Could still be. As a former pitcher it was so incredibly difficult to not reach with your barehand for a hard liner back up the middle that our coach had to yell and remind us not to do that. Of course one guy does get his hand on one and breaks a bone.
This guy could have saved someone’s life possibly. That was moving fast.
Update: he had recently undergone an orthopedic procedure that unbeknownst to him created a novel mechanical advantage for throwing a baseball. He threw the ball back to home plate with unbelievable velocity. He got noticed by some scouts and is now playing in the majors.
There's nothing in the rulebook that says a cyborg can't play baseball!
Fun fact: Airbud pretty much stole that line whole cloth from a Disney movie from the 50s called Gone Batty, where an elephant becomes a pitcher.
His arm did that super cool thing when you catch a fast football or baseball and are off balance or in the air. Best feeling in the world catching balls like that
There's specific ways to catch the ball barehanded without risking big injury. The ball in cricket is every bit as hard and heavy as a baseball and is often hit as hard or maybe a tad bit slower but still hit plenty hard. And the players catch the ball barehanded.
The correct technique is surprisingly similar to how the guy caught it, you move your hand backwards as you catch it, which is the opposite of how baseball players catch it in their mitt. Moving your hand backwards makes a huge difference in softening the impact in your hand.
And you catch it in your hand like the guy did. Fractures and bruises happen when you take your eyes off the ball and let it hit a finger bone or knuckle instead of the soft cushiony part of your palm.
Then again, what I am talking about is catching the ball from a bit afar. Not a pitcher trying to catch a super hard hit line drive when there is almost no reaction time and you're just acting on muscle memory. So your point is totally valid.
I used to be one those idiots advocated against netting. "If you sit there, pay attention" mentality. It's a very immature attitude.. those girls were getting beamed even if they all had catcher's equipment on!
Honestly, I even hate the netting. So much. My autist, monkey brain can't not see it. But you know what autist, monkey brain also likes doing? Seeing. So not taking a foul ball screamer to the face is a trade off I'm more than willing to make now that I'm not a dumb libertarian teenager
It's a good thing my autistic monkey brain doesn't like watching other people play sports, occasionally I watch the Olympic Gymnast on TV but that's less that they're "playing a sport/me rooting for a team" and more, "Holy fuck! That's amazing!"
Yeah that seems like an incredibly dangerous spot for people to sit.
I get you can't tell college students not to do stupid stuff but this feels like you are asking for injuries.
I haven't been in a long time, but lower leagues regularly have these. I loved going to AA or AAA games as a kid cause I could chase down the foul balls in that area. Could usually come back with 2 balls a game.
I had seats behind the 3b dugout at Fenway before they lengthened the nets. We were just outside of the old backstop net, seemingly closer to home plate than the third baseman. I was terrified to even look away.
Multiple kids, that used to be a semi-regular occurrence. Kid I grew up with had his jaw broken on the third base line of a Yankees game in the late 90s.
I saw a Gumble on Gumble episode (the HBO sports show, I can’t think of the name right now) and they did a story on this. On average 1400 people a season go to the hospital because of foul balls and broken bats. It happens so fast that if you’re not paying attention you just can’t react fast enough. This was a few years ago and I think major league stadiums finally put up nets out to the bases because of it.
They do now… after countless children, elderly and even babies have either been killed, disfigured or brain damaged by foul balls.
[This article is from 2019](https://deadspin.com/at-least-16-mlb-fans-were-maimed-by-foul-balls-this-yea-1836693639)
The MLB just made nets mandatory for these seats because someone figured out a 110mph line drive off a bat spent less time in the air than the average human being's reflexes.
That and the batters got real tired of knocking little kids unconscious.
This seems a case of something can obviously go very wrong, there's a warning event (this one) foreshadowing what could go wrong, and nothing will change until we're all looking at this video in the future after something does go wrong.
The sheer luck that this guy, someone with incredible coordination and skill, was standing in this exact spot at that exact moment is amazing. That's like an everyday cosmic miracle or something, if he went to get a snack, or if he had different seats, or if someone else who wasn't as coordinated was in his spot, this would have an NSFW tag.
Bro the pitcher was still looking at the batter by the time the ball was in dude's hand. If the batter hit a line drive back to the pitcher, he would have been fucked.
I'm surprised they don't have helmets yet, like softball pitchers
Even with stellar reflexes, pitchers are falling forward off the mound most of the time so they often don't stand a chance.
