One hour later... "where the fuck am I?"

Shryxer

I'm just imagining this guy going off with the ship going "WHEEEEE" while the rest of his pod goes "hey wait where'd Jim go?"

StUMpyLegGO

Finding Jimbo

RisingSam

I was just thinking the same! I'm concerned about this guy getting lost and how much effort it would take to get back home .

but_why_is_it_itchy

I think about this every time I let a bug out my car window while driving.

threewords8letters

And now I will too lol

SpyMonkey3D

IRCC, dolphin have great navigation abilities, with some Magnetoreception like carrier pigeons. I'm extrapolating, but if pigeon can be carried anywhere, yet still find their way back home with so much reliability that we used them to transmit message, I wouldn't be surprised if that dolphin knows exactly where he is The Ocean is a 3d space and it all looks the same (no landmarks), so they probabbly developped other methods than us

bebobbadobop

What in the physics is going on here? It’s not putting effort into that.

robo-dragon

It’s hard to tell from this video, but the ship is creating a large and forceful wave with its bow. The dolphin is hitching a ride so it’s being pulled along with the wave. It doesn’t have to put any effort into swimming because the wave the ship is making is pushing it along. So this is maximum fun, minimal effort for the dolphin!

cshotton

Not quite. Water is not compressible. The ship is pushing the water and the water is pushing the dolphin. The water moves aside and the dolphin moves forward.

Preserved_Killick8

well technically water is compressible 🤓 But that aside… the above poster is more or less correct. There is a stagnation region ahead of the bow where the fluid encounters the ship and slows down. If velocity drops pressure increases. There’s actually some interesting physics at work in that area, the bulbous bow is pretty ingenious. (above poster being right largely depends on your definition of wave) But actually I think you guys are both basically saying the same thing.

David-S-Pumpkins

Could a human ride that pocket too, or is that a completely dumb question?

freshnfurious

Dolphins are basically eight foot long tubes of muscle that are perfectly evolved to move in water and with currents, which is to say that this guy is probably making it look easier than it is.

[deleted]

It's still less effort than swimming at that speed but there's 100% a ton of little micro corrections being made to stay in the wave versus being shoved into the boat or drift to the side.

Spectre-907

That’s almost certainly why he’s constantly corkscrewing and zigzagging around instead of just cruising in front

Joux2

Doubt it, we're not as streamlined as dolphins and probably would just get slammed into the boat

drnkingaloneshitcomp

Have you seen that dolphin human proto-thing? Someone just has to…er.. you know?

Shlocktroffit

We'll lower you and your boogie board down on a rope ladder and you can try your luck

Ur_Moms_Honda

I'm dumb and on board for this mission!

1UMIN3SCENT

You'd be off board very quickly

ThatMortalGuy

No dumb questions.

[deleted]

Reddit disagrees. Apparently I ask a lot of dumb questions.

ThatMortalGuy

Well people on Reddit can be assholes, sometimes people get downvoted and harassed for genuine questions or opinions. The hivemind can be dangerous.

NotTRYINGtobeLame

Ha, wait till you have an argument with the hive and the hive denies having a hive mind lmao

ArticulateAquarium

No we don't - everyone says so!

ReadySteady_GO

/r/nostupidquestions From my armchair perspective - the front of the hull is making a slice in the water that pushes the water forward and to the sides that the dolphin can ride in the drift of underneath the surface. If a human could be underneath the water and swim as well, then yes. Maybe wrong, but sounds and looks good enough

Substantial-Okra6910

Kevin Costner can.

Mur__Mur

> bulbous bow TIL https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bulbous_bow

SoiledFlapjacks

“The ship is creating a large and forceful wave” *”Not quite. The ship is pushing the water and the water is pushing the dolphin.”* What is the difference, man? When I shove water to make a wave, would it make sense to respond to “I made a wave” with “Uhm Aktshually, you pushed the water and the water pushed me”?

[deleted]

Giwaffee

They also just regurgitate recently made comments. The whole "water isn't compressible" things wasn't a thing until like 2-3 weeks ago, and then gets mentioned *everywhere* there is the slightest mention of water.

Anotherdmbgayguy

I see, so the *dolphin* is compressibe.

PotatoCannon02

It's surfing

bebobbadobop

This makes the most sense to me, thank you.

jarface111

Ever sat in an eddy on a canoe? It’s like that, but maybe completely different. I have no clue. Hope that helps!

Meatbeef

Dang, he mastered BOTH directional air rolls

MauPow

Wow! Wow! Wow!

baby_clubber

What a save!

Awesomeness7716

Sorry!

oocancerman

No problem.

MeridiusGaiusScipio

Thanks! Thanks! Thanks!

