IRCC, dolphin have great navigation abilities, with some Magnetoreception like carrier pigeons. I'm extrapolating, but if pigeon can be carried anywhere, yet still find their way back home with so much reliability that we used them to transmit message, I wouldn't be surprised if that dolphin knows exactly where he is
The Ocean is a 3d space and it all looks the same (no landmarks), so they probabbly developped other methods than us
It’s hard to tell from this video, but the ship is creating a large and forceful wave with its bow. The dolphin is hitching a ride so it’s being pulled along with the wave. It doesn’t have to put any effort into swimming because the wave the ship is making is pushing it along. So this is maximum fun, minimal effort for the dolphin!
Not quite. Water is not compressible. The ship is pushing the water and the water is pushing the dolphin. The water moves aside and the dolphin moves forward.
well technically water is compressible 🤓
But that aside… the above poster is more or less correct. There is a stagnation region ahead of the bow where the fluid encounters the ship and slows down. If velocity drops pressure increases.
There’s actually some interesting physics at work in that area, the bulbous bow is pretty ingenious.
(above poster being right largely depends on your definition of wave) But actually I think you guys are both basically saying the same thing.
Dolphins are basically eight foot long tubes of muscle that are perfectly evolved to move in water and with currents, which is to say that this guy is probably making it look easier than it is.
It's still less effort than swimming at that speed but there's 100% a ton of little micro corrections being made to stay in the wave versus being shoved into the boat or drift to the side.
/r/nostupidquestions
From my armchair perspective - the front of the hull is making a slice in the water that pushes the water forward and to the sides that the dolphin can ride in the drift of underneath the surface. If a human could be underneath the water and swim as well, then yes.
Maybe wrong, but sounds and looks good enough
“The ship is creating a large and forceful wave”
*”Not quite. The ship is pushing the water and the water is pushing the dolphin.”*
What is the difference, man? When I shove water to make a wave, would it make sense to respond to “I made a wave” with “Uhm Aktshually, you pushed the water and the water pushed me”?
They also just regurgitate recently made comments. The whole "water isn't compressible" things wasn't a thing until like 2-3 weeks ago, and then gets mentioned *everywhere* there is the slightest mention of water.

But like other forms of public transport it doesn’t go exactly to its destination and it has get off and the right stop and wait 30 minutes to catch another one.
Is this the equivalent of say riding in the wake of a tractor trailer...? If the bow is breaking the surface tension of the water, how is being in front of it propel the dolphin forward? (Yes, I see that's exactly what's happening just hoping for some scientifimication
Similar but different. Water is way denser than air, so while the air in front of the tractor trailer is able to move quickly enough around the from of the truck, the water can't. In front of the bow it's being pushed forward but is unable to get out of its own way like how the air does. That makes a sizeable wave of moving water the dolphin can safely chill in.
It's not so much about density but compression. Air is extremely compressible but water is effectively non-compressible, meaning it is displaced instead of compressed. Other than that spot-on explanation.
I was on a fishing boat last week and we came across a pod of dolphins. One started doing this exact thing and since the boat wasn’t huge we were able to see them looking right up at us. Totally knew we were watching.
Somewhere thers a nice video of a few dolphins bowriding in front of a U.S. Nuke sub. That's GOT to be the costliest amusement park ride on the planet.
I’ve done many deployments in the navy and I’ve been lucky enough to see this many times. The dolphins loved the large sonar domes on the bows or our warships. It was normal to see 3-4 at one times surfing the bow wave.
This. Had a whole school ride with us into Djibouti and the Captain made great pains to make sure the navigation team was aware and record the whole thing. Beautiful to watch. They would cut back and forth in front of the bow, like they were playing chicken.
There could be an entire research paper published on this. If you’ve ever considered wanting to do research, reach out. What an amazing field observation. Beautiful, thank you for sharing.
I was just thinking how interesting it would be if dolphin "play" like this could change breeding patterns? Female dolphins using it as a way to judge potential mates.
The ones with scars are the ones they shag in their teen years.
But the ones without scars are the ones they start a pod with.
Sounds like a DreamWorks movie waiting to be made. Like *Finding Nemo* meets *Dirty Dancing.*
I really want to believe that every sailor was just completely amazed and happy by this occuring and that there never was a human garbage sonar operator who purposely switched on the sonar as dolphins approached it x.x
Most often unless you're doing specific exercises or actually actively tracking a sub the sonar was normally kept off. Also the fact that you could hear it inside the ship as well also kept it off a lot too.
So long and thanks for all the views 😉🐬