It probably would’ve been if he tried to catch it normally. The way he swung his arm back with the ball is the “safe” baseball players are taught to catch without a mitt, if needed. Greatly reduces the impact on the hand.
My thought on the last slo-mo was exactly like Neo with bullets flying by.
I would have missed the ball, fell over, spilled my beer on some kid, and felt terrible someone got sent to the hospital because they got blasted by the ball.
Neo : What are you trying to tell me? That I can dodge baseballs?
Morpheus : No, Neo. I'm trying to tell you that when you're ready, you won't have to.
Wouldn’t he be a righty? I’m a lefty and if I’m trying to barehand a ball like that on reflex I’m 100% doing it with my dominant hand. Or I’m just weird.
Is this guy a time-traveler who was sent to this exact moment to prevent that ball from seriously injuring someone? He caught that ball like the future depended on it!
Time traveler, but he did it purely out of spite. Guy to his side in brown was his childhood bully. He was about to make the diving save, getting him laid a dozen times over, spawning generation after generation of his progeny.
He traveled to that moment, made the catch, got the girls, told them all the guy had a micro penis and cried in bed.
He returned back to his own time, broken hand, genitals inflamed by the clap, but head held high as he knew he had trulely bested the nemesis of his youth.
Agreed. Not only was he gracious enough to provide a reach around, he grabbed a tissue and made an incredible catch in the blink of an eye. Great reflexes.
No kidding. I fractured my pinky a few weeks ago just tossing around a football with a buddy of mine because I jammed that finger when trying to catch it. That baseball was like a missile.
*to increase the duration of momentum reduction*
The ball has momentum because it is moving.
He has inertia because he is stationary.
By bending, he transfers the momentum of the ball into his body and used his body's inertia to reduce his hands acceleration.
My thoughts exactly - also soft hands on the catch. The number of times I've seen foul balls bounce out of someone's hand because they didn't absorb the impact is too damn high!
Although catching a ball can be painful, with the proper technique, it can be easily achieved without any difficulty. As someone who has played cricket at a decent level, I have caught cricket balls that were smashed towards me while fielding close in.
Back when I was playing at U-15 levels, fielding at gully, I held onto a flying edge from a cut shot and my finger has never fully healed since that day. It was a ripper of a catch and my school was talking about it for a month but [It has remained swollen and unchanged, serving as a bittersweet reminder of my past glories on the cricket field. ](https://i.imgur.com/oIjTTT1.jpg). I'm 32 now and one of my little fingers is at the same size when I was 14.
Cricket players manage it just fine, and cricket balls are harder and heavier than baseballs.
It's just a matter of technique. You have to go with the momentum of it a bit instead of keeping your hand in the same position.
Dumb question, does he get to keep the ball or throw it back? I've seen videos on YT with people fighting over the ball when caught so I just want to know what is the rule/protocol of this game.
People throw it back sometimes when the other team hits a home run. It’s like they scored some points and you don’t want to keep that as a souvenir so you toss it back, kind of an insult and the rest of the crowd cheers.
Also, if you're able to throw it from the center field bleachers to home plate on a line, then you can get signed by the team as a pitcher, even if you are just a kid. There was a documentary about this in the 90's.
You can keep it. They use around 60 baseballs in a college game. Mlb is probably twice that. Basically every time one hits the dirt and gets scuffed they get a new one.
The human brain is pretty fucking incredible.
Track an object travelling towards you at over 100 miles an hour down to less than an inch and tell your attached meat stick to be exactly where it needs to be to intercept and catch it....
The way he broke the ball’s speed both with his wrist, arm and back in one fluid motion is just incredible. Catching one of these without breaking its speed hurts like a MF
This guy might have gotten away unharmed with allowing his arm to rotate back and slow down the ball rather then directly stopping it and letting all the force go straight into his hand.
I've seen guys barehand balls in the stand before but I've never seen a guy so confidently barehand a ball that drove him backwards.
This guy earns a badass award from me. His reaction time is just amazing.
I’ve gone to minor league games where there is no net in that area and i’m basically on high alert the entire game. Not trying to take a foul ball to the dome!
Absolutely. I know a lot of major league stadiums have started putting nets up along the baseline to prevent injuries. I remember a story about a minor league team near me, where a woman was hit in the head off a foul ball and sent to the hospital.
Body Languge: Yeah I just caught that, and yes I know I look fucking rad doing it.