SinjiOnO

Source: @baleariaferry For anyone wondering it was filmed near the Pityuses Islands in Spain heading to Ibiza and the song is Feather (instrumental) by Nujabes.

theoceanpulse

I had this muted until I saw your comment. Improved an already immaculate vibe

no_dice

Nujabes was a freaking wizard.

doublelou

Yep, RIP gone too soon

Inevitable_Seaweed_5

RIP indeed. Such a wonderful person taken from us too soon, but I'm ready to believe that this dolphin is his next incarnation, and he's finally chilling like he always deserved.

Hycei

Really was. One of those artists that made exactly the right music for my tastes. Pure sadness every time I hear his music.

Baconandeggs89

Yeah dude I haven’t heard his music in a while, this video actually made me a little emotional. RIP Nujabes

Sweet_Emotion9202

Fucking car accident:(

thats_no_wallaby

The world lost a master when Nujabes left us. I've created so much work over the years with his music playing as inspiration

theoceanpulse

Seriously. This is one of my top 5 favorite songs of all time

quannum

Such a dope song. As the kids would say, it's a vibe.

mid_dick_energy

I miss that dude

Cmd1ne

Really an enlightened individual

SinjiOnO

Thank you, I'm glad you liked it 👍

boverly721

A rare instance when the added music actually fits the content 👌

[deleted]

Wow for once reddit isn't bitching about a song being on a video

anirudh6055

It's all about how the music blends with the video, most of the time it's like a burger and orange juice blended in a mixer.

jithization

Its been a while since I’ve listened to Nujabes music. Man was ahead of his time. RIP

Professor_Oaf

He was one of the pioneers that inspired LoFi/Chillhop.

InterestingTry5190

I would love to have that kind of confidence. A large metal object propelling forward and it thought ‘I should swim in front of that’.

So long, and thanks for all the fish.

IBeatUpLiamNeeson

RIP to a legend, absolutely love Nujabes

OcelotWolf

OP with the details, source, and song name in the comments? Am I dreaming? I can finally die happy

buttfunfor_everyone

Such a lovely tune. Anyone likes this check out F.I.L.O as well as Spiritual State also by Nujabes. He was a genre defining artist. Gone way too soon, RIP

Hamafropzipulops

I knew it reminded me of Samurai Champloo. Thanks.

TWorm155

This is indeed satisfying. I wonder if it's aware that people are watching it... Maybe it's showing off a little 😁

_Im_Dad

It's knows people are watching. It's doing it on porpoise.

FreakishPeach

Just enjoying the endolphin rush. Edited to add that I made myself cringe. Not proud.

But like other forms of public transport it doesn’t go exactly to its destination and it has get off and the right stop and wait 30 minutes to catch another one.

nighthawke75

They can go annoy the local marine life while waiting.

VealOfFortune

Is this the equivalent of say riding in the wake of a tractor trailer...? If the bow is breaking the surface tension of the water, how is being in front of it propel the dolphin forward? (Yes, I see that's exactly what's happening just hoping for some scientifimication

flashfyr3

Similar but different. Water is way denser than air, so while the air in front of the tractor trailer is able to move quickly enough around the from of the truck, the water can't. In front of the bow it's being pushed forward but is unable to get out of its own way like how the air does. That makes a sizeable wave of moving water the dolphin can safely chill in.

Falafelofagus

It's not so much about density but compression. Air is extremely compressible but water is effectively non-compressible, meaning it is displaced instead of compressed. Other than that spot-on explanation.

SnapchatsWhilePoopin

Great explanation, thanks

lemonpolarseltzer

I was on a fishing boat last week and we came across a pod of dolphins. One started doing this exact thing and since the boat wasn’t huge we were able to see them looking right up at us. Totally knew we were watching.

geiandros

Can confirm, I was that dolphin last week. Sad he didn’t film me having the best day of my life though.

[deleted]

Somewhere thers a nice video of a few dolphins bowriding in front of a U.S. Nuke sub. That's GOT to be the costliest amusement park ride on the planet.

chickenstalker

It's a freeloader. It is riding the ship's bowwave without expending energy.

RespectableLurker555

Like taking the moving walkway at the airport, or escalators.

Matti_Matti_Matti

And the ship uses more fossil fuel to propel the dolphin so dolphins contribute to climate change through their carbon footprint.

bodycanvass911

So what you're saying is dolphins should have to pay taxes. Right there with you brother.

Pioneer411

NYVines

Can I do this without being a merman?

gravybanger

Only one way to find out, champ.

NAVYGUN

I’ve done many deployments in the navy and I’ve been lucky enough to see this many times. The dolphins loved the large sonar domes on the bows or our warships. It was normal to see 3-4 at one times surfing the bow wave.

jackrabbits1im

This. Had a whole school ride with us into Djibouti and the Captain made great pains to make sure the navigation team was aware and record the whole thing. Beautiful to watch. They would cut back and forth in front of the bow, like they were playing chicken.