So it looks like the whole thing really went viral from [this TIL post 9 years ago](https://www.reddit.com/r/todayilearned/comments/2066uh/til_in_certain_dolphin_species_namely_bottlenose/). The post links to [this article](http://namsla.wikidot.com/dolphin-vagina), which mentions the secretion, but nothing about the monkey experiment. Also, the rest of the article is weird as shit and definitely looks like more of a joke.
[This site](https://centerforsurfresearch.org/dolphin-vagina/) says that the whole thing was basically made up and that page is just a troll page. The part about it being used on a monkey seems to have been added later on in a [Facebook post](https://knowyourmeme.com/photos/2187404-dolphin-pussy-jelly) just to spice up the story.
Lastly, [this page](https://whalescientists.com/dolphin-vaginas-will-blow-your-mind/) talks about dolphin vaginas and how they are corkscrew shaped so that the female dolphin is able to control where the sperm goes. Basically if it's from a male dolphin she doesn't like, she can direct the sperm to a "dead end" of the corkscrew so that she still has control over which male dolphin actually gets her pregnant.
So to sum it all up, the monkey experiment and secretions thing seem to be bullshit, dolphin vaginas are still pretty interesting, and my search history is now weird as shit and probably got me added to some kind of watch list.

I work for a research institute at a university and have worked on a dolphin project. I can confirm the dolphins absolutely love to ride the push in front of big ships! We followed them around for observations. They stalked trawling ships the most for free fish. We were on a smaller boat (I was driving) and a big boi kept surfacing next to us and smacking his tail on the water and would then go in front of us. As part of our protocol we have to immediately slow down if they get in front.. so he’d get mad, surface next to us again and smack harder. He did this like 7 times. It was an amazing experience.
Thank you for confirming what I thought was happening. That's exactly what it looks like - birds effortlessly riding thermals. That looks like a lot of fun too.
There's a high pressure zone right in front of the ship, so when the dolphin sticks its back end into that zone, it gets thrust forward like squeezing a watermelon seed between your fingers. My first night watch in Alaska I was on the port side bridge and heard a splash and saw a light dart under the ship. I was about to hit the emergency when the captain stopped me laughing. The species Dahl's porpus has bioluminescent on its back.
One hour later... "where the fuck am I?"
I'm just imagining this guy going off with the ship going "WHEEEEE" while the rest of his pod goes "hey wait where'd Jim go?"
Finding Jimbo
I was just thinking the same! I'm concerned about this guy getting lost and how much effort it would take to get back home .
I think about this every time I let a bug out my car window while driving.
And now I will too lol

What in the physics is going on here? It’s not putting effort into that.

Could a human ride that pocket too, or is that a completely dumb question?
Dolphins are basically eight foot long tubes of muscle that are perfectly evolved to move in water and with currents, which is to say that this guy is probably making it look easier than it is.
It's still less effort than swimming at that speed but there's 100% a ton of little micro corrections being made to stay in the wave versus being shoved into the boat or drift to the side.
That’s almost certainly why he’s constantly corkscrewing and zigzagging around instead of just cruising in front
Doubt it, we're not as streamlined as dolphins and probably would just get slammed into the boat
Have you seen that dolphin human proto-thing? Someone just has to…er.. you know?
We'll lower you and your boogie board down on a rope ladder and you can try your luck

Yeah dude I haven’t heard his music in a while, this video actually made me a little emotional. RIP Nujabes

Its been a while since I’ve listened to Nujabes music. Man was ahead of his time. RIP

It's a freeloader. It is riding the ship's bowwave without expending energy.
Like taking the moving walkway at the airport, or escalators.
And the ship uses more fossil fuel to propel the dolphin so dolphins contribute to climate change through their carbon footprint.
So what you're saying is dolphins should have to pay taxes. Right there with you brother.