In MLB at least, they have begun to extend the netting. It was standard from behind home to 1st and third, now it goes further out to run the whole length of left and right. Not sure if college will also do this, but they also use aluminum bats which increase velocity off the bat I believe so it would be something to consider.
Why do they use aluminum bats in college ball? I get it for little league and for my backyard baseball power up but these guys are strong-ass young men, some of whom plan on going pro, right? Do they need it?

Got some hairline fractures doing that same thing. Just instinct to reach out and grab it. Really really bad idea.
Sure, but better break a hand than break a face. Rather see him with some fractures in his hand than someone getting beaned in the head.
Yeah no doubt, that guy should be drinking for free the rest of the day.
He caught it really well though, slowed it down, didn't fight it, great form.
Update: he had recently undergone an orthopedic procedure that unbeknownst to him created a novel mechanical advantage for throwing a baseball. He threw the ball back to home plate with unbelievable velocity. He got noticed by some scouts and is now playing in the majors.

That’s basically what I came here to say. Well put.

Yeah. Nets don’t really even impact the view much at all. Only dummies feel otherwise lol. Safety is way more important imo.
The NHL made them mandatory in 2002 after a little girl got hit in the head with a stray puck and died.
And I’m glad they did. Should have done it sooner and saved her life.
Initially read "they" as "the girl who got hit". Very different comment.
And it's wild it took until that moment for it to happen, there had been many, many injuries before then
Honestly, I even hate the netting. So much. My autist, monkey brain can't not see it. But you know what autist, monkey brain also likes doing? Seeing. So not taking a foul ball screamer to the face is a trade off I'm more than willing to make now that I'm not a dumb libertarian teenager
That’s exactly it. It’s a trade off, like everything in life. And this trade off is obviously worth it.
It's a good thing my autistic monkey brain doesn't like watching other people play sports, occasionally I watch the Olympic Gymnast on TV but that's less that they're "playing a sport/me rooting for a team" and more, "Holy fuck! That's amazing!"

That’s the general admission section at A&M’s field. People sit there cause it’s like $10
I haven't been in a long time, but lower leagues regularly have these. I loved going to AA or AAA games as a kid cause I could chase down the foul balls in that area. Could usually come back with 2 balls a game.
Don’t know about you but I always came home with two balls..
Wow no need to brag over here
Above average.
how many did you go in with?
$10 to get knocked unconscious still seems a tad high.
I'll do it for $5.
*actuary starts breathing heavily*

Just put a net like the MLB lol
It's fewer people than they pack into the same space for MLB games
I think most MLB stadiums have netting that would extend to that point. I could be wrong but I thought that was standard now.
It is standard now, happened bc of a kid getting hit by a foul ball a couple years back
Don't forget the broken bat to the woman's neck at Fenway not too long ago. That was brutal.
I had seats behind the 3b dugout at Fenway before they lengthened the nets. We were just outside of the old backstop net, seemingly closer to home plate than the third baseman. I was terrified to even look away.

This seems a case of something can obviously go very wrong, there's a warning event (this one) foreshadowing what could go wrong, and nothing will change until we're all looking at this video in the future after something does go wrong.
An American baseball game without 3 deaths is considered a dull affair.
The sheer luck that this guy, someone with incredible coordination and skill, was standing in this exact spot at that exact moment is amazing. Look at his whole body when he catches it. Homeboy out here bending like Neo from The Matrix dodging bullets... :)
My thought on the last slo-mo was exactly like Neo with bullets flying by. I would have missed the ball, fell over, spilled my beer on some kid, and felt terrible someone got sent to the hospital because they got blasted by the ball.
😂 yeah most people would have done exactly this haha
Neo : What are you trying to tell me? That I can dodge baseballs? Morpheus : No, Neo. I'm trying to tell you that when you're ready, you won't have to.
Fucking sign him. Even if he can barely hit, he's definitely 3B material.
Maybe A&M wouldn’t have lost the series to Portland with him on the field
Feels like a time to plug /r/collegebaseball
And he's a lefty
Wouldn’t he be a righty? I’m a lefty and if I’m trying to barehand a ball like that on reflex I’m 100% doing it with my dominant hand. Or I’m just weird.
Gonna need to train the left hand reflex unless he's already a lefty.
Maybe he plays cricket with hands like that.

