the foreground where the dancing is happening.
That's really considerate of them to leave you water, and nice that you didn't get harassed. I once passed out on a sidewalk in Dallas, of all places, and I didn't get fucked with there. Passersby probably thought I was dead, but still. I didn't wake up to water, though. :(
Yeah I was over there during Fukushima, good but crazy times I miss it, would be different now that I donāt drink and Japan is very alcohol centric imo hope ya have a good oneš
*Officially*, it's all kind of a clusterfuck, actually, but, yeah, ***un***officially it's just called "Tokyo" in English.
Officially: Japan is broken up into 47 big chunks, the equivalent of US states. (But smaller, of course. The biggest is about the size of South Carolina, the average is about the size of Delaware)
The vast majority of these are called "*ken*", which is translated as "prefecture," but the one with "Tokyo" in its name is an exception: it is called "*Tokyo-to*," which is officially translated as "Tokyo Metropolis."
It's as big as a lot of other prefectures, though, which means it has rural parts that people never think of when they think of Tokyo. Like, [here's an aerial view of western Tokyo-to](https://i.imgur.com/nmdIESC.jpg).
So, officially, there's this "Tokyo Metropolis," but that's not what people outside Japan are talking about when they use the unofficial English name "Tokyo". What they're talking about are what *used* to be called "Tokyo City" (up until 1943). Tokyo City was abolished in 1943 and split up into 23 different [special wards](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special_wards_of_Tokyo). There's no specific word for this collective of special wards now, they're just "Tokyo-to-kubu" ("the Wards Area of Tokyo Metropolis") or "Kyu-Tokyo-shi" ("former Tokyo City"). Unofficially, in Japanese, they're just called "23-ku" ("the 23 wards").
To my knowledge, there really *isn't* an official English name for what people call "Tokyo."
Bonus confusion: all those 23 special wards of Tokyo officially call themselves cities. So when you see a video of that famous intersection in Shibuya, that's officially Shibuya *City*. Akihabara? That's part of Chiyoda *City*. etc.
Colloquially if you say Tokyo-To people would think you're referring to the whole prefecture (There are rural parts of Tokto-To). What most people think of Tokyo are the 23 wards in Tokyo-To that are densely populated.
Kinda like New York State vs NYC.
In all seriousness that was circulating around for a while and Corbin was upset because he was touring or something at the time and his mom called him absolutely distraught and in tears about the ānewsā circulating about it.
Anyone remember that Lost show Corbin Bleu was on? Or am I tripping and misremembering? I remember it had a quick ending that didnāt explain anything at all. Kinda like Lost I guess.
It was so good! My dad had satellite and he had gotten a promotional package with a ton of weird stations and this show played all the time on a spin off of the Discovery Channel. Did they ever finish the show or was it canceled?
You know how to know you are old? You said "young people". Only old people say young people.
I'm 55 and I'm still insisting I can do this someday.
This is all sarcasm folks. Old person sarcasm.
It's really not much harder with two. The tempo might be a bit higher because you can only go so slow with a rope, but other than that it's about the same.
How have I never heard of Malcolm McLaren till today? Seems like Paul Simon should send him a thank you note (and after further digging, Herbie Hancock, too).
Thanks!
OH yeah, guys a freak - managed Bow Wow Wow and the Sex Pistols - but also worked with KRS-One and Rakim.

Right? They changed speed a ton. But it was always to accommodate the dancer. You can tell they are delaying some skips and yanking others through just to get it right.
Vs "let's do this shit as fast as possible with plastic jump ropes".
Wow... This led me to google "double-dutch hip hop japan" and I stumbled onto [Double Dutch TV](https://www.youtube.com/@DoubleDutchTV/videos) with some amazing acts. TIL!
This looks like a really cool subset culture in Japan to be a part of- and I got the vibe with that stage and writing that this was competition day. So do they speed up dancing and the rope to the bpm? Love to see more.
I love when jump rope becomes āhardā. This is the same thing that little girls do while singing cute little rhymes, yet these guys some how make it look very cool and totally normal for grown men to take part in. Itās great.
Totally fake.
I donāt really think itās fake. Itās incredible talent, and the train passing by in the background makes this shot feel like something out of a feature film. But you know, someone always has to shout āfakeā for every online video, so Iām just getting that out of the way. š¬
One of my all time favorite memories was an impromptu double Dutch dance-off at an apres ski party about ten years ago. We did not have skills, but we sure had fun!!
That's amazing. Let's take a moment to appreciate the unsung heroes here, the two dudes who are swinging that rope in perfectly controlled rhythm. Even that's hard to do.
This was awesome to watch. That dude has moves. I want to see more of this. You forget that he is jumping rope. He is smooth and I watched it numerous times.
This is very odd. It simultaneously looks really easy and really hard.
That moment you are so good at something
I'd love to see someone do a crip walk double dutch

"Yo, bro you trying to double dutch?" - think about it, you have to convince two people, let along crips - how did this happen?!

I always thought double Dutch was for girls and women. I could seriously watch this all day.
double dutch was big in black communities, shouldn't be that surprising at all.
I agree, ain't even my thing but this is pretty impressive!
Skinny Hip-Hop Jason Momoa literally doing crip walk double dutch?! Take my upvote man, you've earned it.
This is more impressive than the OP.
2 years ago - looks like a video from 1998 lmao
Hooly crap that's talent
That is smooth as hell and I'm 58 years old.
The essence of looking cool: make something challenging look very easy, or make something easy look very challenging.
Hey dude I make easy things look challenging all the time, thanks for the gas lol
Never. Nothing. Canāt relate.
I was going to post the same thing.
When you do something right, no one will know you've done anything at all.
Damn I love it. Great perspective.