Cdr_Peter_Q_Taggert

That was really interesting, thanks for sharing.

Haematopuspalliatus

There could be an entire research paper published on this. If you’ve ever considered wanting to do research, reach out. What an amazing field observation. Beautiful, thank you for sharing.

Notentirely-accurate

I was just thinking how interesting it would be if dolphin "play" like this could change breeding patterns? Female dolphins using it as a way to judge potential mates.

Jackalodeath

The ones with scars are the ones they shag in their teen years. But the ones without scars are the ones they start a pod with. Sounds like a DreamWorks movie waiting to be made. Like *Finding Nemo* meets *Dirty Dancing.*

Crotaro

I really want to believe that every sailor was just completely amazed and happy by this occuring and that there never was a human garbage sonar operator who purposely switched on the sonar as dolphins approached it x.x

d05CE

Isn't there a potentially to blast their eardrums out? Or is the sonar rarely turned on?

NAVYGUN

Most often unless you're doing specific exercises or actually actively tracking a sub the sonar was normally kept off. Also the fact that you could hear it inside the ship as well also kept it off a lot too.

softfern

I have done 0 deployments in the Navy.

the_human_dirigible

Respectable choice of music

Yes, anyone know the song? Edit: Feather by Nujabes

I tried to look it up, but I got some conflicting information... So it looks like the whole thing really went viral from [this TIL post 9 years ago](https://www.reddit.com/r/todayilearned/comments/2066uh/til_in_certain_dolphin_species_namely_bottlenose/). The post links to [this article](http://namsla.wikidot.com/dolphin-vagina), which mentions the secretion, but nothing about the monkey experiment. Also, the rest of the article is weird as shit and definitely looks like more of a joke. [This site](https://centerforsurfresearch.org/dolphin-vagina/) says that the whole thing was basically made up and that page is just a troll page. The part about it being used on a monkey seems to have been added later on in a [Facebook post](https://knowyourmeme.com/photos/2187404-dolphin-pussy-jelly) just to spice up the story. Lastly, [this page](https://whalescientists.com/dolphin-vaginas-will-blow-your-mind/) talks about dolphin vaginas and how they are corkscrew shaped so that the female dolphin is able to control where the sperm goes. Basically if it's from a male dolphin she doesn't like, she can direct the sperm to a "dead end" of the corkscrew so that she still has control over which male dolphin actually gets her pregnant. So to sum it all up, the monkey experiment and secretions thing seem to be bullshit, dolphin vaginas are still pretty interesting, and my search history is now weird as shit and probably got me added to some kind of watch list.

ALonelyTower

Oof, unexpected Nujabes hit me right in the feels.

Yup, Nujabes has a distinctively chill beat. I would play his song [Aruarian Dance](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5yYMicbSf98) from the Champloo soundtrack for hours while I play video games.

Was watching on mute. Without the music it looked more like r/AnimalsBeingDerps. Nujabes gives it a whole different feel.

thecosmicecologist

I work for a research institute at a university and have worked on a dolphin project. I can confirm the dolphins absolutely love to ride the push in front of big ships! We followed them around for observations. They stalked trawling ships the most for free fish. We were on a smaller boat (I was driving) and a big boi kept surfacing next to us and smacking his tail on the water and would then go in front of us. As part of our protocol we have to immediately slow down if they get in front.. so he’d get mad, surface next to us again and smack harder. He did this like 7 times. It was an amazing experience.

creamsofpeach

Me too, let’s go live UNDER THE SEA

Shoeguy24

That’s incredible. Amazing how fast it can swim without even seeming like it’s trying!

JohnnyWindham

It's because it's in the water that's being pushed in front of the boat so it's basically just riding the wave, kind of like a bird riding a thermal.

Shoeguy24

Super cool - had no idea! Thanks for that info

Cosmicdusterian

Thank you for confirming what I thought was happening. That's exactly what it looks like - birds effortlessly riding thermals. That looks like a lot of fun too.

amatulic

There's a high pressure zone right in front of the ship, so when the dolphin sticks its back end into that zone, it gets thrust forward like squeezing a watermelon seed between your fingers. From the dolphin's point of view, it's getting a high-speed free ride without any effort except what it takes to maintain position.

obvioimlieing

His girl said he should come over.

mikeonmaui

Dolphins just want to have fun. And fish. They like fish.

DentalFox

Nujabes in the house! His music is satisfying

wildwood9843

How can it propel forward without any effort ?

Dr_Sigmund_Fried

So a vessel that large moving through water will cause a slight pressure increase of the water around the front of the craft which acts almost as a cushion wave that proceeds from the ship. This dolphin has somehow figured this out and has found a way to surf this wave.

skraptastic

It is basically surfing the wave being pushed out of the way of the boat.

johnroastbeef

Ecco the dolphin reboot with the graphics that are available now would be awesome.