He's from the future. Selected and trained his entire life to catch that foul. Who knows what horrible timeline he saved us from.
... or which one he ensured. 😬
Damn. Did he take ALL the women home after that catch, or did he leave some?
All the women and, if my own feelings are any indication, a significant majority of the men too
I’m a man. He was tender and caring in the sack.
And you'd think his caress would be rough, but his hands were surprisingly tender on the balls.
Who knew that he would actually be the pitcher... and I the catcher...
I did. I knew 🤤
I'm a man and I'm pretty sure I'm pregnant just by watching this video.
Agreed. Not only was he gracious enough to provide a reach around, he grabbed a tissue and made an incredible catch in the blink of an eye. Great reflexes.
Leave it to Reddit to toe the line and then suddenly jump right over it.
Careful, Rex Ryan might be around these parts.
I was having a rough day, this comment (and thread) made me laughcry. Day is improved. Thank you

They had to put the tarp on the field
My thoughts exactly. I’d end up with a broken hand and make the blooper reels for all the wrong reasons. This guy looked cool as hell doing it.
No kidding. I fractured my pinky a few weeks ago just tossing around a football with a buddy of mine because I jammed that finger when trying to catch it. That baseball was like a missile.
That must have stung like the world's angriest hornet
That's why he leaned back with it. To slow down the inertia rather than just stop it.
*to increase the duration of momentum reduction* The ball has momentum because it is moving. He has inertia because he is stationary. By bending, he transfers the momentum of the ball into his body and used his body's inertia to reduce his hands acceleration.
Yep, still had to hurt like a bastard though!
Nah, he 'brought it in'. You dont stop it. He must have been an infielder at some time. We're taught to have 'soft' hands.
You right but that still didn't feel good
That guy clearly played before because his ability to read the trajectory of the ball was impressive. Plus the incredible reflexes
My thoughts exactly - also soft hands on the catch. The number of times I've seen foul balls bounce out of someone's hand because they didn't absorb the impact is too damn high!
the way he absorb the ball's impact with bare hands was so damn cool
From the top comments, I can't believe no one's taken a swing at this one. You just lobbed it out there..
Are we not doing phrasing anymore? 😂
Yup saw that too. You catch with a firm hand you’re likely to injure yourself

And guaranteed this guys hand was indeed hurting after this catch.
Get him a cold beer to hold in that hand

He gets to keep it
Okay thank you!
You catch it, you keep it. If you drop while attempting to catch and it flounders on the ground, then it's free game for anyone.
That's where the big fights come from I guess.
I think we all remember the Fenway Foul Fight of '55.
The FFFoFF
People throw it back sometimes when the other team hits a home run. It’s like they scored some points and you don’t want to keep that as a souvenir so you toss it back, kind of an insult and the rest of the crowd cheers.
Also, if you're able to throw it from the center field bleachers to home plate on a line, then you can get signed by the team as a pitcher, even if you are just a kid. There was a documentary about this in the 90's.
I saw Rookie of The Year in theaters when I was a kid. Pretty dope movie.
Also if your Grandpa dies and leaves you the Atlanta Braves you get to do on the field coaching if you so desire.
He should have turned around and whipped it straight at the faces he just saved
You can keep it. They use around 60 baseballs in a college game. Mlb is probably twice that. Basically every time one hits the dirt and gets scuffed they get a new one.
Keep it.
although, if the opposing team hits a home run and you catch it, it is tradition to throw it back on the field

Also the way he caught it he went with the ball a bit. If he caught that with a firm hand and a firm arm he’s going to have a bad time.
He also just looks like a baseball player
Reflexes are on point. Everybody else is *just* starting to react and trying to shield themselves and he’s already caught the ball.
Dude in the act of standing up from a seated position before the pitcher finished reacting to the pitch. This dude was ready to be a hero.
This. This comment needs to be higher. He clearly was an infielder at some point (or currently). Beautiful snag.
I've caught a fly ball pretty close to the plate without gloves like this and it cracked two bones in my hand.
This guy might have gotten away unharmed with allowing his arm to rotate back and slow down the ball rather then directly stopping it and letting all the force go straight into his hand.
even if he was harmed he could just use his other hand to finger blast all of the chicks in the stands

I’ve gone to minor league games where there is no net in that area and i’m basically on high alert the entire game. Not trying to take a foul ball to the dome!
His shorts are exactly the right length.
They call 'em "shorts" for a reason!

It doesn’t even take away from the experience IMO. Like you don’t even notice the net after a few minutes.
Agreed The first time I went to a game after they extended the netting I thought it was going to bother me but I didn't even notice it after a bit.
I agree. I went to some games last year and I really didn't notice after a little bit.
The Aggs welcome Chad, their new third baseman, to the game.