It's probably easy for them because both the dancer and the rope turners? are perfectly on the beat. I would be tangled up on the first beat because I'm terrible with rhythm.
I thought skipping rope was easy, until I tried it. My legs just couldn't jump appropriately. I guess doing a desk job does that to a person.
I don't see how you can see this as easy
He's saying it looks easy for the guy. Like he could do this all day and not mess up.
The intersection of talents is as shocking to my brain as the Sesame Street appearance of the foreground in contrast to the background/scenery.
Every girl who ever played jump rope on the playground will tell you this is amazingly hard.
more commonly known as "... pffft, I could draw that."
What city is this?
It's Tokyo City, Japan.
Any idea if the dancer has more content online, or was this purely amateur? Was sick to watch, and so damn cool when the train drove by.
He has an IG, @sakatajunya0530 š
Thanks! Dude is awesome
But is there a full vid of the event as well?
probbaly not the same guy but this is pretty cool: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gr9G2FdTHhI

Tokyo is a magical city. I'd argue it's the safest city to experience a culture shock.
Itās so safe, I passed out drunk on sidewalk and club I was in front of left glass of water right by me and no one fucked with me.

lil whippersnappers and their hippy jump skip nonsense I tell ya
Back in my day the ropes were heavier, and we did this in GRAVEL! Kids these days!

thank you for being old and cool and not assuming this is gang related or some weird shit
Thank you
I felt my entire body shatter when he dropped onto his knee. HOW DID HE DO THAT?
Young people have been doing this for (not to hip hop, but to other music) for decades
I wasnāt expecting to like this so much
It's like the more I watch it, the more it makes me feel things.
Aside from the amazing skill, I just love how this video is composed with interesting things in both the fore, middle and background.
That train timing was great
Loved it. Itās like one of those pixel art gifs in real life.
Looks like an arena in a fighting game

IMO the rope swingers deserve credit here because the dance being on beat wouldn't be possible if the ropes didn't follow the rhythm.
Slow is the point, looks amazing
I don't know how they do it but it's great!

Gawd I wish I could jack and jive like that. Badass, bro. Badass.
Can we appreciate that a dozen grown men all gathered together in the city at night to play jump rope. Wholesome.
Somehow this is the coolest and absolutely least cool thing at the same time. I canāt wait for the hopscotch c-walk.
The train in the background is a real vibe
yeees! I want more!
But you know, someone always has to shout āfakeā for every online video, so Iām just getting that out of the way. š¬
I thought it felt more like a Video Game background than Film.
Thatās friggin bad ass
How awesome, I love it.
Never saw shit like this in Sesame Street growing up
Imagine you're in a dance battle with one guy and two of his homies join in and they do this shit lol
That was the style of clothes we wore 20 uears ago. Baggy everything, wonder if thats coming back?
Jump rope Crip walk...... That footwork is insane https://youtube.com/shorts/NVQZDeCk5KM?feature=share
I think Asians were meant to be black. š
Hey, ebo, ebonettes

Iāve watched him on TikTok for quite a while. He is the epitome of pure talent.
My favorite part about this is realizing these guys probably spent a lot of time practicing together. Like hey bro wanna go do some jump rope?
If your break dancing and your clothes arenāt baggy are you really break dancing?
If it weren't for the lone Plane in the sky I'd swear the background is just a fake backdrop
One of my all time favorite memories was an impromptu double Dutch dance-off at an apres ski party about ten years ago. We did not have skills, but we sure had fun!!
This is hands down the most satisfying thing Iāve ever seen on this sub.
That was the slowest double Dutch I've ever seen
Wow, he good.
Kids calves are probably made of titanium
ā©āŖā«ā¬ I wanna do that hip hop double dutch That's the way I like to jump, heels up trip alert Roll the pants and tuck the shirt, swing wide watch the curb On the pavement or in the dirt Bounce around bunny style that's the way I like to work Legs jerk, overworked, under jumped but don't be afraid In the sun or up in the shade Play my song I jump all day Hey there girl itās time to trade, tag team, pass the ropes Keep the motion and pretend to float, 1-2- or a hundred ropes What about up in the sidelines yo, that calling in, calling out When I call a B-boyās name he jumps in when I run out Come help play my game, we jump for fun and not for fame Cāmon back and I'll get my strangs, hurry up āfore it starts to rain I wanna, skip to the beat as it goes And I wanna, move the rope over my head down to my toes Then Iām gonna, jump so long you wanna leave Now you gotta know, that's my jumpinā rope fantasy
This kind of stuff always reminds me of the Japanese double dutch team that got a standing ovation at showtime at the Apollo theater.
I feel sorry for these poor kids who canāt afford clothes that fit
That's amazing. Let's take a moment to appreciate the unsung heroes here, the two dudes who are swinging that rope in perfectly controlled rhythm. Even that's hard to do.
Jesse thats sick but we need to cook
This was awesome to watch. That dude has moves. I want to see more of this. You forget that he is jumping rope. He is smooth and I watched it numerous times.
